  • Where Desert Meets Sea - Peru's Pacific Coast | Nature Documentary
Watch 'Wild Journey - Chile: Country of Contrasts' here: • Wild Chile - A Country...
Dramatically, the coast plunges into the sea, the so-called Costa of Peru is a gigantic desert on the Pacific Ocean, 2,400 kilometers long. Rugged, bizarre, like from another star. Ancient cultures settled here, the Moche and the Chimú. Later the proud Inca, the self-proclaimed royal people of the Andes, ruled.
In the small town of Huanchaco in northern Peru, the fishermen build a new boat every month: from reed. The small ships are called Caballito de Totora (reed horses), because the shape is reminiscent of a horse and the fishermen ride in it kneeling in the waves. About 2,000 years ago, the moche used it to go out to sea. Carlos Segura Azola is a descendant of the moche. He is currently building a "reed horse" again. But actually something completely different occupies him. Carlos has been afraid of the sea ever since his father drowned at work. The fisherman consults a Brucha, a witch. She tries to drive him out of panic at the Pacific with mysterious ceremonies. At some point Carlos' reed boat is finished and he has to get out to his nets again.
In the south, in the port city of Pisco, there are hardly any private cars. Mototaxis on three wheels are the means of transport here. Every moto looks different, because the young drivers compete with each other. They constantly pimp out their tricycles with spoilers, mirrors and all kinds of decorations. Because if you stand out in the traffic jam, you get the most passengers.
But nowhere else in Peru is road traffic as dense and chaotic as in the capital Lima. That's why Juan Ortiz goes daily with his Delta glider over the coastal road into the air. He is the flying reporter and reports live for the traffic news. And he is not alone with his aircraft. Dozens of paragliders float along the cliffs of Lima at any time of the day. The Pacific provides a constant upwind on the up to 160 meter high cliffs.
Somewhere in the labyrinth of the metropolis of millions hundreds of believers trot to the beat of the music of a Jesus statue on the cross. A procession for the "Lord of Miracles", the brass band intones church songs. The music student Bruno Alvarado drags and plays the largest instrument, a sousaphone. Every day there are dozens of processions in Lima. Practical for Bruno, he finances his studies with the musical accompaniment.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, in the Paracas National Park, it is deserted. Luis Zapato runs a kiosk on a lonely beach amidst huge sand dunes. The kiosk has meanwhile developed into a gourmet temple, even the capital city dwellers flock here. Especially because of the scallops that Luis is the only licence holder to collect far and wide from the seabed. Inti Mar he called his beach snack, Inti is the sun god, Mar the sea. At Luis you literally eat like a sun god at the sea. This is only possible here, on the Inca coast.

We not only surf the shore but the open seas from wa’a to wa’a with the kanaka is the legendary sacred plant and the ancient legend of “KELEA” from western history is always In accurate always twisting the mo’olelo to lies . Our ancient chants tell the truth. Here to a beautiful people I indigenous people of Peru who may have road their wa’a on the shores but He’e nalu is the gift from the universe to the Hawaiians

@@shadetreader it gets wearisome, 2011 or so, ppl found a manufactured open forum. One had to pick their forums, before that, and before that?. There was mainly magazines (the internet being basically, a digital magazine, pages and pages of it, but a magazine nonetheless?. Interesting side note, magazines were very prevalent, tv ads for them constantly, (whereas, it’s mainly insurance products now?), but, I digress, before social media (BSM?), “research”, (as ppl like to call it?), took a very different form, taking note of what “they” said, as opposed to what they do. This took time, and if we had the luxury of today’s bandwidth?, and hindsight?, I don’t think the world would be in the position it finds itself in. (What were we to do, with our “suspicions”. Tell a journalist?).
Any amount of activism, would have fell on deaf ears (moreso than now, even?), but I sincerely hope, a genuinely informed generation, may have a better chance, of making positive change, for the betterment of us all.
I will help, where I can.

Its the rain shadow effect.. and the fact that winds blow E to W. in those latitudes the Amazon forest recycles the rain up to the E foothills of the Andes.
They are so high they squeeze the rain out so most of the water falls and glows back into the Amazonian catchment.. The Pacific side of the divide is left very dry.
The mountains are formed by the Pacific plate diving under the S. American plate.

Carlos you are a brave man to take on Tangaroa the sea to get your self kai this way all your life.
I take my hat of to you and your brother who makes these little boats without the use of nails or wood.
What a beautiful village you live in so colorful and full of life.
My Maori forefathers traversed the Pacific in hugh things called Waka.
They were known as the sailors of the Pacific long before Europeans ever reached over this side of our world of plenty.
They used hugh trees with it's centre cut out on double hold Waka joined together in the middle with weeds perhaps from your country of Peru that held sales in the middle to be used to catch winds to help their forward motions.
The stares gave them the knowledge of travel across the mighty seas.
Peru gave them the kumara, rewai, gourds and possible corn to help[ sustain them in their new lands right across the Pacific to Aotearoa.
I have enjoyed your Doco and this should go along way of encouraging more to come visit your villages with their egg white, lime and surgery drinks.
I grow limes here I'll need to try your drink to see if I to will like it.

Swimming lessons are super important. We didn't get them because my mother didn't/doesn't like how she looks in a swimsuit (40 years she hasn't worn one) and was apparently the first woman to have baby weight after giving birth to two boys (separated by 3 years). Never went to beach/pools bc she would have to wear a swimsuit. I got them as an adult and became a lifeguard in 2 years.

35:40 I don't have any more confidence in a Harvard Doctor than this old witch. They're the same. They work on human bodies & minds. If she can convince him he's cured, then isn't he? 🤩 Yes! But she knows he has deep fear. She's as good at guessing his diagnosis as any doctor Stateside!

You are 100% correct. Except for Loma Linda Hospital in California. He should go there for a doctor and ask them to work WITH the Shaman.
Holistic medicine by Shamans are more than old, useless remedies. As we've all learned. A great thing would be if both these doctors respected each other and collaborated. You are 👍👍👍👍👍👍 right!!!!!! 💋💋💋💋💋
