Nice collection of lesser known Monkees tunes that showcases Mike's unique vocal qualities...but you really can't pass over "What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round?"
Kind of surprised Papa Gene's Blues didn't end up on this list! That's definitely one of my favorites :3 I also enjoy St. Matthew, Sweet Young Thing and Circle Sky
I totally agree with you! Nesmith was doing Country Rock on the songs that he composed and produced for the Monkees first two albums ('66) All those others came in the later in the 60's to the 70's. Listen to "Papa Gene's Blues," "Sweet Young Thing," and "The Kind of girl I Could Love" all recorded in '66, all reflective of the country rock that he continued throughout his post Monkees' career.
I love Mike's voice on Salesman. He portrays the imagery of the song so vividly. I can't believe he's gone. His cool demeanor and green bobble hat while keeping the rest of the guys in check are a lasting memory of my childhood. There was a sense of security about him. Sleep well Mike and thank you 🙏
"You Just Maybe the One" is My Favorite Mike Nesmith Song. My next favorite is " Love Is Only Sleeping" I am So Very SAD 😭😢 to hear of his passing away yesterday 12/10/21. My childhood is dwindling down to nothing 💔🕊️🌹🙏🏽😞😭 REST IN Peace☮️ Robert Michael Nesmith.
Why this guy was never inducted into the hall of fame is beyond me. As a Monkee, he was the only one allowed to compose his own songs from the first album on (on the first two albums, other than Mike's songs, all the songs were composed by studio writers and musicians). He basically was the originator of "country/rock", before the Eagles had success with it, with The First National Band. He also wrote songs other artists had hits with, such as “Some of Shelly’s Blues” (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), and "Different Drum" (Stone Poneys w/Linda Ronstadt). He was the "grandfather" of music videos, basically inventing the genre - he had a 24 hour music video channel before MTV (he once said "music is to radio what music videos can be to TV"), and he won the first ever Grammy in the new Music Video category. The guy was the real deal and should be remembered as so.
@@GroovyLisa you are bang on with those missed out songs thoug!!!..I'm pretty shocked they dont appear as they were firm faves of Nez and his audience!
"What Am I Doin' Hangin' Round?" as well as "The Kind of Girl I Could Love" and "Listen to the Band"... easily all in the Top 10 that Mike sung for me...
Yes, this👆🏼 What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round is an incredible song and considered one of the first Country Rock songs. It's omission makes me question the validity of this list🤷🏻♂
I agree with you 100%! Bravo! Well-said! For some reason, this song also reminds me of the Casinos' "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye." Rock on from New Mexico, Marco! 😎
"Don't Call on Me" is one of my favorites. It is also an example of how The Monkees (when they were allowed to write or produce) were TOO musically diverse and creative. Headquarters and the later albums are really good, but they have no focus. Since the guys were casted for a television show, they didn't have the same musical tastes and backgrounds.

If there was an album featuring all the songs mentioned on list and comments I'm sure there would be many of Michaels admirers ready to purchase a copy. RIP my favorite Monkee. Thanks for over 50 years of "Listening to the Band"
Mike Nesmith was a great songwriter (we all know that) and a great guitar player (particularly on the twelve-string) but lets discuss that beautiful voice for a moment. Oh...and there is a version of "The Girl I Knew Somewhere" with Mike's lead vocals that deserves a mention.
What am I doin' hangin' round, You just may be the one, Door into summer, and of course Love is only sleeping have been favorites of mine for over half a century. Not sure where the time went, but grateful for the soundtrack.
I have a couple favorites songs sung by Mike and they are Love is only Sleeping, Sweet Young Thing and You Just May Be The One and Papa Gene's Blues. Thank You Mike for the amazing songs you sang.
Tapioca Tundra is my favorite but he has lots of great songs. Mike is very talented but so are all the Monkees. They got a bad rap as a band that was just a TV show. No way. Their music is incredible and there is a lot of it.
Glad "Love Is Only Sleeping" was the a top pick - one of my favorite Michael vocals, he really emotes, and that falsetto, wow! RIP Michael, you are missed!
How could you not have "What am I doing" ("hanging round" ) not even in the honorable mentions, I know you can't include every song nor make everyone happy, but I think there was some oversight here, I loved the stuff from the 1st National Band you played. I wonder if you can find and original album or you have to find on I tunes ?
The Monkees was a great TV show/ band loved all their songs..they helped me survive my childhood..I will always love ❤️ Mike Nesmith..Fly high Michael!!
