Yes, you need to re-watch season 1 again. Now knowing this reveal, everything makes sense again. And yes, Flint was the most feared fictional pirate. Only one other fictional pirate that others fear more than Flint that Flint himself in Treasure Island revealed that he feared, and that is Silver, but Silver has not become Long John Silver yet in season 2. For real life, Vane had a reputation for being very violent in real life, but I think Blackbeard had the bigger reputation. I loved how they weaved fiction together with non-fictional pirates in the story such that it makes you think and believe for a brief moment that maybe the fictional pirates did exist (like Flint was a real person called James McGraw) but had become myth and folklore.
This would have to be one of my favourite reactions yet from you guys! I had the same reaction myself when I watched it all those years ago! My heart really went out for James/Flint he lost everything that was dear to him Thomas, being in the navy, leaving England (or more like being forced to leave!) & ya wondered why James became Flint he was a tortured soul throughout the series!
"throw him under the boat"...I know that was intented to be a joke replacing bus with boat...but that is was Pirates actually have done called "keelhaul" you will see that action in a later episode
"There is a life in Boston [...] no war, no blood and no sacrifice..." "It requires an intolerable sacrifice" "To accept a pardon!?" "To apologize!!" "Apologize? who you will be apologizing to?" "TO ENGLAND!" [...] "They took everything from us, and then they called ME a monster. The moment I sign that pardon, the moment I ask for one, I proclaim to the world that they were right." I always come back to that conversation after this episode. It's so fucking powerful. I really do love this show and its writing.
A little embarrassing how many times I refreshed their UA-cam page waiting for this reaction. I love watching people reach this point and realize that the hints have always been there.
I was trying to stay up as late as possible to get this reaction before sleep but at 2am I couldn't anymore and went to bed just to see when I wake up that it literally was posted about 10-20 minutes after I fell asleep
Fun fact: when this show was created the writers/creator already had Flints story line. They only revealed to whole store to the actor playing Flint and actress playing Mrs. Barlow since season 1 so that they could act their scenes knowing that relationship. No other actor knew until scripts were revealed.
Yeah, u could tell from season 1 performance. There was more behind those lines. And it makes sense to reveal it to them both. This is what great directors and writers do.
For me, Flint and Barlow did and do love each other but they were only happy when Thomas was with them. They work as a three but without Thomas, whilst Flint and Barlow still love each other, its less a romantic love and more a bond formed out of shared trauma. They are reminders to each other of how much they’ve lost, so their connection isn’t a happy one, but they are also the only people that can really understand what they’ve each other have been through, so their connection is vital to them both, despite how painful it might be.
The writing is so exceptional. This is what happens when you're true to your characters. Every character on this show has their own motivation and it leads to them falling in and out of alliances in a completely organic way, full of believable tension.
Mrs. Barlow might be a reminder of Thomas, but I don't believe Flint resents her. I think he cares very much for her, he's just upset that he didn't do what he thought he should have at the time.
Flint is really angry all the time but he is also smart enough to realize that Miranda was right about there being nothing they could do to save Thomas. Flint might rage out at her from time to time but as soon as his head cools down he realizes that she is the voice of reason and is trying to curb his self destructive tendencies. The real conflict between them is that Flint is suicidal and the only thing keeping him from killing himself is the desire to punish the society that destroyed his happiness. Miranda, on the other hand, is tired of their current lifestyle and wants is jumping at a chance to try for a normal life again.
@Marcus notice the look on his face and the way he couldn't make eye contact when he said "instead i listened to you". Yeah that's basically how my aunt and uncle's body language changes when the conversation starts to move towards their failed marriage 6 years ago. But i guess it's really down to personal opinion.
I think Flint and Miranda's relationship is very complicated. They obviously both care for and love each other, but it seems like there's some resentment on both sides. Flint resents the fact that they didn't try and save Thomas while Miranda resents that Flint didn't listen to her when she warned him this would end badly if he kept pushing for the pardons. Great writing all around! I'm glad to see you guys enjoying the show so much!
I think Miranda romantically loves Flint but Flint romantically loved Thomas but Thomas non-romantically loved Miranda therefore Flint loves Miranda to an extent because Thomas did and she's his last piece of him in a way....complicated
"I think you're fighting for the sake of fighting, because it's the only state in which you can function." That right there sums up Flint's character. Who could think that a frigging pirate show would have some of the best writing in tv history?
"Who could think that a frigging pirate show would have some of the best writing in tv history?" An incredibly written pirate show, that is who would think it.
Flint definitely still cares deeply for Barlow. I think he does definitely have some underlying resentment towards her for talking him out of trying to rescue Thomas, but he still would do anything to protect her.
