Toby's strategy is awesome here. Therapy is usually dealing with things that a patient cannot face themselves (either they are unaware or suppressing). The patient is unable to safely and confidently approach an issue. Thus the therapist's main goal becomes to form a safe external environment where light can be brought to said issue when the patient becomes almost unconsciously safe/willing to be vulnerable. Initially not with themself (who in the past was thought to be too weak), but with the other person who is seen as supportive and capable. It is that small step where someone is holding someone's hand, that can lead to someone's internal strength and bravery over time. And hopefully the patient will learn the most valuable aspect from that external therapist, that the response to vulberability is less painful and more beneficial when met with support and love. The therapist's hope is that the patient can internalize their supportive approach for themselves over time.
I’ve been a practicing psychologist for 13 years and Toby is actually a good therapist. But he should have known it would never work because of his relationship with Michael. The whole point of therapy is to de-escalate the issues and provide perspective, but above all, you’re there to listen to the patient. Toby knew how Michael felt, but he wanted to prove he could help him. As therapists we would never treat a friend, a coworker, or a family member, it’s unethical and morally erroneous. You’re there to help the patient and you need to have their best interests at heart. In the end it was Toby’s pride that got in the way of Michael’s treatment, and that should never happen.
This is actually such a genius scene, learning more about Michael’s background, seeing the genius of Toby, and the fact that tricks like this are actually used by professionals to get patients to talk.
I've always wondered why Michael hates Toby so much, at 4:02 that smug smile Toby had gave it away I think. Throughout the show Toby was subtly trying to use the moral high ground to be a Dad figure of the office - which for Michael meant his social position as boss was regularly being jeopardised by Toby - and so then Michael would have horrible outburst because he felt insecure in those moments and all his unresolved insecurities about being unloved and unliked would boil over and come out as a violent self protective rejection I guess it's like in real life, where we're all not perfect - but we try our way of doing the right thing - but others don't see it that way
Michael is actually being hilarious during this session, if he said some of these jokes during a conference room meeting I’m pretty sure they would have gotten a lot of laughs.
It is so sweet how excited Toby is when he know his new strategy works. I feel really bad for the guy throughout the whole series (despite the fact that he was made a little creepy at times). And even more, I've never found Michael's intense blind hatred towards Toby remotely funny. I like Michael as a character and how he develops overtime but this particular dynamic betweem him and Toby is super odd, and perhaps one of the worst feature about him.
I feel like when Michael is first opening up and talks about how Jeff "Had a lot of respect for the manager" it truly might have been what sparked him to want to become a manager one day. It's all for Jeff to respect Michael who really hasn't grown up in a lot of ways

Well their job is to document, not interfere. That one guy lost his job because he protected Pam from being assaulted.
@@18bluecat really? What season and episode?
@@blackfyre1351 I don't remember but I'm pretty sure it was the final season. The guy's name was Brian.
@@18bluecat I need it
@@blackfyre1351 Its the worst storyline the show ever did.
Toby used a tactic that you use on small children 🤣🤣🤣
It’s ethically and morally sound to let it be someone else’s problem?.. no wonder they call em shrinks, keep practicing doc.
It would've worked if Tobey was a stranger and didn't have a preconceived notion of him as well as a professional relationship.
"I committed corporate punishment" 😂😂😂 even when you've watched the Office 10 times through you still only notice this stuff in the 11th 😂
lol I only realized it was supposed to be “corporal punishment “ when I read your comment
"Take two of these 🖕🖕 and call me in the morning" such an underrated line lmao
All of you who are laughing right now don’t understand, this was TORTURE!!!
Hi
Hi I’m your twin brother
I wish I was in the office, gosh dang it
@Napoleon • 48 years ago you actually got me confused with that name 😂
@Prison Mike ah yes, can you tell us what prison is really like
Go Toby. This therapy session is the most hilarious discussion I’ve ever seen. I wonder if Toby even enjoyed this therapy session
Kinda feel bad for Toby. He is trying so hard!
That poor guy tries too hard, and it’s not really worth his effort.
I really was, but it was impossible for me to help Micheal.
Toby Flenderson you molested Pam by rubbing your hand on her SMH I’m reporting you to David Wallace
4:32 - „Do you want to play another game 🤓“
One second in and I’m already laughing LMAO
This is actually such a genius scene, learning more about Michael’s background, seeing the genius of Toby, and the fact that tricks like this are actually used by professionals to get patients to talk.
Oh no he's talking about Alf, Michael is too enlightened to walk this Earth
Avery the Cuban-American I see you everywhere.
@@amysylvester7289 So what? Leave him/her be. Internet is open for everyone. Their comment was really funny.
Micheal is too dumb to be breathing.
Eugeniya Leshenko I didn’t mean it to be mean. I was just saying that he/she likes the same UA-camrs that I do.
Toby's smug smile right at the beginning is just too much
Tobys face and look at the camera at 2:01 makes me laugh so hard.
4:10 when he realizes he’s been bamboozled
Man people need to acknowledge Toby's persistence more..
I've always wondered why Michael hates Toby so much, at 4:02 that smug smile Toby had gave it away I think. Throughout the show Toby was subtly trying to use the moral high ground to be a Dad figure of the office - which for Michael meant his social position as boss was regularly being jeopardised by Toby - and so then Michael would have horrible outburst because he felt insecure in those moments and all his unresolved insecurities about being unloved and unliked would boil over and come out as a violent self protective rejection
I guess it's like in real life, where we're all not perfect - but we try our way of doing the right thing - but others don't see it that way
You're overthinking it. He hated toby because HR was always the department that had to shut down michael's antics
I wish toby would just grow a spine and stand up to Michael and ask him why he hates him so much
Michael already told him he hates so much about the things Toby chooses to be.
Think Micheal just has a general distaste low energy people.
Michael is actually being hilarious during this session, if he said some of these jokes during a conference room meeting I’m pretty sure they would have gotten a lot of laughs.
Why nobody is talking about how Toby is peeping at 1:45 😂 even Michael notices it.
1:56 my favorite part
It is so sweet how excited Toby is when he know his new strategy works. I feel really bad for the guy throughout the whole series (despite the fact that he was made a little creepy at times).
And even more, I've never found Michael's intense blind hatred towards Toby remotely funny. I like Michael as a character and how he develops overtime but this particular dynamic betweem him and Toby is super odd, and perhaps one of the worst feature about him.
Michael : Thank you doctor , take two of these 🖕🏾🖕🏾 and call me in the morning
LMAOOOO 🤣😂
I feel so sorry for Toby. That part of the scene is so heartwarming until Michael returns back to his own self

I wish Toby was my therapist.
Last time I was this early Toby was still married
I feel like when Michael is first opening up and talks about how Jeff "Had a lot of respect for the manager" it truly might have been what sparked him to want to become a manager one day. It's all for Jeff to respect Michael who really hasn't grown up in a lot of ways
4:58 Me when I thank my teacher after an online class 😂🤣
I loved that 'Toby can I really tell you anything' for some reason
I dont know how Steve does it, but his emotion are just so real, I tend to forget this isnt an actual Reality TV Show.
“My punishment is… i-is worse than…. Hell!”
“So you can Molest me? I don’t think so”
*Michaels hate for Tony astonishes me*
I also hate tony
It fucking kills me how absurd it sounds.
I mean... at least Michael’s honest 🤷🏻♀️
This was among the few episodes where he was the nicest to toby. It’s all about the little things that shine the most.
