Great to see Walter on Out of Spec. I've been following his YT channel for a while. His updates on Pilot/Flying J openings, as well a national charging network openings has been a valuable resource.⚡⚡
Walter! He is the man for tracking the DCFC deployments. Everyone should subscribe to his channel. Interesting choice of words. V3 vs V4, no word on the gazillion V2 stalls. Right on the money, too many places there are no facilities, you gotta hike to find a bathroom. It is NOT good. Glad for a charge and that it is reliable, but there is the people element to this that is totally missing. There needs to be 24/7 facilities if you are going to be on a travel corridor. If we ever get to street level charging the ports need to be on the right side of the vehicle, NOT on the left like Tesla has it. Tesla should be the one moving the port with the roll out of the new chargers. We are not reinventing the streets and which side we are driving on just to appease Tesla.
Honestly, there should be 2 ports then on every vehicle. Porsche does it. They have the full dcfc port on one side and a level 2 ac port on the other. There's no reason why there couldn't be 2 nacs ports on a vehicle either. One to help with a Tesla SC and the other to have street side charging.
They really need to upgrade all of the V2 chargers. There are tons of places where you are driving through "fly over states" that mostly have V2s along your drive. Driving across Kansas on I-70 is a good example.
Vehicles with “not ideal” port locations need to fill stalls from right to left. “Ideal” vehicles need to fill in from left to right. This way, for example, a 12-stall location could support 6 ideals and 5 non-ideals with only one wasted stall. Tesla should publicize this in their software/app.
Thanks for the discussion, guys! I actually just used a V3 Supercharger yesterday in my Chevy Bolt EV, and because of the charge port location, site layout, and cable lengths, it's actually impossible for me to charge without blocking at least two stalls.
IMHO any well designed charging station intended for all EVs, should accommodate all EV charging port locations. Other EV charging networks manage to do that.
I meant more like they're in the wrong place to be compatible with the Superchargers. I don't actually think there's a wrong or right place for the charge port placement, each can be justified. :)
It’s like putting a charge port on the right side of a phone instead of the bottom edge. Yes it works, but it’s less desirable a spot for many other reasons
You bought the wrong car if your manufacturer didn’t care how you got the thing charged on the road. That’s on you. It is not Tesla’s responsibility to pick up the slack for the failures of other manufacturers. Beggars shouldn’t be choosers
I actually anticipate a majority of the V4 posts going in as replacements to the older V2 Supercharger locations, which are still surprisingly widespread. As we've seen from your recent I-90 Surge videos as well as other coverage of the older routes, a huge number of these Superchargers that were primarily designed for travel are still V2. The current count appears to be about 30% of the North American Supercharger population still being V2, so if those are all replaced with V4 as well as a majority of the new installations being V4, I could easily see V4 posts outnumbering V3 posts in 18 months.
that would be quite the undertaking to swap out V2 for V4 dispensers and cabinetry. Not saying Tesla couldn't do it, I just don't know why they'd bother.
@@anthonyc8499 It's work that's going to need to be done either way if they're hoping to have more V4 posts than V3 posts by mid-2026, and it might streamline the process if they are working with existing lease agreements.
Maybe, but part of the reason v2 stalls haven't been updated might be that those areas are less well-utilized. Perhaps they prioritize the better used places first. Though I certainly wouldn't complain if they upgraded a few of the charging desert areas with only slow charging
@@Cyrribrae Don't forget that the Supercharger Network is primarily a marketing tool, and V3 is already barely competitive with current public CCS charging infrastructure. V2 is a real stain on the perception of Tesla's charging superiority, so they have a strong need to replace/upgrade those sites.
I charged my Bolt EV at a Tesla station near my home to test my NACS adapter and paid 40 cents/kwh. The price surprised me since I've paid 48 cents at CCS stations. Yesterday, I stopped at a Tesla station on a road trip to visit family for the holiday, and the price was 68 cents/kwh. The station was very busy, so maybe the price is lower at other times, but I won't use this station again.
All good news, thanks, Isaiah and Walter!! I'd like to see some fleet electrification in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I also can't wait to charge my Ioniq6 at Tesla and at RAN chargers.
All non-Tesla drivers all welcome to Superchargers as far as I'm concerned, no strange looks from me. Just be creative in your parking at a busy SC station, if you can.
Agreed. We don't mind at all. And I don't know of a single Tesla owner that minds. Just try to park next to another non-Tesla so that only one spot is lost in all. Also, super busy Supercharger locations are not being opened to all so as to avoid issues/conflicts. Those that complain online are just EV hating trolls, not Tesla owners.
Francie got burned out. It takes a LOT of time and effort to make a really good podcast, especially as well-produced and thought out as Francie made. She was just ready to move on. It was an amicable change for her and Out of Spec. Isaiah is a terrific pick up by the channel and his first few shows have been bangers.
@@anthonyc8499 yeah …these kind of podcasts are really made for men, specially young with lots of times and energies to burn!! We men live to make it or die young trying to make it!! Ain’t no female Elon Musk out there killing themselves trying to change the world.. no diss to the ladies!!
My guess is that you’ll see the speed in the in-car nav (Tesla, or other smarter EVs can show this). But it won’t be obvious at the station itself unless you get out and check data plates.
We can. The question still out there is will we want to. Our free EVgo runs until late spring next year. We will make a decision then. Good question. Thx for watching.
Please stop calling the placement of the charging part wrong. I got so tired of Tesla Bjorn talking his nonsense that I had to stop watching his channel. My car has the port on the right which I like because I charge the car on the street. The port is on the curb side instead of having the cable sticking out into traffic.
Got to use a V4 post this weekend. The port itself is different in that it is not a complete circle and the handle needs to snap back in place on the post. But it seemed to need a pretty decent amount of effort to put in the post. One cable was already on the ground likely because the person did not realize it was not latched.
The vast majority of new V4 locations are opened to all. And the few that aren't, are simply being monitored for traffic to see if they become too busy or not.
Thank you Kyle. It was a privilege to have the ask & join the efforts of the hard working OoS Studio's team. Isaiah did a great job of framing the conversation, providing the logistics, and engaging with me, making the guest's participation of little effort. It may come as a surprise, but I too am a long time fan of your channels as well. Stay safe.
Thanks again Walter for joining me!

No better place to get DCFC infrastructure updates than tNAC. Great to see the podcast back, thanks Isaiah and Walter ⚡🙌
Walter's tNAC channel has excellent coverage of the DCFC rollout.

They need to replace all v2
Charging ports really need to be on the front right for street side charging. This would requires a front bumper camera for precise parking.
Polestar vehicles have the port in the rear driver side like Tesla's, so they don't have to block two spots in order to use Tesla superchargers 😎
