  • One of the many small parks around here that saw action during the civil war. The trench line running from the James river to the Appomattox protected Petersburg from the north and Richmond from the south. When Petersburg fell in 1865 the confederates headed west towards Appomattox Courthouse. Ware Bottom Church was a very active place to be during the later part of the war.

Probably 50 sites like this within 20 minute drive. Some huge like Petersburg battlefield some small like this. With 8 Presidents born in Virginia including 2 on the other side of Hopewell about 15-20 minutes away. Lots of history around here. Plan to visit and video most of them this year. Should be fun. Take care. Steve

Lots of little parks like this and a couple that are a lot bigger. Going to try and get to the closer ones this year and video them. Thanks. Steve

Learning about, and then visiting Fredericksburg, VA was quite moving. The thousands of men ordered to charge up that hill only to be mowed down, and then another company would be required to repeat that charge. This went on all day. Complete slaughter. The bravery required to see what was happening and still charge up that hill -that’s just off the charts.

Never been to the Fredericksburg battlefield myself. Plan to hit the ones close to me this year and branch out. The stretch between Petersburg and Richmond has a slew of smaller parks like this one plus the "Battle of the Crater" in Petersburg. Petersburg is huge about 9k acres I believe. Took the kids to Gettysburg years ago. Little Round Top gave me the same feeling. Just unreal what those men did. Towards the end of the war they fought the Battle of the Wilderness up around Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania.

Probably 50 sites within 20 minute drive. Some small like this and some big like Petersburg battlefield. We have a civil war trail that you can follow from Richmond down to Petersburg. 8 presidents born in Virginia including 2 on the other side of Hopewell in Charles city county 15- 20 minutes away. Lots of history. Plan to visit and video most of the closer ones this year. Thanks. Steve

The entire time I'm watching this video I'm thinking two things: Steve has to show me around all these historic places and think of all the goodies I'll find with my metal detector. Then, at the end, the dream is squashed! Well, maybe you'll still show me around some day! Buzz

That's what that sign said and it just hit me. Just having a little fun. Going to the one on the other side through the woods tomorrow and check it out. Got 4 or 5 within just a couple minutes of the house. Interesting 160 years ago this whole area was a Yank or Reb camp or battlefield. Thanks. Steve

Thank you. Just a small park but I never been or knew anything about this particular part of the civil war. Plan to similar videos throughout the year of the close ones and Petersburg battlefield. City Point in Hopewell goes back to pre-colonial times. Try to get there also. Take care. Steve

Got plans on that one also but it's part of the national parks system. Gotta have permits and fees just to put it on youtube. Just visited the other side of this one (Parkers Battery)and it also is part of the national parks. Doubt it's worth the fees to put on here but interesting place. Thanks. Steve
