I was a sophomore in high school when this iPad was released. About 3 weeks after it came out, I went on a road trip to a far-off college for my sister’s state choir event; their student store had these iPads on display, and I thought they were the future of mobile tech. Later that summer, my dad won an iPad from a raffle at his work, and also bought the official black case from the Apple Store. But I digress; the design of the first-gen iPad does indeed hold up very well to this day, despite being a chonker by today’s standards.
Even the iPhone 3GS got iOS 6. Something interesting I've noticed is that both the devices that didn't get iOS 6 that were part of a generation which had members that did get iOS 6 (iPod Touch 3 and iPad 1) don't have cameras. Maybe having at least one camera is a requirement Apple put in place starting with iOS 6?
The iPod Touch 3 should’ve got iOS 6. It probably would’ve ran it better than the iPod Touch 4 because it’s got the same internals but it doesn’t have a Retina display.
Still have my original iPad 1. Still works. I upgraded it to iOS4 and still use it a few times a year playing older games. Still love how the old icons look especially the iBooks app with its shelf design.
I was in my final year of college when this released. As an art major/artist, I knew I had to have this thing. I was excited for it as my first digital drawing tablet. Looking back, those were some dark days lol. It blew my mind at the time, but it was extremely primitive back in those days. Drawing apps were few and far between. Super basic. Remember those little metal styluses with the fat round rubber tips? You pretty much had to guess where your line would start. Zero accuracy. It’s amazing that I even finished a single drawing on that thing. Sitting here typing this on my 13 inch M4 iPad Pro is kind of surreal seeing just how far iPads have come. I still have my first gen iPad…sadly the battery has swollen and it no longer powers on. Can’t bring myself to get rid of it though.
When IOS 13 and iPadOS 13 came out, I couldn’t tell a difference. Now that iPadOS 18 is out, it’s more noticeable, but I can’t get over the fact it still looks like IOS
5:03 No you shouldn't. "iPadOS" was not a thing until iOS 13, about a decade later. In fact, technically, "iOS" was not a thing until iOS 4. So "to be exact", this is not running "iPadOS", nor "iOS". It is running "iPhone OS".
The Stock iOS 3 Wallpaper for the iPad, I’m glad that it came back onto the newer iPads, when iOS/iPadOS 16 came out. And heck, even did they give that Wallpaper a bit of animation to it for when you unlock it & also swipe down from the top to access the Lock Screen again while the iPad is still currently unlocked. Well, if there’d be one thing that I’d wish for, it’d be that if Apple can see everyone mentioning those old Wallpapers that we know & love & that Apple’d listen to us & bring them all back with an iOS/iPadOS Update, especially adding a bit of animation to them (Since we currently have iOS/iPadOS 18 out for the supported Devices (Current Version: 18.1), & which I’d include the unsupported Devices alongside that’re on between iOS/iPadOS 16.7.10 & iOS/iPadOS 17.7.1…) for when you unlock them & also swipe down from the top to access the Lock Screen while your iOS Device is still unlocked. If Apple was to listen to us on that & bring back all those old Wallpapers from basically every iOS Version that’d have all those gorgeous Wallpapers & whatnot, but add a bit of animation to them alongside, since what Apple did when iOS 16 came out back in 2022, I’d have Apple bring them all back with the iOS/iPadOS Update of either: 16.7.11 or 16.8, 17.7.2 or 17.8, & 18.1.1 or 18.2. And then for the unsupported Devices that went up to iOS/iPadOS 15 (Current Version: 15.8.3), especially for the Wallpapers that some of us may miss alongside (I know I do…) that were in iOS/iPadOS 13 & probably iOS/iPadOS 14 as well, iirc, it’d also be nice for Apple to bring those Wallpapers back with an iOS/iPadOS Update of either 15.8.4 or 15.9. But yeah, basically, all those gorgeous & especially nostalgic Wallpapers from every iOS/iPadOS Version, it’d be nice for Apple to bring them all back with an iOS/iPadOS Update.
I used to have an iPad 1. Used it til about 2016 - in 2015 the last UA-cam app for iOS 5 stopped working, and a year or so later the web app stopped working on the old version of Safari. Still plays a couple games and is pretty good for music, but since phones got so big after that I didn't see much point getting a new tablet after the 1st gen. I always found it a shame that it never got iOS 6, it definitely could've held on a couple more years if it did.
Man this channel is my new cozy place to watch, I recently came across ipad air 2 and ipad pro first gen 9.7, which should i get both ios is not updated yet the price is kinda similar
iPad is apple. “iPad” is a registered name by Apple. There is not Samsung iPad. Apple would sue. Samsung makes a tablet but it is not called iPad. Mac not pc

It's my favorite design for an Apple product of all time.
Well, the iPod Touch 4 with 256mb of ram got iOS 6 and runs it fine! So there doesnt seem to be any reason the iPad first gen couldn't get it
Planned obsolescence

I feel like the large screen with the little ram would’ve killed it
The iPad 2 is officially 5000 days old in the US as of today.
I still have my ipad 2, laggy tho

remember when iPads used iOS instead of iPadOS?
This iPad runs iPhoneOS technically

I found one on eBay but it costs almost $300. Not even possible to buy it.
Amazing how smooth iOS used to be…then they released the horrendous iOS 7 and iOS hasn’t been as smooth or polished since. Sad.
Those can be downgraded to iOS 3 using Legacy iOS Kit
Tethered 🙃

my question is... why did you buy it? you can't use it anymore because the software is too old and doesn't work anymore! no apps can work 🤷♂️🤔
Preservation of history mainly; as downgrade methods are finnicky at best to impossible at worst without SHSH blobs .
