Ghost of Tsushima is an action-adventure stealth game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 4. Players assume the role of Jin Sakai, one of the last samurai on Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274. The game has no waypoints and has no clear guidance, it is meant to be played your own way.

It is funny he points out "there's no dishonorable way, just kill them" despite the game's overarching theme, because when it came to the real samurai they very, very seldom fought in the cinematic way movies and games depict them as... dueling one on one in a field of flowers in the wind, swords drawn... that just didn't happen unless it was some kind of duel between high-ranking nobles or clan leaders over some personal dispute.
Truthfully, Armor is actually very good at protecting you from getting cut, even the giant razor blades that are Katanas... so in reality, most samurai actually killed other samurai by literally body slamming them to the ground and then stabbing them in the eye or cutting their throat with a dagger, its where Jiujitsu (and later, Judo) came from.
And samurai were also apparently pretty harsh to citizens and abused their power constantly lmao
Thats basically how you have to kill an armored target, armor and even more steel plating is pretty hard and almost imposible to cut with a sword (i would say it's outright imposible but idk, sometimes i'm surprised), the same happened in europe with the full plate armored knights the only way of killing one was to wrestle him to the ground and stab them through the gaps in the armor
Wouldn't it technically ( very nitpicky thing for me to say) be Jujutsu ? I thought jiujitsu was the modern martial art
He actually says that because their “bandits” their is no dishonorable way to kill them. This does not apply to when dueling other samurai. When facing other samurai sneak attacks were looked down upon but it doesn’t mean people didn’t do it. You are correct with how many samurai don’t just meet up in a field to duel, Myamoto Musashi who was said to be the greatest duelist during that period got most of his wins via surprise attacks.
As Ebihara sensei pointed out, they weren't accurate in depicting the period as far as what kind of swords were used by the samurai and how they were worn back then and the duel element which was more of an Edo period thing (1600s till the 1800s) when armors weren't used, all in all, it's Edo period martial elements put in another era of Japan's history.
PS: A flagrant example of the mixing of periods is the use of iai techniques (drawing the sword and cutting at the same time), that's definitely a style that didn't exist back then.

Samurai romanticism began in the Edo Period during peace time. Before that, anything goes.
This is the exact same thing I said when I saw the state of play! Although technically speaking Jin's Lord is his uncle and if his uncle says it's dishonourable then it is for Jin specifically as honour is dependent on what your lord wants from you. Kind of like Knights and their King.
"Samurai swords are sharp. It cuts through the body like tofu"
This guy is a legend
ikr
@RiesbyfeRoastbeef I'm quoting the guy.... I would also trust him, someone who studies those swords, over you. Katana are well made blades and they can cut through bone. Many swords can.
@Eddie Ricketts @Orchidilia Let’s not romanticize katanas here. They do indeed cut through flesh like a knife through butter, but many swords do. They can even slice bone and dismember, given the right situation. They are not, however, magic. They were simply sidearms, just like swords for knights and Vikings.
@@fivesidedpixels4991 I'm not romanticizing. They can easily cut through flesh (like tofu) and cut through bone. I'm not suggesting they can cut a person in half in a single strike or anything but they are rather sharp, well made, and well designed swords so them, along with other swords, can easily kill a person and cut through things. Especially in the first few strikes when the blade is at it's best and hasn't been nicked or dulled and when used by someone that understands the blade and has the strength and skill to use it. They used to do sharpness tests for katanas by cutting up dead bodies.
@Eddie Ricketts There don’t seem to be any scientific tests like you say, unfortunately. If you can find a link, please show me.
Listen, I love Japanese weapons as well, but I also know they’re surrounded in myths. The fact is that there isn’t anything special about katanas that makes them cut amazingly. Tamahagane steel was a poor quality metal, so Japanese smiths had to devise several tricks just to create a decent blade. The swords were curved, but so were kilij and shamshirs in the East. They had a hard edge that stayed sharp, but chipped easier.
Do I still think they’re cool? Of course! Kenjutsu, iaido, battōjutsu are still incredible arts. Just remember swords didn’t matter as much as the people behind them.

