Honestly I think you’re missing the point about mortal kombat. the gore-y finishers are FINISHERS for a reason, it’s satisfying as hell to humiliate a difficult opponent in such an over the top-dramatic and sometimes even cartoony way after you worked hard to beat them.
Yeah, but then it clashes with the more genuine, less campy tone of the newer games. Plus the old finishers were a lot more goofy, whereas the ones in the newer games tend towards being straight up horrifying.
@@anonymouslee8542 I think they still are but there's a weird conflict with the next gen graphics and the humorous execution (pun not intended), there's a weird dissonance, it doesn't feel the same as the old ones
I think Omori is also uses suicide in a very good way, being that it never glorifies it, and it’s always the worst case scenario, showing how awful things are afterwards.
Something I notice is that on occasion audiences will believe that media is a good representation of something simply because it has the thing. Even when that media is a gross misinterpretation. Audience understanding I'd a major part of these media projects and of the audience is given the wrong message, they may take that message on into the world.
the ending was perfect, it broke the tension without being disrespectful. weirdly enough though, hearing about how awful death is, usually makes me *more* suicidal. why? because i think of how horrible it is, that no matter what you do, and you accomplish in life, in the end it will all end in the most final way possible. you will simply cease to be and never think or feel again. and no matter gow far away it is, when it happens, it will happen in the present, and it won't be any different in that sense from what I'm experiencing now. and so i kind of just wnat to get it over with. maybe "break the veil" and finally see if consciousness somehow does survive after death (yes, i am going to therapy, and it is helping, but it is a struggle. i would really appreciate it if the people who see this comment *don't* offer me advice on the subject)
you're so genuinely good at knowing when to be funny and when to be absolutely serious, it reminds me of the jojo rabbit film. really good video btw!!!
I am someone who is a fan of the Mortal Kombat series, and I am also a fan of this channel. So let me start off by saying what I am about to say is in no way meant to be negative or hostile towards you, because this was a very good video. I do have an issue with the Mortal Kombat portion. And it's not on the subject of hyper realism from MK's fatalities, because I do believe there is a discussion to be had about the perceived realism and gore of the current games in comparison to the perceived realism and gore of the initial games. No, my issue is MK being present in comparison to every other example in this list. Every other media example present straps the viewer in (for better or worse) for what they are about to see, regardless of how poorly or well done it is the viewer doesnt get a choice. Mortal Kombat 1 and it's violence (for the most part) is optional. The fatalities and brutalities can only seen if the player(s) chooses to perform them, and even on the comparison of old fatalities, those have been brought back in MK1 with Kameos and the player does get the choice to perform them instead. I think a better example about the discussion of MK1 and it's use or lack of purposeful violence would have been in regard to it's story mode. There (with the exception of 1 or 2 scenes) the violence (imo) does serves a purpose to the characters and the story. When it happens it comes from characters who are meant to be vile or hardened, it happens to add weight, emotion, or understanding to a scene. As i said a very good video, but i think you touched upon the wrong aspect of Mortal Kombat in regard to Taboo involving stories and narrative.
@@IneffableMasquerade Did you not read anything. In terms of gameplay it is optional, so for however gorey you might perceive it to be, it is optional and you don't have to partake in it. And in terms of story it comes from or happens to characters you are not meant to like. The point is mute, if you are making the choice to engage with something you find off putting when the game itself gives you an out.
Someone else said it clashes with the more genuine, campy tone of the game which lines up with what he said in the video about some dude talking about peace and then brutally murdering a dude. You can't be silly and completely genuine at the same time.
@@IneffableMasquerade The insane sh*t the majority of characters do in this game for fatalities most people can't do in real life. The fatalities are implausible and ridiculous at their core to even consider doing. So no... I wouldnt say there is no clash to the game's story. The only difference from the ones of today and the ones of the past is a beef up in graphics which makes it more detailed.
Have no interest in this game but it seems like the tackling of taboo subjects people have been doing over the game consists of justifying incest. Not sure if the game is actually like that, but the people who’ve played it sure are
I think the problem is that the game and its devs don't try hard enough to make it seem like a bad thing at all. They made the characters attractive, they make visually incredible artwork of the characters as if they're some regular cute couple and not two deeply troubled siblings in an awful situation. The game obviously makes them out to be bad people but it seems to glorify their behaviour, like in a bonnie and Clyde sort of way. The cannibalism isn't even audibly questioned much by Andrew and is super glossed over, at least in chapter one as I have yet to go through chapter two. It's painted as very much AndyLeyley Vs the World, not as these two people are really horrible and you should see both of them that way.