Thank you, subscribed, we can all keep Mike's music alive by listening and enjoying it and maybe someone new will happen upon your channel, enjoy and share it with his/her friends❣🙂🌹
This is a good list in many ways,. Thanks for putting "Saginaw" up so high. It's one of Nez's most feeling vocals and is too often overlooked. "Magdalena" is gorgeous too. Peter Tork said that a version with just Michael on vocals was recorded and that he in fact liked that version even more than the released track. I've always wished I could hear it. But it's too hard to do a list of top 10 and really do Nez's vocals justice. While I really groove on "Love is Only Sleeping," I would have swapped it as number two for "What Am I Doing Hanging Round?" at number one. That's just one of the best Monkee vocals by any of the guys. I would also have swapped out "Magnolia Simms" for "Sweet Young Thing." SYT is a stronger song and features one of Nez's most powerful vocals. The list is hard to complete without "Listen to the Band" and "Papa Gene's Blues," not to mention the pure joy in his voice on "The Kind of Girl I Could Love." "Salesman" also features one of Michael's most evocative vocals; he really paints the pictures for you with his voice. It really needs to be in the top 10. I wouid add the Monkees' version of "Some of Shelly's Blues" (that's actually my favorite vocal take from Michael on that song, though my favorite overall version is on "Ranch Stash") and his committed performance on "Angel Band." "St. Matthew" includes another of Nez's most empathetic vocals. For me no list is complete without "Carlisle Wheeling," which is not only one of Michael's most beautiful vocals but also just one of his best songs. So I probably need a top 20 list. 🙂 But the list does include some real gems. Listening to Nez's beautiful voice on these tracks makes me again smack my head at the thought that he wasn't even going to be used for lead vocals at one point in planning for the Monkees show. I'm so glad he won that particular battle.
nice list. tastes are subjective, of course, so for me, "Tapioca Tundra" is way too low, and I would've included "St. Matthew" and "Naked Persimmon", but a huge thumbs up for "If I Ever Get to Saginaw Again"- an absolute gem.
While I Cry has been my favorite song of all time since 1969 when it was released. So many other great songs written and sung by this wonderful artist. He's one of the reasons I've been playing music for almost 60 years!
I like Mike Nesmith as a writer and musician but that's all the one I was love with is Davy Thomas Jones since i was 12th the music 🎵🎶🎶🎵🎶 of the Monkees 🙈🙉🙊🙀😽😺😸❤❤❤❤🤒🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😇😇😇but I can say for a fact I will be a loyal fan of the Monkees for as long as I live
I agree with some of your picks. For me, "Don't Call On Me" is my most favorite by Mike and "Papa Gene's Blues" and "What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round?" also stand out.
Sweet Young Thing is my favorite of his vocals. Cant forget Writing Wrongs either "Have you heard about Bill Chamber's mother?". Mary Mary (great vocal by Mickey). Hard to believe that the progenitor of country rock ended up being sampled by Run DMC. Good Clean Fun. Didn't even need to hear the title. Door Into Summer/Love Is Only Sleeping: what an awesome back to back set of tracks on PACJ, LTD if I'm not mistaken. We probably all have different lists but all are agreed. Pspa Nez was a Renaissance Man from Texas, proving once again that all things are possible😊
I think Nesmith was drastically overlooked by the general public with regards to both songwriting and vocal abilities. I love The Monkees, but if you take Mike's songs out of that group context and listen to them in terms of 60's musical contributions they are on par with some of the greats of that era, imo.
Like other people said: no Papa Gene's Blues (well, I guess it kind of showed up at the end), Circle Sky or What Am Doing Hangin' 'Round?? Unthinkable!
Nice collection of lesser known Monkees tunes that showcases Mike's unique vocal qualities...but you really can't pass over "What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round?"
Absolutely!! That's a classic..also Circle Sky and Pappa Gene's blues are both staple Nez greats
One of my favorite songs.
My sentiments exactly ! And “ The Door Into Summer”.
My favourite!
I just found this video, and I was coming to the comment section to voice the same sentiment. His voice is just incredible here.
Kind of surprised Papa Gene's Blues didn't end up on this list! That's definitely one of my favorites :3 I also enjoy St. Matthew, Sweet Young Thing and Circle Sky
I enjoy writing wrongs
Same!!!
@@nostalgiaspring12345 You could have left off Magnolia Sims and used What Am I Doing Hanging Round'
With all due respect to The Eagles, Nitty Gritty Dirt band, Poco and all their connecting bands, Michael Nesmith was the original country rock singer
and don't forget Gene Clark the heart and soul of the Byrds
He was defo on the forefront and pushed the style along.
I totally agree with you! Nesmith was doing Country Rock on the songs that he composed and produced for the Monkees first two albums ('66) All those others came in the later in the 60's to the 70's. Salesman is one of my favorites
It’s so true-Nesmith always had a sense of serenity and rationality about himself.
Mike's performance on "Salesman" is excellent. Unfortunately, I don't care for that song so much...
My fave songs of Mike’s: You might just be the one; Love Is Only Sleeping; I Know You Love Me (not sure of the official title)

Not to mention the fact that he won a lawsuit against PBS for trying to steal the rights to his property through fraud and theft
Papa genes blues, circle sky, and what I'm doing hanging around should have of been honorable mentioned. 😊
It's "should HAVE been", not "should OF been". Don't skip school.
