    Hi again MATT
    Special bit! Never have seen one before so that was great fun. Really appreciate the movement.
    Maybe another will show up through this vid and all of a sudden you have the start of a collection!
    Thx as always for sharing.
    PS a new discovery to share! Teriyaki

    My 15 years old doesn't love anything else but a medium port correction bit, about the same as the one you've shown, but with moveable shanks and a thick chin chain strap. When I bought him he was 6, and he was ridden with a severe high port correction bit, mostly because he developed a nasty habit to charge for the stop. I've changed for a snaffle bit, but was even worse. I played with the bits, and I've found the one he loved. Actually, it was more like finding the right way to use my hands. My two years old, now 7, I could have put anything in his mouth and be happy with it. Again, I do believe that by the time I've had him, I learned one or two things about the bits and how to use my hands properly. However, I do suspect that horses mouths are different and some are more sensitive than others, some have their palates more thin, or they didn't have their wolf teeth removed and so on. Just my two bit thought.

    Dear Matt, this was just a thought for me, I haven't seen a bit like that yet, what does the high arch in the middle do extra, I wonder?
    I found this tip very interesting, but I usually think that is with things that I don't know yet, thank you for that, learned something great again from you. my thoughts are with Lee for a moment, is he back with you? Roos 🙋🏻‍♀️👍🏻💪🏻🤗

      The arch is for lowering there head, so if they put there head up it puts pressure on the top of there mouth! the higher the arch the more pressure there it. Ive never had a horse need one but Im sure reiners need them

    Nice. Just this week I have been studying bits for one of my horses that tends to chew them sometimes. BTW Matt, I always notice you leave a small loop in the straps that buckle. Preference? Easy to unbuckle and move on to another horse? Thanks.

    Are you allowed to ride bitless (bitless bridle) in NRHA? I know you can't in AQHA:(

    • @truelyequestrian3583
      @truelyequestrian3583 3 роки тому

      I think only three year olds are aloud to use them but yes. I honestly thought AQHA let’s you ride in a nrha.com/media/pdf/handbook/2021/judgingdiagrams.pdf Figure 2 shows the allowed Bosal for NRHA

      I don’t know where part of that message went but I thought AQHA let you ride in a Bosal if the horse was under 5. Or are they not allowed in reining specifically.

      @@annahalko-angemiAMHA (what I show) requires a full bridle as well in reining. UNLESS they are in their first two years of reining then they are aloud to show bitless. ( But they are only eligible for green reining classes.) but your horse can be 7 and show in that class. I think the only discipline that allows you to show a full grown horse bitless are jumpers, barrels/gaming, and endurance. Basically anything that is judged requires a bit. In English they require at least a snaffle, and a full bridle for western. At least in the US. It is sad if you ask me.

      @@truelyequestrian3583 I feel the same way! I ride English and Western and ride bitless with a few horses now. A lot more people are switching to it. Hopefully the organizations will recognize this and allow it soon!

    "There's nothing here that's gonna bite that horse," he said, with a correction port in hand. Correction ports work so well bc they trap the tongue into the port and create such discomfort (as well as discomfort in other areas) that they force compliance. And this is meant for young horses? Oof.

      @@mattmillsreining1 Doesn't matter. ANY hands will make that bit bite bc it's designed to, lmao. You can't change shoddy bit mechanics with "soft" or "experienced" hands bc the bit is still the same even at rest. Good try, though!

      @@mattmillsreining1 All it takes is some research on *real* bit mechanics :) not just what the bit makers say it'll do or going based on how much compliance you get from a shutdown horse. Facebook has some lovely groups (one is called No-Bit-Shit and the other is Horses: Proper Bits and Bitting techniques. They'll explain to you how the bits actually work, where unfair pressure is located, and how hands cannot change inherent mechanics. If not them, there are plenty of very useful diagrams and bitting experts' videos out there but, again, you can't just rely on a biased bit-maker or trainer to explain to you the intricacies of something they're profiting off selling...google is free, just don't go to biased sources and you'll learn tons!
