How to Build a Modern Open Bookshelf {with Drawer!}
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 чер 2024
- I needed a project to share and decided a bookshelf would be simple enough to throw together quickly and be ready to post a new video.
But when my Instagram poll showed a 50/50 split between my two design ideas, I decided to make a series and build both bookcase designs.
In this video, I'm showing how to build an open bookshelf with drawer and I'll show how to build a cabinet style shelf in the next video. So be sure to subscribe and follow along if you aren't already.
You can check out the build plans for this modern bookcase design on my website here:

I think you are highly underestimating your self here I know it was a long time along now but I think all those extra details even the screws are a touch that maybe only you would notice but the person that does will appreciate the extra level of complexity
Terrific job!
Thank you so much!
Awesome work Shara! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks so much!
I really like the two tone color.
Thank you! It really makes it stand out, I think 😍
LOVE your Puppy Helper!!!
Thank you!! We love her BIG 💕 she’s kept me great company working alone full time...so she is a little spoiled haha
Like the Design !
Thanks so much!
Shara deserves a 100k subs this yr
You’re too kind. Thank you!
I really love the 2 tone.
Thank you so much! It was some extra work but did look really nice I think!
I love the legs part. Nicely built!
Thanks so much! Those modern legs are my favorite part too! 😍
I like the two tone look very much. BTW Cute dog!!
Thank you!! She’s my favorite coworker 💕😂
I love this!
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful bookshelf and beautiful smart lady :) i'm your fan since today.
Thank you so much! I appreciate you following along!!
Very well done. It looks great
Thanks so much for watching!
Great design 👍
Thank you!!
The two tone may have added a layer of extra work, but I think it was worth it. Almost looks like a metal and wood project. Even though you're going to rework this into the enclosed version, it definitely stands on it's own. Nice work!
Thank you so much! I agree...the two tone is a pain but really does look nice together! I appreciate your kind words!
I had the same thought re: the black parts looking like metal, which is a super cool aesthetic, I feel. This is a really great piece!
I also thought it was metal... which I don't really like (not for my house) but was surprised to learn it was wood... which is why I watched it. Amazing work!!
Nice book shelf, im a new subscriber, looking forward you future projects
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
Good job looks good and love that song listen to klove all day
Thanks so much!! We rock a little of everything out here but always love klove music 💕💕
hey that turned out pretty awesome🤩
Thank you 👍
Found your channel today, new follower, amazing work
Thank you so much for following along!! So glad you enjoy the videos!
I love the two tone because at first glance the black sides look like metal.
Haha I’m sneaky like that! I’m glad you liked it!
Simple but love it 😊👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
So glad you enjoyed the project!
Don't be so down on it. It was a very nice final result and I bet all the people who voted for that style must have loved it! Great videos. Keep them coming. 🔨🧡
I’m not down on it. I love how it turned out! It just wasn’t my vote. But I’m glad I could share it with the ones whose vote it was 👍
@@WoodshopDiaries Glad to hear it. Keep up the good work!
I loved it🍄
Thanks so much!
Simply awesome work young Lady God Bless and keep you safe I wish the best for you and yours.🌹
You’re so kind. Thank you so much!
Very cool!!👍🏾
Thank you 👍
Love the pieces you build.
That’s so kind. I appreciate that!
Great book shelf! Simple but elegant and easy for someone to build on their own.
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it!
I like this shelf and I like the 2 tone. Thanks for also making the plans available. I think I will make this shelf for my wife's office
Awesome!! So glad you enjoyed! Happy building!
Nice job you realy impress me simplicity and well made looks great.
Came out great Shara! Awesome job!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
Bonito mueble, me gusto mucho el color
Thanks so much!
Absolutely love the minimalist design. I definitely agree with Mr. Colo. The two tone looks great.
Thanks so much!! It wasn’t my too pick of the two options but it’s definitely grown on me 😍
Obsessed with this shelf... so, I’m stoked to see how you transform it! 😍
Thanks so much Sam!!
Sam, I’m glad to see I’m not the only one obsessed with her work! Of course, you’re no slouch yourself! (And also one of my favorites!)
I concur with Mike, with the fancy screws it looks like a metal and timber construction. I like it - looking forward to the next one though...
