Oliver Stone adapted the book and took huge liberties with the material (probably the first time he'd famously "take some liberties"). As compelling as Brad was, it wasn't as terrifying as the film and Hollywood always plays it safe with the awards.

If Deer Hunter won best pic, then Jon Voight won Best Actor for “Coming Home.” Christopher Walken was the only actor to win an acting Oscar for ‘The Deer Hunter” tho both Robert De Niro & Meryl Streep were up for acting awards (De Niro for Best Actor & Meryl Streep for Best Supporting Actress). Chris won his one & only Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He’s been way overlooked too many times since, IMO.

As someone who lived through the 1980s, nobody referred to anyone as "courageous and revolutionary" for cheating on your wife with men and getting AIDS. Brad was a great actor who always added an undercurrent of intense inner turmoil to his performances, but his personal life was a tragedy.

Susan seems *deeply* in denial about his sexuality--even more so than he was. In the book, she claims that he only slept with men before he met her. She admits that she never knew where he was throughout the day, but insists she knows he wasn't sleeping with men. She mentions that Brad was a fan of Peter Allen "for some ghastly reason." She really can't think of a reason why. Really?
Honestly, she comes off extremely unlikable. I understand Brad wasn't exactly pleasant himself, but he was an addict. She wasn't even the one that suggested he get help--it was Brad's business manager. And the book is more about her than him. The word "I" (as in Susan) appears more than the word "Brad."
She even calls Helen Mirren "not beautiful" in the book. Look in the mirror, Susan.

Back in the early 80s when the HIV and AIDS first outbreak, there were no antiviral medications invented nor available on the market, to help prevent the spreading of the virus, and from progressing rapidly to full blown AIDS. Without the proper medications in the 80s era, people were dying in large numbers from AIDS, predominately gay men. The availability of the numerous antiviral medications for HIV positive infectants, people are living a long and normal life. For instance: Magic Johnson. He was diagnosed HIV positive 32 years ago, and he's still alive and living a healthy life. For the HIV virus to remain undetected in the body, it's extremely imperative for the person to take their antiviral medications daily as prescribe, and never miss a dose because, a one missed dose could negatively affect the immune system.

I've seen Midnight Express a few times. Never much followed Brad's life but, I seem to recall initially his diagnosis being attributed to a blood transfusion due to hemophiac I think it's called. I didn't know he'd opened up about being half queer while still living. His performance in that movie was VERY good. Seems I recall that the actor who played that sadistic prison warden is a U.S. born actor. Can't remember his name.

    • @slimdude2011

Half queer? Well, that's a strange way of putting it! He was bisexual. Considering his lifestyle, no one really knows exactly how Brad Davis contracted the HIV virus that progressed into full blown AIDS because, he was an intravenous drug user and engaged in sexual relations with men and women. Once a person is infected with an incurable STD such as: HIV, AID, Herpes, Hepatitis B & C from a contaminated, hypodermic needle or from unprotected sex it's too late. Currently, it's not possible for anyone to contract those STDs or any other diseases from a blood transfusion because, the blood is tested and screened thoroughly in the lab for contaminates before it's preserved to be used on a patient when needed.
