Pretty much the same as you did. The situation might have been improved with a pre-agreed path of input information flow and command issuing for the raft, with the central vessel skipper being the master of what is effectively a single vessel. The problem with that is that if he/she doesn’t have either the boat handling ability, temperament, or mastery of maintaining 360deg situational awareness in order to hold that command effectively, then that doesn’t work. In the end, you made it through more or less unscathed and no-one regretted signing up for the experience. I’d call that a win on any day with a “Y” in it. I would have been doing the same as you: You have to listen to the "experts" who are in charge and when things go awry, you can only lobby for them to understand. You got that done. I grew up boating the Allegheny river and for years our family weekend was to run up river Friday between 2 and 5 locks, enjoy an island or fun spot with friends, and then run the locks back home on Sunday. Very large coal barges were in the locks with us quite often. Locks are not difficult except when you don't have the experience and the challenge is that you are always sharing the space with huge boats, so you need to think ahead about how the forces will affect you. Nice show.
They wouldn’t have liked me, I don’t suffer fools very well & it was obvious that there were plenty of them there as “employees”, who didn’t have everything they owned on a Boat , but were still willing to take “shots & guesses” at how it SHOULD be done. Like you pretty much said though, it’s all done now…
As a Merchant Marine officer, I remember the Panama Canal transit in 1974 on the US Lines container ship American Lancer. She was 69,000 net tons with a 86 ft beam and 36ft draft. Being on a small non-commercial vessel must have been terrifying, yet you both held your composure admirable, the sheer size of a commercial vessel confined to the locks is very scarry. You'll love Balboa and the Pacific weather. Keep us posted on your transit to French Polynesia. Your lasagna looked awesome, did you serve wine with the meal? Perfect transit, you both should truly be credited for not only the attempt, but the seamanship endorsed while heroic and informative as well. Thanks! Enjoy.

Serving the advisor meals is interesting but it is a great way to further a relationship with anyone especially somebody that is helping you cross the Panama canal. Kind of a bonding thing ..ish lol
Just FYI, you’re obligated to provide meals and water, but you’re right, they appreciate it when you try to give them options and decent food. Not everyone does :)

I was a little emotional when the last doors opened. Wow i just cannot imagine being there in that moment. I know on camers does not come close to the scale in which you see in person. Never fails to amaze me.
The Panama Canal has to be one of the engineering wonders of the world. It’s like the Norfolk broads x 100 in scale. Well done guys for brilliantly filming the experience. You also showed why you needed the help of line assistants to steer you through the dangers of other boats. Yeah the United States military seabees is what built that can now just about I mean they they was running it you know I'm supervising of course it causes much much money back those days
I have been through all the locks on the Mississippi River in my 16ft canoe. Not quite the same thing, but one does feel quite small when one goes down 40 ft, exits the lock and there is a set of barges motoring up to get into the lock and one has to squeeze to one side to let them pass. Good for you. Nice to see the red ensign flying out into the Pacific. (Edit: the largest lock on the Mississippi is 1200ft long and 110ft wide -366 x 34 m so the same size as the Panama Canal locks).

Hi. Things have changed over time for sure. We went through with a 48 ft ketch in 1986. All up cost $69. A $75 deposit for when the pilot did not like the food was returned to us in due course. God that made me sweat... Zach using his big voice was unexpected! Still looked beautiful going through though I'm not sure I'd want to be near some of the larger vessels in a little boat. I hated my transit through the Panama Canal. Our "Advisor" yelled constantly. Between the 2nd canal, the water shortage, and Mexico's railway plan, Panama may have some issues.

Not me... and I've seen it all before, when SV Delos did it a couple of years ago, when they completed their first Circumnavigation of the World. Given it's now a couple of months since you transited to the Pacific, you must have experiences some of the atrocious weather that part of the World has experienced since the New Year. I hope it didn't cause you too many problems, but we'll find out about that in future episodes. Glad it all turned out OK without any mishaps, despite the few hairy moments when rafting to the dock, with the Steel boat outboard of you. No doubt cause you both a few tense moments, not to mention Grey Hairs. Fair Winds. Russ.

