How to Build a One Sheet Plywood Bookshelf
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 лип 2024
- I built this simple one sheet plywood bookshelf using a single sheet of 3/4" plywood, some 2x2 scraps and a half sheet of 1/4" plywood for the back...but the back is optional, so you can skip the 1/4" plywood if you want ;)
This project was sponsored by Build Something and came together super easily using a Kreg pocket hole jig and pocket hole screws. I filled the pocket holes using pocket hole plugs and left these shelves unfinished.
You'll have some leftover plywood to make additional shelves with OR to save for your next project. I'm sharing the free printable plans over on BuildSomething.com here:
www.buildsomething.com/plans/...
And I'm sharing more details over on the blog here:

Glad you shared. In many countries, millions can't afford basic furniture. Simple ideas could change many people's life. "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" da Vinci. Keep up the good work.
That’s so true! I’ll keep sharing the simple and the not so simple 👍 thanks so much for watching!
I’ve watched many bookshelf videos and this one convinced me I can actually do this. Thank you!
You can!! This project was very straightforward. Nothing fancy. Simple. You got this!
Same.
This is actually really close to a cubby style bookshelf I want to make for my bedroom, next to my dresser. Glad I was able to find this one, great video!
Great video and practical advice. I love the shelf pin jig!
Super sharp bookshelf! The photo at the end with you sitting on the floor reading a book is priceless :)..Thanks for sharing your projects with us.
Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate it!
OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE I NEVER THOUGHT TO USE AN OSCILATING SAW TO TRIM THE POCKET PLUGS. That's amazing. I've been doing it by hand with my crappy pull saw and it's been such a pain that I've stopped using pocket holes in visible places. Thanks for the tip!
Right?! Oscillating saws are one of those handy tools you sometimes forget about haha.
This was great. Thanks for sharing. Awesome job!
You make everything look so easy!
Thank you, but trust me, this is super easy!
Great idea for a child room for a reading corner. When I use my kreg and plug the holes I use a 3/8 dowel and cut them off like you do a lot cheaper than buying plugs just a idea. Keep up the great videos
Thank you! Yes, I’ve done that before to match wood grain with oak. It is much cheaper than using plugs 👍 but luckily, I already had a pack of these in the shop, so I just used these for convenience 😅 when I run out, I’ll grab some dowels
love this. just what i was looking for. you make it looks so quick and easy :) x
A video released on Monday? 😮 What a great surprise! At this rate, your scrap pile will be gone in no time. Thanks for the inspiration! 😃
Michael Schnoblen now that life is so...weird...I have been working on a ton of backlogged projects and videos and getting them posted. So many things!! 🙈😅
Simple is better for me. I love your tutorials because I don't have $10,000.00 worth of shop tool and weeks to spend on a project so you videos are right up my alley.
I'm getting so motivated when I watch you in action 🎬
Glad to be able to inspire you 👍
It turned out great! I really like the look of the leg assembly. Painted black it would resemble metal square tubing!
Thanks! Yes if I had finished them, I would definitely have painted the base black to look like that. Maybe next time 😉
Thank you for the video. I’m new here, always loved DIY projects but never got time. Now with lockdown and quarantines I’m finally getting on with it.
I hope I’m able to help and inspire you! Happy building!
i envy you for having those equipments 😭
Why can't everyone communicate this clearly and concisely? Everything was sped up when it should have been but still showed us the entire process. I applaud your talent for woodworking and talent for interfacing with users.
So glad to hear this feedback. Thank you and glad you enjoyed! I appreciate you watching!
I love this! I’m hoping to make shelving for my DVDs and this is exactly the guide I needed! Thanks!
Awesome to hear! It’s such a simple project 👍

Fred McIntyre thanks so much!!
Very nice - so useful1 Thank you for sharing.
Cool and simple thank you for sharing
Sam me thanks so much for watching!
I've done 3 of those to keep my daughter's toys organized. I painted them flat white; I am fixing to put plastic boxes to classify the toys by type. it looks awesome, thanks for the idea, the plans and the video
That’s awesome to hear! I’m sure your daughter loves them!
I am making this for my partner for Christmas. She loves purple so have painted it a combo of purple and white, some in blocks of colour and some stripes of colour on the sides, all good fun. Might need to grow two more arms though!!!
I bet that looks amazing with two tone colors! I’m sure she will love it! 💕
Simple and tasteful
Роман Першин thank you! It was a very simple project!
Wonderful. Thank you
Love it!
Sympa ce petit meuble bravo à bientôt salut Jeannot 🛠😉

