In 2012, I got laid off from my corporate executive job after 15 years at age 51. I spent years trying to get work and finally decided to go back to college and retrain in a different field. I graduated from Le Cordon Bleu and worked as a chef/baker until the pandemic in 2020 when my café closed. I needed money to pay bills, so I started reselling. 4 years later, I’m 63 with a thriving business that I love. I have the flexibility to work when I want and pursue other interests. This year, I’m taking my business international, traveling to Europe and Asia to thrift vintage items I can resell in the US. I also want to take classes in mosaic art and jewelry making. The best part is that all of my travel expenses are tax-deductible!

Im 60 and just divorced 2 months ago from a 38 year marriage. Had been unemployed at the time I filed and was really struggling with depression. Found a great lawyer that believed in me. Found a job with a company I love. Had to go to France for two weeks for training. Was so proud of myself that I drove in a country that I dont spesk the language. Even went to Paris on my own at the end of my training. Found a great apartment close to my family and enjoying being a first time grandma on the weekend. Next goal is to lose weight before my youngest sons wedding next year and to get healthier and stronger by working out at the gym at my apartment club house. Also decided to try golf again after not playing since college. Would also like to take a hip hop class because I love dancing too! Stay strong, you got this!

I'm in tears as I write this! at 54 my husband decided after a decade of marriage he didnt want to be married anymore. Thankfully, I had money saved so I stayed in our home we shared together for a few months and thanks to God I brought a house. Fast forward to today and getting ready to turn 55, Ive struggled with feeling lonley at times, overwhelmed with my current responsibilities and lacking self care. Often times I'm feeling as if I want to cry thinking of "what NOW. "As recent as this morning as I began to prepare for work, (thankfully I'm working from home) i came across your video. I usually have youtube in the background with something positive in the background, its my way of being intentional of what I allow in space/head. I was thinking it would be nice to see videos with people my age and share in a community with a safe space real life feelings. Your video is what I needed! I'm not starting over professionally, I love what i do, but I need to reset and begin life without a partner....meaning start living outside of work. You made me consider finding hobbies and getting out of the house to take time for me!!! Please keep the videos coming they are inspiring! By the way you are beautiful and not OLD!! Thank you🥰😇😇😇

Is it in the water? My husband decided we had too many children and no longer wanted to be married, and left us for Linda. But that was many "Lindas" ago. But here is what I do know - sometimes when spouses choose to leave, it could be God's protection for us. It's painful, but often it can protect our hearts and minds so hang in there. It's just a new season for you. Your point about finding hobbies and getting out of the house is great. I would no trade the almost 37 years I spent raising my kids, but It's a new season for me as well. Perhaps for the both of us, since we work at home, getting out may take a bit of an effort. Something scheduled like a class, or a lesson can be a good start because that requires deliberate attendance. And then from there it will become second nature to get out organically and socialize. I'm preaching to myself hahaha. good luck!

I changed my life at 45 after the stress of my work, a divorce and a new mortgage caused my immune system to enable pneumonia into me. I had an NDE then a breakdown. I was a wreck. So when a distant piece of rural land came up for sale, I sold up and quit my former life. Now at 67, I'm living in a beautiful woodland that I planted those years ago. I'm offgrid, self sufficient in heating fuel and natural building materials, own springwater, a wild swimming pond, and a good, simple, artistic life. The icing on the cake is that a friend's daughter is a professional film maker with big contacts, and wants to put my land on a lucrative film location list. W

At the age of 71, I decided to get down to my high school weight, with a BMI of 20. I did this in 6 months, losing 30 pounds. The one biggest change was simply not eating 12 hours per day... that is, just don't eat anything between 6 pm and 6 am, for example. Walking 20 to 45 minutes after a light supper also helped, and not allowing any binge foods in the house or car. But I changed just one thing each month. For that one month, the new change became a habit. The key is consistency.

