Hi, wonderful explanation, after the lecture, I knew much more about the cultural metaphor, I am a teacher of Intercultural Communication, Can I use it for my teaching? Thanks.
Just below the surface are the things we can think about consciously and use language to describe. At the deeper levels, it's more about how people feel. These are the things we don't quite understand and are very difficult to articulate. We can only explore these parts of our culture (and ourselves) through the arts.
I used Camtasia to edit the video and Photoscape for the images. Photoscape is free and great for beginners, but I suggest taking the time to learn how to use Photoshop. It is way more useful in the long run.
Thank you for watching. The song is called Ievan Polkka, and is a traditional folk/polka song from Finland. This version is by a Japanese Vocaloid (computer generated) called Hatsune Miku.
Thanks for the comment, but to be honest, that would be a little too in depth for our website. Our videos are designed just as an introduction to the subject, not a definitive guide. You might be interested in this:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceberg_theory
I agree for sure, but we should also remember that different cultures can measure success differently. For example, the U.S. has dominated the world culturally and economically for the last 100 years, but if we look at research on general happiness of the population, then there are other cultures that might consider themselves as more successful.
I understand if you don't agree with my choices because this isn't an exact science. I have The Media as external because most mass media outlets are international organizations. I have Demographics as external because it is often affected by outside influences and events, including, migration, war and disease. I doubt there will ever be full agreement on many of these kinds details, but the idea of the iceberg as a metaphor for culture will remain a useful study tool.
Music at the end made me smile. Thank you!
This is the best video I have seen on the cultural iceberg. Thank you!
Thanks a lot dear sir..
Your video lecture is very simple and informative..

To be fair, the song itself is a good example of a traditional polka being transformed into an iconic Japanese song between the two cultures lol

So what would be the difference between the two levels below the surface ?

nice video, much appreciated, can you please suggest me any software for making iceberg model?

All cultures are as equally evolved. But not all of them are as equally successful.