I made it and I love it
Awesome to hear!! Glad you enjoyed it 😄
New Subscriber here, I Love This!! I am also new to building, thanks. I plan to try your plan this month. Wish me luck.
you are very good!
This would be a perfect little project for the living room, but unfortunately here in the UK, everything has shut down & we have no chance of getting sheet goods. Well done Shara & keep up the good work.
This too shall pass! Once things get back to normal, hopefully supplies will be ready for us to start building again!
Here in Russia, building materials and tools are essential goods. Thus, plywood can always be bought with delivery to the workshop.
Very nice shara..
Good job
Thanks so much!!
Very nice 👍👍
Thank you!
Please don't feel silly sharing "simple" things... People like me need simple! :) +1
thank you and you are very purrty.
Nice
Im thinking Ill use those plans to build a towel holder in my hallway. My bathroom is only 5'x7' so no room in there. Unless I put it into the actual wall. its next to my bedroom.
Sandra Moore it’s really narrow so I think that would work great in a hallway, too!
Nice book case, I plan on building one for my room for collectibles to go on, Did you buy it already sanded looks like it, You seem to have small fingers and hands and boy look at you go lol, Awesome job dear looks great as it is, Mind sharing the cost of the build with us?? Thank You
Love this video! I'm looking for something like this to hold my vinyl record collection. The shelves would need to be further apart. Could I adapt this plan?
Thank you! Yes you could modify this to fit your needs. But have you seen this vinyl record shelf? You may like this as well!

