The wonderful Dutch Fishing village of Scheveningen in 1928 in color with added sounds [AI enhanced]

- Scheveningen is a fishing village on the Dutch North Sea coast bordering the city of The Hague, the residence of the Dutch government. In this film you will see the daily activities of Scheveningen's many fishermen almost a century ago. To large extent the film is self-explanatory. Therefore no commentry has been added but in stead this is my first full documentary with only added ambient sound. It was a lot of work to chose the right sounds and get them properly synchronized.
You will see hectic activities of the quays of both Scheveningen's harbours, traders bidding for freshly caught fish, barrels of fish being filled and handled, children hanging about and pinching chunks of ice that have broken off huge ice bars, women making and repairing nets, nets being layed out to dry using horses and carts, fish being cleaned and hung on metal rods to be smoked and much more.
The original, rather poor quality, B&W film has been restored, enhanced and colorized with the latest A.I. video software.

Music: Manually added artificial sound to enhance the ambience.

So neat how the kids are interested in the camera.
I stopped there, at the marinas, for a drink last week, trying to feel what life was like back then on the docks! So thank you for the video and for all of the work!👍
Further "progress" since my last visit about 3 years ago: The "180° view" sea skyline of this very touristic town, inherited of over 250 wind turbines, "turning" into red flashing lights at night.
Amazing film, thanks for this trip into the past. You do wonderful work on these old films and memories of days gone by. Greettings from Canada!
Thank you too!
What great history of the work people did in the Netherlands to prepare fish products for their families and the nation.
A real treat for the tastebuds, I love smoked herring!! Mind you I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of those fisherwives making or mending nets, what an intimidating bunch!! Another triumph Rick.
i was thinking the same thing. very strong woman, but still smiling enjoying life.
Delighted to watch more of these extraordinary records. Your hard work with the sounds is well judged. Wick in N E Scotland has similar scenes but 'stills' only. I have seen them in the town museum. Should be on You tube. Will message you on this if so.
I watch this one a lot. Always seeing something different each time.
Vielen lieben Dank für Deine wundervollen Beiträge!
Hartelijk dank, altijd interessant uw videopublicaties.
just 95 years ago.but a world apart
in 95 years, Europe will be barely recognizable thanks to diversity and inclusion. It is what it is.
My dad is 98 and was alive then
What about cheek busting?
My thoughts too! Amazing it is.
@@LifeIsATest4TheHereafteryou don’t know history , you are ignorant AF
The watertower around 2:30 is still there, the fields as well, but no nets to be seen anymore. The railroad to Scheveningen is long gone, but the small station buildings are still there.
Very interesting to see. Thanks for the work you do
My pleasure
Excellent video! Your considerable efforts had wonderful results. Dank u wel!
Thank you very much!
Great video Rick, amazing footage, great work 👍👌😀
Glad you enjoyed it
Incredible!
It looks like more than a “village”. A wonderful variety of faces of diverse character. Seeing kids always makes me smile. I’m guessing that “Our Friend” was a British vessel.
Dit is zo interessant. Vroeger werkten mensen zo hard.
Smoked Herring I'm guessing? I've watched so many Pathe' and Britannica Instructional movies, I could hear the narrator's voice talking about the quaint customs and industrious lives of the people in the port village, leading up to the ''this village is known for it's distinct smoked herring ....'' Thanks for the Fun., always interesting to see some History
more likely mackrel. herring is mostly salted. sometimes panbaked here
Scheveningen a little different today! Dankjewel.
Opnieuw buitengewoon!
Dankjewel.
Graag gedaan
love the inquisative boys.
Prachtige opnames van bijna 100 jr geleden...zo uniek 👍
Those cheeky boys would be over 100 years old now, wonder if any of them have made it.
Beautiful we not see it again 👍
Pura vida mi amigo Rock and guys amazing video I like it
Superb slice of time probably something was of made of Lowestoft or somewhere up the east coast now lo g gone as a fishing port (Southwold Beach Fishing Village ?.
No idea what you mean. This is all Scheveningen in The Netherlands; nothing to do with Lowestoft in the UK.
Subtiel en passend gekozen geluiden, mooie inkleuring!
Nee, de A.I. heeft de kleuren van de vlag verkeerd ingeschat. Dit soort foutjes handmatig corrigeren is ondoenlijk.
Merci!
Brilliant, again.
Like 46, bedankt!
so cool AI
Thank yo you!!
Op ~ 2:10, blauw-wit-rood?
Tja, de colorization A.I. was in boeren-tegen-stikstof-stemming :-)

