    I just bought an Aventon Aventure.2 it is Awesome! You definitely need at least a left hand mirror, I have one on both sides and they can save your life with the way people drive in the Chicagoland area which is where I live. I try to stay off the roads much as possible and I bought a bike carrier which I’ve already used once and I’ve only had the bike for a few days. Russ you are Right Lol !

    I have the same mirror as you, Russ. I saw a guy that had mounted a similar mirror below the handlebar instead of above. He said that he gets a clear unobstructed view that way. I am going to try that and see if it works for me.

    Thanks for the video and for a point of reference. At "our" age, when we take a fall from a fast moving bike and all that happens is the mirror gets damaged, we should consider ourself very lucky. Good Luck with the knee.

      Thanks. Yes, I agree... considering how fast we go on the bikes, a damaged mirror is better than a damaged body any day!

    I did brake one already. I changed my handle bar and placed a bar extension then mounted my mirrors on the extension. The mirrors extend out by 3 inches and they work great.

    All my bikes get mirrors! Also, in time I've found out how to adjust them so my body isn't in the way. I use two mirrors because one is for traffic and the other is to watch my trailers.

    Russ. As the old saying goes”different strokes for different folks”. By that I mean I agree with your assessment of what type of mirror to have on your bike and where it should be located. But other people may go in a different direction. Also like the extension that Peter MacDonald did to his mirror….Dan

    The one aspect of rear view mirror selection that was not covered is LENS type. I have found a FLAT mirror surface without any wide angle curvature provides a far more realistic depth of field - the same principle applied to camera lenses (a standard 50mm camera lens vs. a 28mm wide angle lens). Especially important in judging distance of objects behind. So, for me, the common CONVEX mirror may be an unwise and less safe choice for some riders.

      100% fully agree!! I have a wide angle mirror right now and It's sort of a guessing game at times. I will be switching to a more realistic view very soon.

    I prefer the bar end mirrors because it gives me a greater area of vision. Since I ride on busy roads, I'm not kean on shifting my body (like you) in tight situations where there's potholes, bottles, branches and other road garbage that I have to avoid. I'm holding on for dear life in dicey situations and a slight glance at the mirror is all I can afford so I want to see as much as I can without having to do anything fancy. Amazon sells two bar end mirrors in a pack for $14. When I fall, it's not a big deal to put on another.

  • @glennburch1081
    @glennburch1081 2 роки тому +1

    I have the same mirror as you do Russ, but mounted completely outboard so it sticks way out on the left. I do not want to have to shift my body for a rear view, especially when traveling between 20-30mph on the Adventure. It comes down to a safety thing for me. If the bike falls and breaks the mirror, so what. Buy a new one, they are not that expensive. Just feel the safety thing trumps the risk of mirror breakage, but your reasons are also valid as well. I am 65 years of age, two prior back surgeries and learning to ride all over again after a 27 -year hiatus from riding a road bike in my younger years. So, moving my body around for a rear view at higher speeds is not for me. I greatly appreciate your channel and all of the valuable advice I have garnered watching your episodes, please keep them coming. TY Russ.

    I use the mirror that goes in the end of the handlebar and position the mirror below the handlebar. I think it works great and is my preferred method. who cares if you scuff anything if you fall. Be more worried about what breaks on your body. This coming from someone still grinding thru PT after falling on my ebike and tearing some ligaments in my scapula and a partial tear of my bicep. The least of my worries is the damage to my bike or its accessories which by the all came out of it unscathed!

    I don't have one mounted, but have thought about buying one. I don't ride in traffic (streets/roadways), so for now I'm good to go w/o one. At the local park trail, I'm usually the only bike rider there. Everyone else is either walking, jogging, or pushing a stroller of some sort.

    I have an end bar mounted mirror. I like it. It was one of my first purchases. But I do know lots of folks like the helmet mirror or other types. If I had the room I would probably use a bar mounted mirror. Oh, some people put the bar mirror down under the bar instead of up! I think it works well. My hubby ended up doing that. Oh YeS, I am interested in phone holders. I do not have one yet.

    My ebike came with 2 of the Hafny mirrors just like yours, but I needed only one. So I detached the mirror part on one of the mirrors from of its arm and attached that arm to the arm of the other mirror which effectively doubles its length and sticks out to the left twice as far. Now I don't have to move my left arm to see the rear traffic.

      I have two Hafny mirrors, but even stacking the two arms and using only one mirror would not be long enough to reach from the center of the handlebars to the outside of the handlebars. I'd instead look at motorcycle mirrors to do that.

    Bar end mirror or Handlebar totally depends on your handlebars. I have handlebar mirrors on two bikes. Bar end one on another one. All work well. Just if I am working on the work and turning it upside down, bar end ones are easier to work with for me. My bar end ones are under the handlebars and not over them.

    • @RussIsRight
      @RussIsRight  Рік тому +1

      My cousin bought some. Rip1Outdoors also uses them. For me, the area on the handlebar of ny bikes seem rather limited and so another large thing like a display screen might be too much for that area. Overall, I prefer using a side mirror, but some people like the camera/monitor instead. I don't think those things see your left side as well as a left side view mirror. I can see a car directly coming up next to me with a left mirror. Not sure I would be able to see it as well with a camera facing to the rear.

    I have been using the Hafny handlebar mirror. Technically it is fine. I am just not really happy with it and I think I will order a bar end mirror. I want something higher and sticks out further. Fortunately none of these items are very expensive.

    Those Mirror/s do not work on my New OCELOT PRO due to the Shimano shifter is in the way.
    The other side as well - the handle bars are not I feel long enuf. I made my own extension bar for Phone mount and
    Blue tooth spkr - no enuf room on HBs for it all. So end mirrors it is for the Ocelot.

    The youtuber e-vrc has his mirror upside down. Never tried it that way but your view shouldn't be obstructed by your arms if it's placed that way.

    • @RussIsRight
      @RussIsRight  2 роки тому

      I never considered this because I didn't want to be looking downward at the mirror. My natural forward gaze is on top. To look at a upside down mounted mirror would mean I would need to gaze down, which would take my overall view away from the traffic ahead. For me, I'd rather move my shoulder slightly.

    Had rear view mirror on my Mt. Bike. Didn't like it or find it useful, so took it off, never thought of it again! Might need to revisit it again! Looks like your mirror sticks out further than what I have! Seen a few guys with helmet mirrors, looks strange and awkward. Real mirror?? Break it & 7 years bad luck!! Don't need any of that on a bike!! lol

    • @RussIsRight

      I think my mirror sticks out maybe an inch or so past the end of the handlebar. Hard to see it with my hand on the grip. I think if you ride in traffic, it's safer to have a mirror than not. I would hate to keep looking over my shoulder without one while riding with cars at 20+ mph. 7 years bad luck... just like black cats, walking under ladders, stepping on cracks in the sidewalk... what else? I haven't thought about this in a long time! :)
