Geez. The brothers really ended up on opposite ends of the spectrum. One became the absolute best friend a Hobbit could ever ask for, and the other became a threat to the entire universe.
Chunk's confession always breaks me up. I wonder how they all got through it without laughing. Joey P. seemed to have the hardest time holding it together.😅
Oh, I haven't gotten that far yet. If she got the joke, she the first reactor that I have seen get it. When I bring it up in the comments, I get name called.
It took me almost a decade to get it. It was watching grumpy old men, and the dad says "He's taking the old log to the beaver. He's taking one-eyed Willy to the optometrist!" Glad I wasn't the only one who was slow on the uptake. 😅
Ah ah! I've always watched it in my native language (bed=cause the dubbing is excellent!), so I had never really considered One-eyed Willy this way, though I know what willy also means in english ;)
"They actually found gold. Dang, that's not a twinkie. That's disappointing." Gold can buy many twinkies! Money can be exchanged for goods and services! :)
For me, my favorite moment from Mouth was at the wishing well and his whole little monologue about "this is MY wish, and it didn't come true, so I'm taking it back" is very touching. He's not just a funny character, but also has some depth beyond his years.
I actually just moved to where this was filmed, Astoria, Oregon. I didn't move there because of The Goonies but it's cool that they still take pride in having played host way back when. Having lived in so many cities across the country, it's a breath of fresh air to live there. It's pretty with lots of breweries and random shops. There is a great mixture of generations, meaning some young people and some older people.
Yeah, Astoria and it's surroundings is a pretty cool place. I've lived a short drive away for a few decades and it's always been a great place to visit.
@@zandylovesrisk The only location no longer there, is the restaurant they built for the fratelli's hideout. Although, the owners of Mikey's house, no longer allows visitors, and the street is even resident access only now. :( the Goonies police station is a museum dedicated to films that took place in Astoria, with the original Fratelli's jeep outside. I was there a few years ago, amazing.
After visiting Astoria, I wonder how many times they had to do re-takes or ADR at the Goonies' House because of all the sea lions barking down on the piers. Sea lions are fuckin' loud, y'all.
I truly love how the ending of this movie moves you to tears. The Goonies has a very, very deep meaning to me, since the first moment I watched it back in the 80s. Thank you very much for having enjoyed this wonderful master piece 🤗
Well, considering three crews worth of Spanish ships let an Italian captain convince them they were in India after they accidentally stumbled into the Americas. I mean, stranger things have happened.

Data did indeed plan on being chased. He was bullied. His devices were to protect himself. As a small kid that was about their age, I identified with that and connected with his character.
Yes that is the kid from Temple of Doom his name is Ke Huy Quan. He just recently won an Oscar for best supporting actor in "Everything Everywhere All At Once". He is also really incredible person. Him and his family fled veitman after North veitman took control of the country. He was in a refugee camp until he got to come to the US with a refugee program. Then just a few years later was in Temple of doom.
I watched this many times as a kid in the late 80s and early 90s thanks to VHS. It's still one of those movies totally worth watching again and again, even decades after release.
Having grown up watching this movie, I knew Sean would be a great Samwise before Fellowship even came out. His 'our time' speech under the well is incredible. If you aren't familiar with Sean's adoptive father John Astin, he is the original Gomez Addams and a very funny actor.
@@candicelitrenta8890 For sure! I usually assume that is more widely known, and a lot of people mistakenly think John is his bio-dad because of the last name. But Patty Duke is also a talent to explore 👍

Sloth was played by John Matuzak who hailed from Oak Creek, WI. "Tooz" as he was often referred to, played 11 years in the NFL most notably with the Oakland Raiders where he was a two time Super Bowl Champion. He once picked John Madden up and bench pressed him three times. He also competed in the 1978 World's Strongest Man competition and finished 9th. He began acting in the late 70's, appearing in notable films such as North Dallas Forty and Caveman with Ringo Starr. He also appeared on several popular TV shows such as M*A*S*H, The Duke's Of Hazzard and Miami Vice. He's best remembered for his role as Sloth on The Goonies. Tooz died at the age of 38 in 1989 from an accidental overdose of the prescription painkiller Darvocet. He was also found to have a damaged heart from years of steroid use.
The movie that made my friends and I Goonies as well. Still one of my faves. That kind of film that makes me want to go out and have an adventure. "85,. One of the best years of my life.
One of my all time fav movies as a kid growing up. They really dont make them like this anymore. Was full of adventure, and fun, and also bordered on adult without being too grown up! - LOVED IT
I'm the same age as the goonies, watched this movie at 10, I didn't get all the innuendo but I absolutely love this film, hard to hear the song without thinking of this film, we all loved Raiders/Indiana Jones, so this was like a "kids" version, we could all get into, we all went into tunnels, drainage ditches, caves, pretending to look for treasure because of this film
Stumbled upon this by pure coincidence. This movie is GOLD! It’s not just nostalgia. They truly do NOT make ‘em like this anymore 🤷♂️ The 80s was a MAGICAL/historical time for the movies! It’s THE decade to beat. Pure movie-magic like The Goonies, The Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Star Wars, E.T (the list truly goes on and on) EVERYTHING with Spielberg attached to it is just UNbeatable! The love, the craft, the heart, the charm, characters, GREAT stories, and the overall iconic movie-making on display is just unfathomable. All of that NetFlix BS-produced soulless crap now a days, truly is CRAP in comparison! We’ll never ever again receive such a beautiful time for films.. “Let me guess. YOU grew up in the 80s?”.. Damn straight! And I’m SO proud of that 🫶 Thanks for this reaction, greatly enjoyed it! 🥳 And tonight I’m gonna watch Goonies again, for the “40th” time 🥰

