- In this video, we introduce Steam Deck Verified, a Steam Deck compatibility review program. We explain how we plan to help customers know what to expect when shopping for games and playing games on Steam Deck, and also answer some common developer questions.

I bet we'll see an avalanche of new Proton compatibility with the Deck, and I'm all for it.
I'm hoping for a similar surge for native support too, with potential high install base of the Steam Deck it might be the push needed for more Linux native games to try and get everything out of the hardware.
@@MichaelLindman Unless Valve Incentivizes Developers To Port It Natively, That Wont Happen And Developers Will Just Target Proton Compatability.
Proton is basically the Linux runtime environment for games. A game that targets Proton will work forever. A game that targets Linux needs constant maintenance because it will break in a future distro upgrade.
@@Lestibournes yes. I hope they just make it good for proton for that reason. Native, properly maintained versions of games will maybe be a thing only when Linux gets a way bigger market share than it is now. Like 10 folds at least
@@MichaelLindman which will be great until direct storage becomes necessary, then there won't be any native ports and we'll need proton.
Game developer, if you are reading this, PLEASE take some time to do an official and complete controller layout that properly uses the hardware available on the Deck, including the touchpads, back buttons, gyro, touchscreen if you need it. The Steam Controller is very fun, and optimizing the controls to my liking was a big part of it, but making proper controls for EACH game from scratch is absolutely the worst. If you have a great control scheme, I am much more prone to give your game attention.
And when I say touchpads i mean TOUCHPADS: touch menus, scroll gestures, double taps, outer edge touch, the versatility is there, you just need to implement it in a cool way and we'll love it.
Test camera control on the touchpads, radial menu on the joysticks, see if you can use the touch release of the touchpads to select an option of the radial menu without having to click L3/R3. That kind of thing. Explore the possibilities. It is all amazing hardware. Don't mess this up.
@@VinAbuqrq Mixed Input(Controller+Mouse) is also really important, it opens way more options to the game, even if it doesn't use everything on the official layout.
Uwu
listen to this guy developer!
You don't need to make proper controls from scratch. Use the goddamn community setups. They're RIGHT THERE. I swear 99% of people who claim they enjoyed using the steam controller only *pretend* that they actually owned a steam controller. People like you are the exact reason the steam controller died.
No surprises to see that TF2 is playable. For the past few months I've occasionally been trying out some trimping with the Switch Pro controller's gyro and it works nicely, can't wait to try that on deck.
demoknight tf2
To trimp in the game, you will have to trimp irl
yeet.
Imagine if deck users got an exclusive item
Yesterday I tried playing with the OG steam controller and it almost made me sick lol
cant wait to try it with real thumbsticks though
I can't wait to play with my Deck.
keep it in your pants billy. you should know better then to whip your deck out in public.
This is like the Wii jokes all over again.
Playing with my d e c k in a park
I'll leave mine in the box till I can get some protection. Otter boxes are my fav.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
This is good. Makes it easier for the casual people that has never tweaked games for low spec PC.
@Brandon Melendez me too, that’s why I have a brother who can help me with that. I play on playing around with the settings for SWTOR when I get my deck.
So basically you mean children?
@@Mayonnaise006 no, I really mean casual people that haven't even tweaked .ini files in their life.
Why do you think consoles are still in business, despite most games porting to PC nowadays? The answer's *convenience;* majority of players just want to install their games and play. At most, just going to the in-game settings.
I've met modders who are 12~14 years old & know a lot more about tweaking their GPU & CPU settings than casual adults, and I say this as a middle-aged guy whom has made mod skins & weapons for myself.
@@Mayonnaise006 I'm a programmer, but I've only ever played console games, so my experience with computer games is really lacking. I _could_ learn it through a bunch of trial and error, but that sounds tedious, boring and off-putting. I want a seamless experience for inexperienced soon-to-be PC gamers :)
@@zainmushtaq4347 same man, same..except for the computer programmer bit..
If there's one thing the Steam Deck might bring to the table, is the realistic possibility that I could finally uninstall the Windows partition on my computer and go full Arch
Windows is a cancer on PCs. I only use it because and when I have to.