I have no family to speak of, so it's just me. And everything is on the table- career, location, etc....I'm on a pathless path. And I feel really good about it. I got divorced about 20 yrs ago when I came to the US for about 5 yrs. I was sponsored by my ex-husband and got cheated. stepping out of a painful marriage with no money, no job, no home, no family, no friends, even no language (I couldn’t speak English as I can now)….. just my 2 yr old son and I. I used to think about going back to my country where I have my family and friends there, but my son was born here so I decided to stay and fight. We’ve survived. I’m almost 52 now, I got laid off twice during these 20 yrs. I have to stand strong because of my son, and he’s going to medical school soon. I believe if this door closed, there will be another ones open for us. All I can say is don’t look
back, keep moving forward. past is a lesson for us to learn to improve for our better future. I am very happy with my single life till today. I hope all the best for you and strength to stand up 😊

I just accepted a new job today. I’m 63, and was hired after 15 minutes. I have my own business as a busy hairstylist, and have not even told my clients that I’m leaving.
I’ve always loved the idea of working in a memory care facility, and a job came up( online).
I didn’t fill out the application. I called the place, and made an appointment to meet the director. I’ve spent many years in facilities like this , because mom has been in rehab facilities 18 times( not with a memory issue). I’ve spent years catering to mom, who lives next door, and although I work, I’ve put my needs on the back burner.
Everyone depends on me, but I couldn’t resist checking out a position with potential to move forward. I’m eligible for a raise too, and education that this company will pay for. I’m an artist too, have a passion and compassion for my elders with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and have always had a soft spot for others whenever mom has been in facilities.
Right away, the director started introducing me to families, and loved my interaction.
She told me that within 15 minutes, that she knew.
She especially liked how seasoned I was, and explained that it was an advantage because of my experience in care facilities.
The place is absolutely beautiful, and she says that the staff that she works on hiring must work like a great band together.
      I love that.
My mom was a little upset with me, because she’s had me at her beck and call for 10 years. She lives next door to me, and has let her health get out of hand because of her weight. I finally realize that it’s my turn now. I’m healthy, even after a hip replacement, work out, could stand to loose a few pounds( Lol), but have been thirsty to figure out a plan for my future.
Hairstylists do not have a 401 K, paid vacation, paid sick days, someone to pay for education, and room for growth. I have amazing clients whom I’ve had for many years, so I need to tell them in the most respectful way.
My mom says that I’m in the honeymoon faze of a new job. I disagree.
Not only that, my clients are getting older and some have passed away. This job will allow $1000 per month extra ( which may not seem like much to some), but when clients cancel, I’m not receiving income.
This company also has health insurance, and dental.
Listening to you makes me feel hopeful, and eager to start something new.
Im taking on a huge risk. I will start work at 8:30-5 fives days per week, and was given my desired days off, which wasn’t even in the cards, because on line, the days off were in the middle of the week.
With that being said, you could say that I’m starting over. The position is an event coordinator. I would be responsible for activities such as art, music, chair exercise etc….. I have one month before I start.
If anyone has any input or ideas, I welcome them.
Thanks for your video. This really helped my busy mind, lying here thinking too much at 4:41 am!!!!!
Best of luck to all whom are starting over❤.

So, they used their small retirement savings to open a small tourist knick-knack shop that provided them with something to do and a liveable income. They ran it for 35 years, until they were both 99, then sold the business because they both felt it was time to take it easy. I met them when I was in my late 30s. Each withdrawal has only made it difficult for my savings to recover through compounding. It feels like etf's and bonds might just now be limiting my returns instead of managing risk.

A few weeks prior to starting school, I came across the phrase "Life is beautiful, but life is what You make it". I penned that saying in large letters on a piece of stiff paper, cleared everything off my desk except my Bible, and placed the paper alongside. The rest is history. So my friend, keep your goals in front of you, work hard and reap the benefits. I work full time nights as a Geriatric RN and I am so glad I went back to school when I did. It has been well worth it! I can almost relate. I'll be 61 in a few weeks. I'm not close to any of my relatives, mentally and/or physically. I went through my second divorce 13 years ago. For the first 3 months of our separation, I never felt so alone. I rented a house and at first couldn't comprehend my situation. I finally snapped out of the depression, I started listening to a podcast and listening to alternative music. This helped me to at least hear something other than my own thoughts because I was working three jobs trying to keep busy, but at all three jobs I was working alone. Once I got past the loneliness, I was able to think more clearly. That made it possible to start going to different meetups where there were other people. At first I thought I needed to date so I tried online dating. I quickly figured out that I really didn't want to date, I was fine by myself. I guess what I am saying, is that you can get past the loneliness, and you will figure out how to still enjoy life. It's hard losing someone you spent a large part of your life with. I hope you find the happiness you deserve.

