In 2021, I now recommend these inexpensive mattress toppers. They are among the least expensive I've found for natural or organic latex! Plus, they come with a free cover! (affiliate link) www.pjtra.com/t/SENKS0tKTUZDSElOTkdKQ0dMSExITg
We just purchased an RV and our “master bedroom “ looks exactly like yours and our bed is a little softer than our concrete walkway. THIS is an amazing idea, thank you!!!!
I Bought a $179.00 memory foam 12 inch mattress and used a handheld electric turkey slicer to trim 5 inches off of the top that goes next to the wall and rounded the corners and put the mattress cover and sheets and we have been enjoying it for two years.
Being tall, I didn't like all the disadvantages of a "short queen." So I cut some 3/4 inch plywood to shape to extend my bed to the standard 80 x 60 inches of a standard queen mattress, and screwed it in place. I lost some walking space, but IMO a bad bed will give you poor sleep, so it was worth it. I got a new queen foam mattress from Amazon with over a thousand reviews and a five star rating for $270.00. then I put a $60.00 mattress topper over it that I got from Big Lots. That's $330, plus $30.00 for the plywood for $360.00 total. Still dirt cheap compared to a standard spring mattress, and now I have a more comfortable bed in my trailer than I do at home. And not using the mattress that came with the trailer was a blessing in itself that's probably got a monetary equivalent to it somehow. It was worse than a box spring, both squishy and with the feel of its few large springs coming right up at you if you sat on it. No way would I want to use that. It went to the dump.
I agree. The beds they give you in an RV are horrible. A good night’s sleep is important. Glad you had the room to add on the extra bed frame. Great idea that everyone can do!
Great video! We were looking for an idea to use for the dinette bed. The cushions that came with it just didn't cut it. We keep the dinette permanently folded into a bed, so we started looking for a custom mattress to fit but they all were so expensive. After seeing this video we ordered a king size 3 in topper from Sleep On Latex, and cut it down into two pads each 66" x 41.25". We now have a 6" latex mattress where the dinette was, so much more comfortable. To cut ours I figured that a reciprocating saw would work just as well as the electric carving knife. I was wrong, you really need those 2 blades working together to make the cut. Thanks for the great idea.
john lisiesky Thank you so much for letting me know! I’m so glad that you ordered sleep on latex and that you’re finding such success with it! Yeah, it seems like it should be so easy to cut the latex but it really is more difficult than you might imagine. I’m thrilled you were able to finally get a comfortable dinette bed. Have a great time traveling! ⛰
A utility knife works fine for this. But rather than trying to saw through it, make several shallow cuts and just keep going deeper each pass. It takes about 2 minutes. The electric knife is a good idea though. So you put a mattress topper on a mattress. Brilliant. Who'd have thought of that & had the smarts to put it on video 😉🤔😂😂 KIDDING I did the same thing in my van. I love it.
Although it will be covered with a fitted sheet, I would, nonetheless, place the cut end against the head wall just for aesthetics for those times when the bed is stripped-down for laundry day.
FYI One reason a lot of RV mattresses are poor is - bc to try and keep the weight of the unit down they buy in lightweight mattresses - think about how heavy a quality house mattress is............. then it makes sense
I personally have a problem with a lot of toppers, too. I find that most of them are way too soft and don’t support as needed. I love the Sleep on Latex toppers and still use this one (yes, still firm yet soft) and their mattress, too. (Two different locations, so I don’t use them together.)
Craigslist: Denver Mattress, Queen Full 80", Supreme Eurotop 11"... Brand new in box. $100....$522 on "E-Trailer." With patience... everything comes...
Foam is the best to sleep on.I did sleep on foam in my childhood because we had a tiny space and angled wall so we had 4 single matress on top of each other and we pulled one down for the night for each person. It was non of this nonsense buying huge thick unmenigeable expensive useless matresses
Great video Thanks! I have a 72 x 47 RV dinette mattress. Did you tailor the cover to the size you cut the mattress or just fold the excess under. Thanks 🙏🏼
We just folded the excess under. I also kept the piece that I cut off. We actually use the mattress topper on a normal size queen mattress now, and just placing the extra piece at the end, it doesn't really feel any different.
Thankyou this video was very helpful to make his I've been looking at latex mattresses. When you said you really enjoyed this one And it has support but yet softness and it doesn't build up heat ask to make you sweat all night long. I appreciate you doing this video take care, I almost forgot I looked on Amazon and they have the soft also the medium and firm. Which one did you pick? I am a back sleeper and I'm hundred and 35 pounds and I've been a waitress my whole life so my lower back kind of hurts a little bit. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Carrie! Glad it helped! We still really enjoy this RV mattress hack and definitely think it was the right choice for us! I think the medium would be great for you. That's what I picked, and I have hip problems. We just got a soft mattress topper from another company for another bed and it's not supportive at all. So I think the medium would be great (based on my experience) for your situation. Hope you enjoy it!
Did you add this to your existing mattress or remove it and just sleep on the Latex? Wondering if the 3" latex is sufficient given a firm platform of solid wood without slats for my purpose?
I added it to the top. I thought we could use just the topper on the wooden platform. Ours was plywood, no slats. But it felt like I sunk right to the board underneath. For adults, don't think that's a viable alternative.
I can't say for sure about dimensions with every RV. Many of the RVs do have mattresses 5 inches shorter (so convert that to cm for your specific size). However, many newer RVs do realize that people want their normal beds so they are making room for traditional sized mattresses. It's all going to be dependent on your specific situation.
Do you think you could sleep just on those 3 inches of foam on a plywood? I was thinking of getting 3 inches of the 44 ILD for a car conversion for a bench/storage chest.
Hi Andrei, I honestly thought of doing that. I took the mattress off and tried it. For me, it was just too uncomfortable. I need a lot more cushioning to make a supportive bed. However, it wasn't terrible. So maybe you'd be okay. With back issues and joint pain, though, it was not an option for me.
@@cubul32 IKEA sells a 4 inch thick mattress that I have tried. I still think it is too thin and offers no support in the long term. Everyone's needs are different for great quality sleep. For a mattress, I'd say 6-9 inches, but I realize that's not always doable in a van or car. There will be that payoff between easy to fit into a vehicle and what offers restorative sleep that is important to your health.
Hi! I actually bought a medium firmness. They are only available on Sleep on Latex's site I believe. I'd do the soft one probably. The medium was just right for me, but my husband didn't like it because a little too firm. So with the hard as a rock RV mattress underneath, I'd think the soft firmness would be great - or medium, depending on your preference.
Hi Kathy! No, I don’t think it’s hot to sleep on. Everyone is different in their preferences, though. What I really like about Sleep on Latex, the company I showed in the video, is that they give you 30 days return policy for mattress toppers. Most other companies say no returns for toppers. So you can try it out to see.

