Re: your downspout - you could do a couple rain barrels with a diverter or an overflow system to capture water off the roof… and also direct the overflow where you want to do the rain garden. House is coming together nicely!!
Shrubs help balance the landscape and gives winter interest. Even a few deciduous + evergreen shrubs makes a huge difference in the winter time. That's a huge natural area, give it some bones.
Annuals flower all season long, so you have something interesting to look at at all times. I mostly have perennials, but I have spots where I tuck in annuals for that reason. It's also nice to be able to have those areas be different year to year.
I'm happy that you found a partner who shares your passions for landscaping, y'all do some great things! "everyone will be surprised what ryan found to plant... GRASS!" 😆😆
Put a cistern in there, as big as you can fit. Get a pump. You’ll never worry about your well during hot summer months even in drought if you need to water grass, or flowers. We did it at the shop and use it constantly during the summer
The downside is having huge tanks to look at, and that's not what most people would want in their well manicured lawn and landscape. Maybe if hidden by some shrubs or something....
@@K-Zone What do you mean by 'not really'? Epic has these tanks in his working garden in a dedicated garden area. Those tanks would look horrible in someone's front yard. Epic has multiple tanks, all very industrial looking, in his garden, and nobody wants that in the front yard. Notice that Ryan doesn't have above ground power lines to the house......because he doesn't want wires and poles in his yard. He probably doesn't want 5,000 gallons worth of tanks above ground wither.
Looking very nice guys, your hard work is really paying off! I sure wish I had a nice Kabota skid steer to use while my building goes up! Take care and don't work to hard.
Love the shouse Ryan and the grass looks phenomenal! I agree that mulch was a good idea on a south facing bed but your correct that it has its own challenges as it can blow away and break down but your property looks amazing already!!
The new front yard looks so good especially considering how recent it is. I hope the ornamentals enjoy the same level of success. Can't wait to see how the rest comes together! 👍🏼👍🏼
Amazing how nice the grass area is. I have not cut my yard in almost 3 weeks here in Chicago. Definitely try to water it properly but it is just not going anywhere. Time to totally switch to the rye grass 😝
Hey Ryan, How about getting a climbing plant (roses/hydrangea) or two to have on each side of a arch way trellis leading from the front door area towards the lawn. I think that’ll make a great front entrance to your yard and house. Just an idea!!
You should definitely start thinking about what trees and shrubs you want to plant, they are the bones of the landscape, and the sooner you can get them maturing the nicer your property will look. I'd recommend some columnar trees like the Dawyck Gold Beech right up against your house, they are on the expensive side, but worth it imo. They will provide dappled shade for your house windows, and will look incredible in about 5-10 years.
Love me some hostas. Essentially indestructible. Won’t spread just get bigger and fill out. Can basically be planted anywhere rain, sun, shade, doesn’t matter. And there are quite a few different styles.
I actually like the idea of bushes and what it does to the ground and removing them if you plan for it and put various size plants at various depths with proper spacing I want to start off low and super flat wet winter clay with small rocks and plant literally piles of plants bushes trees and rocks and good soil and seeds and water it all in then add dry clay and walk all over it and step on grass seed and wet it and water it and wash it so there's pockets of water holes and plants and clay impermeable grass top except where the rocks are for water in and out and as everything grows there's room for water and expansion and take a rock out and finish it with clay and grass seed until everything gets yanked back out to flat ground
I wish my spring seeding looked this good (SE Massachusetts)! We got a decent amount of washout because of an unexpected rainstorm and I threw down more seed to try and fill in the bare spots as much as possible. There are a a variety of weeds also growing. Should I try and tackle them with something like Tenacity during the spring/summer or should I wait until fall when I overseed?
For a drip irrigation system, yes. Grass requires a massive amount of water to stay green and you would need a very large tank. I've looked into it before and very large tanks will set you back a couple hundred thousand dollars. It's better overall to have less grass.
I would have tilled the heck out of that entire garden bed to loosen it all up and let the plant roots expand and take root into the ground easily. Oh well, too late. Should be fine.
Everything was pretty much on grade where we wanted it and in my experience with lawn stuff, tilling creates a lot of uneven ground in the long term and more weed pressure. So we decided to leave it as is and the nice thing about our soil is with proper water, it goes back to being soft pretty quickly.
Westies are prone to skin issues and Ernie was in a tough situation for many years of his life before we rescued him. Those skin issues can get bad enough to cause permanent hair loss and that's what he has.