The whole statue of David scene is a riot. "That's my mom's most favorite piece!" "You wouldn't be here if it wasnt!" Best ding dong joke ever! Plus, after Chunk glues the winky upside-down: "You dork! If God made us like that, we'd all be pissing in our faces!"
That "island" in the background of the race is Haystack Rock by Cannon Beach, Oregon. The city with the charming houses is Astoria, Oregon. The hideout was in Ecola State Park just north of Cannon Beach. This is also where the carnival scene for Kindergarten Cop was filmed.

Fun Fact: When Chunk called the cops and the officer accused him of prank calling, he referenced a time that he called in about little creatures that multiply with water. This is in reference to Gremlins, which Mouth has a small role in that movie.
If you listen when they're going into the hole under the fire place, "Mikey" calls his brother by his real life name by accident and no one caught it during editing, so that mistake stayed in the movie haha they talked about it in the commentary for the movie.
We had a family on our block that had 5 kids and one Halloween, they dressed up as the Goonies. The dad was sloth, the mom was Chunk, the oldest daughter was Andi, the oldest son (who was also the most talkative and would just go up to anybody and start chatting) was Mouth. But the cutest was their youngest daughter, maybe 4 or 5 years old.....as Mama Fratelli. She had the beret and sweater and everything! Also, the house in the movie is now a Goonies museum.
The Goonies was filmed in Astoria, Oregon; the same town where Kindergarten Cop was filmed. In fact the school from Kindergarten Cop is visible in several shots. Fun Fact: After filming Richard Donner decided to go on vacation at his home in Hawaii, in order to escape the young cast. Little did he know arrangement’s had been made to fly the cast out to Hawaii without his knowledge. The young cast got there before Donner & took over his house 😂😂😂 Also, if you notice Dennis Nedry in Jurassic Park wears multiple outfits that are similar to those worn by The Goonies; those being a Yellow Raincoat , a Hawaiian Shirt & a Grey Sports Jacket.
Miranda, have you watched Gremlins (1984) yet? when Chunk called the Sheriff, the Sheriff asked if it was about something that sounded like the movie Gremlins
The kid playing Data, Ke Huy Quan, recently won on Oscar this year(2023) for Everything Everywhere All At Once. Another fun fact is that the actor playing Chunk, Jeff Cohen, is his real life entertainment lawyer and handles his contract for Everything Everywhere. And if you haven't figured him out either, the dude that plays Sam/Mickey's brother, Bran/Jeff Brolin is Marvel's Thanos and Cable in Deadpool 2. RIP Richard Donner. Dude always made sick movies, from Superman 1978(Which Sloth references with even the movie's score by John Williams when he rips the shirt open revealing the S) to Lethal Weapon. Goonies is one of those "comfy" movies for me to see especially during end of year like from Autumn like Thanksgiving/Christmas season, same with Die Hard etc. The Sandlot is more of a summer watch. Horror or teen spooky movies like Silver Bullet, The Lost Kids, Monster Squad, Fright Night etc are good also for October/Halloween season.
As someone who’s 20yrs older than you, I’m absolutely loving your reactions to all these classic movies!! Love your enthusiasm and attitude! Definitely binging all your content, loving it so much! Keep up the great work, I’m in Ohio too!! 🙌😃
The jokes about the drugs in the drawer, would be enough to get this movie an R-rating today. I miss the 80:s, when even kids movies had the balls to be non PC 😂
It has nothing to do with the concept of PC. Being PC in the 80s was being misoginist and slightly ravist. You incels need to stop being so comically dumb.
The TV version had an entirely different scene with different dialogue - I forget what he said but it was nothing to do with drugs or sexual torture devices...
Y’all are ridiculous, shit is still the same more or less, y’all just don’t notice because of your perspective. It’s really not that different. Seriously though, what’s your excuse for South Park and other shows that get pretty wild, they shouldn’t exist if things were like y’all say
"He's getting some sick enjoyment out of this and the other two are just disturbed..." Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano, and Anne Ramsey are just having a blast listening to Jeff Cohen go 🤣🤣🤣 It's a real shame Jeff didn't keep acting (he's the one who became an entertainment lawyer). When Chunk calls the cops, they don't believe him, and they say it's like when he reported the little creatures that multiply in water, that's a reference to Gremlins, which Corey Feldman (Mouth) also appeared in. When Sloth rips off his shirt to reveal the Superman shirt and the music stats playing, that's the theme music from the 1978 Superman movie starring Christopher Reeve. They built the pirate ship for real, and the reactions of the kids when they see it are genuine. After the movie was done filming, they tried to find someone to take the ship, but nobody wanted it, so it was eventually scrapped. :(
The Goonies, a time when they made adventure movies for the whole family. Who comes up with something like the Slick Shoes? Someone who watched the old James Bond movies, loved the gadgets, but doesn't have a car to instal the oil slick sprayers ;-)
The Pirate Ship was actually offered to anyone who wanted it, but there were no takers, so they tore it apart, it was actually a functional ship, it was sea worthy.
The drug scene is somewhat ironic, since Corey Feldman, the actor of Mouth, became a drug addict later on. He even referenced it when all the grown up former kid actors did the audio commentary for the DVD together with director Richard Donner. Someone once said that only people who saw Goonies as teenagers appreciate the movie, but your reaction proves otherwise. The stiff in the fridge was one of Spielbergs go to stuntmen. He can, e.g., be seen in E.T. during a scene when the police try to catch the kids on the bikes. The music is by Dave Grusin, who is mainly a jazz composer an pianist, but he also did some very good soundtracks, often for Sidney Pollack like „Three Days of the Condor“ or „Tootsie“. The latter is a very good comedy from the 80s.
John Matuszak also had, and died from, drug problems. But according to every actor and the director, on the set he was probably the favorite person involved. Side note: he participated in one of the early World's Strongest Man competitions at 6'8" and 320 lbs.

