How to Tame an "Aggressive" Snake

- Snakes will bite for 2 reasons: They think you're a predator, or they think you're prey. In this video I explain some techniques to tame a not-so-friendly snake, including the introduction to the "Confident Grab" technique that works every time!

I was in awe of how she just took the bite without flinching but then I realized I let my cat bite and scratch me all the time.
Yeah when my cat was a baby, she would bite and scratch all the time because she hadn't learned how to not hurt people:) I'm sure that that was worse than snake bites- I still have scars! She doesn't bite or scratch anymore:)
Never thought about it that way! I guess half of the reaction probably comes from the shock, not the actual pain, considering how often my cat has drawn blood and I haven't even batted an eye lol. (He's not aggressive -- he just likes to play, and if we haven't clipped his claw recently he may accidentally scratch.)
Lmao yeah

Cat bites/scratches hurt more than snake bites lol. My cat kneading me hurts more than when I was training my snake and it bit me :p Very tiny pinpricks, so way more blood than actual pain, whereas cat teeth and claws are bigger

I think it’s probably a psychological thing. When you’re like her and realize that the snake isn’t a threat, you realize it’s not that bad.
Not that it would be a good idea but I wonder what each pet’s bites feel like on a scale. Ik it would vary because some animals bite defensive and some bite for food reasons.
Its mostly just startling. The bite itself isn't that bad but if a snake just suddenly strikes and bites its obviously gonna be a bit surprising
She took that snake bite with less reaction than a dang mosquito

The very angry garter snake that live in my front yard: are you challenging me?
Those little garters can have an attitude lol I’ve had many of them chomp me
I kept a garter snake for a bit (my little brother wanted to, so we kept her for about 3 days then let her be free) and i can agree lmao. Constantly being feisty and trying to attack hehe. Though she would attack anything but her food
Wild caught garters tend to have an attitude, but can be tamed relatively easily. If you're keeping one as a pet, it's best to get one that's captive bred and accustomed to being handled.

Jerod Powell exactly what I was thinking
Well... She explains a little bit after about all that
I brought home my first snake a few days ago, and I had watched this video (and many others) ahead of time. I love snakes and I've been bitten by far more dangerous animals in my line of work, but I knew it would probably scare me a bit if I got tagged. Watching you calmly react to getting tagged did wonders for the 'nervous' corner of my brain and completely desensitized me to the idea. Today, I scared my poor snake child by uncovering her in the substrate - I'd left a latch undone on her enclosure overnight and while she's a month-old corn and probably couldn't have pushed it anyways, I live in an apartment and I wanted to be sure she hadn't gotten out. Sure enough, she panicked and tagged me twice. I felt absolutely no fear or unease, just worry that this would be a very negative experience for her. So, I just sat down with her in front of the enclosure and let her calm down in my hands, then put her back once I'd put everything I'd moved back and she seemed calm and curious rather than panicked. I don't think I would have reacted with that level of calm if I hadn't watched this video ahead of time - thank you so much for taking the time to make this video and giving us newbies some confidence and respect for these animals!!

And holy smoly! not even a flinch when that one snake latched on you.
Snek is snake
**Snake bites.**
**Hand bleeds.**
**Talks like no big deal.**
It's not a big deal. I once had a rat snake decide I was food and try to swallow my thumb. I couldn't just yank my thumb out because that would have hurt the snake (by yanking out some of his rear-curving teeth) and caused more pain to me too. So all I could really do was wait for him to figure out he'd made a mistake. When he got to the base of my thumb and realized he'd bitten off more than he could swallow, he let go. I bled a fair amount, but it was more funny than unpleasant. And, yes, it was no big deal.
it’s like cats, all that hurts is the surprise
@@elivdb ya agreed. my cat bites but if you dont jerk away it hurts a lot less. most of the pain comes from yanking away which causes bigger cuts. the actual bite hurts very little in comparison.
So.... its sorta like when my baby brother bites my hand? Lol
Welp. My cat is a bengal which is a hybrid between an Asian leopard and (I think ) a tabby cat. So he has huge claws and teeth. He is also huge and strong and he latches to my leg and doesn’t leg go. But aside from that he is a puppy dawg and I luv him :3

I wanted to let you know that your video is still helping people months later. I got my very first ball python named Snickers last week and he is quite a bit defensive. Hissing and striking at me. I was looking for a way to calm him down when I came across this video so tonight when he came out to explore and was active I confidently reached in and scooped him up (Gently of course) and handled him for the first time. He was kind of holding on tight for a while then he just started exploring it was all I could do to keep up. He did strike at me once when I moved a bit too fast to try to support his front end but didn't even bite. It was good for both of us. A few more training sessions and I will be able to let my daughter and son hold him. Thank You So Much!

