Most of this is built on reclaim land from wetlands marshlands vital to keeping flood regulated all this willl soon be underwater because you will never ever beat mother nature I wonder whos bright idea was this to condemned your entire province into oblivion because you actually taught you could built this in reclaim land below sea level.

@@michaelturner6425 Zeeland is bit out of the way by Dutch standards, so I guess its possible that some old ladies might wear the traditional stuff in the 1970s when going to town, but its possible they worked as tour guides or it was Easter or something. In America, to see an old woman in pre-1920s clothing with bonnets and such in the 1970s, when I was a kid, would have been like from another planet for any American.

1919 Netherlands was still an empire so that is not too crazy. I'd argue that even citizens of classical empires had a higher standard of living than many alive today. Actually, the Roman elite were so wealthy by today's standards they would be trillionairs. In short: decent wealth distribution is apparently very challenging when those trying to figure it out are presently rich themselves.

Cities where more beatiful because after the war we were only interested in rebuilding quickly and cheaply because there where many homeless and there was no money due to the war. Before the war we already started building ugly houses, because the Dutch population skyrocketed. On youtube there is a film made by the american goverment called ''Know your ally, The Netherlands'' you can see the rebuilding and de simpler cost effective buildings take shape.
They where happier from the tales i hear from the elders around here (i live in Zeeland) People were very friendly, if one man had a machine to plow the ground he went around the village and did that to every front porch, so people could easily grow some extra food. People also traded old stuff like clothing and pans, and traded fish for rabbits, or fruit and veggies depending on what kind of food the men gathered.
But the work was very though and people died young to diseases.

      Your 'anger' seems misplaced.
Since I lived in Romania for a couple of years, I gained some insight. The ones sticking to culture the most, were the ones, who were poorest and did not get out of their villages.
People in the Netherlands are still hard working people, mostly. But some jobs pay a lot better, than others. Berry picking is relatively hard work physically for a small salary, compared to working in the office and getting a much better paycheck. So not many people with a good education (which almost all have in the Netherlands) are willing to choose such work.
Since the parents are mainly richer, their children rather go on vacation during the holidays, then work for a relative small paycheck, which they don't need. Let them enjoy themselves for the time being; hard work will come soon enough. For housing costs are very high in the Netherlands and soon they will be buried in bills, responsibilities and hard work.
Have no clue what you mean with the Christianity problem today. Real Christians are still good and hard working people, giving of their money and time to help others. The only problem perhaps is, that less and less people are looking for God. Like the Bible says: you cannot serve both money and God. People have always looked for excuses to sin, in all cultures and all times. Most certainly also in Eastern Europe. Plus, it does help, when immigrants are not that interested in living in your country, since it is less rich. Especially immigrants from muslim countries have caused and still are causing a lot of problems in the Netherlands, according to statistics.
The workers from Poland and Romania come here, because they earn much more money in a short time here, than for the same job or even a much better job, in their home country. So they make a lot of money and the smart ones invest that in buying an apartment of house in their own country.
Since this benefits all participating countries, intelligent people do not complain about this.

Thank you Rick for this beautiful video. It is so special to see, I can almost not comprehend that this is real footage from 100 years ago. My great-grand mother is from Zeeland and lived during this time. I have a picture of her wearing this type of traditional clothing! It is a shame to see some of the comments are negative, political, or hateful. Therefore I just want to say again that I appreciate your work. And also that I think we can both value the past and the current times for the good parts and also acknowledge the lesser parts. But let's be kind to each other now, while we still can! :)

That said, before the Americans liberated Europe, people where way more friendly. Im thankful for their liberation ofcourse (And ofcourse the Canadians and Scottish, they liberated Zeeland) But Americans are more self centered then we where before and we took that habit. Before the Second world war everyone knew everyone, and everyone was friendly, though a bit harsh at times, to one another. Great piece of work. Congrats. Whoever filmed it back then had a good eye for composition and detail. People back then were hard working and God fearing people. While life was less complicated, it was also pretty hard. One needed to work hard and stay healthy. There were not that many good medications back then and people could die easily from an infection. Child mortality was also higher back then. All that made for strong, tough and hardened people. But there was also time for play :-)

    • @voraciousreader3341
      @voraciousreader3341 3 роки тому +1

That’s not what they were for, at least in the articles I’ve seen. Unless, of course, you have links to prove that they functioned as “sunglasses,” which would only be for peripheral vision. They certainly wouldn’t be at all functional, as a woman looking or walking into the east of a morning would have the sun directly in her eyes, despite her “sunglasses.” It literally takes seconds to verify or discredit our guesses....I’m always amazed when people clothe guesses as facts, without taking a few minutes on the Internet to see if they’re right!

    • @springkikkertje

Its not a precursor to sunglasses. Me and my ancestors are from zeeland. My grandma once explained that those gold pieces you see were part of the 'oorijzers' . Oor = ear and ijzer = iron. They were used to attach the caps firmly to the head. And the metal pieces on front were for aesthetics, display of wealth, to show which island, polder or village you were from and what religion you had.