Horses are and always have been working animals and if well-treated live good lives. Nothing in this film shows bad treatment of the horses: they look healthy and a cart loaded with fishing nets is an easy, light weight pull. I agree that there are bad examples in the world, but your comment is far too general, if you ask me.
@@Rick88888888 If you could ask a horse : do you want to pull a cart or end up in a pot? I imagine its answer.
The horse has adapted to work for humans, in return its species has spread throughout the world. A real plus for his species. Many others disappeared because humans had no use for them. One must always think in terms of advantages of living Species. Mother Nature has no good or bad morals.
-----------------------
If you adapt you survive.
If you don't adapt you disappear.
There is no choice. Mother Nature's laws cannot be questioned or judged.
@@eliudesita2010je partage votre sentiment..
Is it the dress or are all those women unusually plump?
dress
Probably haring, although an an Englishman it amazes me how you eat them over there. I'll stick to poffertjes I think.😄😘
the EU and the dutch govt fixed the fishing industry for good.
Let's hope that the Dutch people have the wisdom to elect a decent new government in November. I put the flag out when the current incompetent, deceitful, manipulative, untrustworthy, visionless and constantly fighting Rutte-government fell two months ago. Time for decent people like Pieter Omtzigt and Caroline van der Plas to take the lead!
@@Rick88888888
Words like decent and politics don't always go hand in hand .
But nevertheless , I hope you get your wish , when the time comes .
@@Rick88888888 Agree on Rutte, but Caroline van der Plas is a con women, also see her ultra-right wing candidates, partly even from neo-faschist Baudet's corner, fascism did already more than enough harm to our country during WW2.
Heel knap hoe het geluid is toegevoegd, mijn complimenten!
Ja, leuk hè?
gaaf man
Prachtig Rick Gr.Dick
I lived here briefly. From 🇬🇧
Scheveningen today.... filled up with high buildings...
*I love these old videos so much !!!!!!* ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Prachtig!
Thanks,well done!!
Thank you too!
Incredible footage history truly is a fascinating thing
Yes it is❗️😁👍I'm so glad this was posted. Thank you❗️
My grandma was 12 at that time which came from Scheveningen.
Heel gaaf om te zien. Wat een ruimte was er toen.
Thanx
Prachtig! Mooi gedaan, dankjewel 👏👏
Thanks for this trip back in time. Fascinating and so well done.

There is a way of saying Schevenignen. The Dutch way and absolutely no other way ! This was dicovered by (literally) thousands of German soldiers, trying to escape Holland at the end of WW2. Clothes went missing off washing lines and out of shops as the desparate soldeirs tried and many failed to escape. When spoken to as were just about all strangers in just about all the towns and villages of Holland, the locals would refer to Schevinignen. The German couldn't say it so were shot. Thousands of them !!!
As also portrayed in the film "Soldaat van Oranje" ("Soldier of Orange").
I first learned that from a rich German who owned one of the largest chains of off-licences in Germany. I couldn't believe it at first ! We were in a Brown Bar at the time in Amsterdam. Next, many years later I learned the numbers from someone who lives there and has done all his life. Amazing !@@Rick88888888
FAntastic work - I was trying to work out where the net drying would be in the present day. Maybe in between the outer harbour and the sea - so alongside what is now Visafslagweg...?
Could be, I don't know.
👍👏🇧🇷
i see the powerlines : )
Indeed, what you see are the power lines of the trams and trains to Scheveningen. www.tramwegstichting.nl/HTM/HTM77.php The HTM already had electric trams around 1905!
Also the ZHESM opened an electric train service from The Hague HS to Scheveningen in 1908. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuid-Hollandsche_Electrische_Spoorweg-Maatschappij and nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZHESM-materieel
Those children in the clip were the ones that had faced the Second World War as a soldier… or whatever
Unfortunate generation..
Crazy to see myself again at 7:24.
