Ben, So sorry for the loss of the beautiful red terror. You are making a good choice on getting rid of the red terror. He’s very pretty but way too aggressive and doesn’t play nice. I love the idea of you making it a discus tank. Discus actually need warmer than 80 degrees they have to be in min 82 to 84 degrees from what I have read. Good luck with them they can be very finicky and very fragile. I appreciate the honesty about the mistakes that happen and the transparency. We all learn from each other on this channel. We are going through high winds and fires in SoCal. I lost power on Monday night due to high winds. It was off for well over 30 hours and luckily I had backup air pumps for all my tanks. When the power came back on I lost two heaters as well. One was brand new only a month and a half old. I am found an Amazon return on one of them the other I have to eat the cost. The heater is over two years old but still. I have two new heaters coming from AQQA. They have digital displays and the heat controllers. They have prevention from over heat and shut off if water gets too low. They are nice heaters. I am going to test them out and see how they do and if I like them. Luckily I have spare heaters for all my tanks or I would be SOL. Always good to have backups like you preach about.
Man ben im sorry to hear this and i kinda thought this might happen. Im glad you decided to go with discus i know you will enjoy them there beautiful fish. Thanks for sharing
Aww man…So Sorry for the loss Ben 💔 What we need to remember is we put these fish in the situations they are in, definitely can’t fault the bigger Red Terror. Just a heads up I keep my discus at about 84 degrees for many years now. Many people have different takes on the temperature for them but I’ve tried them at lower temps and it just never works for me.
I know the feeling ..I had 8 rusty mbuna I was growing out... Fed them one evening ,the next day after work went down to check on them and 3 of them were dead... Not sure which fish was the culprit, but still a punch to my gut.. Terrible feeling,I hate losing fish..
Good idea Ben my discus are in a 75 gallon they are large and thriving they had been in there for three years now they were small when I got them and grew out there
Oh Ben, I'm so very sorry that this happened to you and your beautiful fish...😢 It's nice that you are transparent about what happened and hopefully spare someone else from a tragedy. I appreciate you! ❤
Don't blame you Ben, poor female wanted some company and she didn't know Dahmer was her roommate. I currently have a Gulper Catfish that made friends with his food and onl ly eats ground shrimp so I don't know man these fish are something.
Hygger makes awesome products. Really sorry to hear about your fish. He will go to a good home I’m sure! You’re a great fish keeper and doing the right thing. Love watching your content!
It does suck when something like that happens, I had two Oscars and two Green Terrors that got along for about four years until I woke up one morning and the big male GT was floating around the tank and then two months later the larger female Oscar was doing the same thing, both seemed fine the nights before but…. I ended up rehoming all the fish and rescaped the tank for Paeacocks and Haps, after awhile change is good and I look for the positive in all situations.
I had two red head tapajos pair up in my 300 gallon community tank, so i thought I'd put them in a 55 gallon by themselves to save the babies. A few days later the female was hiding behind the filter to escape the male and i barely got her out in time. I am looking forward to the discus project, i have been waiting for you to get that project to see how it goes so i can do it also.
So sorry for your loss 😢 I know the feeling 😮 I just wish I have your courage in handling this pain… RESPECT ✊ AWAITING to see your new venture with the Discus soon 🙏
Sorry for the loss ben. I had a loss yesterday. After i did a water 💦 change. One of my peacocks started acting erratically burying his face in gravel. 🐟. All the other fish are fine. But he passed. 🥲. Very odd tht all the fish were fine except him. I added dechlorinator and. Temperature matched as close as possible.
Oh Ben, that's real sad news to hear. I wonder why she was so determined to get to him. Suppose thats for her to know only and it's a real shame to end like this. As you say , we all know they are highly aggressive fish, and when a fight ensues, a little glass box gives little if any room to flee. Gutted for you Ben, but there really is no guarantee this wouldn't of happened when you were not around months down the line.
Terror by name... I remember many years ago having a Royal Panaque pleco. They were very rare in Ireland at the time. I had him for about a year and he was a real character. The minute the lights went out he would appear like a puppy for some cucumber, zucchini or algae tab. I would leave them for him in the same spot each evening. He was quite happy for me to watch him chomping and flying around the tank. Anyway I had some sort of chemical that had to be added to the tank (not the filter). So I put it in some stocking hose. It was a slow release product so was to be left in the tank for a couple of weeks. I went away for the weekend and on my return found the Royal dead. He had got tangled in the loose bit of stocking by the knot. It was a bit of a freak accident but at the end of the day was my fault. And must have been a slow death. Anyway I felt shit about it. Still bugs me a little now. 😊
Sorry to hear you lost the female. Amazing how she got under the divider on the other side. That big guy needs to be a lone show fish or in a tank with similar type rough fish i guess. I think making the 55 into a discus tank is a good idea. I got into discus over a year ago and love them. They are beautiful fish. I think in the end you will be very happy and will really enjoy them.
Very sad times Ben gutted when you lose them. I lost two last week that appeared fine the day before all the other fish are fine,it can be very frustrating at times
Sorry you went through this. I had the same happen with my cuban pair with a divider. My female cuban was able to get through the divider into the males side and the male destroyed her and I tried to get her back to good health and she was too wounded and infections spread rapidly on her body and she passed a week later.
Hi Ben. I just saw your video and heard u will install a 1000watt heater yo maintain correct temperature for discus. Pllllzzz. Don't do that. I've seen so many done this and the heater hang and the water will get over 100 in few hours. I strongly recommend to use 2 pics of 250 watts at maximum. With this u don't risk ur fish get boiled . Keep up the good work. / From a Swedish fan ❤
I have 6 embers and 6 glow lites in a 10 gallon. The embers can get competitive and fight for dominance but the glow lites are so sweet. The most important issue with these fish is over feeding them. They are aggressive eaters. NWF
Ben I have a 220-gallon tank and I have the same exact heater, don't trust the controller on the heater. I have an Inknird back up on mine now cause the first one I had malfunctioned after about three months, and killed all my fish. Hyger gave me a new heater but didn't cover the 30 fish I had in there.
So sorry for your loss. But I guess he was just doing what his species does naturally. Still very sad. Awhile back, when I had gotten some Pygmy Cory Catfish, I came home and saw one of my African Dwarf Frogs dead on his back with a dead Pygmy Cory stuck in his mouth. Was very sad but I’m sure what happened, since African Dwarf Frogs have extremely bad eye sight, the frog just saw movement in front of him and caught the fish and choked on him. I know he wasn’t going after the fish. It was just the fish was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But sad because that’s a terrible way to go, choking on something. And who knows how long they both struggle before they passed. I hope it wasn’t too long.
Ah dang. I know you don't do click bait but I was hoping it would have been in this instance. Sorry about the Red terror Ben. I guess on the bright side it opens up the tank for a new opportunity.
I got three angelfish in hopes that two would pair up. They were about the size of a quarter. They got along fine for about a year until i had a pair. The pair killed the 3rd one and spawned a couple of times. The male killed the female after one spawn. He is now in a separate tank with a few catfish.
Very unfortunate Ben, however your new project sounds interesting, will be watching closely. ... but let me say this, you don't need 20 watts per gallon to heat a 55g tank, seems like a high potential for trouble IMHO...an inkbird controller with two 125 watt heaters is plenty & far safer scenario, 250 watts will heat the crap out of that 55g tank.. cheers
Admittedly a bit of an overkill (my rule of thumb is 5w per gallon) but I'm running it through a controller (and it's one heater that I already have on hand that can do the job. I do have an old Eheim 300W that would work but it like 20" long.
Hey ben, yeah very bad news as you know it's absolutely the worst part of the hobby. Losing fish is a gut wrenching feeling. Know matter how good of of a fish keeper we think we are with decades of experience this stuff happens and we punish ourselves for it. Good luck with what you do next brother.
I agree with what doing but not sure on about how much discus your going to go with i choose 6 with a 75 gallon tank which they were the discus and 80 degrees my temp was very comfortable for me than a 55 which may be good for you but 75 was good for me so I kinda hoping you gotta enough room for the project let know we see.
Sounds like a good plan. I wish you success.
Wow I'm so sorry about what happened i love watching your channel and have learned a lot from you i hope thing's get better there
Sorry for your loss 😢. Love the discus idea! Here's to a bright and exciting future! ❤

