X5 Overland's First Expedition - BMW X5 Vehicle Overview
This is awesome!! Maybe we'll do some work on our 2005 3.0i and get it in camping mode.
It a pretty capable vehicle when you beef up the components lol
I got a 2004 3.0i stock and was ripping it off road doing skids and trail work but I stay away from water
This is great, I love the uber high end builds for over landers but this is even better because you you did it yourself. I've just lost my Dad and inherited his old X5 and I would love to turn it into something like this, thanks for putting this content out there.
As long as the engine is sound BMW has some of the best road trip ride qualities of any overlanding rig.
Great vid guys, I also own an X5, as I'm in the UK it's a 3.0 diesel turbo, sport, auoto tiptronic, it's a beast of a car that I'm looking to convert similar to yours, thanks for the ideas and inspiration, I'll be following the rest of your trip and me and my other half will hopefully doing the NC 500 round Scotland later this year too.
Hello, friends! Thank you for creating an expedition vehicle based on the E53. I am from Russia and could not find such cars here, I wanted to make one for myself to travel around the country. Thank you for your inspiration and good luck!
Glad you liked it! Thank you so much for your kind comment
Awesome. I put a 12,000 lb winch from harbor freight on the front of my x5 off roader. Having it makes me a little bolder on the trail. Nice video. You're going to have fun.
Pic please? I added 17 000 LBS to my everyday x5. :D
@Jaanus Miemis a video will have to do. Yours looks fun.
ua-cam.com/video/e3gaz-5ZPPk/v-deo.html
Daaang, that looks nice! A winch would be nice but we would need some bumpers fabbed up first
Love my old BMW E53
Yaaaaaaaaaasssssss! Great video! Love the X5 tour. Can’t wait for more videos! 👏👏👏👏 Glad you ditched the rooftop tent. Your setup makes traveling seem possible for anyone...even if you have a limited budget. Safe travels.
Thank you! The tent was ok but we definitely needed to roof rack space haha.
Nicely done.
I have the exact same year, model, and color and have been camping out of it in the Sierras lately.. Couldn't be happier!
I'd highly recommend you get both front door windows tinted down to nearly the same % as the rest, and using a sun shade for your windshield when you sleep. It's embarrassingly easy to forget that people can look right into the car with BMW factory tints, esp if you're watching a movie or have those fancy xmas lights on at night.
Safe travels!
In our state (Washington), we were told we couldn't go any darker on our front windows. But yes, we would love a bit more privacy. We do have a front window shade so that helps a bit.
For solo sleeping and exploring or expeditions, there is no need to build a bed at all. Simply place a good self-inflating mat (I use a Kampa 10mm Wide Boy) in the back. This provides masses of extra space in the X5 for storage of extra 🏕️ camping gear, fishing gear, camera equipment, water, food etc., but it also has the advantage of far more headroom space above the bed. It also allows you to quickly roll up the bed when not in use. My X5 already has tinted windows (most have). I add a few Car Shades to the rear door windows (made to fit the X5 by a UK company) to be left open for sleeping, yet still provide fresh air and stop mosquitos and bugs flying in at night.
For us, a sleeping platform was a must. We have tried everything to make the back of the X5 comfortable for extended stays and nothing beats a full size bed lol. We still have plenty of space for our camping gear and whatnot under the platform and in our 2 roof top boxes. Of course a sleeping platform isn't at all necessary, but for us it was a worthy endeavor =)
@@X5Overland Yes I think that being solo provides far more room and easier to make the X5 comfortable without building cupboards and double bed etc. As a couple you have other priorities of course and I understand that. As long as you're comfortable and enjoy the journey and exploration, that's all that matters. 🙂
Well said =) Happy Wife, Happy Life lol
Love the vid, great job! Look forward to your journey
Thank you so much! Our first major roadtrip is up and ready to watch =)
Great video! Can’t wait to watch all of your adventures!
So much footage captured...so little time to stop and edit haha
I don't think 1st gen x5 has any blind spots. It's the best designed SUV/SAV I've ever owned.
Great set up for the X5!!
I've spent over a month in my X5 on the road so far and it's been amazing! You guys are going to have a great trip, cant wait to see more!
Thats awesome! So far so good. Currently in Montana near Glacier National Park =)
@@X5Overland I should be heading back out west pretty soon so maybe we'll get to hit some trails together! Have fun out there!
Nice modifications to E53
Awesome build but I'm curious why you picked an X5 instead of some with more room and a more capable 4wd system?
What a great idea, long time I'm planning something like that with my X5, sometimes next year I plan to go from Europe to Russia,in Vladivostok there is a cargo plane which can transport my X5 to Alaska and from there plan is to go to Canada and United States, actually I don't know where I'm going to end up.
Not knowing where you're going to end up is an awesome feeling! We love going day to day and just adventuring...going where the wind takes us =)
Amazing!!