Any chance we you can spoil us with a home tour?? :)
Side note: for spring seeding, you got exceptional results!
Ha ha Kelsey! I was thinking the same thing - "Oh, Ryan likes the ornamental grass. What a surprise!" 🤣 Looks good! 👍
Surprise surprise...Ryan likes ornamental grasses 😂
Landscaping looks great! The color of the mulch makes the stripes in the lawn even more glorious! Haha. Well done to both of you!
Re: your downspout - you could do a couple rain barrels with a diverter or an overflow system to capture water off the roof… and also direct the overflow where you want to do the rain garden. House is coming together nicely!!
I fully support Ernie's decision to supervise! And the landscaping looks great! That grass entryway will really pop.
One day soon that’s gone be a paradise
The idea of grass as the walkway up to the patio will look awesome and tie the front yard to the patio. Great idea!
Do y’all plan on planting any trees? It looks great!
Shrubs help balance the landscape and gives winter interest. Even a few deciduous + evergreen shrubs makes a huge difference in the winter time. That's a huge natural area, give it some bones.
That's a lot of annuals, I prefer perennials as you plant them once and they propagate. A flagstone path will look great!
Agreed

Among many things, those planters are really going to add height and interest!

For collecting rain, if you do wish to do that, just use an above ground system like Kevin does from epic gardening.
The downside is having huge tanks to look at, and that's not what most people would want in their well manicured lawn and landscape. Maybe if hidden by some shrubs or something....
@@ian3580 not really, but yeah, have some shrubs or vines and it'll look even better

The grass and plants are beautiful 😍 it's going to look amazing when you're done with everything ❤
It's looking really good. I learn from trial and error. That's all you can do.
Love it. You could use some mulch dye to accentuate that path area.

Whew!! A lot of work and it looks great!
Blue fescue is my favorite! Looks fantastic 💙
excellent work you two! looks very promising! thanks for sharing.😎
Looks like your dog loves the new property
Put a couple little fishing ponds and connect them like sprinklers and use it for the fountain and put filter and even for sprinkler too
Great start! Looking forward to seeing how this all grows and changes!
Coming soon, Ryan Knorr Elite Ornamental grasses...
Everything looks incredible
That soil looks like it could use some serious amendments (peat moss, composted manure, etc.). Hopefully your plants thrive!

have an auger like that, but it fits on our big fat impact wrench. drills through anything
Looking good! You guys should collaborate with @GardenAnswer !

I said the same thing and he deleted my comment
Looks awesome! I'd take the lawn and wrap it around the back too.

Have you considered adding any hardscape into your design. Perhaps slabs with grass between at entry would be a start.
I see Love and Happiness! Wow!!!
Transformation is amazing! Great stuff like usual Ryan.
Love the channel, get a small wood chipper you’re surrounded by trees….free mulch! :)
Looking great and love those cone flowers!
Nice job! Looks great
Gorgeous. ❤
Gotta get the rest of the “lawn” looking like the actual lawn plot. Looks kinda funny right now 😂
Drought tolerant is a must

Agree, not only provide shade but trees will give a new home a more established look.
Looking great you guys!

Hostas are definitely shade plants. Gold/yellow/light green hostas can handle more sun, but pretty much every hosta will die in Ryan's front yard.
Also the deer eat them faster than you can plant 🤣
We really need plot updates on every video! Lol. Just us and the other hard core lawn gnomes
3:40 does rye count as an ornamental grass?
Not bad…. Love the landscaping
Connor is about to drop off a ton of Dahlias

Hi! How about a small pond to save the rainwater. Might be the cheapest way and it looks nice.
Nice work,
Looks good Knorrs! Grass is a little green though...everything ok with it? 😀

I have seen ornamental grasses 6 foot tall, Kelsey, is Ryan gonna mow them each day, teehee.
If you guys were able to install an underground rainwater storage tank, you could probably supply most of your irrigation from the roof run off.

Nice work Ryan! No drip line for the plants, or don’t they need much water?
Flag stones/pavers in there will look nice! Keep it goin!
Man that soil is rock hard could you use some gypsum/clay breaker to break it up a bit
Nice job on the grass Ryan! Really filling in nicely, are you still cutting it with the timemaster?
Why didn’t you till first? I don’t like mulch as it blows over my yard. However I will put it down and use glue and possibly a net
Everything is on grade so no need to till and have it all settle again
I thought Ryan had a tiller attachment.
Need to baby shampoo that landscaping ground!
How much water are you putting on that new lawn right now?
Keystoneeeeee
Beautiful place you have! I’m looking for your t - shirt ‘I’d rather be mowing’, it’s not in your stores

What is your growing zone?
Grass on grass
Get the round up ready......things are gonna pop up all over the place...
I ditched mulch for rocks, was so sick of it going in my grass when it was windy.
Sorry don't want to be negative but couldn't borrow the neighbors tiller haha.
I wouldn't worry about shrubs now that you own hydraulics

Hahaha Ernie 😂
what the earth is dry
When are you going to plant some trees?
shoot, he has land for a whole orchard
It's not the correct time of year to plant trees for our area. Later fall or early spring for our climate.
@@JEK Yeah, it looks like a beautiful property. It does seem to be very windy and the trees can help with that quite a bit.