So glad you enjoyed!
amazing work, as always, God bless the work of your hands.
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Two or more colors is a painful process, but in this case I really think it was worth your effort. I look at the completed project and then try to picture it as one color in my mind. In my opinion two colors makes tons of difference and highlights your creativity and artistry. I love the legs. Imagine how dreadful this bookshelf would look with just straight legs. Thank your for sharing.
I agree the two tone does make a huge difference! I just hate painting 😂😂🙈 I’m so glad you like the project-and the legs! I’ve used those on a dog bed, bench, dresser, and dog bowl stand before and now this shelf 🙌 they’re my new go to haha. Anyway, thanks again for watching!
Great job! I actually like the screws, was the first thing I noticed. Thanks for sharing
Im glad you noticed! I felt like they just didn’t stand out as much as I thought they would. Maybe I just looked at it too long 😂
Lady that’s awesome 👏 project really like it 👍
Thanks so much!
I actually liked the darker screw heads against the black, one of the first things I noticed about the build. Details make the piece 👍🏽
I’m so glad you noticed them. They didn’t stand out as much as I had hoped, but they are a nice subtle detail!
@@WoodshopDiaries for sure! Another solid build - looking forward to the next design 👍🏽
I love those two colors together!!
Thank you so much!! Black paint and wood are my favorite combination!
That looks great! Looking forward to the alternative version.
Thumbs up and thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much!! I’m excited for the next one too as it was my favorite of the two 😅🙌
I like it!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed!
The book shelf turned out great! I really like the look of it and the colors you picked. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much!! The black and wood was a little time consuming, but worth it as the contrast looks really good I think. Thanks so much for watching!
Top demais 👊🏼👊🏼
This came out nice. I've made a similar shelf like this.
Awesome! Thank you!
I love it!
Thank you so much!
I immediately noticed the screws during the intro. I thought they looked fine. They reminded me of the first stereo rack I built where I used 2 in black drywall screws with a nickel finished washer to secure the shelves. Kinda a nice mechanical accent. You do good work.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you noticed them. I didn’t feel like they stood out as much as I’d hoped, but I’m glad I tried them for this. The little details make it 🙌
I think it looks great! I like the design and the two tone color really looks good. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks so much!! It was a pain to paint, but it did turn out nice 😅😍
Hi! I recently stumbled across your channel, immediately binge-watched everything, and subscribed. You have a wonderful eye for design. I love the level of craftsmanship you're able to achieve without a fully tricked-out shop and using easily accessible lumber. (That's me all over.) And can I also say, as a 6'3" 220 lb not-really-that-old guy, your ability to wrangle full sheets of 3/4 ply and big builds shows me I need to be working out more! And the icing on the cake is a lovely southern voice to listen to! (Also, thank you for your subtle but clear witness.)
Hi! Thank you so much for watching snd subbing! I truly appreciate your kind words and glad to have you following along! My ultimate goal is to keep things simple because few people have a “tricked out shop” like you said and I don’t want to let that discourage them from doing amazing things! Also, I didn’t realize my accent was noticeable 😅 but glad you enjoy it 😂
@@WoodshopDiaries Hey, I'm from SC... we have to stick together😊
I love this one, it's totally my style. Thanks for sharing!
So glad you love it!! Thanks for watching!
That's great 👍I love all your projects.. thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much for watching!
Well done, always appreciate you talking through error or a change you would make on the next one. You make it look easy. Thanks and keep making content.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and commentary! I try to include as much info as possible and hope it’s helpful!
I like the natural shelves and drawer front! They look really well with the open frame. This is a very nice project! I enjoy the simplicity of your designs. Hope you’re having a great weekend Shara!
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed the video and design! Hope you’re having a great weekend as well!
Looks Great!
Thank you so much! 💕💕
Shara, I enjoy the builds very much, love that they are simply and basic yet have a real element of design. In the final veiw of the bookcase I think the screw fastners add a nice subtle detail that speaks to it's construction. I wouldn't change that. Also the two tone effect for the case is spot on. You do a great job of turning construction grade lumber into furniture for your liviing room!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words and so glad you enjoyed the build!! 💕
@@WoodshopDiaries Agreed, the screws enhance the slightly metallic/industrial look. I can see how cheaper regular screws might nice too, with the painting.