Overall pretty accurate. The Director of the game did say that they took many liberties, particularly in the style of the outfits/gear, which were not constrained to the Mongolian invasion period only, but included outfits that didn't become fashionable until 100 to 200 years later. Nevertheless, I think it's cool that they did that because it makes the game more diverse and aesthetically pleasant.
The context of what the sensei said: “They are bandits...can use any kind of attack or tactic to destroy this bandit...also he is also alone and the bandits are many... there is no dishonorable way, just kill them.”
...oh yeah that makes sense now. The bandits were being dishonorable by being a group fighting against one person

@@d.n5287 no it’s actually buzzfeed. So even worse LMAOOOOOO
That's the thing: katanas did not exist at the time of the first mongol invasion of Japan, instead the samurai used similar swords called Tachi (this term is even used instead of katana in the Japanese localization for a more historically-accurate experience). The difference between a tachi and a katana is their typical length and how they were worn on the obi sash: a katana usually measures around 60 cm long and was worn with the cutting edge facing up; on the other hand, a tachi measures around 80 cm long and was worn with the cutting edge facing down.
The guy was pointing out the use of the katana in this era is anachronistic.
Lol he said “there is no dishonorable way, just kill em”
Yes because in real life samurai were not really honorable they chopped off the heads of the other warriors they killed and took money for it they killed their own friends if they had achieved a better head and took it they hired mercenaries to test their swords by cutting though as many bodys as possible with one shlash

