Love your comment. How would he hear the sound before a ball that is traveling so much faster than the speed of sound har orbited the Earth without burning up or being misdirected by friction from air, rain, MOUNTAINS at one point, etc. Even if the ball was protected by a material that resists friction, this is beyond impossible in low orbit. The entire scene almost lost me to the show. Yep, I know they fly and have super human strength. They still have to work within the laws of physics.

It probably was the sound of the sonic boom itself.Normally when something breaks the sound barrier,it crushes the sound waves in front of it,creating a deafening noise, which is what causes the funnel shape in front of the object as the sound waves displace the air around it,in a way similar to how high frequencies of sound can shatter glass.👍🏻

Really subtle what the show did there; on the surface, this is just a super-powered dad and his son playing catch...by literally throwing the ball across the entire world.
When Mark throws it, it shows just how _careless_ of a situation it actually is - the shots focus on a ball as it passes right next to a plane, over the skyline of a city and actually breaks through the top of a mountain...If any other circumstances happened, the ball would've struck the plane, crashed through a building and caused an avalanche.
The show was planting the seeds that these super-powered beings are being awfully cavalier with not only their powers, but people's lives.

@@Mrpersonman0 It's interpretive. Nolan's speech is clearly meant to have a different meaning on a rewatch, talking about doing things Mark doesn't *want* to do, but apparently needing to anyway. This speech was even called back to when Nolan admits the truth of Viltrum and his mission, pointing out things they "have" to do.
As such, it's not a leap to say the scene does the same with the game itself. We see the ball nearly hit a plane, cruise right past skyscrapers, and most notably impact the mountain, spraying snow and ice on mountaineers, causing them to curl together for safety. Yeah, on a first watch it can clearly indicate scale and grandeur of their powers, but with future context, it's impossible to watch this without acknowledging scenes like the Subway, of Nolan forcing Mark to acknowledge the physical differences between them and humanity.

      1. It shouldn't even be possible for that ball to travel at this speed because it would most likely tear apart just by the sheer force aplied to it by the trow and if it were to survive (somehow) it would burst upon the impact.
      2. He trew it pretty blindly so im surprised the ball didn't hit a mountain or something
      3. Those gloves (even the ball lol) should explode from the energy given to them by the ball hitting them, just a ball that is traveling at the speed of sound can tear a hole in them.

Omni man shows no effort in throwing or catching the ball, his body doesn't move an inch. But Mark has to put energy into chucking the ball, and visibly moves when catching it. Just like the final fight. It shows who visibly struggles and who's stronger between the two Viltrumites.

This is impossible due to physics, even if the ball was indestructible, because the speed the ball is going is faster than escape velocity, meaning it would leave the atmosphere. The earth is round, so throwing it that fast parallel to where you’re standing at that speed would send it out of the atmosphere. It’s basic physics. If he threw it slower, it wouldn’t make it all the way around. Basically, there is no speed at which you could throw an indestructible ball at that height and it would make it all the way around the earth.

The Earth's circumference (this figure is probably measured from the ground and not from the height that they're at) is 24,901.461 mi (40,075.017 km), traveled in about 17.9 seconds from Nolan's first throw in this video (I just used a stopwatch for this, so it may not be the MOST accurate thing in the world lol). That's about 1,391.143 mi/s (2,238.828 km/s).
Escape velocity is 6.959 mi/s (11.2 km/s), measured from 124.274 mi (200 km) up in the sky. The lower you are to the ground, the higher the escape velocity will be, but I don't really know how high up these guys are.
I honestly don't think that makes TOO much of a difference here though, because this ball is travelling at 0.007% the speed of _light,_ so, without actually bothering to plug it into the actual formula for finding escape velocity when -I'm not well-versed enough in math or physics to know how to work with the Gravitational Constant and- I don't know what height they're at, I'm just gonna _assume_ that _"THIS BALL IS LONG GONE, JUST LIKE-A THE EX-GIRLFRIEND WHO. WILL. NEVER! RETURN!!!"_
Sorry I'm too much of an uneducated idiot to be _actually_ helpful here with a solid number answer for you, but you definitely did give me something to research on and do for the past hour, so props for that! But yeah, if you can orbit the planet in less than 20 seconds, there is no way in _Hell_ you're staying in orbit. For added reference, light speed would enable you to orbit the Earth 7 times a second.

I did the math. For the ball to have traveled the entire diameter of the earth in 18 seconds the ball had to be thrown at 440.35 mps (708.68 km/s) which is 1545260 mph (2550683.34 km/h) or 2066 times the speed of sound.

The subtle tells of power here, Mark reacts to the sound of the ball before we as the audience can even hear it. By a few seconds.
