I'm 77, live in Australia but born in Yorkshire. A couple of things, when retiring from work, don't retire your mind. It's a short step to the looney bin. Keep busy, learn to cook, write stories, read. I've just started wood turning and will finish my first vase this week. Also, don't lower your hygene standards, don't be a slob, change your undies and socks daily. We clean the house from end to end every Monday, never miss, make our bed every day, tidy up before we go to bed, don't leave dirty pots. We've done 18 cruises and my advice to you personally Nick is, think very carefully about100 days. It's a bloody long time on a cruise ship. We went to Hawaii on a 21 day trip and that was quite enough. No matter how big the ship, they can become very claustrophobic very quickly. I didn't retire until I was 68½ because the job was so easy and the money was fantastic, so I just doodled along in my own sweet time until they shut the place !!! I'd look ridiculous with a six pack. We don't smoke, very occasional wine drinkers, don't touch drugs. Cook every day, fresh veg etc, watch the fat. Another thing, if you can, stay away from the tv. We live in a retirement village, great place, we should have done it years ago. However, you would hardly believe the residents that are glued to the telly, morning noon and night. Anyway, rant over. Stay active, stay healthy.

Your “rant” was much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to do it. 100 days! I’ve been watching some videos on here about buying a cabin and living permanently on the ship!! 🤣

Sounds like a good plan and retirement ethnic ,. I was same as you, worked untill 68.5 as covid screwed up any plans that i had, so worked on and i was on £800+ p/week driving a truck, which was easy and i loved my job for 52 years,.i'm loving retirement now but it takes a bit of adjustment to settle in, wild horses wouldnt get me back to work now,.i retired on nov 18 2022 and went to thailand on nov 24 2022 for 7 months,.

I heard a variation on the fisherman story told by a man from Belize. He was talking with a vacationing US lawyer form New York and asking him what his life was like there, and the lawyer said, "I get up early, take the subway to my office, work till late because we have more work than we can handle, I take the subway back home after dark, pick up something to eat from a street vendor, watch a little television to unwind from my stressful day, then go to bed so I am rested enough to do it again in the morning". The Belizean man replied, "That doesn't sound like much of a life, why do you do this to yourself?", to which the lawyer replied, "I do this so I can afford to rent a cottage on the beach in Belize, walk barefoot on the sand, pick up beautiful shells on the beach, fish a little and pick ripe fruit off the trees for desert". The Belizean man replied, "That is my life every single day".

It looks to me that you think that once you retire, you should give up on life. I am 58 and still have lots of plans for the future. And have no accidents.
I broke my left wrist and right shoulder in a cycling incident (I say incident as it was actually an assault, at least on a civil level)
Basically a guy on a motor bike delibrately stopped in front of me at 25 km/h following from a few words we had with each other, I braked without colliding with him and flew over the handlebars.
I used to have a good calesthenics regime going at age 67 and it all halted. Four months later I know I will never fully recover.
But I m back walking and rucking. God is good.

Also to fend off illness ..avoid as many toxic chemicals as possible ..including food and household products ..many meats are injected with them and many fruits and veg sprayed with them, cooking foods also lose their vitamins and goodness. Sweet foods cause harm…the best are raw veg/salad pulses soaked overnight and added cold to salads, with all natural dressings …read ingredients.
Organic extra virgin olive oil, organic balsamic vinegar, organic apple cider vinegar of the mother, mixed with organic herbs and spices, makes a wonderful dressing and the salad delicious 🌈✝️🕊️😇😘🥰😍 it’s a good investment to your overall health x x x

agree with 4 of 5 points .. i take exception with the idea that by 50 career advancement is off the table .. for most folks there is still 12-15 years of productive work ahead .. in my experience in engineering & conservation those years were the culmination of education and experience that resulted in being more effective at my job and doing more complex projects .. and there is the factor of mentoring the younger folks .. so by moving into a supervisory role my promotions after 50 had the most positive impact on my life ..

LOL! 44. Yeah, not nearly the standard experience for most people. You must have joined the military or another Government entity at a young age and put in your 25 years and settled on a pension. For most people life is about never ending hard work, not attaining goals, not being 100% fulfilled, and not having a life dedicated to leisure. Good for you, but different experiences generate different outcomes.