Awesome
Thank you 👍
Very much like all the projects you share with us !! But I am still hoping you would do some sort of under bed storage shelving or drawers . That would be a great help … never have enough storage ! Lol
I’ve had under bed storage on my rondo list for two years 🙈😂😂 one day I’ll get to it!! I need to brainstorm some ideas...eventually 😅😅
I’m totally building this. Looks great!
Awesome! Happy building!
Beautiful work, Shara! Really well done! 😃
Looks fantastic this way! But I'm looking forward to see the other version as well! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! (Dogs, cats, whatever... Included as well!) 🖖😊
Thank you!! Of the two, the other style is my favorite. I hope it turns out as well 😅🤞 hope you have a great weekend!
Complimenti !!!
Thank you 👍
Nice! :)
Thank you!
Another great pocket hole build Shara! 👍
Thanks so much!
@@WoodshopDiaries hahah yeah sorry but I really enjoy using pocket holes 😂😂 and I really liked this build 👍
I’m sorry I took that wrong 😅 I do as well! Simple and quick so you can move on to the next build 🙌😉
@@WoodshopDiaries Exactly! All good mate, I look forward to the next video!
New subscriber here... 2tone I think was a good move n it looks pretty classy ... I watch at breaks n lunch at work cant wait to see the next build at lunch
Thanks so much!! So glad you enjoyed the projects!!
Encore une belle réalisation bravo à bientôt salut Jeannot 🛠😉
Thank you so much!
Excelentes todos tus trabajos, me gusta mucho tu actitud!!
Thank you so much!!
Awesome work! Can't wait to see the next one. Not a fan of what's trendy myself but enjoyed watching the build process
I’m with you...I feel like this one is more “trendy”, which is fine and looks great. But the cabinet style design will be more “classic” and fit most any style. Hoping it turns out well when I’m finished with it 😅
@@WoodshopDiaries I'm sure it will be phenomenal!
I've recently come across your channel, so far I've seen your kitchen, your sisters kitchen and all the furniture you made for your dad, all of which I've loved.
I I've the style of your bookshelf, especially the contrasting black framework.
The only thing that lets it down for me is the screws you can see on the face of the framework.
Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more and have subscribed, as your now one of my favourite you tuber's.
Thank you so much for checking out my projects! I appreciate you following along! The screws showing here were intended to be a design element. Probably not everyone's style, but it was intentional--just a lot of extra work haha.
Parabéns Shara!!!
Thank you 👍
I like the two tone look a lot and despite me voting for the closed in one I really do like this. I think it would work well in a gallery or a shop/store/showroom where you want to minimise light being blocked out.
I agree...my vote was for the other one, but this one is growing on me--I think it turned out better than I imagined in my head. This would be perfect for displays and store fronts!
Me encanta!
Thank you!
What an amazing channel. Thanks for creating. :)
Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate it!
Hi Shara, I really love your woodwork ☺️
Thanks so much!
Open sides are nice . It lets in more light to show off the items on the shelves.
Yes! Very true
Parabéns Shara!
Sou brasileiro e adoro seu canal.
Thanks so much for watching!!
As always, this was a great build. You mentioned how you would have gone with different screws, but I like the screws you used. I initially thought you had built a metal frame and attached wooden shelves for the build. I also really like the color offset between black frame and stained wood. The entire shelf project looks industrial and it looks amazing.
Thank you! I do think the screws looked nice...I just wasn’t a fan of the extra work to keep paint off haha. I’m just impatient 🙈 so glad you enjoyed the build! Thanks so much for watching!
Parabéns muito bom seus trabalhos
Thank you 👍
Like the design! Well on this one I prefer open shelve design then the cabinet. This will look good in small places as it doesn't look bulky. Don't take me wrong both design are good its just my personal choice. Thanks for sharing.
Hey no offense taken here. It was almost a 50/50 split on the design so I know half the people prefer this over the other haha. This ones growing on me the more I look at it though 😍
well, I suppose "to each his own", this design over the closed bookshelf is so much better in my opinion, it feel elegant and classy whilst (again in my opinion) the enclosed one feels rigid and constraint. Granted the open one would need more constant dusting/ cleaning from my experience , but I would choose this over the other anytime. Very nice (for both designs) !
