- Urk is a beautiful Dutch fishing village on the borders of the former Zuiderzee, currently the IJsselmeer. It lies in the North East of The Netherlands in the province of Flevoland. Urk is well-known for its local traditional costume and the fact that it is part of the Dutch Bible Belt.
Urk used to be an island in the IJsselmeer until it was connected by a dyke in 1939 with the town of Lemmer. A few years later, in 1942, it no longer was an island but in stead became part of the Noord-Oost polder, a large area that was drained and cultivated as agricultural land.
It is the most religious village in The Netherlands. About 98% of its population are member of a protestant church and 94% still attend church. Urk has a very tight community and thus has the lowest percentage of a population with a migration background. Hardly ever do Urk's inhabitants marry outside of their community. It also has the lowest unemployment level. You will find the largest fishing fleet of The Netherlands in Urk, despite the fact that the IJsselmeer no longer habitats sea fish. They switched to catching fresh water fish like Eal and Bream. Many fishermen moved their activities to the North sea and no longer land their catch at Urk's small harbour.
These two merged films from 1920 and 1929 have been motion-stabilized, speed-corrected, restored and A.I. colorized by means of modern software.
The lovely music is by contemporary composer Gerard Franklin.

Vorig jaar was ik nog in (op) Urk. De oude werf is er nog. Een aantal botters ook nog. Ik was verbaasd hoe vriendelijk de mensen mij groetten. Leuk ook nog een paar jongens in blauwe overalls op klompen. Deed me meteen denken aan de kinderboekenserie De Kameleon.

All the people in this time seemed so kind and harmonious and no rush for anything
There were very long working days and labour was mostly manual, requiring quite a bit of muscle power. They knew how to get things done fast and good with an enormous work ethic. Families were large, vacuum cleaners, dish-washers and washing machines had not yet been invented. Work, work and more work. And nothing done slowly. Be sure there was a constant rush to get things done and to bring a meager meal on the table. My grandmother started a family in this age in a similar village, that's how I know. From a very early age she had to serve as a housemaid in another town, five kilometers walk away, which on top of her enormous workload she walked daily twice. Only to come home to more work for her mother, like knitting socks. With her own family and her young husband away at see most of the time, she managed to scrape, so that she could offer her five children (rather small family) one fourth of one small candy piece each day. That was the luxury and delight of my mother's youth: her quarter piece of candy after school. And then also she had to work, work and work some more. But not on Sunday. Sundays were for church, family visits and some hard-earned leisure at home or close by, since transportation was by foot mostly.
My grandmother had a very hard youth amidst the constant threat of poverty and an overworked mother without much kindness to spare. This was quite common. People were fighting lice and flees, and common diseases we can cure now, took the lives of both the fiancé of my grandmother and the fiancée of my grandfather, by which they both found themselves alone and married each other instead, without much romance.
Yes, of course there was also a tight knit community and laughter and joy amidst the many relatives and close neighbors. But often they were dressed in black for half a year, due to another death in the family.
To balance your view a bit, I thought I might inform you about the hardships of every day, as you seemed to romanticize the time period.

I've been watching a channel called yesterday's today and for the past year it's completely gone, just wondering what may have happened to it, they used to play the same music every video for a time which I want to listen to again
Ruimschoots fantastisch! Ik kijk ze wel vaker maar deze heb ik bewaard op mijn harde schijf. Al die lieve mensen die leefden in ons mooie verleden. Toen wij nog jong waren groeiden we op in hun nalatenschap.

@@hansanders4983 Klopt, inteelt was vroeger echt een dingetje hier. Vandaag de dag is dat natuurlijk anders, maar in mijn familie zit bijvoorbeeld de moeder van mijn moeder in de stamboom van de vader van mijn vader. Zitten wel heel wat takken tussen maar het is wel bijzonder en komt hier nog best vaak voor. We hebben ook een erfelijke ziekte die alleen op Urk is en door inteelt is ontstaan; de Ziekte van Buchem. Ik ben blij dat het nu beter is in ieder geval.