Thank you very much! =)
Great stuff i like the mods and easygoing commentary. I think the x5i s a great platform and I appreciate any free thinkers who will run something other than a Toyota or jeep. My rig is an 01 ml320 and will go anywhere I point it. I think you both would like the Baja xl rally I just did it and had a blast. Next one is 2025 with a reunion run to loreto next year Feb March time frame.
Top Tipp:
No-one cares about any shopping list!
A product needs a relation to a FEATURE. Or better proposition! THIS gets a story.
Otehrwise it is just a accessory catalog.
I'm a recent owner of an 09 X5. I have found my Channel 🙂
Ty
Wish I can do that to my 04 X5
It would be awesome
Just passed this dude on the road and looked him up. Interesting.
Haha, we are back on the road but not 100% just yet. Still need suspension work...as always
Opening that moon roof must be nice because of how big it is
We actually just got it working again and it only opens halfway lol. But its better than broken!
Nice Ride!
Damn bro you videos just blew up congrats
Thank you =)
X5 the Best!!!
Couldn't agree more =)
what rim size and tire size do you have on that e53? is this a stock rim?
Love the channel and the look of the rig. Have you ever thought about swapping your grill for an aftermarket blacked out one? I did it on my 2010 it looks really good and is a fairly cheap add on. It would look great with your color combo. Happy trails!
We tried it out by painting the chrome flat black but it all just chipped away haha. Maybe we'll try again as i did like the way it looked. Thanks for the comment!
X5 Overland There are some decent matte ones on eBay. Not expensive and decent quality.
Sweet setup! Gonna go check out rest of the videos. Cute dog too! What's his name and breed?
My dream car
Ours as well =)
Looks cool, can you give more info about the 2 inch lift kit and the tyres as would like to do the same with my x5 please?
We have a separate video on our channel you can check out =)
I really like your tire selection. Can you provide the tire size(265/70/18)? Thank you
pls.send us vdo clip how to lift 2 incs.
We have a video on our channel you can check out =)
how do you like the Ceika coilovers? According to their website, you can get them custom made with a lift rather than going with the FMU lift kit? I am looking at replacing shocks and coilovers anyways and figured it would be great to go that route rather than doing separate lift kit and shocks.
Yeah, their website is a bit misleading. They can only do stock ride height for the X5 so the lift kit would still be needed. I did however find a few lift kits on ebay that are similar but substantially cheaper. I like the Ceika components so far and the ride quality is much improved. The springs are a bit stiffer as well which helped us with our expedition weight.
Great video, god bless can you tell me how lifted The BMW that high, think of buyin one in Europe over the Pond
Heck yeah, We actually have a video about it if you want to check it out. But its basically a fluid motorunion 2 inch lift kit and some Ceika rally coilovers.
@@X5Overland thanks mate. So You ship to Europe ?
Hi, did the tires produce any code on the computer? Great setup
No, but the speedometer runs a little slow
How did you mount the traction boards? Where’s your spare tire...or are you using run flats?
We mounted the traction boards with a thru bolt and a knob so we can easily get them down. We dont currently have a spare tire as we used the space where it used to go for a dual battery, subwoofer, and air compressor. But a spare tire carrier is on my to do list =)
I do not think there is a diff lock on that vehicle so maybe a Winch would be a good idea for situations where you might be stuck?
You are correct. It has traction control but that only does so much. I was looking into lockers though so its a maybe. A winch is definitely on the want list but we need to build some bumpers first =)
@@X5Overland couldn't you put lsd im bmws
x5 是很好開的車 很高興跟你開同款的 我的車也是露營專用 我來至台灣
I just wish you could buy front and rear lockers for this….
Does your onboard system throw errors because of the lift kit?
What is the number of the wheel and if you can get me a picture for the wheel
How did the X5 hold up with that diesel? Do you still have it? I’m looking at one as a daily drive/travel vehicle. Have you had any problems with it?
Ours isnt a diesel model but we do daily it. We have had plenty of problems but nothing too hard to handle lol
WOW! I would like to know more about how to get the 2" lift and the extra battery setup for my 3.0i '06
Of course. We have a few videos on the subject but we have a fluid motorunion 2" lift kit and a dual battery setup where the spare tire used to live, hooked to the alternator with a dedicated switch so we dont run both batteries down.
where did you get your lift kit? I also have an 04 x5 Im looking to build similar to this. No lift places will work on it though lol
We bought our lift from Fluid Motorunion but Ebay also sells kits now.
Where did you purchase your 2" lift kit and tubular roof rack?
2" lift kit was from fluid motorunion but they sell them on eBay now. I built the roofrack myself. =)
What happened? did you break up?
Hey! What size tires are you using and what are the suspension mods
We are currently running 33's by 10.5" wide Falken Wildpeak at3w on the factory 18" wheels. We also have a 2 inch lift provided by Fluid MotorUnion.
where did you get your roof rack?