TBH, you might want just to hold off on doing that completely, especially if youre on the low-end side of things. Proton/Wine compatability isn't as good as running the native 1909 LTSC/debloated 21h1 experience.
I'm glad that it seems like Valve really takes reviewing and improving compatibility quite seriously here. It's a win-win for everyone.
Seeing how at anytime Windows could knock Steam off it’s platform, it’s a safe bet to not bet on the current status quo always being as nice as it is.
Microsoft has always wanted to be the main and biggest player on PC, they want their cut.
@@ZambonieDude Microsoft has learned their lesson about closing off their platform that is open for anyone to release any software on, just like Apple before them on MacOS, but either way I can't really relate the relevance of your comment to mine? I just think it's nice as a full-time Linux user to have more and more stuff just work.
@@ZambonieDude if that happens MANY people will be mad since PC is still the main platform
Sadly, Valve doesn't.
More often than not, a game fully compatible with SteamOS is being broken in a couple of years or even months with another update.
Some times it's a lazy anti-cheat slapped on a badly made game, some times it's a crappy engine plugin, some times it's just a new launcher or even a bad symbol in a file path.
But the result is the same: now it's fully compatible, but some time later it won't even launch.
And another bad tendency is to release a sequel to a fully compatible game that doesn't even launch.
So even reviewing each patch isn't a solution, valve must review developers competency and dedication to issue the highest mark.
@@goury More often than not? I've experienced the opposite of that.
I've used Proton ever since it was released, and while there certainly have been a few cases like the one you picture, it's been much more common for me to see more and more games start working as they keep improving Proton in general. Don't forget it's based on Wine. That's not a project that accepts simple hacks to make games work, but encourages proper implementation of features and fixes so that it benefits _anything_ using those features. It'll just be available from that point onward.
And of course, if a dev decides to add some new anti-cheat mechanism down the line, no shit it would break that game. But even though I would argue that's on the dev and not Valve, I've still seen Valve do its best to reach out to the anti-cheat software companies to get it to work on Deck.
It's so rad to see how much work has been put into the developer experience here, and how it's just available for the public to see as well, not behind some SDK wall or whatever.
Because there is no other way around it? If you don't care about selling it on the steam deck as a dev then just ignore it I guess..
valve already feels like the most open and encouraged console manufacturer. nintendo has been in the industry for years yet they hear white noise when fans ask for something
Because Nintendo does not need to cater to its consumer base the same way other up and coming developers have to.
They've been releasing great games consistently for over FOUR decades and its paying off for them because nostalgia sells. All those kids who grew up playing their games are now hooked into their Ecosystem.
Not saying what they do or do not as a developer is right, just look at it from a business perspective. Their back catalog was the leading factor in the success of Switch.
EPIC is pulling that same shit with their joke of a store and predatory ecosystem, they're getting the kids locked in into their ecosystem and that is bound to pay off sometime in the near future.
@@AkshayKumarX a good example that comes to mind is joycon drift, it took nintendo months of time to even admit a problem existed and how all joysticks have finite lifespans and when telling consumers they are improving the technology of them in the switch oled only for it to use the exact same parts as before 👍
They definitely listen to feedback. Whether or not they want to accept it is hit or miss. They are very set in their ways and strongly stand by their values and standards they set for themselves. Some of it is frustrating, but some of it is what makes them shine.
@@Drstrange3000 Very true. They also don't really communicate much with the community. They might read a lot but they don't say much.
Shame Sony doesn't do this anymore now that they turned American. Nintendo is where it's at, and now more so with Valve. Valve is listening while certain parts of their bloated company continues to make horrible mistakes. They are competent, they still have rough spots within them. Their moderation team needs help, their support team is great. Just getting banned for every little thing is frustrating. Their VR is far better than Oculus so that makes me hyped for if and when they release wireless headsets. Oculus needs to topple to put them in their place for Facebook restrictions.