Fabulous video you brought back so many memories. The chat at the end was really informative and interesting some changes since I did it in 1987. Back then we took our own lines and fenders but the gauge and length of the lines was preset and you had to show those to the booking office which was a taxi ride from the dinghy jetty. No marina for yachties that I can recall back then. We didn’t have an agent option either, we just turned up in Panama and waited for a slot which I think was 10 days. Many great nights were spent at the Panama sailing club. When we went through we had help from other yachties who were in the queue waiting as we had helped another boat the week before. We then got the train back to colon. We crossed in 2 days and had the same pilot each day. Who was fabulous, I don’t remember having to feed the pilot but she came bearing gifts of captains hats and cake. She was amazing. We went through with all yachts. 3 rafts in total. Our raft was just us and 1 small boat with no engine so we towed him all the way through from Atlantic to pacific. His engine failed the day before so we offered to tow which kept us out of a raft and we controlled all 4 lines. One of our friends was not so lucky, the outer boat on his raft was a 50ft rusty steel hulk off a boat whose cleats ripped off the deck going down. The raft was thrown against the lock wall and they popped a bulkhead, and very nearly sank in the lock. As captain of your vessel even with the pilot onboard you have the right to refuse. So you could have refused to tie up. If your boat sinks in the lock it is your fault not the pilot…. It was great to see the improvements made to passaging. It cost us $800 US and bribery was a thing back then. We were lucky and had an easy trip but there were plenty of horror stories. Mainly tho if you were polite and respectful you got through easily without any bad experiences. Panama was too dangerous to visit but inside the yacht club compound and on the water we were treated like kings. Check out Alan Lucas Book Cruising Australians as there was an amazing boat rescue where 14 cruising nationalities and 1 dog came together to rescue a ship wrecked sailor, refloat and tow him semi submerged 7 miles into the Panama seaway in the middle of the night so he could haul out and repair the hole in his boat. Very exciting stuff avoiding the seaway patrol boats, radio since etc to be involved with the planning and repairs whilst waiting to transit the canal was a massive involvement of cruisers. Can’t wait to do it again.

Hi guys, great video. Bought back memories. Eric is the best. We had his son with us twice. Such a lovely boy. We had a case where our engine over heated 12 nm across and had to turn back to Colon. We lost our transit fee and got fined $800 US. Eric paid the fine for us immediately after we spent 2 days on the mooring ball waiting for a place to go back down. He was waiting for us at SBM for his money. So, the next year we used him again and his son plus his mates. We have done it - what we say is 11 1/2 times (due it our over heat) and helping other boats through. We got Jose and mates again because we preferred to have people who knew what to do. Enjoy the Pacific it is a wonderful place, it will change your life. The Pacific is purple. You will see. Good Luck

I would bet that the big ship's propeller created a current who was running faster than the boats' hull speed.

Wauw, beautifull! Reminds me of the day's I went through by cargo ship. It's still one of the most beautiful experiences during sailing.

Fabulous video you brought back so many memories. The chat at the end was really informative and interesting some changes since I did it in 1987.
Back then we took our own lines and fenders but the gauge and length of the lines was preset and you had to show those to the booking office which was a taxi ride from the dinghy jetty. No marina for yachties that I can recall back then. We didn’t have an agent option either, we just turned up in Panama and waited for a slot which I think was 10 days. Many great nights were spent at the Panama sailing club. When we went through we had help from other yachties who were in the queue waiting as we had helped another boat the week before. We then got the train back to colon. We crossed in 2 days and had the same pilot each day. Who was fabulous, I don’t remember having to feed the pilot but she came bearing gifts of captains hats and cake. She was amazing. We went through with all yachts. 3 rafts in total. Our raft was just us and 1 small boat with no engine so we towed him all the way through from Atlantic to pacific. His engine failed the day before so we offered to tow which kept us out of a raft and we controlled all 4 lines.
One of our friends was not so lucky, the outer boat on his raft was a 50ft rusty steel hulk off a boat whose cleats ripped off the deck going down. The raft was thrown against the lock wall and they popped a bulkhead, and very nearly sank in the lock.
As captain of your vessel even with the pilot onboard you have the right to refuse. So you could have refused to tie up. If your boat sinks in the lock it is your fault not the pilot….
It was great to see the improvements made to passaging. It cost us $800 US and bribery was a thing back then. We were lucky and had an easy trip but there were plenty of horror stories. Mainly tho if you were polite and respectful you got through easily without any bad experiences. Panama was too dangerous to visit but inside the yacht club compound and on the water we were treated like kings.
Check out Alan Lucas Book Cruising Australians as there was an amazing boat rescue where 14 cruising nationalities and 1 dog came together to rescue a ship wrecked sailor, refloat and tow him semi submerged 7 miles into the Panama seaway in the middle of the night so he could haul out and repair the hole in his boat. Very exciting stuff avoiding the seaway patrol boats, radio since etc to be involved with the planning and repairs whilst waiting to transit the canal was a massive involvement of cruisers.

Hi guys, great video. Bought back memories. Eric is the best. We had his son with us twice. Such a lovely boy. We had a case where our engine over heated 12 nm across and had to turn back to Colon. We lost our transit fee and got fined $800 US. Eric paid the fine for us immediately after we spent 2 days on the mooring ball waiting for a place to go back down. He was waiting for us at SBM for his money. So, the next year we used him again and his son plus his mates. We have done it - what we say is 11 1/2 times (due it our over heat) and helping other boats through. We got Jose and mates again because we preferred to have people who knew what to do. Enjoy the Pacific it is a wonderful place, it will change your life. The Pacific is purple. You will see. Good Luck
