Disney and their Peter Pan remake come out in the most predictable way possible, although I'm not sure they're sending the message they think they are, nor judging by the trailer reaction is the modern audience excuse working anymore. As this is a movie coming straight to Disneyplus not even hitting cinemas, it will be interesting to see the reactions to it. When you can show it alongside examples of what is happening rather than a description of a cinema picture, I have a feeling, there will be a lot of clips to come out of this one. But what do you think? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

The point of the original Peter Pan was basically that boys need their mothers to become real men. Without a mother, Peter Pan and his lost Boys remained perpetually children, which the book made quite clear is not a good thing, because Peter Pan is a massive asshole in the original text....
making Wendy just 'one of the guys' completely negates the point of the story, ruins her character, and robs any thematic weight the story once had. So really you have to wonder what chucklefuck wrote this script, because you can tell from the trailer that they kept nothing of any importance....

The Lost Boys were a commentary on a segment of young orphans who were living on the street and often engaged in criminal activity, and how they were "lost" from a society that had essentially thrown them away. The reason it was boys is because girls were more likely to either be adopted or taken on as servants, so they were less likely to end up on the street. These boys often never grew up, because they would die young. So when the end of the film comes and they come back to "society," it was a big deal. This was a Victorian and Edwardian issue, as industrialization grew the harshness of the lives of these boys became a social issue and yes, charitable groups took this up. That's why today it's a name given to the boys kicked out of FLDS Mormon polygamous groups in the US, as they are tossed from the community with nothing but what they can carry and limited support.
    So now they're just...
    Kids?
Doesn't have the same meaning. They could have used this to educate on this historical problem, but instead...
    Equality?

Hook was the Peter pan film "for modern audiences" which did that sort of thing right. Continued the story instead of retreading or rebooting, continues the themes with slight alternations keeping the same lighthearted feel and doesn't confuse audiences by changing that. Doesn't race or gender swamp main characters, introduces new characters that complement the old without belittling them and adds new elements to existing characters.
Oh and it did this all without alienating existing fans or new viewers.

Having a woman play Peter Pan in the original plays wasn’t about social justice. It was logical. If you want an experienced actor to lead your show, but also not be a grown up, you use a woman. Their voices are higher and their body frames are smaller. Casting an experienced male actor with a mature, deep voice would be silly, and trying to find an 11 year old male to lead your play would be a disaster.

Wendy is a central figure in the story of Peter Pan because of her womanhood. Nevermind the fact that she is supposed to be the only girl there (they bring her to Neverland to be the Lost Boys' mother) but there's an interpretation of the story that views the story through Wendy's lens. Her adventure to Neverland occurs right when she is nearly too old to remain in the nursery. She is on the cusp of womanhood and this interpretation provides a very interesting view of her experiences in that other world and her embracing the role of a mother. And then we can review some of her interactions with some of the other characters, like when Peter asks her for a kiss but she gives him a thimble. But it also plays a role in the jealousy that Tinkerbell has toward her.
I think removing some of that 'coming of age' aspect of Wendy's story arc is something of a crime in any Peter Pan tale. It is partly what makes the story more compelling, especially when Wendy ultimately chooses to grow up.

Wendy was a strong character in the fact that she was a guiding light for the lost boys and Pan. She was a maternal figure. She was their grounding in reality that they couldn't just play pretend forever and had to grow up.

What I love about the original Wendy (and heck even the movie Neverland) was that Wendy was the only girl- the voice of reason, she was warm and compassionate- she didn't have to be a sword wielding girlboss because she already 'better' than the lost boys in terms of maturity and wisdom. The original Wendy KNEW that growing up, having a family, watching your kids grow was, itself, magical. She chose the magic of the EVERYDAY over pirates and mermaids. That, I think, was the whole point of the story. Choosing to leave Neverland and find the magic in the mundane. This new Wendy will be hard to convince to leave since she seems to be having a great time. I wouldn't be surprised if they ret-conned the ending where she stays as the new 'captain'- totally undermining the original message.

We already have two good live-action adaptations of Peter Pan: Hook (1991), with Robin Williams and the Peter Pan (2003) live action starring Jeremy Sumpter.
The Hook (1991) film asks: what if Peter chose to grow up and left Neverland? It's an interesting concept because of his relationship with the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell upon his return and having to make the choice of going back to reality or staying in the fantasy of Neverland.
Peter Pan (2003) is a great adaptation as it stayed true to the main story. I really liked the addition of the scene where Peter reunites with Wendy when she's grown up and has become a mother. It gives the audience a hint that Peter may have regretted his choice not to grow up, yet he sticks to his decision to never grow old.
Unless this new adaptation is going to add something new to the story that wasn't already explored in the previous adaptations, I don't see the point of this film aside from race/gender swapping. If Disney wanted a TRUE reimagining of their films, they'd change the films' setting. Like what if Snow White took place in a future where the Dwarves were cybernetic. Actually alter the setting instead of simply race swapping a cast and calling it reimagined. Romeo & Juliette starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes is a reimagining. It takes the setting from several hundred years ago and moves it into the 1990's.

The essential story was Wendy being a prepubescent girl became the maternal figure for the boys, the live interest for Peter Pan and because they were only boys without any female reverence they treated her like a boy in the beginning. Until they accepted her as their surrogate mother and or lover. This made all of them realize that they had to grow up and fir Wendy to come to terms with leaving her childhood behind to become a woman. Putting in Lost Girls completely undermines the plot and storyline. A bunch of greedy corporate shells taking an original coming of age story and despite their education not understanding that if you take that basic premise away it doesn't work anymore.