Steam has done decent things with review bombings, they however messed up with removing dislikes (if at all). Similar to UA-cam. With Steam Deck I'm seeing mostly good things. People however complained about the card reader. Hope it's worth it on the card storage front.
Damn, Steam has it going on. I can see why people are more excited for the Steam Deck than The Switch or the PS5
(And also im ready for tf2 on the go)
The next step has to be steam machines but made by valve and with a fixed hardware, not just rebadged PCs. Games for steam machines will have to be compatible with the steam controller, and shooters will have to have gyro aim.
@@souljastation5463 Tyler showed evidence that Valve is working on a new Steam Machine. The next step should be a Steam Phone, or just something of that size. Miss when portable also meant pocketable.
You should also test booting and playing a game in offline mode in the review process, otherwise consumers are going to have a clunky experience and defeats the purpose playing the Steam Deck on the go.
It's not a requirement for the green checkmark, but it's there as a "strong recommendation" on the development recommendations page of the Steamworks docs, to test games for working well in offline mode because as a portable device the Deck is more likely to have spotty internet connection.
Agree 100%. They should also check how a game behaves when you put the device to sleep, then wake up. I tried the RE VII Cloud version on Switch, and it doesn't support that. Warframe on Switch boots you out back to the main menu when you wake up your device after sleep, making you go through the lengthy reload and reconnection process again and again. It's a godsend when DE / Panic Button finally fixed that. Makes it a more convenient and snappy experience.
Absolutely. I already don't touch always online games.
I dont see why would you have a problem playing games offline, as you already can on desktop steam, steam on the deck will work pretty much the same, except different interface.
@@clockwork204 cloud gaming is different from normal gaming, so i dont think its possible mainly because its not your device that is running the game its another machine streaming to it, you do not expect a external server machine running your game session 24/7 while you are not even playing it right? While other people who might want to play it at that specific moment would have to wait on line because your sessiin is running? Yeah there are lines to play games via cloud, i tested it on geforce now and on xbox cloud, they probsbly have enough for daily use, but i dont think they have enough servers to keep a session for every single one client running all the time.
Man the steam deck is looking absolutely awesome, Valve is being extremely open with the system and I love it, I just hope they open the buying options to other regions :(
They will, the way to solve scalping is to sell to consumers that are most likely to buy from scalpers.
Since Major Western markets have reservations, by 2023 Steam will open to more if not all regions for sale.
That is really awesome that Valve will be checking every game themselves.
That is a huge commitment and a ton of work, but absolutely a massive help for smaller developers!
Hopefully it means what we assume it means. It'll help out the Steam store to see shovelware, etc more easily.
@@ArcticuKitsu I assume all they do is check that it meets the requirements outlined in the public steamworks documentation. I doubt they check for perceived quality, as that is subjective.
It's not though.
It's aimed to help Valve's customers to request less refunds because something just doesn't work.
Which will ease financial burden considerably, hence they are investing in it.
Sadly, just reviewing a game once isn't enough.
Crappy developers are well-known for breaking compatibility with an anti-cheat or an engine plugin lazily slapped on with another update.
@@goury My comment didn’t age well. Valve dropped the ball.
@@CoolJosh3k T_T
Not completely dropped yet, but not holding it as high as it should've been, sadly.
I hope there is verification sign in desktop version too, to create a decent library before deck come in
Sort By SteamOS + Linux, it should give you a rough idea of what works out of the box but it isnt the complete list unless valve updates it, so theres protondb for that.
Didn't they say in this or the consumer video that there were going to be icons on desktop too.
And you will have plenty of time to create a library for it, the winter sale doesn't even start until the later parts of December and ends in January so these icons will already have been released.
6:48 If you watched the video they show you it does.
@@ZambonieDude they said, that steam deck compatibility will not affect visibility on web and desktop. I understand it as there is no sign's.
Please make a Mono Audio Option in the Steam Deck options for people that cant hear on a side or has broken Headphones
this feature need the added
Valve do not forget Peru (Latin America), we also want to make the reservation. I love how the console itself looks and it would be a shame if it didn't go out to other countries. I hope to be heard, thank you. 🤚
Please make this rating available on the web version and pc version for steam so I can see the compatibility while buying on the web version
6:48 If you watched the video they tell you it does.