The houses are Astoria, Oregon. The shot doesn't really do it justice as far as size. The rock (Haystack Rock) is Cannon Beach, Oregon and Ecola State Park, about 30-40 minutes south of Astoria.
Fun fact: when they all saw the ship, All their reactions were real cause that was the first time they saw it. The people who made the ship wanted to surprise everyone.
When I saw this as a teenager,I never got the "One-Eyed Willie" jokes. I'm 55 now and watching you watch this for the first time was great. And your symbolism of Ma &Sloth/Ma & Brothers parallels where on point. I'll never watch this movie again without thinking of the one-eyed willie joke now.😮😮
In 1989 I attended the national Boy Scout jamboree in Virginia - It's a big extravaganza where scout troops converge from across the country. One of the key highlights of that jamboree was when Steven Spielberg showed up in person to introduce the new cinematography merit badge. Spielberg was an eagle scout himself. I'm glad that he, despite his busy schedule, was willing to give back to the scouting organization.
Saw this in 1985 opening night. First date night with someone I can’t believe ever went out with me again. Went to get our paychecks at Disneyland where we worked. Get there and I realize I left my wallet at home, went all the way back to my house, then back to get our checks. Take her home after the bank and agree to go out to dinner later. Pick her up and go to the restaurant, which is when I realize I forgot my wallet for the second time. She said she’d pay so we didn’t go back to my house again. Then we went and saw Goonie. I honestly expected she’d never go out with me again. We were together about 4 months. Still friends today. Had a great time at the movie, but I never expected her to go out with me again.
This was my favorite movie growing up and still ranks up there for me. In my head canon Sloth and Chunk grew up together and went on adventures for the rest of their lives.
One thing beside sloth's relationship with Chunk That makes him not a monster is the fact that depsite being tormented by his brothers and mistreated by his mom He still goes back to help save them and get them out just the same as he does the kids.
Back in the late 80s, when I was like 12, I had this movie pirated by my uncle, first to Betamax, then to VHS. Of course this was crappy quality, still managed to be one of my fave 80s movies.
Fun little thing... According to maritime law Mikey has full salvage rights to The Inferno... So not only do they have the gems from his marble bag, but they can legally claim the rest of the ships contents
There was a period of time where movie trailers would use music from recently popular movies, even if they weren't from the same franchise. The song from the open credits was one of those.
I love this reaction, Miranda. I saw The Goonies in the theater when I was about 12 and freaking loved it. Cut to 28 years later (2013) I was able to visit Astoria, Oregon where the film was shot. I have a picture of me in front of the Goonies' house and have video of walking up to Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach where the opening took place. The town of Astoria is so beautiful that I actually looked into moving there. But the housing cost and apartments and taxes were so ridiculously expensive that it wasn't possible. But I do have a picture of Astoria as my backdrop on Facebook lol.
The Executive Producer of The Goonies, Steven Spielberg, also directed “Data/Short Round” in The Temple of Doom. The director, Richard Donner, also directed Superman. Sloth as Superman was a subtle nod.
The Michael Jackson joke is funny because in 1985 Janet wasn't known as a musician (despite releasing 2 albums by then), she was known primarily as an actor from _Good Times_ and _Fame._ The next year she released _Control_ and then everything changed. By 1990 she was one of the biggest pop artists in the world alongside Madonna and her brother. So the fact that Chunk says "his sister" instead of "Janet" goes to show the film's age to some extent.
FUN FACT: When the Goonies see the pirate ship their reaction is genuine because its the first time the kid actors ever saw the set. They had never seen that prop which is an actual pirate ship mock-up/set.
Jeff Cohen who plays chunk grew up to be quite a hunk ! There are TV interviews with him as a kid and he is that character. Fun fact... Nedry from Jurassic Park wears the exact same outfits as the Goonies.
28:43 He didn't expect to do something wrong, but he _did_ expect to be tormented (and presumably chased) by bullies. Remember the name of his lights? "Bully Blinders."

