Two years ago, I was in Toronto when I saw a street band playing this song. I was travelling alone, I felt that it was time to return to my country and see my family again.
this is the best version thanks for the lyrics, i used to listen to this when it came out riding the downtown train from vancouver, i was the girl waiting for you tom
All these songs like Martha, Ol, 55. The Heart of Saturday Night. Jersey Girl. New Coat of Paint. Tom Traubert's Blues and Hold On. This is nothing compared to this great song, I love this song.
@sagastardust No prob! Thanks for watching.........yea definatly the best version. I dont think Stewart is bad but compared to Waits, he doesn't match up.
Heard another version last night while watching the last episode of ''How I Met Yer Mother'' by Everything But The Girl. Nice cover of this song. Usually, I prefer the writer's version..Toss up here, Depending on who I'm listening to it with...I forgot Rod Stewart tried doing this one until reading the comments.
Jamie Borden Pretty sure Tom made a fortune from Stewart’s version. I think it went top ten. You can tell music lovers from people who just like music by this song. Music lovers hear Wait’s emotion. People who just like music in the background go for Stewart’s polish. Funny, Stewart was a real singer at one time.
@@philsphan4414 I sort of went through a small Rod Stewart phase..I even bought one or both? of the ''Great American Songbook CDs for my Mom. And his song with Jeff Beck (People Get Ready) was one of my favourite songs with his voice..''Tonight's the Night'' made me blush if I listened to it in front of my parents when I was 14 and got way too much airplay on my small one radio town. so I never bought his stuff when I was getting ''imprinted'' in my musical tastes. I'd love to hear Van Morrison or SRV..or heck, even Kurt Cobain, Layne Stayley. or Chris Cornell sing ''Downtown Train''.
@RonnieDioKicksAss I happen to be a music major, bro. I like Waits' style, I just don't like how rough his voice is. Pardon me for having taste different from yours.
When Tom Waits heard Rod Stewart's version, apparently he said he thought it was shit. In reply Rod Stewart said "Well the guy should eb happy that someone that can actually sing did one of his songs"
@rbmellen I think people, like me, are outraged at the amount of Stewart lovers spewing uneducated trash in the comment box on a video clearly made to honor Tom Waits and feel the appropriate way to express the amount of anger being felt, is by leaving a comment.
@DaNamesJesus Thats exactly why Stewarts version is, in comparison, a mediocre attempt to cover a song while in turn nearly ruining a masterpiece. I couldnt have said it any better myself- this song is perfect.
@chrycohauler ya but hes more popular and has sold more albums then any piece of shit hollywood sellout band you like go by a lady gugu or a justin beiber cd and get off a page where real artist music is played

Some songs are perfect. So perfect that they could be sung by anybody and still get you. This is one of those dream songs.
Definitely one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.
"They're just thorns without the rose; be careful of them in the dark." True, Tom
this is the best version thanks for the lyrics, i used to listen to this when it came out riding the downtown train from vancouver, i was the girl waiting for you tom
Originality. A real musician. I am a pakistani and I am a big fan of Tom Waits....
Guitar work is something out of this world
PEACE, My FRIEND!
❤️
The voice just matches the lyrics and the mood.Perfect.
Revival ? It never died and never will ! :)
Heartsick longing, almost a Stalker. Waiting, hoping to be noticed.
As a NY boy I can relate to this.
Most flawless, greatest, love song ever written by Tom Waits, aside from "Jersey Girl."
love it. Really stirs the soul.
All these songs like Martha, Ol, 55. The Heart of Saturday Night. Jersey Girl. New Coat of Paint. Tom Traubert's Blues and Hold On. This is nothing compared to this great song, I love this song.

Thomas William Hiddleston sent me here ♥
blows rod stewerts version away
The version of tom waith is better.
i like this version. sounds a bit like Springsteen. anna i mean that as a compliment
May I recommend the book 'A .Concise Guide To Eighties' Music' by Karl Vorderman. The author is a big fan of this track.
@RonnieDioKicksAss I happen to be a music major, bro. I like Waits' style, I just don't like how rough his voice is. Pardon me for having taste different from yours.
@enforcedmarco if you like pop sheen and hate the impact of great lyrics, sure
lyrics show up after he starts singing though which doesnt help if you're trying to learn it

Quedo un poco mas contento con las regalias que llegaron a mas de 1.5 millones en poco tiempo
fatfatat444 thanks
I’m a Tom Waits tragic, any chance there is a similar group to AA to help me with this addition?
The lead guitar is great. Is that Robert Quine or G.E. Smith?
I dont mind the views! lol
Sounds like you're looking for a date.
(P.S. "enjoi"?)
Hiddles.

LOTS AND LOTS OF HIDDLES.
This video has been Loki'd.
LA VERSION DE ROD STEWART ME GUSTA MAS POR SU MEJOR CALIDAD Y MUSICA......JVIER
Oh yes I do hate Tom Waits!! I can't stop crying every time I hear this song...
Too many mentions of Rod Stewart here...
@DaNamesJesus Thats exactly why Stewarts version is, in comparison, a mediocre attempt to cover a song while in turn nearly ruining a masterpiece.
I couldnt have said it any better myself- this song is perfect.
So whos Rod Stewart?
@dreamsinwhite1 hey Jake ,tell teressa to close the window ...simple!
I get the feeling he doesn't like girls from Brooklyn...
the man sings like a troll
im here cause of the Hiddlemeister
@cornypicklesrawesome ...Ef Stewart he can't hold a match to Tom Waits' talent and song writting...end of discussion
A " COVER'ER
I just can't take his voice seriously :/
TOM HIDDLESTON.
not bad, but... i kinda like the rod stewart version better
who. the. fuck. is. Hiddleston?
Rod Stewart's version is a soulless, over-produced piece of shit, whereas this, the original, is a work of consumate genius.
@chrycohauler ya but hes more popular and has sold more albums then any piece of shit hollywood sellout band you like go by a lady gugu or a justin beiber cd and get off a page where real artist music is played
