I worked for myself for 35 years as a welder/fabricator (self employed). Originally, thought I wanted to make custom knives, but having to chase the dollar, wound up always welding and fabricating up other people's dreams for them. Have built bridges and resorts and treehouse parts, frames for custom homes, zip line platforms for commercial courses, stairs: straight, curved and spiral, trailers and truck beds and hitches, tiny house frames, a whole placer wash plant at a gold mine (I used to say "I find all my gold in the greasy cracks on the bottom side of semi truck frames!"). It was always someone else's dreams, though. People would sometimes ask me to do something artistic and I'd dutifully try to bang out their dreams for them. They were their dreams, though, not mine. I have the utmost admiration and respect for Barbie and her artistic talent. Hopefully, seeing it, some of it could rub off on me. Thank you for sharing what you dream. It is beautiful and so are you. To create such beautiful things is a gift.
    God Bless You.

Thanks to you Barbie I'm trying to start my own business making things out of recycled chains and my wife and mum don't think I can make it work but being dyslexic as well gives me the drive to do it.

I just want to say, both my father and brother are dyslexic. My dad can barely read but he worked hard to provide for our family. My brother is a master electrician- he struggles every day. I know how difficult it is for you but good for you for not giving up and for pursuing something that you enjoy! Don't give up! Our parents taught us we can do anything we want if we're willing to work for it. Sending you all kinds of encouragement to keep working for what you want!

Omg...how did someone thumbs down a "humbling come-up story"??? Wth is wrong with people. The same guys that complain about their BONUS/STIMULUS CHECK, are the same guys who give bad reviews on genuinely GOOD stuff like this. ("Not enough lighting, sound quality was bad, too much talking, not enough talking".., ETC!)It always amazes me...ANYWAY, lol I see why Jody loves you. Such a good person. I can collaborate with the bum spouse n kids thing, and needing another way. Love your art too, very talented. I also do alot of Tig art, and MIG projects from homeshop. Love my welding day job too but my heart is in the art. Keep it up Barbie!

Also inspiring Women to look at jobs that “society” doesn’t feel they should do. As a business owner years ago, I was floored by young people applying for jobs with ZERO skills! Superb.. I spent 30 years as an engineer but always felt jealous of the tradesfolk who actually got to build what I designed. In my spare time I used to weld everything in sight..:). Now I love to teach people to weld, do auto mechanics and do advanced calculus for their homework. I really enjoy teaching young ladies because there are so many forces telling these gals they CAN'T do stuff.. Total BS. I have run a couple of "Women, welding workshops". To see the look on their faces when they go "Damn I actually melted steel together". So much more rewarding than algebra..:). Good for you Barbie, there really is nothing you can't do!

Great to hear your story. After 30 plus years of moving metal as a surgical instrument repairman. I retired and started doing art from watching UA-cam and also developing many own ways doing what I was watching.
Took a welding class this last semester and got the welding bug. Got some of your books and now working on getting a constant supply of steel shoes and silverware.
I love watching you work. With you story you are an inspiration to me and have passed on you name to young female teens that want to be a welder.
Question do you allow people watch you work. I am a visual learner. Hope so if not I understand. My wife always backed me and I the same for her hands down.
    I enjoy watching your videos.
    Thank you for being you.

I can't even really put into words how this is moving me forward. I was a single mom for many years, working hard and doing what needed to be done. I've recently left the medical field (the crap low-paying positions) after 16 years, because I KNOW there is more for me, and trying to figure out what I really want to do now. I was stressed, unhappy, burned out beyond belief. Then welding caught my attention, I can't even remember how, and even though I haven't moved forward yet (fear will do that), I am determined and so drawn to working with my hands and I just know in my gut I have to try this. Your story resonates so heavily with me (especially the no support), thanks for being raw and real enough to put it out there

I believe in you sister!!! Watch the video I just posted “A message to trade school students” it will give you even more inspiration to go into welding!!! Please keep me posted and let me know when you sign up for school. If you’re not already following rock the Trades follow them and Stanley Black & Decker both of those entities are giving away hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to help people go into the trades. If you need help with it email me at Barbie thewelder@gmail.com and I will see if I can help.

Most people hate their work and their lives and very few have the cajoles to start over with nothing. "The brave die once but the coward dies everyday." I worked for one of the top 30 corporations in the world as a high level manager. 65 hours a week for 30 years. One day on the way to work I realized I couldn't do it. I went back home and stared at the wall for the rest of the day. The next day was Saturday and I went to the office to pick up a few personal things - and I never went back. That was 15 years ago and these past 15 years have been the best of my life. My freedom cost me millions but money didn't give my life any meaning. I wouldn't trade what I learned about myself and art for anything. I'm glad you made through the jungle and are now doing what you were born to do. You've learned to put your heart into everything you do as NOTHING else will make you happy. YOU ARE FREE BARB!