My grandfather had a career in the military, found that afterward “no one wanted to hire a 50 year old.” He found a job in security for the sherif department. Then decided he wanted to go to law school. He wasn’t able to pass the entrance exam, but met a woman who was starting her law practice and a business. She and her partner gave my grandfather the opportunity to work (which he wanted to do! He hated retirement) for 20 years, doing the things he loved! Law, managing an office, and light construction projects. He never would have had that if he hadn’t at least tried pursuing the law degree.

Someone in their fifties is still considered middle aged. You’re not considered “senoir” until around 62 but that doesn’t even matter. It’s how you define yourself and live your life. There’s a channel with a woman in her 60’s body building and she’s got a lean healthy body like a 30 year old. There’s another who is 70 and looks just as awesome!
You’re defeating yourself by calling yourself old. It’s not what the world says; it’s what you say.

I have realised that one of the true and most powerful purpose in life, is letting go.
It is too easy to cling onto "something", and place the value of ourselves and our life on external stuffs, or chasing after some kind of dreams endlessly.
Letting go, is the powerful one.
Such mental strength is very strong.
When we can finally relax and live in the moment, we are no longer "lacking or longing".
We are finally here and now, living the best life.

Some of thing might lose their value, some of them might even become harmful for us, preventing us from seeing the real values of things around us. Ohhh now I'm inspired. I'm 65 & 4 months. After 30 plus years as a graphic designer, and 12 at the same company, COVID hit, and they let 85 of us go, the 3 in our department? Were 60 and over. Yes, it was a manager wanted us out kind of thing and COVID gave her an excuse. No regrets however. I believe it was God who ordained this, because I was ready to have a breakdown (another graphic designer already did a year earlier at age 26) due to the stress and unrealistic demands. In any event, worked at a printing company for 3 months while a girl was out on maternity leave. And then 4 months at WalMart, which ended up being a nightmare for a LOT of the workers there. I'm finding corporate is just a hornet's nest in most cases! LOL. So now? Bored, so decided to take up getting a CDL (Commercial Driver's License) and drive a truck because I love traveling, and why not get paid while doing so?? I have all my ducks in a row, ready to almost take the test for the permit part. Yet, am ... or now "was" really hesitant! Though it's an industry that welcomes older as well as younger drivers, am self-doubting myself out of it. This is only the 2nd time I've had to reinvent my life, and even though know I can? I'm just hesitant!! But God brought me here to see this story, and now reading the comments, realize I'm not so alone in needing and wanting to start over, which includes selling my house once established in a job. If I retire? For real? I will just sit and get sick, and wait for God to take me home. That's not what I want to do. I have no family, estranged due to a long story I won't share here. However, God has led me thus far, and He just needs me to take those 2 steps further. Stories here have given me courage. Thank you for that!! ALL of you!!

I just turned 55, was laid off last year, a company I’ve put so much time and hardwork for 10 years. Laid off because in their eyes I’m old, which I did 3 roles for the company. Nonetheless God had other plans. I work for a global company now for almost a year and feeling a bit better. It was hard starting over and had to study again and learn something brand new. I was always afraid of what I can and cannot retain. Fears of the unknown. That thought process wore me out more than the task itself. I vowed going forward that I won’t let fear stop me anymore. Thank you for inspiring me and giving all of us a voice. I am currently helping my elderly parents out (Dad 91 and Mom 86) with my siblings. I still have kids at home (1 moved back in after graduation and another to go to college in the fall). Emotionally all this is draining but I have to speak positive over my life and those that I hold dear. I’ll be joining a gym thanks for inspiring and will probably enroll in a dance class because I love dancing too. God bless you in your journey. Sounds like God has even bigger plans for you. 😊