Wow great job, that's really nice of you
Loved this video, very educational and definitely such a good statement “Snakes aren’t aggressive, they are being defensive” so true, it just depends on how much the animal is used to be handled by people
I have an overly defensive leopard gecko. His name...Leonard. I've been handling him and taming him like my other geckos, but it's been almost 4 years now, and he's still a butt hole and bites me if I go to pick him up, or if I go to change out his water. But once he's out of the tank, he's fine and he seems to enjoy being put into, what I like to call a "shirt pouch" and get his head rubbed lightly with my thumb.
I've never understood why he's so angry at me when I approach him in the tank. I've washed my hands before handling him, I've let him lick me before I scoop him up, but he still bites. At this point I've just accepted that Leonard is just a grumpy old man at heart lol.

OMGOMGOMG I KNOW RIGHT!!! I WAS ALOS THINKING THAT!
My dad owned a corn snake and every time he tried to hold her or feed her she would strike him. Since he knew I loved animals.. He asked me if I wanted her (Note: He doesnt really give her much attention.) Being the animal lover I am.. I said yes. Since my mom and dad aren't together.. I had to call my mom for her permission to bring her home with me since I was visiting and she agreed (If I did more chores... I said yes.) So after the day was close to being down my mom came to pick me up and I transfered the terrarium with the snake and placed it in the car and on my lap. (Its a pretty small terrarium since she is still pretty small.) While we were driving I would sometimes crack her terrarium open and pet her while she is calm (That way she gets use to my touch.) After her being with me for a year.. She has been a whole lot nicer and I can pick her up without any trouble. Since she is so calm I have let my 9 year old little sis hold her so Frisco (The snake) can get use to her too. Now that I have moved a few hours away I now trust my sister and Frisco to be able to be together and I can trust my sister to hold her and give her effection when I no longer can until I return home. My mom or her boyfriend or my sister's fiance feed her once every other week due to the diet she is on and she eats pinkies due to her size.
This is a story of how I was able to "tame" the snake while my dad couldn't since he was too busy and never had time to bond with Frisco. Frisco is living a healthy and happy life and I hope you guys can agree if you also have a similar situation. Share the snake love! 💖

Your comment is really sweet, Ian :)
I love how the baby bull's strike lasts exactly 3 frames, it's amazing how fast they are.
This is one of the most fascinating videos on this channel. I watched plenty of their videos wondering exactly how you're supposed to know how to avoid pushing their buttons - she is adept even with snakes that are new or even wild. So this was cool to see explained and demonstrated.
I find that I've always loved snakes and would love to have one as a pet. I love how freaking informative you are about all aspects of reptile care! I dont think I have the capacity to take care of a little hiss noodle, but I can live vicariously through these videos. Thank you!!!
I dont have the time or the money to get one so I live for these videos. Makes me want to go to reptile gardens and just.... hang out.
"So sometimes they'll spread out and try to-"
-Sudden hand movement- "SLITHER"
Snake: YEET
"sorry, that movement scared you." -Pets-
“It’s not that big of a deal” YOU KNOW, JUST A CASUAL NOTE, THAT LOOKS LIKE A BIT OF A BIG DEAL
Nah is just a little bite. People that handle animals often even something as simple as dogs get bitten every now and then
It’s not that bad, it just bleeds a lot. It’s so quick and so direct that you often can’t feel it when it’s happening, cat scratches honestly hurt more
This is roughly equivalent to a kitten not knowing to hold the claws back when kneading.
i just refound this video after having watched it like a year ago and noticing that nearly everything in it really stuck with me.... I held my first snake half a year ago at a local reptile zoo (I'm oceans away from yours unfortunately) and less than 2 months ago brought home my own very first snake (a young hognose) and all the "just reach right in and hold them"... I wouldnt have remembered it was this specific video that taught me that but I'm absolutely doing exactly that and within weeks my baby hog basically doesnt even musk, hiss or mock strike at all, even when im being evil and mean and digging her out of the substrate.
She's so sweet even the vets commented on it :)
How to train your dragon, snek edition!

