I have over 200 hrs of self defense/fighting with a handgun to include Clint Smith's Thunder Ranch and KR Training Systems. Also at one time I held a Texas peace officer license and was a reserve deputy sheriff for Dallas County. We usually teamed up with another reserve deputy and did patrol or served warrants. I am a member and range officer at the Wyoming Antelope Club and shoot livefire once a week and dryfire at home most other days. I am familiar and competent with firearms, especially handguns. I am 77 with various health/mobility issues but have reached the same conclusion that a cane with proper training may kept me from having to shoot someone. Due to the legal defense of "disparity of force", I may be justified using deadly force where a younger, healthier person would not be justified. I can't run any more and can't fight with only hand techniques any more even though I've had a reasonable amount of martial arts and boxing training in the past. Additionally I can't afford to be thrown to the ground. As Master Gary pointed out, if I have to shoot, the cane may give me time to draw a pistol. Remember the "21 foot rule" where a bad guy with a knife can cover that distance before most officers can draw and fire their sidearm. But with a good wack or two with the cane I may be able to avoid shooting. BTW I am a "recovering" Texas lawyer, and I would try my best not to hit someone in the head, neck, or spine unless I was justified in using deadly force. Bottom line, if I am not justified in shooting, I am not justified in using deadly force. And of course there are moral issues as well as legal. Just because you can shoot someone and probably be justified, doesn't mean you should. That's a very difficult decision made usually in a couple of seconds.
That’s why your Master Hernandez! Great program with life saving and life giving, less lethal strikes to subdue opponent(s). Love watching this channel!!!
Hope your on the mend Master Gary , in the UK it’s reasonable force’ but knife crime also, most things illegal for self defence ‘ I used to tell people to carry a small car paint touch up spray so you can temporarily blind them whilst also marking them! Paint can be removed at hospital and they’re easy to identify’. But not sure these days So I would be more inclined to go for legs and non lethal areas unless no other option Thanks for today’s lesson’.
Good video Gary thanks, I don't have a gun. Always my cane and situational awareness ! Getting rough up here in upstate NY always gotta be looking. My question is how to be a gray man and blend in to the crowd with a cane? Thanks, Bob
Get one of Master G's canes with the sharpened crook! Got mine yeeeaarz ago from his competition. But... the form of how to use them are the same . Aim for joints..., knees , elbows, shoulders, collar bones. Head and... last resort!!
Hi Tony yes Things like a Tactical pen, small tactical flashlight, small dow rod of wood. I'm going to be doing a video soon on other tools to carry in case you drop your cane and you can go right to them. Thank you for watching.
Its always best to start with non lethal to less lethal to last ditch lethal, non to less gives the opportunity to draw attention aka witnesses to say he / she done everything they could before they had to permanently stop the threat.
Many sources suggest 3 levels of defense: firearm, non lethal alternative (like a cane), and basic striking and grappling skills.
Good points. I consider the cane my 1st option self-defense tool.
Thank you

Thank you. I am doing well, John.
Great concept. Gives you that nonlethal option and deterrent fast. And if that doesn't work, then firearm.
Thank you

Hi Gary
Most countries around the world dont carry guns any tips on other EDC type weapons.

Lethal force is not always necessary....
Totally agree
