What I love most about Dennis is that although he may have literally shared this information 1,000 times,, he always makes it seem to me that he is sharing it for the first time. It is a great talent for a historian to possess.
It’s shocking to think that consecrated ground would have condos on it now if it was wasn’t for the Battlefield Trust. It doesn’t bare thinking about. Another excellent overview of the battle. Thanks Dennis , and Gary, and to the Battlefield Trust for saving a vital part of American history. I would like to know if either Dennis or Gary are planning any lectures? From Toronto, Ontario Canada, formerly Newcastle in the United Kingdom.
One of my ancestors was killed at Maryland Heights September 15 1862. 32nd Ohio Company A. If you've ever stood on that ground, there is a weird sensation - for me at least.
Very cool! So educational! I used to drive by this property for years not knowing anything about it. Even going to music festivals at the farm just west. Awesome.
Beyond awesome. Should be required study for every serious student of American history. Even the comments are worth reading. Very few of the comments are silly. Almost all of them express profound insight and gratitude. How often does that happen on UA-cam? Thank you to all involved- presenters and commenters. This series is a work not only of history, but of art. American Battlefield Trust is an American treasure. All please stay safe. Robert Henry, M.D.

Dennis,,,,your awesome Sir...love the videos and the knowledge that you give us all,,,,I love the Civil War and would love to live in Harper's Ferry or close to it,,,,,been there and felt the history of the town,,,,
This is amazing. My family was from Oswego NY and surrounding areas. Several members were in the NY 111th who were branded the Harper Ferry cowards because they surrendered so easily. This video explains why, and of course they were paroled out and lived to fight on during the battle of Gettysburg and there is a memorial to them there.
my dad made sure we all went there in 1988!! hence my moms family was in the civil war and SHE AND I live in what used to be the rail roads for that then!
We used my sons April vacation of 2019 to tour the Harper's Ferry battle and Antietam Battlefield. We loved both but my then 8yo son has wanted to return and stay overnight at Harper's Ferry and enjoy the breathtaking views, train rides and hospitality of this historic place. Unfortunately Covid canceled our 2020 April Vacation to Harper's Ferry and Mannasas Junction. And it seems our 2021 plans are for naught also. I promised Jacob we will return as soon as possible.
Loved you sharing such an amazing part of our History! I am SO happy you SAVED the Land. I have a friend in Camden, SC. More land saved there as well! He walked the land with me. I would stop and feel things in certain parts. He’d tell me what happened where I stopped. Loved it!
I just visited Harpers ferry last weekend. What a great trip. If you visit, assure you hike the Maryland Heights trail and get unbelievable view of the rivers and town from above. Strenuous but worth it.
Great Introduction to a wonderful series, bringing to life not only the history, but the nuanced context of battles, the leaders, along with personal anecdotes/stories to make it seem all that more genuine/real !
Great video specially about General Jackson. He is my 3rd cousin. I did my genealogy. Harper's Ferry is a great town I visited during the 2012 Antietam reenactment.
@@petehenry7878 Probably 3rd cousin 5 or 6 times removed as obviously they aren't from the same generation. 😉 This means about 5 or 6 generations ago one of his ancestors had the same great-great-parents as Stonewall Jackson. Their most recent common ancestor was born around the early 1700s. Looong time ago. 😇
@@dennismende727 I'm 63 and it seemed to me that for someone to be the 3rd cousin of someone that was born nearly 200 years ago, they would just about have to be around my parents age of 115 or grandparents at 140.
@@petehenry7878 Yes, sure. If he were exactly Jacksons 3rd cousin (not 3rd cousin several generations removed) he would have been born more or less the same time as Jackson and should be about 200 years old. 😄 1st cousins - same grandparents 2nd cousins - same great grandparents 3rd cousins - same great great grandparents
Would love to see some possible drone footage above your position during this...that highlights positions of both army's. Just a suggestion. AWESOME presentation tho guys. Thank you.
I’m not completely sure but I think my brother-in-law was the photographer that took the photos for the group that evolved to the American Battlefield Trust. I can remember him telling me that he took dozens of rolls of film. He told us of all the places he went to take the photos to stop developers from building around the battlefields.

The only issue I see with this opening dialog is that the bluecoats invaded the CSA in 1861. Lee was taking the war to the north. Why should we be so concerned with this campaign being an invasion? Come on guys.
Jackson's plan is what they should have done instead of Pickets Charge but everyone at American Battlefield Trust lies and says all alternatives are stupid.
This sounds identical to what's happening today. The opposition hoped that causing havoc and chaos through extreme violence might cause voters to oust the Republicans and reinstate the Democrats. Late last year, Democrats spoke of keeping Donald Trump off the ballot in several states. You know what happened the last time the Democrats kept the Republican presidential nominee off the ballot in multiple states.