Thank you for getting the One Eyed Willy joke. 😂
Imagine the crew laughing behind the camera each time people and the kids say it.
Dammit, I'm 58 and just now getting the joke.
@@jbrou12341 and same 😂
Oh, I haven't gotten that far yet.
That's disappointing."
Gold can buy many twinkies! Money can be exchanged for goods and services! :)
(Cheers, slips on peanut)
For me, my favorite moment from Mouth was at the wishing well and his whole little monologue about "this is MY wish, and it didn't come true, so I'm taking it back" is very touching. He's not just a funny character, but also has some depth beyond his years.
That scene, this movie, and Stand By Me was Peak Feldman. Aside from Lost Boys and The Burbs, it was all downhill for Feldman, unfortunately.
I'd make a list and on one weekend, go to where the filming locations were if still there.
Yeah, Astoria is awesome! I visited for the first time last summer and will be back again next month! Beautiful place!
As a child, I never questioned how the Spanish armada ended up off the coast of Oregon.
As an adult, it's one of the funniest things to me now 🤣🤣🤣
How do boats get anywhere? They floated, of course! 😉
Well, considering three crews worth of Spanish ships let an Italian captain convince them they were in India after they accidentally stumbled into the Americas. I mean, stranger things have happened.
Hey, it's the movie where Sam-Wise, Thanos and Donatello hunt for pirate treasure! :)
Don’t forget short round!
Goonies is such a quintessential 80s movie, everything you think when you hear 80s is here.
Also cool new set up.
Everything GOOD about the 80s. There's a lot wrong the movie only touches on, like the greed.
@@christopherb501Honestly, rewatching the Goonies after watching Stranger Things makes me want a crossover. We should build a time machine to set that up!
Data did indeed plan on being chased. He was bullied. His devices were to protect himself. As a small kid that was about their age, I identified with that and connected with his character.
He alluded to that with his "Bully Blinders".

There's been a commercial recently that had the Goonies adventure theme playing and it took me back!
Another iconic 80s kids movie is Flight of the Navigator
And I’m SO proud of that 🫶
Thanks for this reaction, greatly enjoyed it! 🥳 And tonight I’m gonna watch Goonies again, for the “40th” time 🥰

Really really loved your reaction to this fond childhood memory...
edit:
you wonder, that toby could sleep on your lap the whole time... i think that is called trust....
The young cast got there before Donner & took over his house 😂😂😂
Also, if you notice Dennis Nedry in Jurassic Park wears multiple outfits that are similar to those worn by The Goonies; those being a Yellow Raincoat , a Hawaiian Shirt & a Grey Sports Jacket.
The final scene of Free Willy was also filmed there.

I cannot BELIEVE you didn’t get that gremlin’s reference at 26:58 when Chunk was talking to the cops lol

One of the greatest films of my youth. Me and my gang were just like them and when we saw it acted even more like em. There was 4 of us.
The jokes about the drugs in the drawer, would be enough to get this movie an R-rating today. I miss the 80:s, when even kids movies had the balls to be non PC 😂
And the accidental kiss between a 16 year-old girl and a 12 year-old boy would be a half-step from CP now.

They built One-Eyed Willie's ship just for this movie, and (AArgh !!) was destroyed after shooting was completed.
Best fact sloth canonically was adopted by chunks family and then had his bar mitzvah using vhunks family name as his own
FUN FACT: When the Goonies see the pirate ship their reaction is genuine because its the first time the kid actors ever saw the set. They had never seen that prop which is an actual pirate ship mock-up/set.