Hi Ben- 55 gal is ok as a grow out tank for discus but for a group of 6-7 you are going to want a minimum of a 75 gal tank
Hi Ben.
I just saw your video and heard u will install a 1000watt heater yo maintain correct temperature for discus.

I think that 1000 watt is a bad idea. Unless you intend to use an ink bird.
I have 6 embers and 6 glow lites in a 10 gallon. The embers can get competitive and fight for dominance but the glow lites are so sweet. The most important issue with these fish is over feeding them. They are aggressive eaters. NWF

Ben, your going to want to turn that heater up higher than 80-82. Discus do much better at 86-87 degrees.
I got three angelfish in hopes that two would pair up. They were about the size of a quarter. They got along fine for about a year until i had a pair. The pair killed the 3rd one and spawned a couple of times. The male killed the female after one spawn. He is now in a separate tank with a few catfish.
Man that sucks ben sry bout this

Very good idea to re-home. Much easier to pair cichlids when they are young. Sorry for your disappointment 😔
Yeah hear it is minus 13c out
I'm sorry, but I raise and breed cichlids all the time, and you cannot raise them separate then expect them to breed; always raise together.
Ya sux
So your plan was to grow the female and breed them in a 55 g😑 😐
Can't wait to see the new discus tank I know it will be great 👍👍