@@JustCallMeKart you SHOULD still see them that way, regardless of how "attractive" they are (they're cartoon 2d characters so idek how much someone can really see them as attractive anyways. The game being played from their perspective doesn't mean they are the heroes or in the right. Thats even clearer in chapter 2. People just can't play a game that doesn't put the main character in the wrong anymore, otherwise this whole discussion about the game "justifying" bad and immoral things wouldn't even exist.
Despite the light hearted approach the intro has already signified a clever and underappreciated understanding of such heavy topics and I'm interested to see the discussion in the rest of the video Edit: AND IT'S A HOME RUN
While I did enjoy the whole discussion in the Raddest of the Chaddest way, I must say that the wordplay system impressed me a lot. It gets to the point. Great video!
The only reason why I haven’t superslided is because of the fear of missing out on the endless possibilities that could happen in the future but even with that in mind it’s so hard to hold on when yourself is the one pulling you down.
Very well put together, I was worried for a moment that this was going to be a video glorifying the use of these elements in media, but you did great! Another thing I'd add is, clarity is also very important when it comes to these topics, your audience may not have the experience going into it to understand the nuance, A Man Called Otto is a great example of this!
Jesus fucking Christ this video is so well done, please keep this momentum going because you’re one of the best video essayists I’ve gotten the joy of experiencing in a really long time
One show that I believe does violence, blood, and gore well is genndy tartakovskys primal. The world is so brutal that both of the main characters children died to the same dinosaur in the first episode. But in between these brutal events there are moments of peace to catch your breath to see how the characters are doing. For a show without a single piece of dialogue you feel for these characters
Love how you used humour to respectfully show these topics without being disturbing. Way too many videos try to edit this stuff to make it extra disturbing
Honestly my biggest issue with gore in Mortal Kombat is it either needs to commit to dude-bro shock violence or tone it down. Now the fatalities in mk1 are already a lot less gross than the previews 2 games but its still too much for its tone
There is a very big disparity between the tone that Mortal Kombat establishes with its story mode and its characters, and the way those characters act in fatalities. part of me believes that the fatalities are the way they are because the reaction content gold mine is a very profitable thing. You could have the fatalities lean into the campy nature of the rest of the game, but nobody’s gonna wanna make their squeamish girlfriend react to slapstick for quick views. Sidenote, that sub genre of videos where people make their significant other react to fatalities despite their discomfort has and always will be disgusting to me. That however is beside the point. I kinda just wish that the games would roll back to the early era where the fatalities were quick and whether they were going for a disturbing or more funny nature, the speed which they happen and the fact that they’re over within a second or two made them funny regardless.
@@SirLightsOut99 But that's the thing though. To the people of the past how you view fatalities now, is how they viewed them then even with the arcade style nature. The primary thing that changed were the graphics. The best example of this is how there are old fatalities in MK1 via the Kameos, but for many of them like klassic scorpion and sub zero they look brutal AF because of the graphics. It also can be argued that the majority of the fatalities are in line to the personalities of the characters, just only through the perspective of what they would do if they had to do a fatality. Shang Tsung is a perfect example of this and how he revels in his cruelty in his fatalities.
Yeah it’s tonal whiplash to see Liu kang and Johnny cage just being friends and even having banter with eachother before fighting and then just brutalizing eachother like it’s nothing making me question their mental states
Yeah it’s tonal whiplash to see Liu kang and Johnny cage just being friends and even having banter with eachother before fighting and then just brutalizing eachother like it’s nothing making me question their mental states
@@enzoarayamorales7220 But that's kinda how it's always been since the early days, despite what BIOs were listed or narrative we were given you could still fatality who you wanted despite who you played as.