I still weigh my pros and cons but ultimately you have to take a leap of faith that God will never stray you wrong. Every thing good that happened in my life has happened because I took a chance. I had talked myself out of many things and all I got was regrets. I took a leap when I decided at 50 to take my masters and graduated with honors. Took another leap with this current job requiring to pass licensing. While of course trying to silence the doubts. I think it’s best to know what makes you happy and just follow it. We go through season in life, just like nature does. Each season is a new start. You are absolutely right. If you love what you do, don't quit. I was a high school visual art teacher. I laid myself off. I took early retirement. I wasn't handling my jobs very well or myself. I wasn't eating well, or sleeping well and I was just not taking good care of myself. My first year of early retirement I focused on getting better. Lots of meditating... oh, I am sorry I do ramble on. I should make my own video. I started reselling too after a year of being home. I really needed to find something to make a living. I too have always loved thrifting! I'm taking a big leap this month, I'm putting my house on the market to downsize from 1600 square feet to 870 square feet. I'll let you know when I make that vlog! How courageous you are! You are such an inspiration and I hope you realize that. You are not old. You are aging. We are all aging. There has been such an emphasis on ageism in our culture. Well, I guess in most cultures. But people are living longer, people are living better and people are aging better than ever before. I'm 51. I was adopted, lived through foster care until age 7, lived with abusive adoptive parents and survived pretty much raising myself, becoming a mother at 17 and then again to twins with multiple disabilities at age 24. I was married, in an abusive relationship and divorced and a single mother to three beautiful children and like you have started over several times. Now I'm single, my children are grown and doing okay. I've begun a career in reselling also. I'm aging. We have so much to look forward to! You dance wonderfully! You are such a bright light in this world Dana. We all thrive differently. We all come from different circumstances. We all need to honor ourselves and who God has created us to be. Some of us never learned to care for ourselves or nurture ourselves. Now that my children are grown, I am trying to nurture myself more. I gave myself a face massage the other day just because I needed to be touched lol. It was so good! Love yourself and keep rocking life sweet lady! ❤

I left my teaching career and became a flight attendant at age 58. It was really, really difficult (and still is sometimes) but I desperately needed the change. There are challenges, but I’ll never regret it. I moved to live with my daughter and I qualified in a new language (German) at age 61. I travel to Europe 4 times a month and I’m forced to be physically active. I interact with hundreds of strangers from all over the world every weekend, and during the week I live a quiet life at home. Yet… I know the day will come - maybe when I am 70 - when I will have physical limits and will reinvent myself again, hopefully in a meaningful way in my community. I’m 63 now, but already planning ahead.

Thank you for your encouraging words. I can truly relate. I’ve dreamed of starting a business for years, but I've let procrastination hold me back. Now, at over fifty, I find myself wondering where the time has gone. I appreciate you sharing your story. Wishing you all the best!

You’re not old. Stop saying that! You seem like a very pleasant & interesting person with plenty of experience and gifts to sharing with your family, friends and especially your grand baby . Your willingness to try new things and reinvent yourself are keeping you young, relevant, and vibrant. Stay strong and joyful that you have so much to offer.

I’m 60yo and I’m starting my new career. Needless to say your story means so much to me. Like you I keep myself busy everyday by going to the gym, taking classes, playing guitar and watching my diets. I don’t drink or smoke, I terminated my TV cable and detached myself from social media. The only thing I don’t have is a community. And now I found you, I’ll be following your footsteps to continue my journey. Thank you so much for sharing. Best wishes!

Thank you, UA-cam, for suggesting a video that I didn't know I needed. I turned 50 last year. It was bittersweet because while I was excited and thankful for this milestone, I missed having my Mom here to share the moment with me. So many things she said are starting to make sense now and I wished that I could tell her that 😢. Now, I feel like I am starting a new season of life that is somewhat scary but makes me happy.
