Floki IS NOT a made up character. He's real and full name was Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson. He is known as the first Norseman who deliberately set sail to the island we know as Iceland today. That being said, Floki was the third Viking explorer to sail there and the one before him, Garðar Svavarsson also knew where he was headed.

One of the ideas for Ivar is that he was super agile and wore very light armor. So he would move very fast in battle that wouldn’t be possible in the heavier armor that other Vikings wore
Ivar the Boneless actually got his name by breaking his arm twice as a child. Ragnar had given him the name as joke, and Ivar took the name with pleasure.
Interesting how they kinda got both of Ragnar's causes of death in there. They did have him fall gravely ill during the seize on Paris, even faking his own death and then leaving it unsure if he'd make it at the end of the season. This could actually explain why some would go away thinking he'd died. Then of course he comes back and has his more dramatic death later in England. Very clever how they do their best to combine all the myths.
Ivar was called boneless because he was an agile and capable fighter. So much so he moved as if he had no bone. If he was truly a crippled he would be called the lame and not boneless
I think that the the translation is totally correct. "Benlös" or boneless in English. Ben also means leg in Swedish so it could mean either Boneless or legless.
Or could have lost legs in combat prior in Denmark before commanding a force over in England. Or that he was agile in tactics. He made deals with Aelle and and was against wasn't fully involved in the Northumbrian campaign. His main efforts were in Mercia and east Anglia. Confrontation with Wessex was fewer than his counterparts Guthrum and Ubba
Lame xD.. he'd have been called most likely the same.. No one really knows why he had the name. Same as With Bjorn, but his name is quite easy to make a contradiction on. As if your "side" is Iron you've most likely won a great victory.
Maybe Ivar lost a limb in combat like Thorstein and had to play more of a commanding role as he is a form of Viking nobility being a semi legendary son of Ragnar during the age of the Great heathen army? Old societies still made nepostism a thing. So Ivar probably was very agile for a large warrior, or he was strategically very agile and cunning which is noted or he had lost limbs in combat before.
Ivar being someone with brittle bones disease is a joke. As good as imagining Stephen hawking at a battle in his wheel chair. Just imagine the absurdity
Well now, as a Scandinavian I can tell you that every name in the series is pronounced incorrectly. Ivar is actually pronounced correctly in this video.
but most of it is bullshit tho. ragnar is a story (like odin or thor), lagethar is made up for the series. rollo/robert story is false. björn was king of sweden. aslaug i a mythical person like odin and thor too...

@@slylord8915 Previously, my comment was only about the Vikings TV show, where most of the shown' events were quite fictitious. As for the real historic characters , your guess would be as good as mine. Since these 8th/9th centuries stories were written about 400 years later, by clerics, difficult to know exactly what really happened. For example to story of Ironside, there are two versions; 1. after his defeat by the Saracens at Gibraltar, he escaped to Sweden.. 2. after his defeat, he died near a coast, nearby Frisa ... Which one is the true story ? Ragnarr and Bjorn were common names during that period, probably the stories of many, were combined into one !?! Yet, possibly, some Danes, Swedes, Norwegians do have some knowledge about the ancestors... giving them a possible connection with the past. No quarrels here ! The problem it's often not well explained....

this is pretty cool, but i'm just curious if all of it is actually true? regardless, it makes for a good storyline.... but I just like to know there's truth to this kinda stuff. makes the show ten times better.
As we said in the video, some facts are historically true, some are just part of the Norse Mythology. We just wanted to reveal were the show took its inspiration from and how much liberties it took.
yes, it does, doesn't it. I spent some of yesterday researching some of that stuff, and you were mostly right on-point from what I read. well done, and very interesting video.
The impact that the vikings had on european history is actually kind of astonishing. They raided and migrated everywhere. From the eastern russian territories, all the way to the british isles and france. I like vikings. The culture is so badass, even though they tend to glorify it in TV shows and movies.
Derek 5446 You are JOKING RIGHT?? This is so inaccurately pronounced it isn’t funny... Oh and Ragnar Loðbrók was án actual Viking and not a composite like this dude suggests.. Just in case you were lost on that as well