Loving this game 😁 great to see input on its authenticity from an expert. 👍🏻
Went to the Samurai museum in Japan. Tokyo i think it was. Samurai were actually really small guys and it was interesting to learn how their weapons attributed so much to their success in battles. As he said you don't need a lot of force to cut through someone, and not many of them had that much power. Legit they were dwarfed by the average person nowadays lol
It’s basically Edo Jidai weapons and clothing in Kamakura period
Mathew I have no clue what any of that means but it sounds cool! Dope that you know that!!
Greg Harper the game take place in the Kamakura Period. The why they dress and the weapons they have was not around until the Edo Jidai period in japan. Personally I’m glad they went a little away from historical accuracy so that I can play through the first Mongolian invasion and play my samurai fantasy! Would be awesome if this game does really well and they make a sequel in the feudal era! I love Japanese history lol
Mathew ohhhh ok gotcha! Yea I’m glad they did too! A sequel like that would be awesome!!!
So the most iconic samurai weapons and armour in one of the deadliest and well known events in japan's history? Sounds good to me
Yeah. Katana start to appear AFTER Kamakura period. At this period, samura using tachi as side arms and naginata as main arms alongside bows, their favorite weapon.
I was wondering about it too if the “Dishonorable way” is a thing, saw few Samurai movie like 13 Assassins, there they did all tricks even their odds against over 100 enemies, they used tactic, traps and explosives to kill their enemies.
Samurai were brutal and violent killing machines yeah.... They practically used everything to their advantage as you saw in 13 Assassins
They favored practicality above all else and not these weird ritualized honorable one on one duels as portrayed in pop-culture as many of those romantic fabrications didn't come until the late Edo Period and modern era in the 1900's...
Honor to a Samurai back then was winning for their daimyo lords and clan by any means necessary and it didn't matter on the method that is being used like deception, espionage, ambush, night-attacks, guerrilla tactics and even assassination... Samurai were highly known for assassinating and back-stabbing...
@@heroicdefender9747 thank you for saying it
Samurai romanticism started in the Edo Period during peace time. During war time, they would use any tool, any strategy to win. They even used guns as far as the 1500s.
@@grandadoboman1995 They used guns even later, though mostly for hunting. With the stability of the Edo Period, there wasn't much reason for the larges scale gun production of Oda Nobunaga.
@@heroicdefender9747 that's honestly what I like about this game. This game mostly aims to depict samurai like the classic Kurosawa films (bless him) and it definitely succeeds. On the other hand it sneakily shows you the truth underneath the honorable "code" of the Samurai. They did fight like a shinobi as well if they had to.
I learned the history of Kamakura era in junior high school students. When I was a high school, I remembered that watched NHK drama the name is Hojo Tokimune who was Syogun at the Kamakura era. I have never touched Japanese history since then.
But I'm reconfirmed the importance of Samurai way after I played the game. Thank you for made such a great game.
Thank goodness for CC I couldn't understand a word he was saying. After I turned on CC I realized his English is quite good.
"There's not dishonorable way, just kill them, you know."
Eat your heart out Lord Shimura
4:24 "Wind" Stance.
But I like how this game isn't too far off from what an actual samurai knows.
You can tell they did Alot of research, but only implement what they needed.
His knowledge is so pure that I can't dispute anything he is saying, much respect!
That is great to listen to someone who understand the samurai way
Loving this samurai's pink earphones
It's a shame there's no game made about the hashasin assassins.
Like I wanna look at their beliefs and such you know?
AC 1 is the closest thing we have
@@thatemogamer2457 AC 1?
@@Softbirb Yes I understand but hashasin also had beliefs and are being seen as the best assassin in the Middle East.
@@houseplant1016 Assassin's Creed 1 the first game is set sometime during the crusades and you're part of a middle eastern order of assassins obviously the series went on to become it's own thing but the first game was the closest to the actual historical events
I Loved listening to him, I love the history of Japan and Samurai in general. So I was so excited for this game, And so far not disappointed. ^^
21st Century Samurai - "There is no dishonorable way just kill em"
Jin was way ahead of his time! 😉
Honored to see Ebihara sensei here! What a wonderful surprise, proud student of Ken-Zen
"There's no dishonorable way, just kill them, you know?"
Lord Shimura entered the chat*
Right?
"That is not the Samurai way"
Shimura, you're cool and all. But the very first death alone showed that these guys don't respect you or your honor. Don't give it to them.
Dishonor to Samurai is to fail your lord. If killing someone underhandedly saves the life of your lord or furthers his plans, you have been honorable. It's basically loyalty to the extreme.
Beautiful video. Thank you for your expert advice ❤
2:11 thats a great tactic against bunch of enemies..hes a beast😎 #respect "there is no dishonoured way just killem"
I love his earphones, looks like he lowkey borrowed his daughter's set for this one video. Adorable and yet strangely oppressive
How would it be oppressive to borrow your child's earphones?
Le-Blanc
I think it was just a mistranslation.
@@samuraijackoff5354 guess so
@@le-blanc1440 i was talking about his anime aura, I don't mean he oppresses his children
@@SeanKingstone98WEAK oh ok
I love how the dude looked past the system and just eyeballed the experience (even assigning statuses based on dress)... us as players are taught that vs shields (in this game) you switch to water stance... he instead saw it as why go full on vs the unarmored opponent that was presented. Would've liked to have seen his interpretation on Wind & Moon as well. He basically intimated that there could've been another tier of gameplay out there: fights between armored and unarmored opponents.
I also liked his point about how the anachronistic way that Edo period Japan is the default presentation for any historical Japan portrayals. I get it, the character was scripted for single-sword, but access to Nagamaki, Yari, or Naginata would've been dope -they script movements for the Mongols and your allies, why can't I reverse-engineer their techniques instead as the Ghost.
I like how he mentions Jin’s fighting style being very powerful and aggressive. It’s mentioned a couple times ingame that Jin doesn’t fight traditionally and almost like a monster.
4:00 this is actually pretty interesting. How sharp, though? 'Cuts-through-steel' sharp or...?
The game is really good and i highly recommend it. Honestly the photo mode is my favourite aspect along with the combat and exploration.
Ebihara-san sounds so cool!! Would love to see more videos of him!!!
He also is a kendo sensei at Ken-Zen Institute in NYC. His post-class words of wisdom are the best. This video definitely captured him well.
@@katabamibitch he is full of wisdom, grace and humor, always. We are lucky to have him.
@@katabamibitch “Even your mother dies... Might as well practice. She’s DEAD okay?” (Actual Sensei quote! lol)
@@RyuishiGoto I remember this!! Hahah he's said that in class before as a way to show how nothing should get in the way of your mental discipline to practice :)
I'm liking this video because of the great guy, Buzzfeed can take scraps of my like.
All of the stances in this game make me want to study and practice all of them with a real sword.
Loved his insight about movement, power, and armor.
I wish they'd told him the enemys were mongols so he didnt keep referring to them as other samurai
Great point. The pseudo-ritualistic style of combat prevalent in Japan at the time didn’t work against them, and, strictly speaking, samurai etiquette would not really apply to foreigners anyway.
i was waiting for a real legend to react to GHOST OF THUSHIMA thx :)
Wonderful, beautiful words!! Thanks Sensei.
Thank you sensei, I will buy the game tomorrow. 😄
"They look like bandits..."
Mongols: Am I joke to you?
kind of hard to point it out, but a nation of conquerors is technically just structured bandits
@@alvinreinaldy5148 The British are bandits as well, then. :)
@@InfiniteDeckhand yes, all specific nations that occupied another countries and take their resources are bandits on those point. i am talking about everything up to WW2.
For anyone interested, the purpose of the Water Stance is to knock aside shields and stagger enemies, which is why it uses such powerful swings.
*sees armored khesig with polearm "this guy is samurai. If he have armor, is samurai"
