- The popular 1970s sitcom "Rhoda" used a different variation of its theme song for each of the five seasons. Here's seasons 4 and 5 back to back. While many have thought they were the same, seasons 4 and 5 differ considerably, especially after the synth intros.
0:27 I was at the 57th Street station (on the F line, the same station shown) the other day and missed a train, and slapped the door just like she did--I immediately thought of this opening afterwards!

I have been watching and watching shows from the 70s and '80s and to be honest rodas theme music to me is like the best opening of any show ever 2022 it would make for a great opening theme song

The drum sequence that supports the opening synth riff from S4 mixed along with the opening synth riff from S5 would kill it.

@rrr ccc Thank you. That photo was taken in front of a large, red art exhibit in Ibirapuera Park in Sao Paulo. I didn't alter or enhance the photo. The sunlight was crazy cool the time I spent in Brazil.

@@tlw1950 Yup. Still, Ted Knight's passing in 1985 was shocking and his last series was Too Close for Comfort (which still is one of my favorite 80's sit coms becauase of the theme).

I like the music in season 4 better
I always loved Rhoda when she was on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". Valerie Harper & Julie Kavner made that show! Along with Nancy Walker as Ida. I always liked Rhoda by when she answered her buzzer from Carlton, the doorman - "What do you want this time, Carlton?". Sounds like something I would say!!
Kevin Ashwood Julie Kavner is now the voice of Marge Simpson and Lorenzo Music was the voice of Garfield the Cat in the Garfield specials/cartoon series…I hope you will reply to this
The jazzy spin in season 5 reminds me of " Knot's Landing"!

These are probably my favourite Rhoda theme variations. Very funky and disco and definitely of their time. Though of the two, I prefer Season 4's slightly above Season 5's.
I like the music in season 4 better she looks great in the still shots. I always luv Mary and Rhoda both shows were very funny. I also wish Valerie the best.

When they actually put time and effort into opening themes. Prefer S4, but S5 is very indicative in quickly changing music tastes, right in style.
Those opening notes are kinda sinister. Sounds like music from an 80s zombie movie!
Though Season 4 sounds more cheery and preppy, Season 5 seems more jazzier.
Not many remembered Season 5; the show was cancelled mid-season that year.
CBS gave Rhoda the pinkslip as a Christmas present in '78. The Love Boat knocked her off the air.
That was lousy the way CBS cancelled Rhoda mid season. The show brought high ratings at its beginnings and should have been moved back to its Sunday night berth. Good Times was moved to finish out it's sixth and final season with a final episode. Rhoda deserved as much.

Never noticed how much the drums are rocking in the season 4 variant.

In S4's intro, Rhoda is wearing a green shoulder top in those individual shots in the blue bg, while in S5 she's wearing a more conservative white button top. The aforementioned synthesizer at the start of both intros also differed a bit too if you listen very closely. The synthesizer in S4 is in a slightly higher pitch than the S5 into where it's in more of a lower pitch.

Rhoda was never the same after Joe left and seasons 1,2&3 Theme was much better
they really screwed up divorcing joe and rhoda.
@Crashing Comet I don't know who told you that, but that's not what happened.
The writers were running out of stories for Rhoda because her character was always the down-and-out one. Once she was married, Brenda became that and Rhoda turned more into a Mary. They didn't know what to (and if you objectively watch the last few episodes of season 2, you can tell).
I actually think season 3 is hilarious, especially the episodes where Rhoda and Joe are in counseling. They could've made the divorce more of a slow burn and that probably would have sat better with most of the audience, but it's still funny.

I didn't like the earlier photomontage because Valerie looked anorexic she looked much better after they changed the photos! This is the best of all the opening theme music.
I agree that the season 4 images are pretty unflattering to say the least.
Valerie Harper, a beautiful woman, looks like she lost too much weight in season 4.
Why doesn't MeTV, AntennaTV, CoziTV or GetTV rerun this?

The fifth and final season of “Rhoda” starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern Gerard could gradually began to lose viewers and end its first-run episode on Saturday, December 9, 1978 (except unaired episodes) due to saying “yes” to NBC primetime’s “CHiPs” by most American viewers.

Subsequent versions of the original theme just don't do it for me. The plodding, heavy opening just sounds completely out of place to me.
Seasons 4 and 5 were absolute crap. Didn't have the spark like the first 3 seasons.
