Now We Have to WELD a Patch into the Talbot Sunbeam LOTUS!! - Cutting Out the RUST

- Work has resumed on the black Talbot Sunbeam LOTUS! In this episode we show you how to make a repair patch, how to shape it and most importantly.... how to weld it back into place.
We found a suspect hole in the lower rear quarter section and the only way to make sure it is fixed properly is to cut out the bad metal and replace it with some fresh stuff. We have made a how to guide to help you repair and fabricate a replacement section on your own car.
We don't usually get in finished cars for restoration! This Sunbeam LOTUS had a full nut and bolt restoration but all didn't go to plan in the place that did the paint. The customer brought us the car to try and fix the defects but we found a lot more problems than we thought we would........

Hi guys, now this style of video is perfect in my opinion, great job, what a pro, Lewis you make the work look effortless, brilliant instructions and advice and great work on the camera too. Whiteland restorations you knocked that one out of the park as they say.
Can't wait for your next upload.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Dane! We are playing round with a slightly different format to the video this week. Bit more of a how to vlog flavour. Hopefully they'll be of use to people looking to make their own panels! Glad you enjoyed it 👍
I found this channel after searching "Lotus Sunbeam" .. a car I used to own in 1988.
Shortly after 1988 I became a self employed motor trader and got myself an industrial unit...
I self learned how to prep and spray , and after hundreds of hours got fairly decent at it , however , Lewis is on another level !
Really enjoying every video, and the teamwork you two have is pretty special.
Keep up the great work , and If I ever have a mad moment and buy a shoddy Sunbeam Lotus again I'll know where it's gonna be sent 😉
Thank you very much for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. More Sunbeam content coming your way tomorrow.....you'd best get on the hunt for your next one! 😉
That was tricky repair with the double curve without the shrinker /stretcher it would be near impossible but you guys make it look easy ! These little how too's are worth their weight in gold !
Thanks Leslie! Yeah tricky shape to replicate but with a bit of patience and the right tools it's totally possible! We hope it can help someone who's looking to try and make their own patches 😁👍
Always instructive to see a sheet metal worker at work.
Lewis. One word. Legend! Fantastic (as usual) you guys. Regards. Mark
Thanks Mark!
That was a long 10 minutes 🤣 Loved it guys it reminded me of Blue Peter but for car folk. Great stuff
Here's one we made earlier! 😂

Glad you liked it!
Love your honesty (lies blinking 🤣)
I don't mind any change as long as you three keep being yourselves.
The honest and open way of talking about and showing how you are doing things... Just brilliant. So much craftsmanship.
That is what makes your video's enjoyable 🤎
And that's worth supporting 👍👍🏼👍🏿
Honesty is always the best policy! More how to videos on the way!
I’ve seen others do this before. However, that was the very best demonstration that I’ve seen. Thanks and please keep the videos coming.
Thanks Alistair! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Don’t care how long the videos are
Just love the content
Keep up the dedication
Glad to hear! We didn't want to cut out too much footage...
Superb job as always! I’ll watch a video of any length to be honest but I really enjoy watching the detailed ones like this. Keep up the great work you two (and a bit) ! 😃
Thanks Simon! We're going into more detail on the fiddly aspects if restoration at the mo. Something a bit different!
Old school skills from a young guy is great to see

Panel alignment special tomorrow 😁
I'll watch any format of vid 😁 some amount of work went into that piece 😎
Thanks for the feedback Ricky! Really appreciate it. Felt it was nice to show more detail on one small job than squeeze it all in
24:19 A well-deserved packet of Saucy Monster Munch for Saucy Lewis after showing those skills! 😋👍
Im new to the channel but im loving the longer vids tbh, great work from all concerned, proper wee team there
Glad to have you here Ashley! Lots of content for you to catch up on. Have you got a classic yourself?
Yeah ive been binge watching videos when i get the chance, lol, ive 3 E36 bmws a coupe a compact and a saloon, 1s perfect, 1s a daily driver & the other is in need of some tlc
Sounds good! As I'm sure you know we love a BMW here in the workshop! We're still on the hunt for a block for our e36....
Great work fantastic.
Thanks Matthew 👍
Nice how to video and great job👍💯
Thanks John! We're trying a slightly different format to the video. Was supposed to be shorter but we didn't want to cut out too much 😂
Master class 👏
Thanks John!
Super work folks, great to see all the different methods people use, really like this type of video....just a quick question, what thickness material were you using for the repair panel?
Hi Michael, we used 1mm sheet stock for the panel work. Thanks for watching!
I had to make some repairs to a steel frame after the bottoms of it were completely rotten. As it was 1/4 steel i had to ARC weld it. I used an 80 grit flap wheel to grind the welds and left lots of craters. I'm guessing i didn't completely fill the joint but the repairs are still holding up. Lots of cutting, measuring, and welding but worth it.
Nice work guys , lot of effort goes into the smallest of panels . I know what’s on my Xmas list now a shrinker stretcher and a talbot sunbeam with some holes in it 😜
Brilliant! Hope santa brings you lots of workshop toys! 🤣
Great video, did you do another one with hand tools in the end? I guess it would need editing down as it takes a lot longer but would be great to see some of the techniques used.
Going to be a rust free talbot I hope cannot wait to see it finished
Completely gone over with a fine tooth comb and all the suspect bits have been felt with! 😁
@@WhitelandRestorations felt with 🤣
Freudian slip?
Bloody autocorrect 😂😂
Good afternoon, I just found your video site. Looks very interesting. What brand and model is the vehicle lift that you have the car on? It seems very effective and handy for the work you do. Any time I can work on a lift such as this my poor old back is a lot happier. Thank you.
Hi Steve, I'll have a look and get back to you. I have no idea off the top of my head. I do know that Lewis's dad sunk it into the workshop floor for a flush fit to drive onto though. It's a very handy thing to have indeed!
Love the educational side of this, we never stop learning!
QQ...(or 2)
What are your thoughts on weld through primer?
You appeared to have access to both sides of the panel and plug welded...thoughts on plug weld vs spot weld for this situation?
Thanks for watching! In my experience weld through primer rusts through. Also spot welds need a bare metal to bare metal contact surface to get a good weld...prime conditions for rust to creep back in so I prefer to plug weld where possible.
You make it look so easy. Great video. How many hours went into making the panel and welding it in place?
Thanks Nick! Glad you enjoyed it. From start to finish about 4 hours ish? Well worth it to make sure everything is solid and rust free 👌
If you can't buy specific repair panels or just a needs a small repair you have no other choice but to make them to keep your local garage happy. Fortunately there are alot of repair pieces available for Sunbeams.
Polly stretchy thingy is way cool. If I send you my credit card can you stretch the credit limit?
Hi what thickness is the plate, and wire for the mig 0.6 or 8 🤔
I wish I'd had you guys restore the front wings from my Volvo 850. They are nearly £600 each to buy now and took it to a local welder that made an absolute mess of it for £120 and now I'm trying to bodge it and shape it with fibreglass to make it look half decent 🙄.
I'll never look at a plug weld in the same way again now! 🙈
CAD always works better with an oily thumb
It sure does! 😂
With short videos I feel cheated! a good video length is when when my legs go numb sat on the loo 🙂 I'll leave you with that thought....
😂 Thanks for that! Noted lol
