    Thanks for the nostalgia. Played C1 as a kid.

    never clicked so fast. I grew up with RTT genre. It is a shame this genre does not get as much attention as it deserves.

    I beg to differ about the driver...he is not only a driver, but an arms specialist (that's why he carries the machine gun and rifle in the first game and expansion, and molotovs, bear traps in the second game)...in the first game he was mostly an alternative to doing things quietly, a way to add replayability to the game (guns blazing)...in the second he has been granted more ways of killing axis than just his guns (since most commandos can now use enemy weapons). He is the best character for dealing with patrols because he uses gas bombs that knock them out quietly but even molotovs can kill patrols without an alarm triggering (if you get them all and nobody hears them dying)...also he adds another nuance to the tactics since he can shield other commandos with a smoke screen or slow down the enemy with a trip wire so his comrades can get away...As a kid I loved the driver, Brooklyn accent, street smarts and all together cool dude...Omitting him from Commandos 3 was a sign that the game was cutting down on options to deal with the enemy because the team doing Commandos 3 was sick of tactical rts and wanted to jump on the call of duty and medal of honor bandwagon, so they rushed C3 to make Commandos strike force.
    ...also...Natasha is a sniper in C2 and came in clutch a couple of times 😁
    In my opinion, the Sapper is least utilised in C2...if he wasn't important for the mission (eg. Use explosives to blow up this and that), tactically he has no special abilities other than being able to detect-defuse and reuse mines (but not every level has mines)...his other abilities include using the bazooka and flamethrower, useful only if you are doing the levels guns blazing...not to mention he's slow as hell so knocking out enemies tying them up and carrying them away was a very long process🤣
    What I am expecting from Origins is more of the multilayer use of the commandos where they actively compliment eachother's abilities 👍

      I didn't see the driver in such a way, but your approach does have merit, as even i appreciate the rifle he got in BtCoD(hell of a weapon). I guess this is on the count of me having almost always a more stealthy approach, and i actively dislike the machine guns firing mode. The sapper for me personally came in handy more times than the driver, as i sometimes said "screw it" and tried to blow up the entire map of possible. Although no one beats the Marine/Diver in my book.
      I am a bit worried for Origins, but will see what they are going to do with it.

      @@ltgchris693 Fins is cool, he has a great assortment of abilities/weapons, but his a one man army in C2...if he was in every map you could literally finish the game with only him 😂 ...whenever he's available I give Tiny's knife to him and just go to town on every axis on the map 😁

    As a kid I adored C1 so much, that every time my parents told me to turn off the PC, I used plastic soldiers, wooden bricks and toy tanks to recreate maps from a game on the floor and then tried to find a tactical solution to a place where I stopped, so next time in the actual game I would be prepared and able to deal with it faster. It never worked but it was fun anyway.

      I remember that as a kid, i had problems finishing the second mission. Then i lost access to that game and played the free demo of the expansion. After i finished that, BEL was no longer a problem.

      Oh i know where you're coming from. Landing on that island, on hard, requires such precise timing that it's not even funny. I even question why did they put such a difficult part right at the start of the game. A bizarre decision.

      @@ltgchris693Yeah. It's funny that my first experience with Commandos in general was in BtCoD actually. And that 1st mission was a huge pain. When I first booted it up and before I knew anything about this game, I thought like 'Ok, it looks like RTS, right? But why can't I move anyone here. Oh... I see, THESE are my guys... in a small boat in a corner. I probably should get them on the island'. And that first task was impossible for 9yo me for quite a while) Then I discovered BEL and was surprised, that it's actually a fun and approachable game. And only after beating a huge chuck of BEL I finally was able to get on that damn BtCoD island)

      @@ltgchris693 Back then my parents had an old pentium 90 mhz and 3 or 4 games at all, so putting something aside wasn't a simple option). The version of Commandos BEL that I had was actually a german localised one. I didnt speak german, so for me the game was even harder than it should be. Fun fact (or maybe not so) about the german version of Commandos BEL is that it had a different sprites for dead german soldiers. Instead of dead bodies there was a small burial with wooden cross (I think) and helmet above it. But from a gameplay perspective they still were bodies, so you could still move them. Localisers just changed the sprite. I made a small clip to show how it looked like if you're curious

    30:21 In regards to your question: You are indeed correct for exactly that reason that you have pointed out. Your knowledge of the germanic did not betray you here. And "Ein Loch" would have indeed been better to use there.

    Never played a Commandos game, but I know quite a bit about the series as a Desperados baby (plus, a new game's coming out). Great video, btw, thoroughly enjoyed it!
    Any chance you can cover the Mimimi games seeing as they've gone under (budgetary issues, I've heard)?

      I didn't know that they shut down. It seems that they closed last year. That is actually a pity, i always wanted for someone to make a tactical RTS with the "Three Musketeers",but that is probably never happening.
      Maybe these type of games don't have the mass appeal to keep a company afloat. I will look into their sale numbers and see how it looked.
      Oh, and i will at some point look at them, because i do have some things to say about these games.

    • @OnlySheStandsHere

      @@ltgchris693 Unfortunately, yeah. In their farewell letter, I remember, they said that the genre is simply "too niche" and "unsustainable". Heck, they nearly went under right after Shadow Tactics shipped in 2016; only a contract for Desperados 3 saved them. And now they really shut down after their newest Shadow Gambit game. It means that even three 96%-rated Steam games in a row is not enough to keep a studio afloat. 😢😢
      Please do! I'd love to hear your take on those games. Personally, I think Shadow Tactics is good, Desperados 3 is great, and Shadow Gambit is a bit of a disappointment.

    • @ltgchris693
      @ltgchris693  3 місяці тому

      I just saw how many copies they sold and for how much, at least on steam, and seeing that Desperados 3 made worse numbers then Shadow Tactics, came as a big surprise to me.
      I think that i might be a bit harsher to their games, the one main thing that bugged me that their games, they didn't really innovate on the formula that much and gameplay wise all these games were pretty much the same, and i think that i would love to go into much more detail about that in a future video. Say what you will about the Spellbound games,they definitely tried something new with each instalment. Although i do like the Mimimi games.

    • @OnlySheStandsHere
      @OnlySheStandsHere 3 місяці тому

      @@ltgchris693 Oh, totally. The core formula remained the same - they just tweaked the numbers and slapped on a new coat of paint (setting/characters) across all three games. I dunno why, but if I had to guess: their 96% ratings made them confident the reviews would translate into sales? Or perhaps they were scared of alienating people who'd fallen in love with their - admittedly basic - formula? Who knows...
      That said, they did try to inovate with Shadow Gambit a bit, but in my opinion, they inovated backwards. Gambit plays a lot like Robin Hood and features perhaps all the flaws you described in the RH section of your Spellbound video.
      Still, with Mimimi gone, who's gonna create more of these games? Or are we destined to have just Commandos to tide us over?

    the shortest one in the series