I am VERY happy the documentation and checklist are publc. That way Unverified games can be tested quickly by players (test volunteers, not every single customer), share feedback with the community and developers, and get the ball rolling faster on fixes and reviews. This is an exciting new form factor and OS to play games on, so having the larges game library in the world is not going to be a one company job :)
Valve's really pulling all the stops on features and addressing consumer concerns 👍
Fantastic, I really wanted this to be a thing. Thank you for doing this!
"After all it's your deck" this is the killing sentence. Usually I wait 1 or 2 years before buying a console or just even skip to the next gen, this time I will make an exception Day one for me just to make sure it will not be a flop
Yeah, i want to be part of good change
@@orlandofurioso7329 Let be part of the good change
I was expecting and hoping for something exactly like this, I’m glad to see that valve is on top of things. Steam deck is gonna be a smashing success
Great work Erick, on both videos.
This is really smart. Great job, keep it up.
This is a smart way to go about things.
This is great news for the owners of existing handheld PCs. Currently you've got to check a bunch of different things in a load of different places (specs, controller support, screenshots, etc.) to find out whether a game is going to work on a GPD or Aya, but the chances are anything that gets a green tick for the Steam Deck is going to work pretty well on them too.
Amazing how great VALVE is handling the Steam Deck, this is billions better than anything Nintendo has done for its users.
Nintendo doesn't even have Voice-chat, HECK BASIC MESSAGING
@@HiPlayerProdigy lol yep
I am so stoked
Can't wait!
This is why Valve deserves their cut, I don't want to hear any more devs whining about it being too high.
still to high for "this"
They can still whine, but considering the amazing open-soutce and consumer conscious actions ValVe is taking, they'll just look foolish and stingy, especially since ValVe offers so much Developer Contact and Advice.
The cut they ask is fairly normal as far as I understand it.
Been saying this for ages. It's not even just this. It's the community forums, reviews, advertising, recommending your game to people who might buy it, native support for mods, proton, marketshare, button mapping for controller support, steamlink, etc.
Valve does way more than just provide a platform you can sell your game on.
@@MrVampify I think everything you just described was all platform stuff but I kinda agree with what you're getting at.
I will say Valve is a bit of an odd company. They are certainly focused on profit as evidenced by the fact that the only new games and hardware made by Valve are to grow the platform. The way they seem to grow their platform doesn't usually limit competition and often enough is beneficial to them a well even if indirectly.
The fundamental motive/moral imperative for most companies is profit and Valve is no different there. It's just odd that they're not particularly evil about it. It's nice capitalism. What ever happened to Google's don't be evil sign?
that is amazing view at the glass windows
Thicc boi!
Cool video! I hope that it goes well!
I can't wait get both hands on deck
I'm not sure who the narrator is but they give a very authentic feeling to the guides
Erik.
This is so cool
thanks bro .i owe you one.
hot damn! i knew this would come one day..
When would you send devkits to developers located outside of UK and USA? We need to start testing our game ASAP
I'm a bit confused about the on screen annotation at 6:33 , it says
"Some functionality is not accessible using the default controller configuration, requiring use of the touchscreen or virtual keyboard."
But I imagine that using the touchscreen will be the best solution to control the game in certain cases.
For example sorting an inventory with touchscreen drag & drop is way better than a clunky gamepad control system, the touchscreen is a powerful addition to the control options of the Steam Deck and I don't understand why the use of it results in a compatibility warning.
I'd imagine it would only be an issue if the player HAD to use the touch screen without any other way to interface with a menu. I agree that touch controls are great for inventory, but if that was the only way to move around and interact with that menu, it could be seen as a bug or mistake.
@@ProtoDiscard Especially when you dock the system to a TV and lose the touch screen option as a result.
@@ProtoDiscard But why? It is specifically meant for the Steam Deck, and every Steam Deck has a touchscreen.
@@DaVince21 Yea, that makes some sense.
