I Made a SCRAP METAL DOG!

- I was commissioned to create a life size Staffy (Staffordshire bull terrier) sculpture as a memorial sculpture!
I have done a few different dog scrap metal sculptures in the past and they are so much fun to create.
It has been a challenge and an honour to be given the chance to create something with such meaning.

I am a self taught scrap metal sculptor from somerset in the UK.
I use lots of different processes in my scrap metal sculptures to create the finished item the main type of welding I use is mig welding, there are some blacksmithing techniques that I regularly use along side more high tech equipment like the cnc plasma cutter.
I like to think I am able to maximise the appeal of my sculptures by using these different processes and that they result in better sculptures and with a bit of luck (and hours of learning how to edit) some good videos.
I want to say thanks to.

For their continued support with what I do.
Any enquiries about welding equipment check out aip and for cnc plasma goodness then you cant go wrong with xtreme plasma. These are both companies I have dealt with and spent my own money with so can give an honest opinion about them both.

Brilliant!
Soon faaa king kooool bruuuhhh...
Man and dog go together, thats why you gave him a stroke. He's a mate even if he's for someone else, because you put love into making him. Cheers
Donno if you gonna take this but, you could voice over when your working on that Dog. Stating your process, thoughts, etc. I think most people would enjoy that. But then again, im just a guy in a youtube comment sections. Just my Thoughts. The dog is greAt
Hi, I'm always happy to have any constructive feedback. I watch an artist called ten hundred and that's what he does, I've thought a few times how much better it is than the generic UA-cam music I use, definitely something I'm keen to give a go. I really need to get back to making some videos!!
beautiful job! Thanks for showing your process...that I especially enjoyed. You're a real talent and I look forward to future videos!
Fantastic work, the life like shape was brilliant.
A+ art and A+ video. I learned a lot. Thank you so much.
That's amazing brilliant to watch thanks.
Brilliant. Love it
He's beautiful!!
Beautiful work.
Badass!!! Pretty awesome
Great video and sculpture!! Very well done
Amazing!!! ❤❤❤❤❤ love it…
Wow, you are so good (the best)
Imagine making chainmail armor for your dog so when they finally attack us with drones our dogs can take em out!
Loved it
Omg thank you for sharing
Man, that's pretty damn amazing!
Hermoso ! Lo haré
Вау, прекрасная работа, автор вам огромное спасибо за идею за работу!!!!
I’m still in awe.
Really nice work, one to be proud of for sure 👍
Thanks 😁 all the hard work is worth it in the end.
He is back at it again!!
So good to be back doing what I love!
Awesome work😊
Hey Nick,
what a wonder dog! it’s really art work.
Keep on doing this nice work, I learned a lot off your videos.
Thank you glad you enjoyed it 😁 hopefully lots more videos to come in the new year.
Very cool
Fabulous! Thank you so much for the step by step! I need a video on building the frame of a three-dimensional piece.
I can definitely do that, hard at the moment due to the schools being closed where I am but once I'm back making videos I will do one :)
Really enjoyed your walk through. At 63 I’ve just started having a go and your video was very helpful. Just to pick your brain a bit is there any materials you don’t weld as I spotted the odd chrome vanadium spanner and some bits that look like they could be galvanized. Any help or tips for the newbie would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work.
great video really like how the Staffy turned out
Thank you! I'm over the moon with how it turned out... Not great at showing that in the video though 😂
I came from the r/blacksmith
This is a really nice work!
Thanks for sharing!
Amazing, very well done sir. Inspiration to try one myself, greetings from National City California.
Vraiment magnifique un nouvel abonné je partage .
Cool. Very cool. \o/
Great
what an excellent piece! I would be interested to better understand if you eye-balled the frame you built or what guides you may have used to build out the dog's frame. Subscribed!
I have actually just finished making an English bull terrier and filmed the process of how to scale up from a drawing and make a frame etc so in the next month or so it should be up 😁
Dude! That is absolutely stunning!! ❤️ very talented, and a fellow Brick Rat! 😎
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it.
@@ALoadOfOldScrap I'm in awe, and a little envious! 🤦 I found this video after watching your video about your air ride, as looking to do the same with my Westy high top.
We love Staffies (haven'tgot one....yet), and your sculpture was perfect!
Ah cool, with regards to the air ride mine is fitted with the kit from the polish company and I wouldn't recommend it, you might be OK if you've got a camper conversion because of the extra weight but when mine is empty it's horrible, loaded up in the back it's fine though.
@@ALoadOfOldScrap cheers for the advice mate, much appreciated!