Bethlehem Royal Hospital was nicknamed Bethlem and the scenario within its walls gives us the English word 'bedlam' meaning riotous confusion. It's likely that Alfred Hamilton knew that putting his son in Bethlem would end in Thomas's death either through suicide (as per Guthrie's story in season 1) or through murder by the 'staff'. Flint was angry with Miranda about the book not just because she read from it to Guthrie but she actually gave it to him which means he would have read the dedication and realised the truth rather than the cover story he'd heard. Steven: "I love being shocked." Hang onto your pirate hat.
It's not just a big shock reveal, it's a big shock reveal that actually makes sense of a lot of things and makes you go "ohhh now I get it!" So well played
THE MOMENT HAS FINALLY COME! I was so excited to see your reaction to this episode and I'm so glad to know you guys liked it. It really explains a lot and puts more perspective on Flint's story and motivations. This show is a masterpiece and it's only gets better and better from now on. Can't wait for next week!
"My truest love. Know no shame." What a twist! It's great to go back and rewatch, they drop so many hints . Really adds so many layers to Flint's character
It’s criminal how badly this show was marketed and advertised when it was originally aired. I only knew about it because my favourite rum, Brinley Gold Shipwreck, was the shows only corporate sponsor.
It's one of the greatest TV shows ever produced. The sets, the costumes, the locations, the CGI...all amazing and award worthy. The writing and acting is on another level.
Got to admit I really only found out about it when I saw a that a few reactors, notably Sithfurion, were reacting to it. So when I saw that Steven and Nikki were going to react to it I got a hold of it (cough torrent cough) and now I'm watching along with them and it's a lot of fun. I watch the episode then their reaction right after. They pick out things I might have missed so it's cool.
A combination of it being on Starz, it was released during peak GoT days so completely overshadowed, the stigma of "it's just a dumb pirates show", a certain crowd dropped out especially after this episode etc.. those are my guesses
@@sboyd8312 But there are people who watch along with N&S for the first time. It would suck for them if something major from this incredible show was spoilt.
The world told Flint that he was a monster for having loved a good man, so he chose to wage war against the civilization that tore them apart from each other. Hell hath no fury like a pirate captain scorned. I do think you're being a bit harsh on Miranda though. She lost someone she loved, too, and when the choice was between keeping a promise to a lost love in trying to keep her remaining love safe, and a doomed mission to save someone already gone, she chose to keep what remained of that love alive as much as she could. Even if Flint resents her for 'abandoning' Thomas, there was precious little hope that they could've done anything.
Absolutely true. If they should harsher on is Eleanor for me she is the true selfish one. Everything she does is for personal gain only. And she ends up screwing everyone over including herself in the process.
@@deadhead8323 Let's be honest. Flint is acting out of personal gain and emotions, the same as Eleanor. She's been helping Flint all this time so I'm confused how you see one as bad and the other not. She didn't screw herself over, pirates did. I may not agree with a lot of her decisions but they were all completely valid.
I will say: Flint blames Miranda but it wasn't her fault they didn't go back. Trying to get Thomas out of Bedlam hospital in 1705 would have been next to impossible, especially if he was put in there by Lord Hamilton, who had enough political clout and money to keep Flint and Miranda from getting inside the door. It would have been a needless suicide mission that probably would have gotten everyone else committed, or - in Flint's case, very publicly put on trial and hanged for buggery, and Thomas wouldn't have wanted any of that. Flint wanted to go out in a blaze of glory, and Miranda knew better.
Yes, I don't think Flint really blames Miranda. He's just lashing out in this moment. He knows very well it would have been impossible to rescue Thomas
@@DarkPriestess1 I think a part of him might have resented her but he also knows, deep down, that he's wrongly blaming her. They needed to have this argument and say these things to each other and finally clear the air.
@@jesuschrist3150 there are no spoilers here, this is nothing that isn't explicitly revealed up through XIII or that cannot be intuited through more subtle character interactions we are shown.
Honestly, Flint's relationship with Thomas and Miranda might be my favorite television relationship of all time. Its complex, deep, tragic, well written. It's not "in your face" like all the other relationships are in the show. It's just perfect.
This show is amazing with just how complex the characters and relationships are. It's so clear from the way Flint and Miranda interact that they love each other but also feel immense pain and resentment because they each blame one another for the loss of Thomas, but they are still attached to each other because they're the only connection each of them has to their past lives. It's incredible, and as soon as it's revealed Thomas and Flint were in a relationship it all becomes instantly clear. Truly, truly amazing. I honestly don't know if I've ever seen a show with characters this compelling before or since.
I think Flint does love Miranda, in his way. There is definitely some resentment there, in amongst the shared grief, but she is also his last connection not only to Thomas, but to the person he used to be. Editing to add: Miranda is definitely not the bad guy here. If Flint had tried to rescue Thomas, he would likely have ended up on the gallows. Given how balls to the wall crazy Flint is when he thinks he can achieve something, I imagine he was well aware of the impossibility of a rescue mission too.