We actually built it ourselves. We have a video on it if you're interested =)
Wheel size?
How many miles on it now ? And what engine does it have ?
256000 miles and it has the M54 straight 6 engine.
hi, where did you buy the lift kit?
We purchased the lift kit from Fluid MotorUnion
Can you flat tow the x5??
I believe it needs to be on a flat bed. But im unsure
Hey bro what’s the background music?
All the music is listed in the description box below the video. =)
great✌️✌️✌️why not 4.4???
Good question lol. I dont really have a good answer for you unfortunately. If we were to start again, we would get the diesel =)
@@X5Overland ok.....where is diesel e53 x5 in usa??????? i never see
Haha, I havent seen any personally but I'm sure they are out there somewhere.
@@X5Overland only europe ((((e53
Can i know your tire size and profile?
They are 33 x 10 on an 18 inch rim
hi what tire size? and how can lift
Right now we are running 33"x 10.5" tires.
Winch ..
A winch is something i was looking at but i don't think we'll be doing too difficult of trails this time. But great idea!
@@X5Overland ua-cam.com/video/pQDLl6t8Lwg/v-deo.html
I have done it ;).
2" Lift, All Terains + Winch. Works pretty good. Video link is "First time heavy offroad test" with this setup.
Todo: Mud Tires + Roofrack and probably some iron plate for gearbox and transfercase + Radiator.
@@niemsik Hello. Could you show us more about how the winch is installed? My X5 now has a lift of about 2", at-tires, and increased rear suspension travel. Now I'm thinking about MT tires and installing a winch.
Not trying to be rude but you need to tow a 2nd X5 to have all the parts to fix it. Respectfully you chose the good motor; the 3.0. The 4.4, 4.6 and 4.8 are junk. But your rear bags can go out, T case are known for exploding. Transmission as well. The cooling system on the 3.0 is all plastic and prone to failure. Suggest upgrading it I mean to be quite frankly y’all chose the wrong exploring vehicle. It can be but boy I hope y’all have deep pockets considering it’s carrying all that extra weight and you have the smaller power plant. All that is doing is straining that thing, full time all wheel drive and premium fuel ONLY so you are so limited to where you can travel before you have ping and knocking occur cause you’ll either be stranded or forced to use 87. HOPING you don’t currently run 87 in it. Sure octane booster but seriously y’all must have a lot of money to go out and travel in a E53 X5. Let alone with 225K. Before anyone says any stories about this and that, if it was a diesel. It would have lot more strength and get over 17 MPG (with his lift and tire set up plus weight)
Yeah. Not a very bright idea!
You are correct on a lot of points! But we choose not to limit ourselves when it comes to adventure. We started with using what we had and worked our way up from there =). I love that our X5 is unique and I love the challenge of working on it (just not in the middle of nowhere haha). We upgraded all suspension components and went with Ceika rally coilovers all around to avoid any issues with components that werent designed for the stress. We considered a diesel but we have been getting around just fine (so far) But when she blows up, we'll consider it a little harder lol. Currently the X5 weighs a tad more than it did from the factory and we have considerably more wind resistance lol. As far as fuel goes, i hate that it runs premium. Its about $80 to fill from empty. We haven't ran into a situation where a gas station didn't have premium but we do carry octane booster as a backup. Thank you so much for your very well thought out comment! Its refreshing to get others perspective on the X5
Hi
Hello
@@X5Overland omg he responded 😭
Haha, of course!
Nice setup . But how can you live in car with smelly dog 🤮
Haha, we stayed pretty clean most of the time =P
Why x5 tho
Well it started with my obsession with the E53, then an obsession with overlanding...the rest is history =)
Did you got married?
Sure did! =)
@@X5Overland 🎶🎵🏆💯🐸
Sorry but this is a terrible choice for an overlander. There are so many better and cheaper options in the long run given the amount of repairs and maintenance
I partially agree lol. It can be a bit pricey to repair but not MUCH more than a regular repair on any other vehicle. I do most of the repairs myself which saves a lot of money too. Money aside, it has been a very capable vehicle on and off road! =) It might break a little more often than some other vehicles haha, but thats the price you pay to be unique. Plus it looks pretty =P Thanks for your comment, no offense taken
Don’t dis the ride, they keep it in good condition for sure!
I disagree mate, I've had three Land Rovers that have cost more to run and repair than my X5, Toyotas might not go wrong very often but when they do you need to remortgage your house and ransom you children to pay to fix them, mine has only developed one problem in 5 years, they're a brilliant car, all you need to do to get going is put some decent tyres on them and you're off, obviously they'll never compete with a bespoke off-roader with high and low range but for moderate conditions they offer a lot of comfort, fuel economy, style and fun.
