Why haven't I heard this before? This is a major 20th Century cello composition. Yes, it's derivative of Bartok, but it stands on its own. I love Ligeti AND Bartok. The first movement brought me to tears!
Interesting and comparatively accessible work by the composer, renowned and revered for his avant-grade composition. Tonal language like this is common in early works of such composers, and sometimes a style they return to in the autumn of their careers.
Actually several of his works are rather approachable in my opinion, such as his Musica Ricercata (used in Kubrik's Eyes Wide Shut), and his Requiem (in Kubrik's 2001).
The only one who might cry to this piece is the poor cellist playing it. I'm no cellist myself so correct me if I'm wrong but some of these techniques seem really carpal-tunnel inducing.
hey arash! thanks for the video making. You already have quite some clicks, thats great! Would you mind marking my new Ligeti recording in this video or in the description?
Did anybody already notice a resemblance between the theme of this sonata and the singing part in Bowie's Warszawa? I know Bowie took it from a polish choir but the resemblance is quite evident. sula vie dileeejoooo maliooo
I really don't know why i was laughing on glissando part with my friend, the first time when I heard this on some art festival, long time ago. For some reason that was very funny to us. We where children. :) Nice memory. :3
Apart from like the rest of the piece that’s gonna take me years to learn, how do you play that last chord? Do you like play a G on the C string then go back to first position and play the rest of it?
I fear no man But that thing
3:54 It scares me
Iain Sondered it’s honestly like an etude lol
Omg yeah
Very tonal for Ligeti. Quite interesting.
+William Ford It's very early Ligeti.
proves something does it
Eric Ness not really, Xenakis' first few compositions are pretty cute in comparison to the stuff he did as a mature artist.
I think it's modal in some parts of the piece.
G Minor?
0:01 - I. Dialogo
3:53 - II. Capriccio
thank you

Love your final comment. Reminds me of the late contrapuntal songs of ravel
The first Ligetti's composition that doesn't scare me and makes me fucking cry

+MarcusHK1 Ligetti's Requiem is a goddamn masterpiece

@@CosmicTeapot cellist here, can confirm
@@MarcusHK1 The second movement of the Requiem is approachable?!?!
Beautiful performance. Brilliant music. Creates a movie in my head.
THIS IS SO NICE WHAT THE HECK
HOW HAVE I NOT HEARD THIS BEFORE??
You cannot know everything.
Most of it will remain hidden in your life.
@@hannesheinz720 yeah figured that one myself
but that's not stopping me 😉
Fantastic. I've just started learning the piece. Great to watch the score and listen at the same time. Thank you!
Hi!!! I want to learn this piece too! Do you have the score? I can't find it anywhere :(
+chibby93 Hey!
I have notes
Do you still want some?
Thnx but I bought it few months ago :)
+chibby93 ok :)
i really want them doe!!
Ein frühes Werk von Ligeti. Immer wieder schön anzuhören.
So beautiful!
Amazing
Fantastic. Thanks for this recording.
The G major triad at the end took my breath away…
Unexpected beautiful piece by Ligeti, unusual for Ligeti, but i enjoyed the piece, gonna try playing it!
hey arash!

+mathias johansen Excellent performance.
Interpretazione meravigliosa !

First time I've heard this, but it won't be the last :)
Fantastic
Nice gamelan-like modes there in the Capriccio
Espectacular!!!
I have a slight preference for another version also by Mathias Johansen, recorded live in Lübeck a few years earlier I believe.
0:00 1. Dialogo
3:53 2. Capriccio
Those constant clef changes would freak me out!
They are in fact one of the less freaky things about this piece
That's the life of a cellist.
the first bar made me laugh. literally.
why?
@@yagiz885 more than likely because timbre of the pizz and gliss together makes a funny sound to most peoples , because it’s out of the ordinary
@@nathanrock9269 I dont know im how out of ordinary means funny at all. It just came bittersweet to me.
@@yagiz885 idk , it’s just an assumption lol, some people just find it funny or Surprising. Humans are weird lol

Bonito.
Great !
uffffff emocionante
This is now my eighth grade solo
Love it
insiring !!!!!!
looks like Invincible from world of warcraft. Awesome.
Well... I guess it's Wow that looks like this
Qué locura
bella di ispirazione russo-barocca se si può dir così!
2nd mov: 3:53
This is for me: 4:42
3:50
Where can you get the sheet music?
Apart from like the rest of the piece that’s gonna take me years to learn, how do you play that last chord? Do you like play a G on the C string then go back to first position and play the rest of it?
open g with stopped g on c string, then shift to first position for d and b. just break the chord
The performer doesn't interprete the rests before the glissandi (like at the 3rd and 5th bars). Is that normal to you?
Music Mania I noticed that too, good ear!
Oh good lord. It's music, not Legos. Human, not machine.
Ethereal!
very based
It's idiomatic. Good for the player. Boring for the listener. It happens a lot. Great performance. Thanks for posting with score!👏🏻👏🏻
How the hell is that boring for the listener?
the second movement is like the least boring solo cello repertoire in existence but ok
so players are not 'listeners' as well ??
@@chrisdann1226not really
@@Qazwdx111 They absolutely are. Sometimes they're the only listeners.
The intro's theme remembers me the Lion King's Song by Hans Zimmer ahah
Mattia Lucchesi I heard that too. Good ear
when you don't know how to read the viola and violin clef 😤😢
the middle of the B sign indicates middle Do. that's all you need. :-)
the clef you're saying is alto isn't. it's tenor clef which violas don't play
isis Agreed. They play Do 4th clef, not 3rd like violas do.
Tenor clef isn’t hard to read. It’s basically bass clef but one string up.

last 3 lines mostly out of tune on f natural, f sharp, and g sharp
Quinton Braswell what’s your point? Why not enjoy the overall presentation of this which was very in tune.
It is an old piece...
Não tinha o que fazer? Sem noção, sensação vazia, perda de tempo.
