    If HIPAA is anything like data protection or GDPR you can do what you want with your personal info. But the medical professionals holding it cannot without your knowledge or permission.
    Like your GP can't just show your sensitive information to whoever they want.
    But you still definitely don't need to put these documents online and it wouldn't be wise to if it contains all your identifying personal details like your address, DOB or (if you have one) your health service number

    • @MissSpaz
      @MissSpaz Рік тому +4

      It's pretty much the same thing as the GDPR. Unfortunately a lot of medical professionals don't take HIPPA seriously enough in the states, so that plus people pretending they had a medical exemption not to wear a mask during the pandemic has lead to a ton of misinformation.

      Came here to say this! If someone wants to willingly share their OWN medical records online, that is completely within their right to do so and it is NOT a HIPAA violation. However, I totally agree that no one is obligated to publicize any medical records online, ever! Source: I am a mental health professional.

    I have autism and I don't have any "papers", like I have related papers such as referral letters to services and stuff but I don't think they just give you a piece of paper that says "this person is disabled in this particular way" like some kind of certificate 😆
    If they do, I must have lost it or something, I've just never been given anything like that so idk if it even exists. The only stuff I have that "proves" I have autism is letters where they were inviting me to various places for testing but even then that was before. So I honestly feel like I actually don't even have any proof haha.

      I'm autistic and I have official documents about it. You should too if your diagnosis is official (self diagnosis is valid as long as there's enough research involved but that's beside the point). You pretty much need the papers as proof if autism has any effect on your studies or your job, also if you need any special accomodations that can't be given to just anyone.

    It’s not a HIPPA violation for a patient to obtain copies of their medical records and share them with whomever they choose.
    I understand why people would want to see proof of a claimed condition. I’ve seen endless amounts of people fake a myriad of medical conditions.

  • @yellowrose0910

    "Tell me you have no idea what HIPAA is without telling me".
    HIPAA does not apply to anyone except health workers. You can do what you want with your own information. Any non-health worker disclosing your health information is not violating HIPAA, although they might be violating other US laws.

  • @MissSpaz
    @MissSpaz Рік тому +24

    So, actually, it's not a HIPPA violation for you to show your own medical records online. HIPPA is only for medical professionals, they're the only ones who can get in trouble for violating HIPPA. I could post all my medical records online for anyone to see, but if a nurse did the same thing, she would likely have her license pulled for violating HIPPA.
    Other than that, you're 100% correct. Also like. I know doctors are supposed to have perfect records, but I'm 32. Which means that when I was diagnosed with a lot of things, doctors were't fully digital.
    I was on ADHD meds as a teen and I stopped taking them at 19 (2009). When I was 26ish, I decided I wanted to go back on them. HOWEVER, the records that diagnosed me with ADHD we're missing. Thankfully I had a good psych who took my word and just redid the records.
    Also, do these people think we get a piece of paper saying "so and so has been diagnosed with ___"? That's not how it works lmao

    • @Teknikah
      @Teknikah Рік тому +1

      The best we can do where I am is just print out that single entry from your "problems" list then put the doctor's name stamp on it. Everything you're diagnosed with or sometimes symptoms you present with is generally documented on your record. So if you go to A&E and break your arm, when we get the letter telling us that, we will document "fracture of arm" or whatever.
      If you wanted a formal letter writing and signing you gotta pay for that as a private admin request.
      But my god is it a pain in the arse when decades old paper notes go walkies. Especially great when a patient registers in a new area with complex health conditions, you check the records and see zilch.

I was once leaving a building when one of the (very scary) history teachers grabbed my bright pink baseball cap off of my head and said I could get it back after school. Aged 11 and about 6 feet from a very sunny (at least for Britain) outside, I went into full panic mode going "no, I need it. I need it.", as I was pushed by the crowds of students going to other lessons towards the door, and him responding "no, you don't". I can't remember how I got it back (I think it was my friends next to me saying that yes, I do need it), but let's just say that neither of my parents were happy when I told them later on that evening.