Norsemen, a term used later after the 12 or 13 century ! ---- ''vikings'' called themselves OSTMEN. The word ''vikingr '' means to go on an expedition... nothing to do with a race or a group of people .
it depends on who you are talking to, the people, or their charateristic if you are an English , seeing 80 Drakkars coming at you with Grunts, and scream you can call them Vikings if you talk about them , you can say the Pagans, or the Norsemen,
As a person that knows that the Vikings spoke Old norse which was pronounced differently from Danish, Swedish, or Norwegian, I can't but cringe at you guys thinking you know.
The most "authentic" way to pronounce them would be like in modern Icelandic which is still pretty close to Old Norse. And here there are for example two early forms of th (ð and þ) that dont even get used in the show nor any modern Scandinavian languages as far as i know, the r is rolled pretty heavily, almost closer to some spanish accents then most modern European tongues, theres many ä,ö,ü sounds and so on.
ive been self studying the scandinavian languages since i was 11, i can't say i naturally understand, but on a scholars standpoint i completely understand and i cringed all the same
*Unpopular Opinion:* Season 4 Ragnar was great and the best Character development his acting got better and peaked everyone else......The Character was at his lowest but that's because they had to worsen him so the sons could rise. And that was the best Character development in the show which shows what power and such responsibilities can do to a man along with greed and Betrayal.

According to historical information, they also had settlements in North America, Greenland and Newfoundland, primarily. It's still unclear to this day why those settlements vanished, but their evidence still remains to this day.

Boneless is a synonym for wind, wich could refer to his ability as a navigator.
Sounds a lot more likely than a crippled viking warlord.
Rakven how is boneless a synonym of wind
but a cippled viking warlord is more awesome , so ..
actually that is a theory
Hello.. Boneless, or "Beinløs" can mean NO MORAL FIBER also
Ivar the Boneless actually got his name by breaking his arm twice as a child. Ragnar had given him the name as joke, and Ivar took the name with pleasure.
I feel cheated I can’t believe lagertha is not ironsides mother and it was him who jumped out the coffin
FUCK Aslaug😂
Why?
BURN THE WITCH!!!
Lagertha fanboys I take it?
Ol booty chin havin ass 😂
Lagertha was obviously the best female in the entire show if you dont think so you're wrong!
Best line viking ...In my mind, I wish I had never left the farm.
"She had a massive bear and a great hound guarding her home"...
Even the narrator almost snickered a little while reading that line... LOL
Love these kinds of historical videos
cool vid. Ever since ive been watching vikings they started to catch my interest more and more. Its nice to have some background information.
Glad you liked it! We're planning on doing more Vikings videos in the future.
I cringed super hard every time you pronounced those names.

Thank you too!
but most of it is bullshit tho. ragnar is a story (like odin or thor), lagethar is made up for the series. rollo/robert story is false. björn was king of sweden. aslaug i a mythical person like odin and thor too...
@@serpouncedk3933 ---- the Vikings TV show is fiction ! With fictional event stories, including with some real historical individuals. Quite complex and some scenes are totally confusing !
I hope Vikings lasts for 6 more seasons
They have not reached the 9. century yet. There are material for at least 40 more seasons :) Try google Harald Hardrada (Harald the hard Ruler) and you are close to the end of the viking area. His life alone is worth several seasons.
Hope to the gods they make a Harald Hardrada story, His jurney in the middle east is epic, maybe the best of all viking history :D
The name is vikings, so maybe it will exploit all the Vikings glorious history

@@slylord8915 Previously, my comment was only about the Vikings TV show,
where most of the shown' events were quite fictitious.
As for the real historic characters ,
your guess would be as good as mine.
Since these 8th/9th centuries stories were written about 400 years later,
by clerics, difficult to know exactly what really happened.
For example to story of Ironside, there are two versions;
1. after his defeat by the Saracens at Gibraltar, he escaped to Sweden..
2. after his defeat, he died near a coast, nearby Frisa ...
Which one is the true story ?
Ragnarr and Bjorn were common names during that period,
probably the stories of many, were combined into one !?!
Yet, possibly, some Danes, Swedes, Norwegians do have
some knowledge about the ancestors... giving them a possible
connection with the past.
No quarrels here !
The problem it's often not well explained....
You killed it with the background music haha
York is an amazing city. Just up the road from me. Still has dungeons and roman fortifications.
RIP Ragnar, I'm sure everyone has seen it by now.
Also it's not a spoiler if the source material is 800 years old.
I mean, read a book. Jeez