I don’t know where you guys got the idea about Flint killing Thomas either 😅. The show said since the beginning that they were dispelled from London due to a “scandal”. The man Flint killed on the ship was just a guy (for now).
Miranda wasn't responsible for what happened to Thomas. I've never thought Flint hates Miranda, I think he does love her as well. Maybe on a different level than he did Thomas. I wouldn't take his statement made in that emotional state and anger as meaning, he hates her. I think they had a three way relationship, emotionally. They all loved each other. Flint did kill someone on that ship...you'll find out who. All will be revealed.
I would recommend going back to 1x07 with the fight that Flint and Barlow had regarding the pardon letter. That speech he gives about apologizing to England for doing nothing wrong? That hits sooooo different with this episode as context. (Also, I would argue that he totally checks out Billy when they're trying to fix the ship. Because, honestly? If you're into men, who the hell wouldn't?) Flint and Barlow are complicated af. There's a lot of pain and resentment on both sides, but they're the only other people in each other's lives who were from before. Who *know* them. That's difficult to lose, no matter how much pain is there. I would argue that there's love, but it is wrapped in several layers of mistrust and grief over Thomas and it's difficult to feel anything past that on either side. I will also say, regarding the story about Flint hunting down the ship and killing someone, that all happened. It wasn't a story. I'd recommend going back and checking on names mentioned about who he killed and who Miranda and Flint would want dead.
Yeah, I don't think it's as simple as Flint no longer loving Miranda but it's true there's a huge amount of resentment towards her because he wanted to go out fighting to rescue Thomas and she talked him out of it. It's an EXTREMELY complicated relationship. All three of them were in love with each other but it played out differently for each one of them.
I’ve been so looking forward to this, I was refreshing the page all day lol. This is probably my favorite slow-burn reveals in TV history because no one was expecting it and yet it made so much sense. It gives a whole new meaning to the conversation in 1x7 when talking about forgiveness. It explains why Flint reacted so violently to the guy who joked about Thomas letting people screw Barlow. It shows why Flint was so angry at Barlow for reading the book to Guthrie. And in of course it explains all his motivations to the point where you don’t just understand Flint, you sympathize with him. It was so amazing watching you guys realize it and have all your questions explained. I can’t wait for the rest of the show. And I think that Flint does love Barlow, even if there is a shit ton of resentment, and there is. The show is full of complicated relationships. The way I say it, Flint cares deeply for Miranda, but he fell for Thomas, and that’s where his heart really is.
I don't think Flint told Gates anything about his relationship with Thomas. What he did know was that Flint told the crew about a prize on the "Maria Aleyne", which is the ship that they took in which afterward he was overheard telling Miranda Barlow that "They're dead". That's as far as I'll go into it because they'll explain it more, but I think you did misunderstand a key piece of info from season 1 which I can't say because now it may spoil something for later if I try to explain what you misunderstood.
Yeah because Thomas was gay, so that's why he and Miranda had the arrangement. Why she could sleep with other people. So Flint was with Thomas and Miranda seperately, but he slowly fell in love with Thomas, and flint was the love of Thomas's life.
I was waiting for you guys to watch this episode. Steven's face was priceless when the secret was revealed. No one else knew about the secret, only Miranda and Flint. Flint is pissed off at the British Empire for what they did to Thomas and is still pursuing to fulfil Thomas' dream. This is a great show. It is very well written and with great character building. Love and tragedy. Just wait, there are more "aha" moments. Keep up the great vids. Aloha
This episode was some deep writing on Black Sails. Never saw this coming but also the best story twist I've seen in many years. This show is so incredibly underrated. Nikki, "Omg get over it!" YES!!! Nikki! Such a sweet story about love.
The writers told the actor that plays Flint about this reveal prior to season 1, so if you do go back and rewatch you will see so many hints! What an incredible show!
One scene that springs to my mind from season 1 is when Barlow and Flint are having sex - and Flint is just lying in the bed doing nothing and not really into it. :P
My girlfriend who sadly never really got that invested into this show (I don't know how, it seemed like right up her alley, still bugs me) was at the same time interested in the reveal about Flint but also thought it was annoying that it was "kept a secret" for so long. Her reasoning was that sexuality should just be part of a character, and not some big mystery as if the writers were "ashamed" about it. I disagree with her when it comes to Flint that it was badly handled, but I also kind of see that she was probably onto something. From what I've heard about the behind the scenes, it seems like it was a deliberate choice not to give away Flint's true sexuality in Season 1, partly because they were possibly afraid of how people would react. And it's not hard to see why. This was a show that most likely at its premiere attracted an audience of largely male viewers, keen to see this new "badass pirate show" with blood and tits, and that's clearly the vibe the first episode gives off. And let's be honest, there are still a ton of people with either conscious or unconscious homophobia, especially when it comes to male characters. (Which is why having two women in a relationship, like Eleanor and Max, is less controversial, especially if they are attractive). And Flint isn't just a side character. He's THE lead, the main *badass pirate*, the person our audience is meant to get invested in. So revealing his sexuality up front would have no doubt driven away a big chunk of the initial audience, as they would have been turned off by the "gay SJW agenda" in the show. And I know there are people who still hated the reveal for that exact reason and likely stopped watching after this episode. But at least by having people first get invested into the show and into Flint as a complicated character before slowly unwrapping the truth, you might flip some people on the fence and have them stay, despite their inner reservations about queer men. Maybe some of them even might re-examine their own ideas and upbringing, maybe the show has taught people empathy to people instead of alienating them up front. And I kind of respect that. TL;DR: The revelation of Flint's sexuality was done in a tasteful and clever way which was probably driven by ratings and money by the producers, but was also a great show of skill from the writers. Sorry for the essay, I really love this show and this episode in particular. I really enjoy seeing your guys' reactions to it all!