Ha ha! Softer than a concrete walkway.. Yep, that's one way to describe it. The beds are horrible that they give you!

Definitely a great trick to buy a mattress and use a trimmer to customize it to your unique RV size!
Amazon has a 6" memory foam, queen RV size for $167. That's what I bought, came in a box and it opened just like this video and it's comfy.
can you give a link?
You can cut up the extra foam to stuff inside a pillow if it's non-toxic.

Glad you were able to get it cut. A good nights sleep is a must for sure.
SOOO very true!
Clamping between screwed together boards and a knife sometimes works. Sure electric knife is best.

I have bought two different kinds of toppers and still haven't found one that works. Do you sink in to this topper? So far your video has me sold.

We're spoiled, we bought our trailer used and the previous owner had put a TempurPedic mattress in.

Nice video thank you I got lucky and I was able to put one in my spare bedroom a pillow top queen mattresses in the RV and it fit perfectly
Wonderful! So good to hear!
That mattress has traveled far!
Yes, it has!
So I’m confused. did you put that on top of the RV mattress and use both of them? or did you get rid of the RV mattress and just sleep on the topper ?
I put the topper on top of the RV mattress and it was very comfortable! A new mattress would have cost way more than buying the topper.
Good vid loved the shadows 😂only joking
Does this latex mattress still work for you? I have an RV and looking for a similar solution.
Definitely does! We still have this topper and I have a mattress from the same company and still highly recommend them both.
Thank you!

@@GetGreenBeWell what firmness topper did you get? Soft 20 ILD , medium 30ILD , or firm 40 ILD?
Daniel Matheny It was Medium
@@GetGreenBeWell Sorry last question, what thickness? 1, 2 or 3"
Nevermind, rewatched and saw 3" thanks
Just like a tummy tuck 😂
So if a standard mattress is 190cm long, would that mean that an RV mattress is approx 175cm long?

Does it roll back up as well? We want to try it in a pop up style RV (Jayco Hybrid)...Thanks...
Vonnie McB It does roll up, but not very tightly. It will be big, but it does roll and should be secured with rope.