@@melvano4014Well, I’ve run into that exact model you describe before and all I can say is everyone who chose that similar path was much smarter than me! I moved out at 18 and struggled to live, sleeping on couches of friends, etc., and accomplished exactly nothing from age 18-23. Didn’t even have a car until I was 27. I could have joined the military and seen something of the world and gotten some support but there was no way: My hard ass father had been an Officer in the Army and told me “You WILL join the military when you turn 18!” So wild horses couldn’t have made me enlist, LOL! There wasn’t registration or a draft at the time anyway.
Amazingly stupid and short sighted on my part, and underscores the need for a plan early on rather than drifting through life.
In any case, I’m finishing up my career with 10 years also in public health, and wish I had started much sooner as they offer good retirement options if you have enough time in. The private sector software companies I worked at for 3 to 5 year durations for nearly 30 years offered nothing but a salary.
Good on you for being disciplined and making great choices! 👍🙏

Thank you for your opinion on what we should all be focused on at and over 50. I agree with a lot, but bare in mind you had a business you worked hard to build that you were then able to sell to enable you to do what your doing now. Your living a great life for yourself and I’m happy about that. However everyone has different lives and no two people want the same things. Lots of people who haven’t got the option to retire at 50 start a whole new venture and business at 50 (we did). Yes, of course we’d much rather spend all the time doing what makes us happiest, but we’ve honed our business and it’s now the best it’s been and we’re getting towards being able to do what we want most the time, but we’ve still got to keep the machine running sadly as we don’t have the option of retirement. I have always been a fairly successful athlete even winning golf tournaments at 48 & 49. I never rode a motorcycle until I was 49 so I bought the biggest and most powerful & highest performing CRUISER (not a rice rocket) and enjoyed riding that with my old and new friends until I was 54. I used to lead USTA 4.0 tennis teams and even made it to the State championships until I turned 55. I still play USTA but now on a less demanding team. I still race NASTAR and Masters slalom and GS but have cut back to only 2 or 3 races a season. The rest of the time I enjoy recreational skiing in the winter. I used to be a competitive water skier even going to college for that but now I own a pontoon and only ski about 2 or three times a summer. I still walk rather than ride in a cart on the golf course and can still shoot in the 80s but no longer play in the club championships nor even member-guest events. I do still work as my wife is 4 years younger but may decide to step away at the end of the year when I turn 62. Good to see your series of videos so I just #subscribed today

The fisherman story is the same conclusion I came to when walking around the more exclusive parts of london, basically that people had little boxes to live in and differentiated themselves with the vehicle they had outside, no doubt dreaming of retiring to the beach.... Where i grew up the unemployed went and lived at the beach, surfing and smoking a certain cultivated crop. Basically sacrificing your working life for a goal that can really be achieved a different way.

Exactly. I “retired” alone to my remote property in the forested mountains of SE Oz 20 years ago, and have been working on improving the property ever since, mostly on a very low income. Now pushing 59 and debt free, I’m a bit over the constant work and maintenance and am gearing up to rent my house and live in a smaller dwelling on my property, and spend winters in Thailand. I don’t need to live in my nicely renovated house, and it makes more sense to derive a nice passive income from it and free my life up. I don’t want to become a complete hermit …

I’m 55 and plan to retire at 65 - that’s ten more years of working. I do plan for one more promotion as I’ve left saving for my retirement to this late stage so every penny counts from here on in.
I have a small home so don’t need to downsize, and am slowly replacing my furniture with antiques so these can age along with me. Still having holidays abroad as you can’t take your health for granted (nothing amiss so far).

Since I graduated from college in the mid-1980s, I have spent 20 years working lightly and 20 years working hard. Throughout this time, I have gathered various experiences, including earning a 25-year pension (I purchased 5 years of service credit for $100,000). Now, I have to work hard for 3 more years while many others my age are already retired. But they earned their retirement. I have not been working hard continuously for 30 or 40 years, like some.

I think your advice is a useful focus for those like myself at 49. However, I am chasing one last promotion- it not only offers my family more security but also offers more mental stimulation for myself. I am not quite as fortunate as yourself financially ; I hope to retire at 60 (most likely it will be later though)- but I want the last ten years to mean something… if I have to turn up then why not strive? that doesn’t necessarily mean more stress; in my case, most likely there would be more stress not trying - having to manage upwards. I think it’s the same for many of us in a corporate structure.

yes .. there's still 12-15 years of work ahead at 50 .. and be a shame to waste all that experience staying in place .. however later i found age discrimination was a factor in hiring .. my advice is be where you want no later than 55-56 ...

I think most people detach mentally from work as they approach retirement age , gradually wanting less on their plate. Its a healthy way otherwise you,'re going from all out to nothing. Perhaps mentoring someone to take over when you're gone is a way to be useful..

@@direwolf6234Agree 100%. I am confident I have a good shot at another promotion, but I am acutely aware that once past 55 there is a growing assumption one won't be in post long enough to make an impact. This is especially true for jumps into senior management or on to executive positions. Once there of course its a different calculation, increasingly we see people at that level moving around every couple of years and wonder why corporate performance is probably worse than 30 years ago.