Can look simple but the legs give it a nicer look 😎
Thank you!
Very good one. I will make them for me wife also.
Ivailo Trifonov thanks so much! Happy building!
I've seen a couple of your videos and your plywood is top notch. I guess I shouldn't be buying it from the big box stores anymore.
I buy mine from Home Depot. I use PureBond birch most of the time. 👍
@@WoodshopDiaries Man, I never see plywood that nice there, even the $45 a sheet stuff is pretty ragged.
This is about $58 a sheet.
homedepot.sjv.io/9rR95
@@WoodshopDiaries Interesting. I'd have to order it here. Strange. Thanks so much though!
Hi Shara, Bobby again, Hey where do you get your edge banding and what plywood do you use? I've seen "Real Wood" banding at the box store. Curious to know if this is what you are using. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Bobby! I buy my edge banding off amazon in the 250 ft rolls. Much cheaper than the box store. I’ve linked what I use in my blog post if you want to check it out. Also, I ALMOST ALWAYS use 3/4” birch purebond plywood no matter what I’m making. It’s pricier than cheap pine plywood, but I appreciate a good, smooth, sturdy plywood so I spend the money. Again, it’s linked in the blog post if you want to check it out: www.woodshopdiaries.com/one-sheet-plywood-bookshelf/
What kind of 3/4” plywood.. birch? Sanded? Fir? I am looking for exactly that but don’t know which one it is online. Its so hard to figure out based off pics online since most stores are closed (and can’t physically look at them before ordering) looks awesome, 😁
Stephanie Martineau check my comment above 👍
How do you prevent tear out with your circular saw? I don’t have the keep guide so I sort of free handed a cut the other day and had bad tear out :/
The key to preventing tear out is to use a high tooth count blade. For plywood, use a fine finish or a specific plywood blade. Here’s what I use:
homedepot.sjv.io/Wkzb3
Aside from not being able to use pocket screws, is there any reason I couldn't use 5/8" plywood for this? I've got a huge stack of partial sheets that I can modify to fit the plans, but no 3/4".
her plans are pretty modular, you would have to adjust for the thickness when cutting for shelve and the width of the bottom sheet but other wise go for it.
Does your mother know you are using her good iron for your woodworking projects
LOL of course...... nice work again.
J Fred ha! The sacrifices we make 🤷♀️😂
Wow you’re so cute!
Thank you 😅
If i had those tools :P
I started out with a borrowed hammer and a $30 jig saw. We all start somewhere 👍
What is that tool that you use to drill the slanted holes?
www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-to-use-pocket-hole-jig/
Where did you get your ryobi track saw?
It’s not a Ryobi track saw, actually. Check out this post for details on what I’m using here:
www.woodshopdiaries.com/cut-down-plywood-sheets-with-circular-saw/
Would this be able to float? Like hanging it on a wall?
You could if you added some 3/4” plywood strips across the back to screw through. If you screwed through this 1/4” back panel, I wouldn’t trust that to hold it. Or you could use some heavy duty brackets
I have a question. it seems like it might be easier to drill the Shelf Pin Holes before assembling the bookcase carcass. Why not drill these before assembly when teh 2 sides and middle pieces are more accessible. Anyone have any thoughts?
You can do it either way. Personally, I like to assemble the shelf/cabinet first and then drill the holes as it helps me make sure the holes line up side to side. Note that in this case, if you drilled the holes in the outside and middle pieces before assembling, you’d have to remember to offset the holes on the outsides 3/4” to accommodate the bottom panel so the middle would match. Or just make sure to drill them from the top, down. If you wait until it’s assembled to drill the holes, you don’t have to worry about that. It’s just a personal preference. Either way works fine as long as you make sure the holes all line up
@@WoodshopDiaries Thanks. I hadn't considered the offset from the bottom, but that is an important point. Thanks for that heads up. Hopefully tackling this bookcase this week or weekend. Then I plan to build this as a long low bookcase to go under our double wide bedroom window for all of my wife's hardcovers and paperback books. Just will need to work out the dimensions and the cuts
What did you use in the holes to hold up the shelves?
Shelf pins
Shara, what kind of edge banding do you use for your plywood projects?
There’s a link to it in the blog post in the materials list:
www.woodshopdiaries.com/one-sheet-plywood-bookshelf/
@@WoodshopDiaries Shoot, sorry that is the one place I did not go to look. Thank you!
Can I use shelve pins instead using g plywood
This was made using plywood. Shelf pins were used to install adjustable shelves 👍
Hello! Was wondering how much do you think a bookshelf like that would cost to make? :)
Hi! Prices for material will vary greatly by location, so I recommend checking out the plans linked in the description and pricing out the materials in the materials list in your area to get the best idea of what it would cost to build 😊
Why do the diagonal screw joints on the corners? Why not just make a right angle? I've never build anything so I really don't know
I don’t understand the question. Are you referring to pocket holes? All the joints on this shelf are right angles
I never done any woodwork before . Do I have to use pocket holes😬🤦♀️ cant I use wood glue plus nails and hammer
You can use wood glue and nails, but it may not hold as much weight
Hey- was anyone able to find the video on cutting plywood sheets? I just looked through all her videos and I couldn't find it?
ua-cam.com/video/NPNZlXJ7XPc/v-deo.html
@@WoodshopDiaries oh wow, thank you so much!!!!
Nice work! Might want to be a bit more generous with the gorilla glue
Thanks!
where do i get good finish plywood for this kind of project?
I buy my hardwood plywood at Home Depot
@@WoodshopDiaries which kind do I get I go online and I see different kinds. What’s best and most straight? Also what size sheets do you recommend? Thanks!
Here is a great guide to help answer all of those questions: www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-to-choose-plywood-for-furniture-and-cabinets/
@@WoodshopDiaries THANK YOU!
Hola Shara, eres muy linda , saludos desde Chile
Good looking!.....shelf
please use glove. Beautiful project
Okay, series of dumb questions:
1. Don't you have to do a backing to prevent racking?
2. Is this strong enough for a fully loaded 8ft tall version of books?
3. What did you use as pegs for the actual shelves? (The adjustable shelves I mean)
I'm have a "library" wall and want to get away from Walmart bookshelves (which are literally held together with ducttape in some places) but know absolutely nothing about building one, so sorry for any stupid questions.
No dumb questions :)
1. No…you don’t HAVE to add a back panel. It doesn’t add some stability, but it’s not really necessary in every situation.
2. If you make this huge, I might use a beefier base to support the weight. Or make it cabinet style where the sides go all the way to the floor.
3. Shelf pins. They’re linked in the materials list in the plans here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/one-sheet-plywood-bookshelf/
Side note, if you’re looking for library plans, I have one here :)

I have zero control over that. But also note that build something has been moved to Kreg’s main website. All previous build something plans have been posted on Kregtool.com.

please make clothes rack and guive us the plan

If you had a router table, you'd be the perfect girlfriend.
I’m a wife, so I don’t guess I need a router table to be a good girlfriend. 🤷♀️ lucky me.
Hmmmm. Not got more than hand saw and a drill. Too hard
