About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.

Not only did Teulu take that Mushy sea state in her stride at 9knts, so did u both, each episode, u both get better at all aspects of Sailing, the way u work together, Becka ur Nav skills are really impressive and Zach, Teulu just does everything u want at a touch. You pair are amazing with your work ethic. When you consider sailing the boat, doing the night watches, continual maintenance and repairs then having to make the UA-cam videos. Your reward is you are living the life most people only dream about.
Becka had me getting a touch emotional as she experienced arriving - of course, I didn't let anyone see me.... Wonderful work you two! You are becoming "seasoned"....
Around the 6 minute mark, you can really see the size of the waves. Most times it does not translate well to camera, but those dips between swells are very noticeable. Great fun and great job you two. I am envious beyond measure.
Very nice video. Autopilot - as long as your electronic/hydraulic system does not account for wind direction changes and waves, you need a windvane system. That keeps your boat on course relative to wind and your sail adjustments. If your electronic/hydraulic system only does waypoint, then you still need the windvane as primary AP, not backup. In a smaller boat, the electronically controlled system can be noisy and the windvane system is not. Hydrovane is the best. These are expensive and you might be able to lay your hand on a used one, and with that even work with the company (other Ytoobers have done so).
If you want to make a great passage across the Pacific, AP is the third helmsman but you really may want a real human for journeys of 4 to 6 weeks of solitude.

When it's just the two of us onboard and the seas are a good size it would be really challenging getting someone out of the water if they weren't wearing one!
You do not have to worry about your tiller as I have never seen you do a bad repair. Not because you know it all but you keep doing it until it is right.
She handles far better now that it is fixed!

Well I'm new to the channel. Been going back and trying to catch up on old videos. I had no idea how complicated you to are. Very good job at conquering life. You to well be able do anything you set your mind to. Your video and editing is awesome . And a big boat ,will work you a little bit harder. But you do have everything you need in life for survival. A few gray hairs may set in sooner though,;-).. just kidding?.! As long as you're sailing you will stay young forever!
Overall very nice sail to the Sand Blas. I guess the weather was not as rough as you 1st expected. You saw dolphins cool that was. Caught a Mahi really good eating fish. Luckily AP gave you a pleasant ride. Like you said it's 30 + years old so maybe change to new one give the old one a little TLC use it as a spare.
Enjoy yourselves in the Bahamas and for sure you'll be meeting up with a while bunch of other You Tubers sailing the dream you are. Looking forward to next video cheers

it would be best practice to have a spare AP because of the type of cruising you plan on doing. Spares-spares-more spares!

Congrats on your passage through the Panama Canal. You are now in another hemisphere. Saw you on the canal web cam but you were partly obscured by the other yachts

New to your channel and very impressed. Your, steady as she goes, attitude is reassuring and fun to watch, you are very likeable and entertaining couple who seem to have a very good way with each other and the boat. I will be joining you as a subscriber and will go back to the beginning to get a better perspective. I love the San Blass Islands too as you guys will, I am sure. The people are warm and very friendly and the crystal clear waters are stunning. Be prepared to barter with the natives and have fun.
All that weather information! Back in the day, I did a 3 year, 40,000 mile singlehanded circumnavigation mostly in the high latitudes both north and south including the southern ocean and cape horn with only a barometer to predict the weather conditions. I had a VHF radio, but was rarely close enough to shore to get a weather forecast.
Followed Teulu through the canal today on AIS. Congratulations!
You are a good team, super photography, good info on depth below the keel, ie chart v Google. A family member is planning to do this so your video is very useful. My sailing boots have long dried out so you are super to watch.

As a new viewer to your channel, I read a newspaper article about you,I watched your journey from buying Teulu and getting her and your selfs ready for your journeys. I feel nothing but admiration and amazement at the way you have both applied your skills at all the upgrades you have made, especially the refurbishment of the rudder. The videos of you in the Caribbean were especially interesting as I have visited many of the islands and brought back memories. To protect your anchor swivel from failing due to side torque it is recommended to put six inches of chain between your swivel and the anchor using a shackle with a wired off pin. Cheers👍

Very nice video. Ketch. Two masts. You seem to always sail on the front mast, never the rear one. That may be my perception, but it seems the biggest thing "in the way" between you and the rear mast is the bimini. Also, it may be a matter of experience. But, the wisest of sailors teach that you should not sail your boat above 80% (of what it was designed and built for, and probably your own seaworthiness too). I would think that a reef to the mainsail (reduces the levered force impact of wind) that reduces sail area can be compensated by the rear sail that is less tall. Yes, it will impact the "feel" of the boat because the wind force shifts a bit aft to between the two masts.
And, have you tried to use the rear sail as wind rudder when at anchor? If the waves at the anchor location are in line with the wind, that helps a lot.
No need to answer here, but would be a nice topic in a future video.

Quick question, how are you stopping water entering the anchor locker through clam shells? All the very best to you both. It’s probably not the autopilot, more likely the way the boat is balanced…
Been watching your journey/videos for a while - great job, hats off to you both! I've a question: when running before the wind why don't you use two front sails wing-on-wing (ie put another sail on the inner forestay) rather than use the main, so that your boat is being 'pulled' down wind? (The main acts more as a 'push' when going down wind, including as the centre of effort is further aft, I've been led to believe). Perhaps worth a try one day, then video and share your thoughts?

I noticed you have an anchor swivel like mine (Lewmar?) and a similar "delta" style anchor, connected with a "D" shackle. Are you happy with that setup? I have a "bow" shackle now, but it doesn't go through my anchor roller very well so i've been looking something narrower and found some "D" shackles that might work (specifically one that has a flush allen head pin). BTW: Love your vlog!

Hi Teulu Tribe! I am curious about your outboard situation - I recall you were using an electric outboard for a while, and in this video I noticed you've still got your petrol outboard. How are you finding the use of the electric outboard, are there times when you would opt for the petrol one over the electric one? My partner and I are interested in one.... Thanks for the great vid!

Do either of you ever get sea sick? It looks very rough out there.
Every sailor gets seasick at some point. We haven't been properly sea sick since Europe.
In our part of a world (mediteranian) we call that fish LAMPUGA, how do you call it? Allso how long did it take to die and losse it's collor, Her in mediteranian they die in less then 5 min and it is diferent time in every side of the world. And I would like to make some comperesan. Thank you for answering if you'll have the time ofcourse.
You know, I cannot remember having seen Teulu underway with her mizzen sail hoisted?
We hoist it every time we have the wind on our beam or forward of the beam. It throws the balance out downwind- but you don’t see it as we sail 99% downwind

You do have to be mindful about it, but most sailors pass by Columbia with no issues!

We do use our Mizzen but only when the wind is on or ahead of our beam

You must give AP a proper name! I love how you think the AP is female. Almost everyboat I have sailed with an autopilot, it has been given a male name by the lady owner - Autopilots can only do one thing at a time, rarely listens to advice, and is dreadful at correcting mistakes. Alfred, Arthur, PedroPilot have all been common names.
Also very pleased to see your development as sailors - now you have developed sailors superstitions you have nailed it!