I got chills and teard up a few times, you are truly blessed! I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 6 years ago, prior to that I was living in Northern California Humboldt County. It was there I started having medical issues, my girlfriend of 10 years kicked me out. Had to move back to Ohio where I now live. My daughter lives with her mom and had to fight 5 years for disability. I tried making jewelery out of silverware, everyone laughed, I gave up, I went on to buy a vinyl plotter and make vinyl stickers, well with MS I am easily fatigued , I also try and help my buddy in his auto mechanic shop. I took auto shop in high school. I can weld I have a Lincoln 180 mig. I like what you are doing, and might try my hand at it. I also do a little air brush painting which I think would be a good fit on these sculptures like the dragon fly. Thank you so much for everything you do, and inspiring me to try something new.👊🏻🤘🏻✌🏻😃

Barbie the Welder, I Believe in YOU!
I wanted to say I felt bad about hearing nobody believed, but my gosh! Look what it did for you! That Can Do, I'll Show Them attitude literally gives me the chills in the very best of ways. Amazing young lady! (BTW, I did the math... 24 years post divorce? Obviously you were 6 years old as a bride :-) )
I worked 25 years in Radiography. Loved it. Suddenly I was disabled and on my butt for 3 years staring at the walls. I've taken up a much milder for of metal art. I work with copper, better yet- I do it sitting on my large derriere!
I found your videos while looking for copper ideas. I've watched your video 3 times in 3 days.
Woman!!! You need to sculpt because you LOVE IT, and speak because WE NEED IT! (Feel free to use that I felt really good saying it!)

I started work as an admin assist. while learning whatever I can around the shop & my boss saw the interest. He helped me open up my mind to new career possibilities. Now I've gotten my hands on CNCs, lathes, tigging, migging, plasma cutting tools, all kinds of things I'd previously felt intimidated by for no good reason. I commented on another of your videos, then came across this heart felt video. Courage, that's the word that you used that I believe best defines what it takes to do what you've done. Courage isn't the lack of fear, it's being afraid, but still facing the challenge anyway. I became a metal sculpture after being diagnosed with terminal Stage 4b colon cancer at 50 yrs of age. My decline in health prevented me from working my regular job and we were just recovering from my wife having aggressive cancer that took 9 reconstructive surgeries and a radical bilateral masectomy. We were broke and both lost our health, all within 36 months. We found a $950 mobile home with a garage, so we sold our one and only decent older car, got a cheap one, and used the rest to move into the mobile home. Out of desperation, as an artist who can't quit, when I felt well enough to get up, I'd go outside in our little garage attached to our mobile home and put some junk together with my $24 pawn shop flux core welder. I ended up making my first sculpture that sold at a local show a year ago for $3000. Since then, I have fought this cancer, turned away the chemo , surgery, and radiation, medicate only as I really have to, and radically changed my diet and lifestyle. I'm still working several days a week, despite being told I'd probably be on palative care a year ago, dead 4 months ago, and will keep working as long as I can. I've got automated scrap metal sculptures up and down the east coast and still struggle to get myself advertised, and still struggle a lot of days to just sit down in the shop and lay out some pieces to weld together later, but I am going at it full steam with what I do have left in this failing body. Seeing your story really helps me to keep at it, I wanted you to know that. It took courage to start making these and see what people would think, even more courage to not just lay down and let myself fade away. I admire that you have that quality and are transparent enough to share your fight, and that you are thoughtful enough to take the time to encourage others who may be afraid to face their own giants. Thank you!

Great story!! I grew up outside of Boston. Destroyed my very nice life with drugs and out of a random set of circumstances I ended up staying at a spare apartment a friend had on Davis st in Elmira by 711. I remember laying in that apartment, just getting over a long hard dope sick and thinking, "man, I'm not done. I have more in me than this" . Long story short, I rebuilt and remade myself. again. I have a great job, at a great place, I race every weekend at Champion Speedway and I'm working twords getting a shop set up in florida when I leave this place. Elmira... It's a hard place, not great vibes, but a place where if you are willing to put out the effort you can start to rise to the top of the crowd pretty quick. Elmira will always have a very special place in my heart... Great hearing your story. Sorry I just spilled out a piece of mine, but I just wanted to say that Im bagging what you're scanning. Keep it up yo.

Congratulations! I learned to weld and fabricate from a woman. Then started a welding company. Doing art and forging now when able. I love your story. Keep it up and enjoy every day. I am proud of you and dont even know you personally. You are an inspiration to many! ⚒⛓🔩

Oh yeah. And by the way. The woman who taught me to weld looks just like you. She was in her late 30's and I was 19. She taught me more than just welding, if you know what I mean. 😉 Enough bout me. You are Beautiful and talented. A true Master Manipulator of Molten Metal.

Your story brought tears to my eyes. I'm a wanna be artist that never found their way. I'm 54 now n not in the greatest of health. Use to be married to a welder/fabricator n dreamed of us working together as a team to do metal art. He was too scared to take chances and I gave up. I see these traits so strong in our son. He loves to build things and is artistic. I'm sooo tryin to get him to follow that path. I hope he doesn't let fear ruin it. TY again for your words of encouragement. 💚

You are AMAZING! "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition." - Steve Jobs

Thank you so much for being real and sharing your doubts and set backs and showing that it isn't always a straight easy line we're walking but more of a bumpy long road with many side ways and set backs but even more important
To show what a true calling can do to you and you'll always have yourself and support will come in the right moments at the right time