I think its unfair to let context slide for games like MK1 when most characters never actually do a fatality as depicted to any other character ever and all the deaths are usually pretty anti climactic. Ultimatly yes its what the series is known for an the comic relif of it is the abaolute implausibility of it working or the person surviving like with x rays. Gore has its purpose beyond use as a plot device which it still serves, seeing people like Shang Tsung be incredibly violwnt makes sense and its fun to see their evil glee or watch them be torn apart. Its fan service and silly and un serious but still helps fill out the grit of the world and i think you are too quick to deny that when i doubt you have a real breadth of knowlege about MK lore and shit especially when even describing them as realistic is super stupid when they are not on any level including anatomy
I also feel like he's just blatantly wrong in saying they're trying to be more disgusting and less goofy in MK1, especially when the first Fatality he shows as an example is Johnny Cage's. Which is intentionally goofier and more toned down, even when compared to MK9 or X. Of course, there are some that are just straight up grotesque like the Thanksgiving Fatality, but most of them in this game are actually a step less violent when compared to MK11. He also notes that they are "pushing to make them more realistic" but that seems like more of a product of graphics getting better than anything else. Again, MK11 would have been a much better example for "overly realistic and grotesque rather than goofy and creative" so I feel like he just used MK1 as an example because he felt like the most recent example would be the best.
What I hate about sexual abuse in media is how its shown countless times as "comedy" in regular media and its never called out. Whenever I call it out Im just told to ignore it and get used to it, but when I say I like stuff like funger with sexual abuse in it, where its not presented in a good light and it has a trigger warning (I caught that you also know about it I heard that OST backing the fire punch section) thats when people call it out and think its gross to have sexual abuse. But I just see it constantly everywhere presented as comedy, im not against anime fanservice for instance but 90% of it isn't consensual which is the problem. I think sexual abuse SHOULD be shown in media more often, in ways that cant sexually gratify but instead show how the victim is affected so people can get it in their minds that its a bad thing. When so much media presents it as comedy.
The final boss of smash bros brawl is also the final boss in the way of social progress Fear of things that would be best handled by just seeing them with eyes of science and making smart and wellhandled depictions in media the only instances of these things ever occuring while also adding content warnings to everything in which it is appropriate. Pro tip: BE NOT AFRAID. That's the only non-outdated piece of advice in the bible, 99% of the rest have always been wrong and outdated. I use reddit sometimes and I have no idea why it would be a bad idea, because I've only seen some funny, sincerely insane in a way that makes taking them seriously impossible or occasionally even wholesome content or even helpful advice about topics I'm interested in.
Im not one for poems, but during the scene in BoJack, where they read "The View from Halfway Down" i got chills, its such a powerful poem, and nothings ever gotten to me like that since.

I feel like not only somersault but sex in general is very poorly used in media, nowadays. Most of the time, it's supposed to be sexually gratifying but just comes off as awkward and uncomfortable to watch, even if everyone involved in the scene consents. Most of the sex scenes I've seen in movies and TV shows so far are just shown for their own sake, without actual meaning or purpose and just end up occupying runtime that was could have been used to advance the plot
Man i love Monosodium Glutamate, cant live without it, every day, every night, me and my family always use it in our daily live. Some said it's "not good for you" or it's "gonna kill you" but they're just haters, Monosodium Glutamate is the best thing humanity have ever created.
Just saw Short of Omni-Man receiving the Thanksgiving Fatality Someone said ot was the worst watching experience he had First reply? "IT'S MK, BRO" Someone theorized the victim FLUIDS turned to gravy *AND I WILL EMBRACE IT*
This is a great video. I especially enjoyed the section of mortal kombat, and the entire time I was just thinking about half-life during that section too. Probably the only fps game that, in my opinion, actively punishes players for senseless killing. Not only is it ammo that could’ve been used for a legitimate threat, but scientists can give you health, and security guards have infinite ammo to use. Hell, the two first things that you learn in unforeseen consequences, one of the earliest chapters of the game, is that the scientists are genuinely helpful, and that if combat can be avoided, it should be.
I never saw the goblin slayer's negative parts of showing somersault, I really just saw the those dirty griggers doing something bad, and now that I think about it, wtf?
I never understand why people write and draw about that shit in such a disrespectful manner, especially in manga, if I had a nickel for everytime I've stopped reading manga because of disrespectful topics I'd have 75 cents or so.