That penny in the air moment at 22:04 is a new favorite Nikki reaction! Steven is right about the flashbacks, if you rewatch it's SO obvious. Almost TOO obvious! I LOVED that the writers were able to pull this one off so well
Loved your reactions, I wish you could see the smile on my face!!! I believe Flint's story truly elevates this show to another level. So much depth is added to his character and his actions. Beyond that, his story with Thomas perfectly demonstrates the historical tension between civilization and piracy (and marginalized voices). While pirates were brutal, they often held more egalitarian and democratic views, and people would become pirates to escape the abuse and tyranny found in the Navy or under a monarchy. In the same vein, during a time when homosexuality was punishable in "civilized society" by flogging, imprisonment, or worse, piracy not only tolerated it, but some crews even offered a form of same-sex civil unions. There was a social freedom to be found in piracy, outside the constraints of society. Anyway, I love this episode. I will never forget the moment we see James' name inscribed at the top of the page, and the true meaning of "Know No Shame" hits you. SO GOOD.
I was waiting for this reaction!!! I remember when my husband and I watched it !! I was literally screaming and crying!! What a story!!!! This show is so underrated is a shame!! I really love you are loving it guys!!!
It also explains why in season 1 Flint was so upset about the suggestion of accepting a pardon and instead wanted England to apologize to him, what originally seems like a statement full of arrogance is instead full of sorrow
Such an epic reaction~ One of my absolute favorite episodes in the show. I always eagerly wait for this one~ The scene that you're confused about is when Flint convinced his crew to attack that ship in season 1, promising them a lot of wealth. He lied to the crew to trick them into helping him on a personal revenge side quest for himself and Miranda. Flint DID slaughter two helpless civilians on that ship, which horrified the crew member who saw him coming out all covered in blood. BUT, the two people Flint slaughtered was Alfred Hamilton and his wife, not Thomas. Miranda found out where Thomas' father was and told Flint so he would go kill him for what he did to them and Thomas. Flint very much did a brutal murder that made members of his crew wary of him. In season 1, they say that Thomas committed suicide in Bedlam Hospital because it was a horrible place where if you weren't insane when you went in, you'd become so eventually from the bad conditions/treatments to "fix" you. I looove the relationship and complications of Flint/Thomas/Miranda. I adore that Thomas and Miranda love each other despite not being attracted to each other. You can feel their fondness for one another in how solid of a unit they are to protect one another from society. Flint and Thomas is absolutely true love and the purest love in the whole show. So sweet and GOOD. It's no wonder what a monstrous force of nature Flint became when society looked at their love and said it was wrong and was determined to destroy it. And Miranda and Flint's love is such an interesting case. Not as strong as the other two. Hardened, tested, but still there despite all the frustrations they have with each other. No one knows them better in the whole world after that than each other. No one else can understand all the pain they've suffered. It brings them together. Kind of like an anchor in a storm, the only thing keeping them from being adrift. They will protect each other like the closest of friends, but the pain and differing desires will always put a strain on what they have. She doesn't want to struggle anymore. She wants to be happy. Flint can't stop fighting. And, in episode 1, Flint said it perfectly. He's not fighting soldiers, a king, or a country. He's fighting against civilization. Pirates were often undesirables, cast out from polite society. Soldiers who chose the wrong side in a war, like Hornigold, freed slaves like men on Flint's crew, people who couldn't pay debts, lower class who were forced into crime, gay people, all sorts. Plenty of people who aren't horrible people at heart but were forced into a position to survive outside of society. Flint's main hatred is for England, society, and civilization itself. The way of the world that says loving a man meant he lost the job he worked for all his life, deserved to die, and his love deserved to die. Flint, in season 1, said he wants to build a society that is self-governed and strong enough to fight off England. A pirate's paradise where all the undesirables can live how they like. Where no one says they're wrong. In fact, history shows that pirates were quite fine with gay relationships. Even offering spouse support if their partner died. Flint is very much in favor of making pirates flourish. The issue is in figuring out how to make a whole bunch of greedy people with their own agendas actually work together towards a single goal. He wants to accomplish Thomas' goal, but away from England's control. And season 1 will drive you mad with how much Flint is trying to steer people towards this goal that benefits all, but they keep stumbling his plans because of their own personal issues with the small picture. XD I love this show's fantastic writing. So glad to see you so into the dialogue! And I love soooo many characters in this show, too. All complicated and fascinating. I'd say my favorites are Flint and Thomas. Flint is too amazing on so many levels. And Thomas may not have many scenes, but he killed it with his passion and goodness. He was so charming and kind-hearted. The last thing he asked for was for Flint and Miranda to take care of each other. Even to the very last moment, he was so kind and selfless. Absolutely the most good and pure character in the whole show. Who, by far, didn't deserve the fate his father condemned him to. Thanks for the amazing reaction. Can't wait for what comes next!