love that she just holds the snake that is hurting her, starts bleeding and still holds her! holy goodness I have a fear of snakes but I still watch you vids😂
I LOVE SNAKES and I've always wanted one
:]
"It's not that bad." She says and displays a wound that looks worse than wounds I've seen people cry rivers over. I love this woman. She's what I would've been had I not been terrified of snakes as a kid. And is part of the reason I made the decision to get a snake. Still getting things together for an enclosure, though. My final step in dealing with my fear. :D I have grown to love snakes so much.
how's it going?
I've been putting off holding my snake for a week now and I remembered this video that I watched when it came out and I've just held my snake for 30 mins for he first time in a week!! The confident grab really does work!! Thank you sooo much 👍👍😃
That's probably good if you just got it cause they do need time to adjust.
@@alexandradavis852 no I've had him for a while but we went away for 2 weeks came back and he was slightly food aggressive! Don't know y tho
@@Rampaging26 I have never owned a snake lol. Just doing all the research I can before getting one. I was told sometimes its better to move them to a separate enclosure to feed them maybe check that out?
How to calm a danger noddle boop the snoot then you get a boop noddle all done
BigBear Spike that’s actually not a good idea! if your snake startles easily, your snake will strike.
@@bittyb0t lol it's a joke this just made my day
Stick ur finger in its face its gonna bite lol
'Moving your hands with the snake' I've always called that 'doing the snake treadmill'.
Thanks for this video! I just got a baby snake a couple weeks ago, and I've been struggling to socialize him. It turns out I still have a lot to learn about snake care, and this channel has helped a lot!
I love how she's just chilling when a snakes biting her.
I have been wondering for a while, how does being bitten by a snake feel like? If she has talked about how it feels and everything in a video please point me in that direction. Or if you have been bitten yourself, please do tell!
Linn Jeanette i think it feels like two needles sinking into your flesh.
The "I get bit" video it has a Green tree python thumbnail
I had a younger rosy boa who bit me several times and it felt like a bad pinch (mainly because he was convinced I was food and would hold on). His head was very small though. Snake's teeth are very needle-like so it would be a pricky kinda feeling.
Id imagine it wouldnt be very painful. Ive been bit by my cat a couple of times and that was pretty painful but my cat was intentionally trying to latch onto me and honestly her claws hurt much more than her teeth to theirs a bit of an acheing feeling but not as much of a sharp pain as one might expect
I used to get bit all the time as a kid when I'd catch wild garter snakes in my backyard. It's not bad. Honestly when they tag you it's more of an impact against your hand and then afterwards you notice oh hey I'm bleeding a little bit. But I'm also super chill about pretty much any kind of animal bite so... Lol.

She: just grab it and thats it...
Me: *ITS NOT THAT EASY ALRIGHT!*
Sure it is, at least for a non-venomous small to medium sized snake that can't do much damage to you. It just takes a little practice. If you are genuinely afraid of them, I'd recommend a box turtle.

I find your respect for snakes so refreshing. Especially when you consider certain other spidery channels. Keep on keeping on guys x.
I once had a one eared dwarf rabbit that was trained in the same way and it's a clear indicator on how differently you should treat different species... Benny's previous owners would* continuously pick him up to attempt to get him used to it but what it actually did was make things more difficult as prey animals dislike being in helpless situations. I learned to leave him be and only pick him up on rare occasions, and because of that he began to trust me picking him up because he learned to associate it with specifically being taken somewhere (which he was fine with because that meant more exploring) or when I'm petting him and just hold him to cuddle him more. In fact I began taking him to the vet in just bag so that when he felt nervous in the car he could jump on my shoulder. Animals are fascinating.
Great vid! Another tip I would add is when handling always approach from below and behind. If you don't give them anything to strike at, they won't strike! All of your snakes are adorable btw. I love your hungry bullsnake lol.
Aurora's Woods Won’t snakes get scared and bite when they feel threatened from behind?
Aurora's Woods depends on the snake. I’ve been bit by a corn and mosquito bites hurt more. Being bitten by something like a carpet python is a different story though.
Had a chicken snake bite me once felt like a bee sting 🐝🐍
I've taken a feeding response bite and wrap to the hand from my 7 ft boa constrictor after doing something dumb (smelled like snake food), and my fingers were sore for a couple weeks, but it still wasn't awful. Just a little tender for a while. Best to avoid it though. :P
@@BigGypsy909 i have a 9 and a half foot diamond python (a type of carpet) i got grabbed when she was around 8 foot (she over struck for her foot) she shot out grabbed my thumb and pulled back ripping it open. Didn't even hurt
This video was so entertaining. I don't own a snake or even thinking about getting a snake but I watched the whole video.