I think the part on suicide is great but I think not many media capture the feeling that as much as there are the chances of good experiences in life that will never happen if you die the fear of the negative experiences can sometimes out weigh the positives at least to me and I know many people will say that without the downs in life the ups will feel empty but the inevebility of the downs in life can sour the feeling of wanting to feel the ups. Anyways great video :)))

I think Omori is also uses suicide in a very good way, being that it never glorifies it, and it’s always the worst case scenario, showing how awful things are afterwards.

was confused on how it was related and remembered the bad ending.
Something I notice is that on occasion audiences will believe that media is a good representation of something simply because it has the thing. Even when that media is a gross misinterpretation. Audience understanding I'd a major part of these media projects and of the audience is given the wrong message, they may take that message on into the world.
the ending was perfect, it broke the tension without being disrespectful.
weirdly enough though, hearing about how awful death is, usually makes me *more* suicidal. why? because i think of how horrible it is, that no matter what you do, and you accomplish in life, in the end it will all end in the most final way possible. you will simply cease to be and never think or feel again. and no matter gow far away it is, when it happens, it will happen in the present, and it won't be any different in that sense from what I'm experiencing now. and so i kind of just wnat to get it over with. maybe "break the veil" and finally see if consciousness somehow does survive after death
(yes, i am going to therapy, and it is helping, but it is a struggle. i would really appreciate it if the people who see this comment *don't* offer me advice on the subject)
One piece of media I wished you mentioned here was Lisa the Painful. That game was absolutely amazing.
what you said about reaction to brutality is exactly right. if the characters are as horrified as the audience, it adds ao much
Damn if not for your video, i would never have discovered the duality of violence displayed on Invincible, fking masterpiece
you're so genuinely good at knowing when to be funny and when to be absolutely serious, it reminds me of the jojo rabbit film. really good video btw!!!
@@darryljack6612i realized I was wrong immediately after typing that
Someone else said it clashes with the more genuine, campy tone of the game which lines up with what he said in the video about some dude talking about peace and then brutally murdering a dude.
The only difference from the ones of today and the ones of the past is a beef up in graphics which makes it more detailed.
i think its very rad how rad chad used a sample from jerma's rat movie in 0:47
The Coffin of Andy and Leyley is the greatest showcase of people’s blind acceptance of never wanting to tackle taboo subjects.
Have no interest in this game but it seems like the tackling of taboo subjects people have been doing over the game consists of justifying incest. Not sure if the game is actually like that, but the people who’ve played it sure are
@@CCuppy29It doesn't, they are horrible people doing horrible things, even canibalism
@@CCuppy29the game makes them out to be TERRIBLE people, but a loud minority of the fanbase sees it as a good thing :(
I think the problem is that the game and its devs don't try hard enough to make it seem like a bad thing at all.
Man, i didn't think i would enjoy your pivot into video essays so much. Nice work gaming the game.
Despite the light hearted approach the intro has already signified a clever and underappreciated understanding of such heavy topics and I'm interested to see the discussion in the rest of the video
Edit: AND IT'S A HOME RUN
Talking about Taboo subjects while danganronpa music plays in the background is a taboo
That poem really was raw as fuck to be honest, shit really put a tear to my eyes.
6:50 ...OKAY, we'll have peace... *don't hurt us*
XD
Jesus fucking Christ this video is so well done, please keep this momentum going because you’re one of the best video essayists I’ve gotten the joy of experiencing in a really long time
One show that I believe does violence, blood, and gore well is genndy tartakovskys primal. The world is so brutal that both of the main characters children died to the same dinosaur in the first episode. But in between these brutal events there are moments of peace to catch your breath to see how the characters are doing. For a show without a single piece of dialogue you feel for these characters
oof as someone that has been having uh "thoughts" the last section almost made me cry, good job dude
My mom helped me out of suicidal thoughts when I was 10 before it got worse, same here.
Incredible Video essay. Genuinely I need more of this and I need to finish Bojack
Love how you used humour to respectfully show these topics without being disturbing. Way too many videos try to edit this stuff to make it extra disturbing
This is potentially the best video essay on youtube.
I got that feeling too especially because he went off of the trailer instead of the actually story or even the canonical tower endings of characters.
Okay so basically, you are allowed to show something as long as it fits YOUR way of thinking, got it.