Love your reactions but you're wrong...Flint doesn't hate Barlow...not at all...they both loved the same person...they're bound together in the pain of loss...but there's zero hate between them...
On one hand, this is the episode a lot of us have been waiting for. But on the other, if you think the show is going to slow down just because it dropped a reveal, you are sorely mistaken. Season 2, full speed ahead!
I wonder if you guys are misplacing Flints anger and resentment? I didn't see him as hating Miranda. He and Miranda share a love of Thomas and he is struggling with her, even if they see different paths sometimes, to fulfill the the vision Thomas had for Nassau. I saw him deeply regretful for running away from London and not trying to storm the hospital and get Thomas out. I also see her as having just lost one man she loved and trying to save the other by running away from London. I see all of his hatred and anger focused on England even if he lashes out at her, like he did in this episode. Its worth it to go back and watch them fight in season one episode 7! She's trying to save him and he's willing to die to bring about their original dream - "This ends when I grant them my forgiveness". The dialog in this show is really something special and rare! This show should have gotten so much more recognition!! Hold on because the dialog and the writing only get better and better with each season :)
YES !!! So excited for you to get to this point !!!! You explained how this was revealed and how it fits all perfectly … the rest of the show is the same with pieces revealed and things falling into place. SO MUCH STORY STILL TO GO!!! You just wait, it gets even better if you can believe. MY TOP FAVORITE SHOW OF ALL TIME!
Mateletage (spelling?) was a practice of pirate marriage. Homosexuality certainly was a thing in the 17th and 18th century. I'm surprised a bit that it wasn't introduced into the representation of some crews.
The person flint kills in season 1 when Barlow comes on board was the father he tracks down Thomas father and butcher’s them and brings Barlow onboard to see it
Rewatching season 1 and the flashbacks once you know Flint's story is an entirely different experience. The writing and the dialogue of the show are exceptional. In a way, the show not being huge might have benefited it creatively because the network was pretty hands off and just let the writers do their thing. Random BTS tidbit, the actors who play "Miranda" and "Peter Ashe" are married in real life.
Okay, I think NOW we can all welcome you to Black Sails. I'll keep saying it because it's true; it just gets better! Also not sure if anyone has mentioned that Toby Stephens (Flint) is Dame Maggie Smith's son (Harry Potter fans know her as Prof McGonagall and she's in Downton Abbey). Love your reaction. Can't wait for you too see it all unfold!!!!!
This was the moment when I realized I was so into the drama that the action actually took a backseat for me. I mean, I signed onto this show to watch big beefy dudes beat the shit out of each other, so it's amazing that the Vane jumpscare seemed almost underwhelming, all things considered.
Flint does care about Barlow, it's just very complicated as you now know, lol. And you're only confusing one thing but that will get cleared up soon Great reaction!! So glad you guys didn't get spoiled. The writing, the dialogue.... happy you can appreciate how good it is
This episode really is something special. The depth of the storytelling and how well it's crafted is absolutely phenomenal throughout the whole show, Shakespearean at times. And we're not even halfway through yet!
This has been one of my favorite reactions to one of my favorite episodes. The reveal of his relationship with Thomas is just so damn emotional. And I love how the show handles it in such a respectful manner. It also just fits so perfectly within the frame work of the show. It's all like a very well done puzzle.
Was hoping you’d do this yesterday for the last day of pride (but couldn’t say it lol) - but pride is every day! This truly is a masterpiece of a show.
If I'm not wrong, the person Flint killed in the past was Thomas's father. Gates knew that Flint killed him, but he didn't understand why. He said to Billy that he killed Lord Hamilton because Miranda asked him to do it. Something like that. I'm not sure right now. My memory and my English is horrible 😂😂
writing and acting in this show and character development is pure gold ... its brilliant ... it's one of the most underrated show in the history of television if i dare to say ... pure hidden gem
Miranda and Flint don't hate each other. They have very complicated relationship and have been through difficult stuff but they care for each other and love each other.
