Field and fell and defenders are a great boot by Altberg. They have moved on from the skywalk and vibram soles to a new defender sole. Supposably better grip up hill and I'm wet, slippery conditions. Edit: Field and Fell currently use a RHINO sole, which is produced and designed by Altberg.
I have worn mine most days for more than ten years. We have been on some great adventures together. One resole about 5 years ago. One of the boots is now letting in a little water and proofing them doesn't seem to be helping so I have a new pair on the way. My old ones are still serviceable so I will be wearing them to work in as they are a bit more comfortable than the defenders that I usually wear for work.
Yeah I think the range of fits available for alt bergs is one of the major selling points. Nice to know that if you buy a boot based on a specific last it is going to fit!
Your welcome. The clincher for me has been fit. Obviously everyone's feet are different but I have simply never had such a comfy pair of leather boots!
Am with you on that Chris. As another person with slightly wide feet, forefeet primarily, the ability to choose a boot based on a wide last is a big selling point.
Altberg only make their bespoke custom boots in the UK. Circa £15-1800. 0:10 All their Hiking boots are made in Italy from components from other places in the EU!. Also you can buy membrane free boots. Meindl, Hanwag and Lowa make such boots!
Thanks Daniel. This is what the alt-berg site says in it. Seems to be mainly about batch quantities. www.altberg.co.uk/the-altberg-factory/altberg-boots
Still going, Although in fair weather months I use trail shoes so they don't get year round use. See no reason why you can't get years out of them if looked after.
I disagree, Altberg boots worse boots I've ever bought. My walking habits haven't changed and my Mamotts lasted nearly 10 years, Altbergs started leaking and falling apart by the 3rd winter and now they are ready for the bin
Hi Greenman. Fair enough, of course we can only give our own experience and certainly I wouldn't expect that unless was using day in day out. Which model of boots were they?
What model of altberg boots did you have? Where they army issue defender boots mass produced in Italy? Or where they a customer boot bought directly from altberg or one of their stockists?

Thank-you for this review. I need new boots and have narrow heels and a wide fore-foot. The Altbergs were already at the top of my list.
Fantastic review mate you convinced me to get a pair ordered, you cant go wrong with altberg
Thanks. Hope you get as good service out of yours as I have of mine 😁
My duty boots are altberg defenders, and I can be in them for up to 18hrs, they are superb from the box.
Thanks @theautumnalcyclist7629. That was one of the most pleasant suprises for me too. Comfort out of the box!!

Thanks Charles. Nothing better than a first hand testimonial from someone who has worn them extensively. The comfort really stands out for me.
Loving my Altbergs, mostly due to them being extra wide fitting, will be getting them re-soled soon as not wanting boots from another company.

This was so helpful, thank you so much!

The Bergen boots are excellent.
My Altbergs are the best fitting, boots I've ever had, my feet are a bit wide. I'm on my second soles now.

And what size boot fitting did you choose , and what model boots.

Thanks for sharing. How long did this pair last for you?

they also make boot polish 🤭🤣
well technically they get grangers to make it for them. Who knows if it works better or worse than normal grangers but seems to work for me :)
