Definitely picking up that Frank Johnson collection. I really enjoyed that section of this video; perhaps we could put a reoccurring segment together on the impressions and impacts on specific works
Original comic books did not start in the 1930s but in the mid-19th century. Comics appeared in magazines shortly after. Even newspaper comics that started in the 1890s were collected as soon as the 1900s. So that's a big mistake from the curators.
The early collections were of previously published cartoon strips. I believe the editors of the Frank Johnson book are suggesting his work "could" have been groundbreaking in the sense he was telling a continuous story over time in his notebook. It was never a published book, and it wasn't groundbreaking. No one knew about his material all that time. They even acknowledge that at certain points Frank Johnson was likely influenced by things happening in newspaper cartoon strips or certain artistic styles.
Hypericum by Manuele fior is pretty tempting to read, but I'll pass. I'm keeping it professional as a comic book nerd but I'll read any Comic, manga, or graphic novel.

The Berlin wall came down in 1989. So this would set hypericum somewhere in the 80ies I guess...
I was thinking more of the timing with pagers and then 9/11.