Last kingdom is awesome..Uhtred the Dane Slayer
OMG!! THIS IS AMAZING!! The book series called "The last kingdom" links with this - The english side after Ragnars story - I remember Boneless
There is a series called : the last kingdom 😉 also with a character named Ragnar.. + some others characters also named in Vikings..
Great video!!!
Great video! The subtitles are the best - I'm latina and sometimes it's a little bit hard to understand everything just by hearing it-
Thank you very much for your appreciation!
For someone who's from Scandinavia I love how you pronounce the viking names, haha!
i have finished the 6 seasons of the show Vikings and been wondering ever since season 1 about the history of Vikings. This video is informative. They really exists huh! The characters in the show have similarities in history. Amazing!
Ivar at number one wow 🔥 Alex really played Ivars character so good
Never seen a smile like Ragnar's ♥️

I bet everyone in the restaurant turn their heads when you order food.
this is pretty cool, but i'm just curious if all of it is actually true? regardless, it makes for a good storyline.... but I just like to know there's truth to this kinda stuff. makes the show ten times better.
Thank you very much!
This is actually full of inaccuracies. More geared to the show than the actual truth.
It wasn't Bjorn whom faked his death but, a supposed bastard of Ragnar.
Awesome Information 👍👍😊
nice insights, but you slaughtered the pronunciation of the names, outside vitzegs and bjorn's the rest you just smashed them to patata

The impact that the vikings had on european history is actually kind of astonishing. They raided and migrated everywhere. From the eastern russian territories, all the way to the british isles and france.
I like vikings. The culture is so badass, even though they tend to glorify it in TV shows and movies.
Thank you for the most part pronouncing things properly!! I'm so sick of people not doing their linguistic research! Again, thank you!!

Rollo was the French name. His name was Rolf. Gange- Rolf. Walking Rolf!

“The Norsemen” is much more accurate than “Vikings”
Hmmm depends
Norsemen, a term used later after the 12 or 13 century ! ---- ''vikings'' called themselves OSTMEN. The word ''vikingr '' means to go on an expedition... nothing to do with a race or a group of people .
@@RayB1656 Yes
@@RayB1656 Yes ik that
it depends on who you are talking to, the people, or their charateristic
if you are an English , seeing 80 Drakkars coming at you with Grunts, and scream you can call them Vikings
if you talk about them , you can say the Pagans, or the Norsemen,
As a dane i cant help my self but to cringe when hearing those pronounciations..
But you're a Dane, so you wouldn't know either!
-Norwegian
As a norwegian, i cant help but cringe at you guys’ pronounciations

*Unpopular Opinion:*
Season 4 Ragnar was great and the best Character development his acting got better and peaked everyone else......The Character was at his lowest but that's because they had to worsen him so the sons could rise. And that was the best Character development in the show which shows what power and such responsibilities can do to a man along with greed and Betrayal.

Petra Nyman dont take anything in the Viking series and this video as fact.
Kari why is that? There is ofcourse huge amounts of fiction in Tv series like this. But fact is Vikings did invade england many times and ruled huge parts of it for over 300 years. Vikings from norway started the colony at normandie, its fact so why cant he take it as it? Its just as real as colombus travled to central america. Vikings did alot of impressive stuff during that time period and putting its imagination in motion is only fair ^^

The story of Floki and Harald are pretty interesting as well
Ivar's name is well known. His actual name is really translated to "loose bones" and not boneless. The bones refered to being his legs, because he traveled the world and conquered far outside the north .
When he said "Frø", I cried
so beautiful
I've heard so many different stories about his sons births I've heard that Bjorn was eldest son, that Ivar was the oldest, halfdan was the oldest and that halfdan and hvitserk are the same person, I've also heard that he had up to 15 sons
From my research, though there’s so much more to read, I do believe that Bjorn was his first born.
Ragnar's death is still the saddest thing on Vikings and comes Bjørn
Travis was literally the best actor to play Ragnar. He did such an incredible job.
Why did they show that the great warrior died in such a way...i felt very bad...the character played by Travis is amazing
Just recently discovered the show, and man, do i love it! I'm on season 4 episode 5. I hope it continues and doesn't suddenly stop like sons of anarchy.
This saddens me how ambitious this comment was not knowing Ragnar would die within the next few episodes. :(

Floki and Ragnar lived under different times and weren’t related at all. Floki was the first norseman to sail to Iceland, and he lived and died there.
