  • Today we take a brass Akane EM1 on the upper mainline on Howard Zane's layout. I mention what's called a blended double decker layout. This refers to the upper and lower mainlines being blended into the scenery and are not on separate sandwich typed levels. The locomotive was part of John Holt's collection which now lives on running on Howard's layout. Will post the second video on it running the lower line soon so please subscribe so you can be kept up to date with all my post!

Wow - super nice. The whole layout is so realistic. I can't imagine the talent, expertise, time and effort that such a fine layout entails. Very enjoyable video!

Here is a wonderful example of an early brass import. My very first brass purchase was an Akane B&O Q4b 2-8-2 for $33.95 in 1962. I only sold it recently, and I'm sorry I did. Due to almost uncanny ignorance, Akane models bring little on the resale market. Gem took over Akane models in 1962 and improved many, but not with quality (hard to beat excellence) but with then state of the art sand castings in lieu of early turnings and adding things like sprung drivers, brake shoes, and cab details. Also, for WW1 USRA steam modelers, Akane built several classes......4-6-2 (light and heavy, and same with 2-8-2 and 2-10-2's. Note sprung drivers allow for more sloppiness in construction. This model of an EM1 is over 60 years old and most likely, only a can motor was added. 60 years from now and if maintained well will still perform just as well. I have both Challenger and Key versions, and still even without the added details, my money is on this one by Akane.

Would you allow me to use the footage for a realistic sound and visual remake and maybe even music? (my channel is anti-profit. I simply love reviving extinct or great and rare trains.)