But I suppose you also lose the option of using the thumb sticks, touch pads and everything else.
@@TackerTacker Not speaking from experience, but maybe some people may want to use a different controller through bluetooth. Or it could be cumbersome to change the way you grip your hands on a device that weighs nearly a pound and a half just to navigate a menu
Great to see Death Stranding getting that verified tick TBH. One of my favourites of all time!
Norman reedus went from walking dead to just plain walking. Crap game.. was expecting much more from Hideo Kojima
I can't wait for the Deck to release even though mine is set for Q2 since I'm looking forward to dropping Windows so I can daily drive Linux on my desktop.
Well if Steam OS 3.0 for PC is the same then maybe you give dual booting a try. I've not heard of it's release date but I'm guessing we'll likely still have to wait till the Deck is released.
@@lionelt.9124 Steam os 3.0 shouldn't be that much different from any other Linux distro performance wise, that is if you are running the same kernel, same proton version and same gpu driver version.
Ух! Класні позначки. Сподіваюсь більшість ігор буде з галочкою в зеленому колі))
I wonder if we can suggest games for them to test the compatability?
So smart
Sounds good, now could you please make Steam Deck available in Australia? And I'm still waiting for the Index to be available here too :(
Good to know now I can take Death Stranding and play it on the go. Now if only I can get my hands on one of this unit...
👍👍
Seems like a good system
I hope that steam deck will come in an affordable price on Argentina, every brand new thingy that gets released costs more than half a million AR$
The deck much like the Index will probably never sell officially in the developing world other than through resellers which will scalp you either due to taxes+shipping or simply greed.
Probably won't happen
very small chance it will happen..
Look into buying via a proxy service.
I think these icons should appear in the destop client as well. As a customer I want to know how many of my games are full green, playable or unsupported BEFORE I buy the Steam Deck, and after I have it, I want to know BEFORE I buy a game for my Desktop if I'll be able to play it on Steam Deck or no like this WILL become a feature and buying decision asset in the future if I have the Steam Deck. Even with the Steam Deck, I'll be doing most of my buying via Desktop so I'd like to NOT have to power up the Deck just to check if the game I wanna buy on desktop works on the deck or not.
so is there a list of games we can look at somewhere?
How’s this going to work with games that need 3rd party software to run eg uplay ?
It usually just works perfectly fine. I can't really think of a game where the 3rd party launcher breaks the Linux compatibility.
So now what I going to do whit my OLED?
there has been leaked footage of the valve index working on a steam deck so I thought that VR games would work but half-life Alex was unsupported but does that mean that the valve index footage is just outdated and has changed or is it unsupported because you need a VR headset so play it
It's "Unsupported" because you need a VR headset, i.e. you need a peripheral that isn't included with the Steam Deck in order to play it. The Verification system is really just a way to tell you if you can play a game without doing anything cumbersome in the process, like say plugging in and setting up a VR headset. .
are these symbols everywhere, like the website, or the steam deck client version only?
I wish you did review every game's store page too. A lot of games have misinformation going on there like controller support or system requirements or DLC info.
I agree.
I have a couple of games marked as Verified that have controler bugs and should be Playable. The Verified “label” check could use more rigour it looks like 😬
Can you install or use my GamePass account on the steam deck?
Can I run game tagged as unsuppored (because it doesnt have controller support) if i connect keyboard and mouse?
Yep, as they’ve said before, it’s a gaming pc. You can do whatever the hell you want with it
How will you guys rate poor native games that sometimes crash like Splitgate for example
Playable or Unsupported depending on how bad it is
Can you play Windows games on the Steam Deck without having Windows? I heard of Proton but have no idea what it is?
this would be nice if Linux users would see the rating too on their desktops
I think they are showing games that can run on Linux already
Everyone will be able to see the rating in the Store if they choose to, at least that's what I got from the description in the docs.
ProtonDB ratings would fit more as it does not care about button mappings, controller support or anything other that just Linux support.
@@AndersHass the SteamOS + Linux section only shows games that are natively running atm.
when is the steam controller v2 coming out???