Was waiting for this! I love this reveal, when I watched it I was so confused becuase with the flashbacks its obvious Thomas wouldnt go "mad" like that so what was the real cause? Brillant
Fav part was watching Nikki's enlightenment!!!! Lol. Stephen didn't get it here. But Nikki did. 💯% And her face was great when all the pieces started falling into place! The realization for both N&S, the thing that make this show so epic, is the WRITING! Because each character is so deep and layered. Suddenly the 'arrrgghh' piratey stuff goes back burner and the breadth of characters and their journeys take presidence! HAVEN'T watched y'all a long time but when I saw you did this, I'M IN, again, for this series!
God I love you guys!!!! Your reactions are the best. You point out so many things I missed or dismissed watching this as it aired! Thanks is all I can say and please keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Flint doesn't hate Ms Barlow. He loves her, he also loves Thomas just in a different way. Also him being Gay (or Bi) was more than just an embarrassment, at the time it was outlawed. If he wasn't in the military far worse would have happened to him and they likely did some awful things to people in those hospitals
And at last, welcome to The Gay Anger. I love this story sooj much. Flint resenting the idea of apologizing to England makes so much sense. And thinking about how they actually hanged men for same sex relashionships, Flint is like - fuck this and fuck them///
Good reaction guys, I love that you love the plot reveal and storytelling for this amazing show, very cool of you both. I wish they'd made a fifth season or a movie retelling the Treasure Island story we get to ... but I want to meet Toby Stephens just so I can applaud the angry bastard for his brilliant performance. Like I say, before there was the Expanse, there was Black Sails. I wonder what the next great show will be?
yes nikki.. a totally different time. but it was not just about the embarrassment or people being ashamed of their kids as Steven put it.. there were laws against that like there still is today in some countries. and they really had people committed for that. just look up the history of Alan Turing.. and that was already mid 1900s by the way.. that's a great suggestion for a movie reaction: 'The Imitation Game', in case you haven't seen it yet. It's the perfect movie now that you guys are wrapping up Band of Brothers.. you'll get to see another battleground thw war was fought
So funny to finally see the "ah-ha" moment when reactors get to this episode... I agree to your point about the series having not been as popular since it was on Starz, if this would have been on HBO it would've been a big hit I think. It only gets better and better, the writers be like you thought that was good, "hold my beer"...
Guys i'm really sorry i already edited the comment. It's been a long been a long time since i finished watching this show and i thought that this information was already revealed when the story was told the first time, when that dude that got crushed told billy about it, my bad i'm really sorry, it wasn't on purpose
I found this show in a weird way years ago... I watched season 1 and 2 and then watched later seasons as they aired. I got to say if it had not been for me just browsing and going "hmm let me see what this is about," i would have been robbed of this extraordinary piece of entertainment. I have never sunscribe to STARZ. Because of Black Sails, I was subscribed. And I stayed subscribed for a while even after it ended its run just so I could watch it repeatedly 🤣🤣🤣
For me, one of the best episodes and reveals of any show I've ever watched and raised it from a really good show I was engrossed in to a whole other level. Great reaction.
This is such a great show I watched it live and was hooked and now I have watched it again with Blindwave , Normies and several other reactors and now I'm loving it again with Nicky & Steve........I hope they make Treasure Island the famous book this was a sequel of.......Keep it going.
Finally ! I was waiting for you to get to this episode and have a disclosure on Flint's story, amazing show, amazing writing ..... enjoy the rest of this gem of a show ... and hold tight for the next episodes 😁😁
i've been waiting for this one! i love your reactions, i'm so glad you guys can see how it all fits together now! you're right- it all makes so much more sense!
This is how you write a character who just so happens to be gay. The character of flint isn’t entirely built on his sexual preference like so many other bland characters of recent memory. Instead it’s just an attribute to his character that makes him more unique during this time period.
Look up pirate marriage. In segments of society that weren't conforming to the overall society, people were not as we think they were (from watching typical period dramas)
yeah this episode is amazing... The look on your faces when the truth about Flint was released... lol priceless... All the characters are so well written... There are so many great characters, it's hard to pick just one lol but yeah, there's not many shows that hit's a home run with every character... But Black sails does it... You'll see as the show goes on... lol
What an episode!! What a story!!!

Spoilers. Butt Pirates. Flint loves the dick so much it was his motivation for everything
"There is a life in Boston [...] no war, no blood and no sacrifice..."
"It requires an intolerable sacrifice"
"To accept a pardon!?"
"To apologize!!"
"Apologize? who you will be apologizing to?"
"TO ENGLAND!" [...] "They took everything from us, and then they called ME a monster. The moment I sign that pardon, the moment I ask for one, I proclaim to the world that they were right."
