      aw Mary when i was first dignosed with a seizure disorder i had my blood drawn every week and i think that was when i began to develope the fear of needles. i can not pin point what exact fear when it comes to needles but i will do anything to get away. l i am okay when they swab me with the wipe but as soon as i see the needle i get that fight or flight reaction.

      serena collier i think a lot of people do not readily recognize service animals. At least, she was very respectful and asked if she could pet him. When Mary said he was working she seemed confused but respected them.
      I think it was more odd to talk to the dog of 2 people who are clearly talking to a camera or phone.... just the humans were not available so say hi and move on.

      I really think there should be more awareness when it comes to service animals. I’ve seen it so many times myself. People are just not educated when it comes to the subject. It’s good that Mary told her so she will know for the next time.

    I am 13. I have 8 brain MRIs in the past 3 weeks and each half been 2-2.5 hours each. Mine have all been at Children's, so they give you goggles to watch a movie which helps, but the thing that help me calm is kinda listening to the banging and the rhythm or I sleep. Worse comes to worse I watch the movie. Glad your better now Mary! ♡

    That feeling, of your logical brain fighting your thoughts and giving you huge physical reations.... That is what a lot of people with anxiety disorders (PTSD, GAD, OCD etc) have, even when there is no outer stimulus to cause it. So I totally know what you mean when you say you knew you were fine... It's more than OK to say to health professionals to wash their hands and to be careful. They are not the ones to suffer the consequences of a mistake. I'm only half way through this video but I feel like y'all are sharing SO much in this with us that I haven't necessarily seen before - like the way you were handling that lady asking about O (WHILE videoing!), and handling medical people when they aren't handling your medical stuff exactly how you'd like. Sometimes I feel like there's such a balance in handling those things well but as a Christian still doing them with kindness and grace and sometimes it just doesn't or can't come across that way. • @Flo-cy4xc
    @Flo-cy4xc 6 років тому +14

    This comment is not intended to be rude AT ALL; I'm just wondering, what clues could Ollie miss if someone pet him (besides the fact that it must be pretty annoying people petting him all the time...) I mean, he's a mobility service dog, she has a dexcom, and they were sitting ! 🤔

    • @Lilee177
      @Lilee177 6 років тому +8

      Also, the dexcom can fail and Ollie can alert to blood sugar.

    • @flj7
      @flj7 6 років тому +9

      It's important to be consistent with not letting people pet service dogs. Maybe in this certain situation it wouldn't have caused problems, but you don't want to let people get comfortable with distracting them. A distracted service dog could miss a seizure, blood sugar problem, or something else that requires immediate attention. You don't want people to think it's always okay to pet a service dog. Plus, the dog needs to be used to ignoring other people when in public, in order to keep up with good access skills.

      I always wondered about that too. But, I guess I understand. Dogs love attention and getting pet. So, they might just think about getting attention when out and about and not doing their job instead. In their little dog mind, it's who's going to pet me next thought. lol

The assistance we receive at the airport, in terms of switching to an aisle chair, is always terrifying for me. I am so proud of you for getting through that ordeal! Most of my life I have been battling this monster! It’s the “fight or flight” mode that kicks in during stress when generally your senses tell you that you’re okay but your body doesn’t wanna listen. Your body reacts like a lion just walked into the room even if your brain knows it didn’t. You should be proud of yourself because you talked or thought your way through it. Next time you have to have an MRI done the doctor on call can give you an “Ativan” sublingual that works in a couple minutes and lasts for about 2 hours. The worst thing is that you’ll sleep it off. I think that by now you should be pretty well back to your normal self. I know that it feels like you’ve lost your mind and everything wrong is about to happen but remember that the lion is NOT there. No IFS, ANDs or BUTS!

And I know the exact feeling, and I just kept telling myself, all is good, it’s my brain playing games haha! Peter, I’m so glad you were able to be with Mary during the MRI, you’re always so comforting. Love and hugs to the 3 of you, see you tomorrow!

    It happened to my during a surgery in my mouth. I was awake, they put this thing in me to cover my face and body to not get dirty with blood, and it covered my eyes. I was ok! But then, they started doing the surgery, and I was in anesthesia, but still awake, and I couldn't move because it could make something bad happens, and they pushed my lips up and it covered my nose, and I have to breathe with my mouth, and this is something that I hate, I get anxious. I had to scratch my belly during all the surgery to try to stay calm and don't move. It was 11 days ago and I still have the marks. I was not cool, but I am glad that everything went well, I'm going back to my dentist on thurday, but my grandmother (she was working in my surgery with my cousin, who was the surgeon lol) saw it a few days ago and she said that everything was perfect and clean, so at the end it was worth it (but my belly is still hurting a little bit 😂).
    Making these procedures while awake is really difficult, but at the end it is worth it!

    One thing that helped me a TON when I had brain MRIs was that the tech told me how many minutes or seconds each stage of the scan would last. I could then focus on counting down the seconds in my head, and I could tell myself that I only had to make it through the next "X" number of seconds.

    Love you guys. MRI's are the worst. I was having one done many years ago and had forgotten there was underwire sewn into my shirt. Nobody told me what to do in an emergency so when I realized I just laid there expecting to be cut in half at any moment. Talk about mental torture! But I survived. Our dog had her eyeball rupture and needed emergency surgery 2 months ago. They sent it home with us so we could get it tested.😨 Seeing you eat that fruit hit a little close to home.😨 My son had stiches from a recent gash he got while longboarding. My sister and I removed them ourselves tonight. It was a success! XO

  • @PsychJustice

    Mary, you are so not alone in your unexpected claustrophobia experience! I work in radiology in the same hospital system where I’m guessing you got your MRI done, and more times than not, patients will say they are not claustrophobic or they are claustrophobic, but don’t think the MRI will be a problem. People’s experience of claustrophobia can be different with different scanners or just depending on the moment. And even the same hospital may have multiple different scanners, so it is so hard to know. I feel so bad when that happens because I think the feeling of being claustrophobic unexpectedly is somehow worse, than when you know it’s going to happen. I’m sorry you had to go through that!
    I can’t speak to your specific situation, but in the general we try not to take patients out of the scanner during the scan if at all possible, because depending on the protocol ordered, that could mean having to repeat certain scan sequences, because some sequences need to be acquired in the same position and if they take you out and put you back in, you most likely won’t be in the same position. And then repeating sequences means more time in the scanner. Again, without knowing the specific scan protocol you had, I don’t know if this was the case, but typically the techs will encourage people to remain in the machine as long as possible, so as to minimize the overall time you have to be in there and minimize your overall discomfort. However, at the same time we want people to know they are not trapped and they can always come out if they need to.
    I hope you don’t need anymore MRI’s anytime soon and I’m so glad they were able to watch over Ollie for you, so Peter could stay with you.

    Hey Mary, I've had MRIs. I'm claustrophobic. I've been able to get through them by realizing I could inch worm my way out of the machine if I had too. The creepy cage thing is the worst. Once I realized I could turn my head and get out of it if I wanted to, I felt better. Anyway, that's what helps me get through an MRI.

    I know you guys aren't ones to be contrarians at all or be seen as "difficult", but it could be a good idea to contact the patient advocate line or similar dept to share your experience with the port line. I know Mary walked out okay, but it's possible that nurse needs a refresher in her training if she's gotten lazy with it. God may've kept Mary safe today, but you could be the one who saves others' lives, and He may be counting on you to help ensure that for them. Couldn't hurt to at least consider it for yourselves, knowing it could save someone else.