What?
When so much media presents it as comedy.
it's pretty much always treated as a joke when it's a man getting assaulted too
The final boss of smash bros brawl is also the final boss in the way of social progress
Fear of things that would be best handled by just seeing them with eyes of science and making smart and wellhandled depictions in media the only instances of these things ever occuring while also adding content warnings to everything in which it is appropriate.
12:01 We ain’t glorifying a DAMN THING. Don’t put that shit on us 😂
I just remembered that South Park movie

16:02: The Halfway View Down From, favorite episode
Im not one for poems, but during the scene in BoJack, where they read "The View from Halfway Down" i got chills, its such a powerful poem, and nothings ever gotten to me like that since.
You deserve more subs bro. 2 videos in and im already a subscriber.
I really like that the first part of this video talking about gore is using fear & hunger osts
Okay so I've watched this video 3 times. On to my 4th. I just wanted to say that I really like your content and I really don't know why I've watched this one singular video so much but I find it really inspiring as far as creating goes. I'm a bit stumped so it's really nice watching stuff like this. Thank u! :))
this dude sounds like he really wants to tell me a riddle just for me to answer wrong so he can correct me
The violence when the sex walks in 😩😩👌
Im so glad Rad Chad the mad lad and quite possibly my dad is back. I was looking at your channel yesterday hoping I hadn’t missed an upload.
I video opening with a refrence to e621 is surly a sign of whats to come
somersaulting isn't only done for sexual gratification, it's also done simply as a means of inflicting on people that the attacker wants to see suffer
of course, this isn't a justification, but i think it's important to recognize *all* of the reasons
The "Most gorey as possible" kill style in mortal combat 1 works best when using the guest characters
0:20 the math isn’t mathing rn man
I feel like not only somersault but sex in general is very poorly used in media, nowadays.
Then you got 90s berserk with Guts and Casca being romantically in love with each other, like a godly mythological embrace.
That is how you do it.
Man i love Monosodium Glutamate, cant live without it, every day, every night, me and my family always use it in our daily live. Some said it's "not good for you" or it's "gonna kill you" but they're just haters, Monosodium Glutamate is the best thing humanity have ever created.
Just saw Short of Omni-Man receiving the Thanksgiving Fatality
Someone said ot was the worst watching experience he had
First reply? "IT'S MK, BRO"
Someone theorized the victim FLUIDS turned to gravy *AND I WILL EMBRACE IT*
This is a great video.
I can't finish watching this video for reasons, but I gotta say you talk about the topics perfectly
This was surprisingly helpful Mr Chad!
Thank you!
you did not end a video that talks extensively about suicide with "you can now play as luigi"
its funny how he started off with much more lighthearted videos and has been becoming more serious ever since, I wonder what he plans to do next.
People can enjoy the use of taboo just for pleasure in fictional media and that's not bad or wrong 👍
I thought safe house in papa new guinea was a euphemism for another thing that was taboo lol
12:22 good 👍
Bro called the game where a fatality is the earth comically exploding too realistic and unfun with it's violence.
Because it isn’t fun
0:39 why do i think that?
Why is my man Rad the Chad posting in the middle of the night about summer-salt!?!??!
10/10 video btw
Midday for me
10:57 wtf anime is that?
I think the part on suicide is great but I think not many media capture the feeling that as much as there are the chances of good experiences in life that will never happen if you die the fear of the negative experiences can sometimes out weigh the positives at least to me and I know many people will say that without the downs in life the ups will feel empty but the inevebility of the downs in life can sour the feeling of wanting to feel the ups. Anyways great video :)))
I was thinking somersaulting was killing ones self ._.
Talk about Taboo, you get da boot
FIREPUNCH!
LET'S GO
I hate how YT shows me videos from my favourite creators 5 days after they're released
9:53 what happened to his eyes in that episode??
The only good sumersault in a movie I remember is irreversivble
its the "best" depiction ive seen. Revenge, Violation and The Nightingale also do very good jobs

Very good dove into taboo topics. Good job father Chad
What the hell did I just experience
What the entire heck?! Not once did he mention Taboo from the hit game Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Nintendo Wii!
I had no idea what e621 was until this video, and part of me wishes I didn't look into to it
Fair enough