Life was physically so demanding in that town (and most of the world) back then, but the children seem to be very happy while playing together. I wonder what the eyes of the older people featured in the film had seen.
Most of those children would want to live in our time where they've got PS5s and GTAs.
@@cashewnuttel9054 No, for sure not. I was of two generations later and we hardly even had tv during the day then. But all 53 kids from our street played happily together. We were SO happy. We had each other, the grass, a ball, a rope to play with, roller skates and lots of fantasy. We'd play hide and seek and tag and football. We'd go swim whenever possible and explore the neighborhood and the nearby small wood. We would build things out of scrap wood, get berries from the bushes and beechnuts and the likes. We'd play with the dogs and cats of the neighborhood.
I feel very sorry for this generation always hiding behind their devices. Not half as much fun as we had. Maybe not even a quarter.
But... many of the teenagers would want to live in our time. Since school was till the tender age of 12 years old and hard labour took its place with long hours.

@@cashewnuttel9054 You seem not too well informed. This is of only about a 100 years ago in a town, where life was good. There's much more fighting nowadays. They didn't starve, their was no slavery, and no destruction. Diseases we have now too, even new ones like Lyme Disease, Ebola, Aids, Zika and Covid-19.
Besides, kids don't think about these things. They think about playing. And that was done in abundance back then.
Furthermore, death is guaranteed to everyone that's born on the planet.
When we look at the world of today, not in our regions but in way too many, there's all that you speak of. Like in Yemen?
So stop assuming, get some real information and try to only then write something down. Otherwise you'll come across as silly at best.

In some ways its sad to see how much globalisation and the modern world have destroyed local and regional culture and identity. it used to be when you traveled the world or even your our country it was differint, the dialect that ppl spoke the way they dressed , the color of there skin and the houses they lived and worked in were all differint. now u go from one place to the next and you will find paved roads, modern buildings, everybody wears modern clothing, regional diealects have dissapeared you might as well not waste your time and money and just watch films like this to see something differint.
Funnily enough the town in this video (I live there) still has a local dialect and the old part of town is a big part of our culture still

Urk was an island back then which is why you see so many people being transported by boat.
Astonishing clarity! Love the local costumes and the early attempt at "product placement" for Persil, just look at all those lines of gleaming white washing!! Another thing, as part of the Dutch Bible Belt I'm surprised at the lack of reticence at being filmed, maybe because at the time, for them it was still a bit of a novelty. I wonder if it would be possible to achieve the same sort of film today?

I visited the Zuiderzeemuseum a couple of weeks ago. Easily one of my favourite museums. This video should definitely be shown there.
Such delightful musical scores to accompany the video! The colorization and AI enhancement does wonders to these old black and white movies of Dutch towns. I'm always amazed at Holland's outsized impact on the world as a great Maritime power, for such a small country. Growing up less than 10 miles from Times Square in New Jersey there are many reminders of Dutch settlement in this region. For example New York was formally known as New Amsterdam. And there are many towns with the suffix "kill", such as Cresskill where our family lived in New Jersey, and Peekskill, New York where I attended High School. "Kill" means riverbed or water channel in Dutch. Then there's the Tappan Zee bridge that spans the Hudson River, the first word honoring the Native American Tappan tribe, while the second word "Zee" is the Dutch word for "sea" in English. And the list goes on and on.
De onbekende havenplaats op 4:49 en 7:34 is Enkhuizen met de Drommedaris (het huidige gebouw van de Muziekkring) naast de ophaalbrug en de Zuiderkerk op de achtergrond.

Heej Rick, elke keer denk ik weer als je iets upload, dat het me deze keer iets minder zal raken, omdat ik het al vaker gezien heb. Toen ik de jonge dames zag, dacht ik nou die mogen er best wezen. Het volgende moment, dacht ik dat ze al ver over de 100 zouden zijn geweest nu... Bizar, als je dat tot dat besef komt. Elke keer flik je het weer om me aan het denken te zetten over wat was en wat is en steeds zie ik weer hoe weinig er eigenlijk veranderd is aan de mens en zijn doen zelf. Alleen techniek verandert.

Fascinating video. I had to google map Urk. The lighthouse which features in the background of the lovely game the children are playing near the end of the video features several times on google maps also.
It was an island back then but it isn't anymore.