I always come back to that conversation after this episode. It's so fucking powerful. I really do love this show and its writing.
Yes. one of the most revealing conversations that explains what made Captain Flint.
“This ends when I grant THEM, MY forgiveness”
Flint is SO well written
God, I love that scene so much. Insanely powerful once you know Flint's backstory.
Still give me chills
Oh yeah i read that too! So cool
He think he resents what he sees in her, but I think he knows that she did the right thing, escaping with him.
Miranda, on the other hand, is tired of their current lifestyle and wants is jumping at a chance to try for a normal life again.
hmm no there's definitely some resentment there, but he still sees her as family.
@@loveoffilm4327 Respectfully disagree there. Miranda was his first connection, I think he loved them both, none less than the other just differently.
Their relationship is so complex and interesting.
@@loveoffilm4327 Flint got with Miranda looong before he started his relationship with Thomas.
@@loveoffilm4327 Pretty clear Flint loved Miranda specially in later seasons... Not sure how anyone is getting this confused.
Some of the best writing in history, period. Forget TV. I put Black Sails writing up against anything.
@@Phizzo4real I so completely agree with you
Flint definitely still cares deeply for Barlow.
Steven: "I love being shocked."
Hang onto your pirate hat.
It's not just a big shock reveal, it's a big shock reveal that actually makes sense of a lot of things and makes you go "ohhh now I get it!"
So well played
THE MOMENT HAS FINALLY COME! I was so excited to see your reaction to this episode and I'm so glad to know you guys liked it. It really explains a lot and puts more perspective on Flint's story and motivations. This show is a masterpiece and it's only gets better and better from now on. Can't wait for next week!
"My truest love. Know no shame." What a twist! It's great to go back and rewatch, they drop so many hints . Really adds so many layers to Flint's character
Perhaps you two are starting to realise why this show, even years after it aired, still has an incredibly passionate fan base.
This show has a lot of complicated relationships and that’s the main reason why I love it so much.
Right me too !
"I don't know why this show's not more popular!" you and me both, I've been trying to figure that one out and I just can't
@@ronweber1402 Careful of spoilers in the comments mate
@@jays4402 They don’t read the comments, their moderators do and give them information. People can talk freely here.
@@sboyd8312 But there are people who watch along with N&S for the first time. It would suck for them if something major from this incredible show was spoilt.
“When you think you’ve got all the answers, I change the questions.”
Easy with the spoilers
@@jesuschrist3150 there are no spoilers here, this is nothing that isn't explicitly revealed up through XIII or that cannot be intuited through more subtle character interactions we are shown.
Honestly, Flint's relationship with Thomas and Miranda might be my favorite television relationship of all time. Its complex, deep, tragic, well written. It's not "in your face" like all the other relationships are in the show. It's just perfect.
Flint and Thomas's love might be the purest thing in this show. No bullshit, no ulterior motives or backstabbing, it just is what it is.
Everyone says once the reveal drops "it makes so much sense". That's constant testimony to brilliant writing.
I’m a little embarrassed by how much I’ve been looking forward to your reaction to this episode.
i've been waiting since episode one, completely on the edge of my seat for this one!
Hey, love your cousin Bryan, great talent
Nikki's delight at the reveal is so good.
Her “YEAH BUDDY” was so adorable!
I was waiting for that reaction for so long.
Flints words the first season "They took everything from me, and they called me a monster" has so much more meaning now that we know what happend...
If you're into men, who the hell wouldn't?)
Flint and Barlow are complicated af.
Yeah, I also totally believe Flint was checking out Billy in those shots. Seriously, how could you not?
Haha there are many subtle nods to Flint's sexuality in earlier episodes but if he was checking Billy out, that would take the cake
This is the episode where Black Sails went from amazing to GOATED.
NIKKIS REACTION TO FLINTS REVEAL MADE MY DAMN NIGHT!💕 blew my mind too when it aired❤️SO glad y’all are enjoying this show
Yeah because Thomas was gay, so that's why he and Miranda had the arrangement.
I always eagerly wait for this one~
The scene that you're confused about is when Flint convinced his crew to attack that ship in season 1, promising them a lot of wealth.
XD
I love this show's fantastic writing.
Can't wait for what comes next!
this episode is absolutely awesome. it makes the whole flint story so logical and deeper
Love your reactions but you're wrong...Flint doesn't hate Barlow...not at all...they both loved the same person...they're bound together in the pain of loss...but there's zero hate between them...
Yea he's upset with her but far from hate. He loved them in different ways but equally. I'm sure they'll figure it out soon enough.
Watching Nikki scream "that makes so much sense" in pure elation has made my day
I feel so bad for Miranda she seems so alone I get why she is pushing Flint to try and get their lives back
On one hand, this is the episode a lot of us have been waiting for. But on the other, if you think the show is going to slow down just because it dropped a reveal, you are sorely mistaken. Season 2, full speed ahead!