Probably never the first steam controller failed doubt they'd try another
@@Generic--User there are patents for a second Steam Controller
It would be nice if people from feedback get some reward. Because they become like testers for something new.
For example. When they feedback help a lot they get like -10%off to verify games on deck..(one time)
Can you play stadia game on there ?????
Shouldn't the unsupported rating be it's own color so that it's not confused with the unknown rating?
Agreed but considering the "unsupported" logo is distinctively different than "unknown" logo, I think it's good enough.
I think that's a design decision at play. Colours draw our eyes. If the colour was red or something, our eyes would be drawn to the unsupported games. Their goal with the green or yellow icons but grey for unsupported, is probably to draw your eyes to the verified and playable games, away from the unsupported. Plus if the colour was something like 'Red' or in some way designed to look 'negative', developers might consider that a smear against their game.
I absolutely love that boomer teddy!
Oh yes.
HOLY SHIT BIG WELD!!!!
I wonder what playing TitanFall 2 will be like on this
Can it handle skyrim better or just as good as xbox tho?
Can you play playstation now on it.
ok
not bad
Ok
Will re-reviews cost money?
What happens if we test on our Decks and inform the user outside of the Verified program?
I think that would not be a problem, but im not steam lol, hope they dont charge for it, specially if you sent them the proper documented test results that are already done and met their criteria for being verified and classified, but it would for sure be better for your game that info already on store page, since thats where the majority will look for info about it.
I think they won't charge extra for it. They already take their cut. Apple has free re-reviews of apps for App Store, even free apps.
develop natively for linux
Come again when Linux has 30% active userbase.
Please fix M1 Mac Controller/gamepad drivers.
I love how TF2 isn't verified because adding full controller compatibility would take actual effort
It was released on consoles as part of the orange box though, lol
It does have built in Steam Input support with 4 different presets depending on circumstance (menus, in-game, spectating, in-game pop-up menus like disguising), so it should still work fine for the most part. The game switches between those presets automatically. A good set of bindings may require manual setup though, the default one has some odd decisions, hopefully they take the rear buttons into account for the Deck.
@@SolarLight I'm aware, still doesn't change the fact that it isn't verified due to controller issues, even though it was released on consoles. It wouldn't even be that difficult of a fix, but whatever. It's Valve.
@@SolarLight Was just about to say this.
I have 1k+ and have played with a controller, it totally works and I think it’s gonna be nice af on deck.
Also, nice to see you here
@@evdestroy5304 The only controller issues I personally take issue with are some problems I had with Flick Stick. Sometimes when switching between the different presets (like after respawning or closing a taunt menu) you'll suddenly face in the wrong direction. I'm hoping this'll be fixed when the Steam Deck launches. Or if not, maybe tons of people will notice this bug and then it'll get fixed.
The specific issues mentioned in their compatibility check refer to things like needing to use the keyboard to type in the backpack's search bar. Can't exactly think of an elegant solution for that one. Would be nice if the menus had better controller support overall, but still, it's playable.
Hey Valve, wouldn't it be more dev friendly if you had cloud instances of the deck that every registered developer could run to test their games on their browser? I mean, even a time slot access would make a lot of sense (15mn a day). Just saying.
@@laraaleatoria Let me rephrase then, would it make sense to have cloud instances to test our games before submitting then to Valve for verification?
We devs will get a dev kit soon.

Will steam deck support Epic games natively?
That's the plan
not out of the box, it is still a STEAM Deck, it is up to Epic to support Steam Deck not Valve
Not without some changes,
It won't ever be supported natively until Epic themselves not only port their launcher to Linux, but also mandate that developers support Linux natively,
If you want to try and play games from the Epic Launcher on it anyways, you can try to set up the Heroic Launcher, but you'd need to use the CLI, which can be pretty uninviting for people who aren't familiar with it.

That's up to the developers of the games not Valve. Either make the games have native controller support or create an official controller config via Steam Input.
So much for the “plays your entire Steam library” promise.
It can play all your library but not all games play the best.