Everyone has a preference! I really like how this turned out (as I suppose about 50% of others did as well based on my poll 😂) but I feel like it’s kind of trendy and may eventually “go out of style”. The closed version is more classic and would fit multiple styles if your home wasn’t exactly “modern” themed. But, they both look and function fine. I’m happy to share both to fit both preferences. 😅😅
Nice
Thank you!
😍 🤩 😍 🤩 😍 🤩
Where do you get those great designs? They are really good. The special screws are great.
Thank you! I designed this myself! 😅
It looks amazing! The black paint really looks like metal! May I ask you which brand and color that paint is?
6:00 mark...
Is "drug" the past participle/past tense of drag?
*5 minutes of googling later*
Well, the more you know!
Despite voting for the closed look, this looks much nicer than I pictured from the drawings. I'm not saying that I've changed my mind, but I'll let you know next week. Haha.
Thank you for sharing your builds and processes with us!
Haha the more you know! I’m with you...I voted closed too but the more I look at this design, the more I like it! We will see next week 🙌😅
Thanks so much for watching!
I personally like the expensive screws. It makes it look like the frame is metal.
Gostei
👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
Hi Shara, really enjoy your channel. I'm a beginner and have begun slowly building pieces for my family and others using barn wood, mostly pine.
Have you ever considered making furniture out of hard woods?
Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks for following along. I make some of my furniture from hardwoods but in my area, selection is limited so I don’t have a lot available to buy. I also try to build things out of what’s readily available in all areas so my followers can easily copy the plans.
But I’ve built with oak and walnut on some pieces in the past. And poplar...which sign a hardwood but is harder than pine.
You mentioned that you wouldn't use the screws on the frame because of the difficulties. What would you recommend as an alternative? Pocket screws perhaps?
Open shelves are easier and lighter to carry up and down stairs as you move your kids!
Where did you get your bicycle book ends? Great bookshelf!
Thanks so much! I got them from Pier1 like eight years ago 😅😅
All though they're both very nice looking,
( You did a really good job on them both ! )
I actually happen like this open bookshelf more so than the other one..,
Soo, Why would you want to destroy it ?
( But that's just me... )
I honestly don’t need a bookshelf and don’t have room for one, so I’m going to break this one down and reuse the parts to build the other style next week. I’m going to reuse as much wood as I can because I am only building them to make videos. I can’t keep them and wood is expensive 😂
👍
Do you use a jointer/planer to straighten the 2x4s before running them through the table saw
I don’t have a jointer but I sometimes use the planer before the table saw. I didn’t in this case, though.
Love this! What was the total cost for this project?
Thank you! I used quite a bit of scrap wood, so it’s hard to say. Around $125 if you had to buy the lumber outright I think.
👍👍👍👌
is the wood base sturdy enough to not be flimsy and have the capability of heavy load?
It’s currently being used as a bookshelf with several books, so yes, it’s capable of carrying a heavy load
Do you have any tips for staining plywood? I hear it can be tricky? Thanks!
Hi! Honestly, I don’t really have any tips. I stain plywood just like I stain anything else…sand to 220 and use an old T-shirt to wipe it on. Some people use prestain, but I’ve never used it. If you sand it all consistently…as in sand the entire surface to the same grit, and evenly wipe on the stain, I’ve found it’s always turned out pretty good. Now, that’s using cabinet grade hardwood ply-like birch, oak, maple. I don’t use anything else to build my projects with as far as plywood goes.
@@WoodshopDiaries thank you! That makes me feel more at ease. I’m so worried about ruining something I worked so hard on 😅 you would sand it manually right? Not with a powered sander?
I almost always use an ortibal sander. Just don’t sand it aggressively. But you can use a power sander on plywood with 220 grit just fine.
hi, what colour did you use for painting?
I’m so sorry I don’t remember exactly. I believe it was Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams
Hey, you know this screws you used. how is it that the wood does not spin? Because you only used one on each side?
The screws hold them pretty tight so they’re really hard to spin. But the glue helps keep them in place as well 👍
Muy bonito y practico solo que ese sistema de tornillos en diagonal no es mucho de mi gusto yo no uso ese sistema