It is very, very rare for a show like this to tie-up all the loose ends like Black Sails does.
This explains the: 'I won't apologise!' From season 1 and makes it so much more awesome.
The actor who plays lord ash and actress who plays Miranda Barlow are married in real life
The person flint kills in season 1 when Barlow comes on board was the father he tracks down Thomas father and butcher’s them and brings Barlow onboard to see it
This episode knocked my socks off. What a tremendous show! Amazing.
Show is surprisingly LGBT friendly, and of course incredibly well written & acted
Can't wait for you too see it all unfold!!!!!
nikki being ECSTATIC made my week lmao ❤❤❤
In a very meta way, trust Vane to ruin the moment lol
This was the moment when I realized I was so into the drama that the action actually took a backseat for me. I mean, I signed onto this show to watch big beefy dudes beat the shit out of each other, so it's amazing that the Vane jumpscare seemed almost underwhelming, all things considered.
Completely in character ;-)
Flint does care about Barlow, it's just very complicated as you now know, lol. And you're only confusing one thing but that will get cleared up soon
Great reaction!! So glad you guys didn't get spoiled. The writing, the dialogue.... happy you can appreciate how good it is
the writing in this show is honestly next level, it works so well and tells this incredibly compelling story that you can't stop watching!
This show is like a modern Greek myth or something it's so good
You are so right. A lot of this story mirrors greek mythology
All of us: Happy pride everyone!
Black Sails: Stonewall was a riot
Admiral hennessy: you're like a son to me.
Also admiral hennessy: let me just ruin ur life real quick
Was hoping you’d do this yesterday for the last day of pride (but couldn’t say it lol) - but pride is every day! This truly is a masterpiece of a show.
You should definitely rewatch Flint and Miranda’s argument in 1x7; it’s put into a whole new context now
Yes! The episode when all the pieces clicked in place and I truly fell in love with this series.
Team Flint, Forever!
It was never revealed what Flint was doing on that ship in the flashback from season 1. It was just implied that whatever it was, was shady af.
he killed thomas' father
@@iseetreesofgreen3367 spoilers. The reveal of who Flint killed comes later

You guys are gonna love the upcoming story twists and turns.
writing and acting in this show and character development is pure gold ... its brilliant ... it's one of the most underrated show in the history of television if i dare to say ... pure hidden gem
Miranda and Flint don't hate each other. They have very complicated relationship and have been through difficult stuff but they care for each other and love each other.
Flint is my fav charecter of all time. Flint fights for love not money.
Was waiting for this! I love this reveal, when I watched it I was so confused becuase with the flashbacks its obvious Thomas wouldnt go "mad" like that so what was the real cause? Brillant
season 2 is in my opinion the best season of black sails! Wait for the next episodes, especially episode 9 and 10 !
I wonder what the next great show will be?
yes nikki.. a totally different time. but it was not just about the embarrassment or people being ashamed of their kids as Steven put it.. there were laws against that like there still is today in some countries. and they really had people committed for that. just look up the history of Alan Turing.. and that was already mid 1900s
by the way.. that's a great suggestion for a movie reaction: 'The Imitation Game', in case you haven't seen it yet.
Great reaction as always, one of my favorite episodes of the entire show!
Spoilers, bro.
The victim hasn't been revealed yet dude, spoilers
Guys i'm really sorry i already edited the comment. It's been a long been a long time since i finished watching this show and i thought that this information was already revealed when the story was told the first time, when that dude that got crushed told billy about it, my bad i'm really sorry, it wasn't on purpose
@@LeoAndrares All good bro! i think a lot of people make that mistake assuming the victim is already known by now
@@ljsilver1692 talking about that, do u know which episode it is revealed? I can't remember
Flint loves both Thomas and Barlowe just as barlowe loved both flint and Thomas, same thing with Thomas.
This is such a great show I watched it live and was hooked and now I have watched it again with Blindwave , Normies and several other reactors and
now I'm loving it again with Nicky & Steve........I hope they make Treasure Island the famous book this was a sequel of.......Keep it going.
He’s Bisexual, not Gay.
@@Blasto2x don’t matter.
Look up pirate marriage. In segments of society that weren't conforming to the overall society, people were not as we think they were (from watching typical period dramas)
@@beefychief3355 of course it does, he’s not gay.
@@Machiavelli2pc it’s practically the same exact thing. Bi people tend to prefer one gender over the other.
"Black sails" is so awesome...!
You might like "Frontier". Another underrated series. ☺️
yeah this episode is amazing... The look on your faces when the truth about Flint was released... lol priceless...
All the characters are so well written... There are so many great characters, it's hard to pick just one lol
but yeah, there's not many shows that hit's a home run with every character... But Black sails does it...
You'll see as the show goes on... lol