Sorry it's took so long to reply! Only remembered when I came back here to show my other half (also a Brick Rat member) as she's had staffies in the past.
Lindo maravilhoso , qual o valor de uma peça como essa?
I all, I have wristwatch spare parts. What would I use to bind them together and bend them to make a miniature sculpture?
To bend any metal your going to need to use heat, depending on the material will decide how much heat, I'm guessing its mostly brass so a plumbers blow torch might work. As for fixing it together maybe solder would work but in all honesty it's not something I have tried much of.
Awesome work mate, what is the oil called that you use to protect your sculpture's from rust. I use ACF50 on metal parts is it similar to that?
This one was an acrylic lacquer but I recommend Owatrol oil now, they also do a varnish that can be put on after the oil. Really good stuff
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎
How do i kip the sculptur from rust..?and hat the best clear coat for sculptures?.Thankyou
I use an acrylic lacquer and I recommend people either recoat with this every now and again or with something like WD40 or I've heard bees wax is good.
How did u make the initial wireframe for the dog before u welded the outside of it
How did you make a life size guid for weelding
how long did it take you to make!! excellent work by the way
It was around 3 to 4 weeks for this one. Sometimes they go together really nicely and some times they fight you all the way, this was actually one of the easier ones I've done 😁
What gas ratio are you using for all your projects
Hey Nick, how did you come up with the actual frame work dimensions for the dog? Cheers
Hi I have another dog sculpture commission to do soon and a few people have asked this kind of thing so I will do a video to show/explain it.
Did you ever make another video for the frame? I can’t find it in your page if you did.
I am currently taking a welding class. It that a mig welder you are using? I am currently learning to stick weld with AC and DC+ or DC-
Yes it is a mig, for the vast majority of what I do the MIG welder is the best tool for the job, more refined than stick but not so much as Tig. Hope you're enjoying your class.
How many hrs is the reel time. I'm amazed
Somewhere around 70 hours if I remember correctly.
@@ALoadOfOldScrap damn you're the man bro. Keep the metal firing
Awesome video. I'm just about to invest in my first welding machine. Btw did anyone ever tell you that you look a bit like Jason Statham in certain angles?
That's great enjoy! Yes I've been told that a few times 😂
Do you have any tips on how to create the armatures? I do realise that there is a lot of skill and experience required to make something as good as this but I would love to have a go at recreating one of my pets. It seems like getting the initial shape right would be the hardest part. Did you take measurements from the actual dog and then just do it by eye or did you use some kind of software to give you exact measurements and shapes for each part?
Hi I will try and do a video explaining some these things pretty soon.
Hello, so this is MIG welding? Not brazing? I'm interested in starting up but I need to know what kind of welder to buy.
It is mig welding yes. There are two types of mig welding, flux core (gassless mig) which doesn't require gas but can produce messy welds with lots of spatter or normal mig welding which uses a shielding gas much tidier welds and less clean up after, hope that helps a little.
@@ALoadOfOldScrap this does help. thanks!
@@ALoadOfOldScrap I'm a beginner, I would love to do a piece like this, can you recommend a beginner welder? Can oxygen acetylene have the same effect /safer? Thanks!
@@dec23 oxy acetylene is definitely not safer and also more difficult it's generally used more for torch cutting or heating to bend metal these days rather than welding, also if you wanted something to heat metal so you can bend/manipulate it more then an oxygen-propane torch is perfectly fine, less volatile and cheaper (it's what I use). As a beginner mig is the way to go 100% for welding, it's what I use on pretty much every sculpture. If you are UK based try giving aip welding supplies a call and say I recommended them, they would happily go through different options to see what would work best for you.
@@ALoadOfOldScrap Thanks so much for your advice! Another welder also suggested to just get a welder just like you said. :) I def will invest in it. Initially I was soldering/flux and what was happening is my completed solders were coming apart when I would solder near them. I'm actually based in the U.S. A few ppl have recommended some stores out here for me. Thanks again for you answer! I appreciate it! Also, thanks for telling me oxy acetylene is more dangerous - I had no clue.
Only 1k views? That should be a crime
Not going to lie it's quite frustrating sometimes when you see some of the videos that get millions of views. But I guess they had small audiences at one point aswell 😁
How much for this junk?
Weak no nuts?
2 minutes Turkish....
You said it would be 2 minutes 5 minutes ago!
@@ALoadOfOldScrap Ha, glad you got it :) - Love your work man, so good.