If I lived as you suggest I might be signing my own death warrant. Some of us enjoy our work, and enjoy working out. And having seen loved ones unravel from the soft surrender of diminished expectations, I have trouble believing that not working and lifting will make my life better or happier. Expectations for tomorrow, however unrealistic they might be, are what fuel some of us - and if you've chosen to live a fulfilling life in the first place, more of those expectations are a good thing. Or so it seems to me anyway. God willing, I plan to squeeze out every day of life that I can, and I hope to make them all count.

Working those extra years kept me sane during covid and also let me earn 3 years more wages and add 3 years to my people’s pension fund, plus I deferred my state pension until this week, 4.5 years deferral, all in all not a disaster but 70 y/o and it’s all downhill now whatever way that works out,.

My wife and I, in June, did a six-night trip in the Canadian Rockies, two days of which was spent on the sightseeing train RockyMountaineer. We met several couples from the UK who were boarding a seven night Alaska cruise in Vancouver, British Columbia, as part of the package that they bought. All good points. But missing the most important thing which is to focus on developing one’s spiritual life. As a Catholic Christian one understands that ultimately each person is put on this earth for one purpose: to know, love and serve God. That is the way to true happiness versus focusing on selfishness, including the accumulation of material possessions.

All based on health, so I completely disagree with this. Ive seen people in insane condition at 65-70 and they tend to be the most mobile on their 80's.

Not sure why you have to get to 50 to change your life so much “for the better” & discover these truths. I never was into designer clothes, flash cars, fancy holidays etc - I had the £cash to be . Was very career focused but made time for friends, sons, wife. Exercised hard around work. Saved, invested. Only “vice” nice houses (finally downsized but still a big one - why not ?). So my advice to my so sons is “balance” in your life & everything you do. I’ was 60 yesterday - now working p/t - earning as much as I ever did as a consultant - I spend it all ! nil into savings, pensions etc - what fun not having to save, invest etc. Fit, not mentally burned out, running, cycling etc with my retired friends. I will pack work in when I don’t enjoy the mental stimulation - 3days/week helps fill my week. Not everyone should stop work in their 50s - set yourself up so you can choose.

Tbh. All of those subjects can be argued that you don't need to be focusing on any of those at a young age too.
Forexample, I'm a support worker, enjoy my job, don't get paid a tremendous amount, but enough to do well and should hopefully retire nicely, so I don't see a reason to chase a high paying job that ill hate.
Then there's the house, I'm currently saving to buy my first house, and once I have that, I don't see why I would want a bigger house. As long as it has 2-3 bedrooms and a garage, I don't care personally.
Then materialistic items. Well those things have been stupid at every age right off the bat, there's little to no argument to support otherwise for that one
And then exercise. That one is probably the one you'd be better off focusing on more as you get older, if you're like me and don't work out much. But a six pack, that's never really relevant at any age either

In my 40s the other parent grew elderly and with Dementia, so spent years housing, caring, shopping and looking after parent as all I have left. Now 45-yrs old, all I have to show for myself is home ownership, a £325k home with a big garden that i struggle to maintain. I am single still. The only way for me to actually have something to show, is to sell up and downsize to dich my £80k mortgage. I am full of OA and chronic fatigue syndrome. As I get older ( 57) I have a great need to draw close to Jesus Christ. Close to my creator in a way I never felt I needed. Now I have real purpose and contentment that nothing and no person has been able to fulfill. The secular empty world keeps trying to pull me back. Its truly spiritual warfare.

I appreciate the insights, but I don’t think you can generalize based solely on your experience. Not everyone started and sold a company and can retire early.
I didn’t pursue my grad degree until I was 52 and finished it at 55, and that’s the only reason I got a better job at 57. I’m 68 now and still working. In my opinion, everyone commenting about retiring in their early 50’s was able to do so because they had a government sector job of some kind, with a pension. On the other hand I worked at a half dozen large companies who seldom offered any retirement packages at all, and two managed 401k’s were decimated in market collapses.
And after 50 years as an adult not having them, I WOULD like to have at least one nice watch and something other than an older used car before I die.
After retiring I’ll have time to indulge my hobby and work around the house, but have no friends, no close family, and certainly “travel” won’t be happening as I’ll need every penny of what will be a much reduced income. Not everyone is in the same situation.

There's something wrong with your drone...it didn't have many tourists in the photos? York is normally packed out - can't walk along the streets without tripping over folk?

Disagree on fashion..by all means avoid designer labels due to excess cost but develop a sense of style if you dont have one. Research and buy good quality designs which dont go out of fashion , being able to choose an outfit for any situation is good fun. Keep aware of accesories and research the colour wheel. Do it for yourself and have fun, you will be amazed how strangers will compliment you because you stand out from the bland crowd. There are lots of u tube vids for free with advice. Be bold, the history of fashion is a great story., become part of the story.
