Thanks for teaching an old dog a new trick. For the last 40ish years of changing my own oil I've been putting them on as tight as I can get by hand. Normally not a huge issue getting an old one off but with the placement on the Liberty it's always a battle. Unfortunately I only played enough of the video to remind me where the filter was located and didn't watch any further until I was done with everything so next oil change will be a fight too but at least it should be the last one.
I realize this Video is old, BUT My 02's Oil plug is a tight fit 19mm. And being 6'4" Large build , I can fit under My Jeep a bit to get the plug out . Long Arms lol And with large hands I can only get the Filter out through the Bottom using an offset Band wrench with a long 1/2" extension .. And I will NEVER use Fram anything on My Vehicles.... Super informative. I just bought a 2004 keep liberty renegade about 3000 miles ago and wasn’t sure how to access the filter so your video helped a lot. I’m glad you mentioned the chute for the oil filter bc I would have been super worried seeing oil in my driveway. Also liked and subscribed.

Thanks for your video, I have a Jeep Liberty 2002 and did my first ever oil change and felt pretty confident while doing it! Only hard part was having to use a breaker bar to take off the oil drain plug. I used to take my car to Valvoline and it seems they tightened the plug way too much. Also I checked the drain plug gasket and it was in horrible condition so I replaced it. The broken gasket probably explains why I have to keep adding new oil every couple weeks or so. Can't believe they didn't say anything! So glad I can do it myself now to check for these things.

Many places that do oil changes will not check or replace the plug gasket, so they over-torque the drain plug to keep oil from leaking...this is a terrible practice. I did the oil changes on all the vehicles I've owned since 1966 and they've all been super-easy. But, on my 2004 Liberty's first oil-change, my arm and hand would not bend the way they needed to get a good grasp on the oil filter. I then bought several different types of oil-filter wrenches [strap-type, claw-type (like you recommend) and end-cap (used with a socket and an 18-inch extension-bar) but none would reach and unscrew the filter. After many frustrating hours, I gave up and I took my Liberty in to a quickie-lube place. It took 3 grease-monkeys an hour to figure out how to get to the oil-filter and how to unscrew it. Since then, I've (regrettably) had all of the oil-changes done by my auto-repair shop, by the dealer or by a quickie-lube place. ========= Also, you should wait at least five minutes to give the new oil time to drain back into the oil pan before checking the oil level with the dipstick. The Liberty takes "exactly 5 quarts of oil". If you pour in 5 quarts of oil and there are no leaks, there shouldn't be a need to check the oil level.
Yea, the filter on the Liberty is not easy to get to anyway and then when people out them on so tight, they are almost impossible. Glad the guys could finally get it off for you. Smart move, in my opinion! After all that effort, let them get the thing off! haha. Yo shouldn't have to check the oil after a change, but I always do, just to be sure I haven't made a previous mistake. Thanks for watching, Gary!

Good video!!! Subscribed. I just purchased my 2nd jeep liberty. My 1st one was the 2010, and now I have a 2005. The 2005 definetly feels more sturdy and rugged. The 2010 was a lot more smooth on concrete though.
I was wondering about the difference between the two generations. I should probably just see if can drive one once but I'd be interested to hear more about how the KJ feels more sturdy that the KK. I've heard others express their preference for the older model from a 4 wheeling aspect but not good descriptions of the difference.
Did you use that 10w40 oil that was shown, instead of the specified 5w30 ? I realized I had seen your video on removing the radiator. Keep them coming; I am subscribed now. 2002 Liberty here.

Thank you for watching, Bob! While that won't hurt anything, that is actually a myth. There is always enough oil in the galleys and on bearing surfaces in the engine to prevent oil starvation. That's how oil is formulated. Plus, most people that do this, do it incorrectly anyway and pour it in the center hole of the filter thus causing unfiltered oil to be distributed throughout the engine. So, if done properly, it certainly won't hurt anything, it isn't necessary.
Thanks for watching, Todd! It's the craziest thing I've seen....we've had a few Jeeps, but this Liberty of my daughter's has the toughest oil cap. I've tried cleaning the threads, etc, but still gotta use channel locks to get that cap off. makes no sense why they'd make it so tight.
Dennis Coffey it’s only a half turn cap too. Twists on easy. Sorry not a fan of jeeps. It’s a friend car I have always owed Toyota’s. 4Runner when you open the hood the oil filter is staring you in the face instead of having to pour oil on your face to remove the liberties filter. Peace.

Hey Lizard King!! It really depends on your driving habits, etc. But....I think the manual recommends every 7500 miles. To me, that's too long of an interval. I've rebuilt engines that were reported to have had oil changes every 5000 miles and they were so sludged up it would make you cringe. Since changing the oil more often will never cause you a problem, I change mine at 3500 miles. If you drive in a harsh environment, you should probably change every 3000 miles. My normal driving isn't severe at all, so even if I get busy and go over my 3500 mile reminder by 500 miles or so, I still don't feel too bad about it and know that I'm taking care of the engine. Sorry for such a long answer, espeically if you were just looking for "every 3500 miles" haha. thanks for watching!

Only a jeep would need pliers to open the oil cap ! So if your a lady needing to simply add oil at a gas station GOOD LUCK !

I change mine every 3,000 miles. Oil and filters are cheaper than engine parts. :)
