Actually TOOL is Maynard's oldest band. He and Billy Howerdel were roommates and Maynard liked the music Billy was working on so much he wanted to be a part of it. Judith was Maynard's mother. She was a devout Christian who was left half paralyzed after a brain aneurysm (or stroke, not sure) but always kept her faith. The TOOL songs Jimmy and the two part suite Wings for Marie are also about her.

Green Jellö is the oldest band I think that is still around these days that Maynard was in before Tool but he is far more known and had a much much longer career in Tool for sure. A lot of early Tool songs were actually written by him in the mid 1980's

Maynard’s mom was Southern Baptist for what it’s worth.
TOOL was involved in a lengthy lawsuit with their record label so that downtime expedited the birth of APC.

I love that Maynard has 3 bands with 3 different approaches and sounds. Tool is the metaphysical brain, APC is the Heart and Soul and Pusifer is the Sex drive. All are equally amazing, but TOOL is gonna go down as one of the most influential bands to come out of the 90’s

Oh, thank you very much, my dear Scottish dudette!
I kind of feel the same about Maynard in Tool and A Perfect Circle. Since both bands have a quite different style, I have no problem with being a fan of both!
Interestingly, Tool came first, A Perfect Circle was founded after them as a kind of super band with members of Queens of the Stone Age, Smashing Pumpkins and Tool. So there is a strong grungy influence in this. Paz, the bassist here, is an awesome multi-instrumentalist musician. Nowadays she plays full-time for The Pixies, another legendary band.
I am very pleased that you share my preferences here, and very glad that you like this band.
And hey - you already knew, that I was also a fan of Queen of the Damned... 🙂

This song is even more incredible when you know the back story of it and the other 2 songs maynard wrote about his very religious mother who after a cerebral haemorrhage was left paralyzed for a long span that lead to the song "10,000 days". "Judith", "10,000 days" and "wings for marie" all show with exeptional introspection and honesty with his struggle and growth as a human dealing with the tragedy.

There is a pretty rich history of women as bassist in rock and roll. Carol Kaye is probably one of the most influential bassist in rock music history. She played for the Wrecking Crew of studio musicians and pioneered the bass sound technique of 60s rock music. I am always happy to see women in rock music. Partially for the purely ascetic reason of it being nice to see anything other than white guys on stage at shows. Seriously though check out Kim Deal from the Pixies and The Breeders, Sean Yseult from White Zombie, Gail Greenwood from Belly, etc etc. Great musicians.

    • @imcrazedandconfused
      @imcrazedandconfused 7 місяців тому +3

D'arcy Wretzki (Smashing Pumpkins, bass) also comes to my mind. There were quite a lot of women on bass in popular music, over time, more women became known as drummers and guitarist, too. Jen Majura (ex-Evanescence, guitar) or Nita Strauss (Alice Cooper, guitar) are great examples of excellent studio and live artists. I also always enjoyed women in rock and metal. Of course Carol Kaye is a legend who wrote an incredible amount of hit record bass lines, that really everyone knows, and I really like her ideas of how good bass lines should be...
I also always enjoyed playing in mixed gender bands or projects myself...

So the songs for the Queen of the Damned soundtrack were composed by the lead singer of Korn. He was supposed to perform them but due to contractual bullshit he couldn't. So they brought in a bunch of the best nu metal bands and let them go nuts. If you want to hear what Jonathan would have done with his own songs he actually performed some of them on Sirius Radio and you can find the performances on youtube. Highly highly recommend them because while I adore the soundtrack, Jonathan is such a musical genius that he transforms his own songs.

@@SoulSingerDiscovers Well, the others already mentioned it. When it comes to Korn, you don't start with Daddy. It is by far the most serious, brutal and emotional song they did, and you WILL be a bit destroyed afterwards. Otherwise you are not a real human being. I admit - I dropped a few tears when I heard it the first time. I did not expect at all what came. And I heard a lot of Korn before. And this is coming from a guy who likes to listen to Infant Annihilator...

This song, Judith is lyrically tied together with the TOOL songs 10,000 Days *Wings for Marie (Judith Marie, his mother)...Parts 1 & 2* and another TOOL song called Jimmy. The 10,000 Days lyrics will likely make you cry; it does me every time. All of these songs are various different aspects of Maynard dealing with his mother's illness and the religion she embraced through her 27 years (approximately 10,000 days) before her death.

    Great review
Firstly, I bought this album in 99 when it came out as I loved the song but hadn't listened to the lyrics much.
Only tonight, just before I watched your video, I watched a short documentary from 2003 of Maynard and his Vinyard.
I learnt that Judith was his mum who was paralysed from chronic illness but was a fighter and didn't burden anyone.
So, a couple of years after she passed away, Maynard released a wine named Judith after his late mother.
I then read the lyrics and burst into tears.
Obviously about his mother basically saying what has she done to deserve this, she hasn't killed anyone, and basically blamming the almighty God for making her this Ill, even though she remained to pray and have great faith....
Just absolutely got to me. I understand this song fully now.

Queen of the damned!! Jonathan Davis wrote most of that soundtrack thats why his voice was used in the movie when ever Lestat sang . I got to see his first solo tour and he did all the songs that he wrote off that album . That movie is so great and cheesy at the same time .. When they used deftones Change in the bathtub sex scene i was hooked ..

“Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty” was his first or one of his first bands. In fact they did a very different version of Sober. He was also in the Texans, and Green Jello I believe.

@@SoulSingerDiscovers Sadly you can't be the first soul/metal singer because Ozzy was a soul singer before Sabbath. The others were a respected blues band before Iomi started getting strange ideas, and Bill Ward was a fantastic jazz drummer (who was playing hip hop beats before there was hip hop).

The song Judith is about Maynards mother, big story behind that. Maynard started with a few bands and Tool became his home for almost 10 years, then started with A Perfect Circle. soon after that he started Puscifer. He has sung with others like Alice and Chains and Deftones. Whatever this man does he succeeds. When not performing he is home here in Arizona with his Wine company which is very successful for a small business becoming a major wine company soon. I admire him because he does so much with his life most would find impossible.

Judith is another song about Maynards mother and her blind faith after having had a severe medical problem that left her unable to walk and Wing's for Marie and 10000 days are the 2 Tool songs that reference her . The 10000 days is the time she spent fighting to exist after the medical episode . And Judith here is the 3 part of his rant at Religion and his inability to understand his Mothers faith . His upbringing was rather strict with such a devout believer in Roman Catholic doctrine as Judith his Mum and its haunted him enough to put it to words in three different ways . Each tells of his reasoning and anger .

Hey Melisa! Let me say, I agree with you in how there should be more women in heavy music. But it's a situation that's improving. Led by Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) and Amy Lee (Evanescence), there's getting to be a good number of female-led (or totally!) bands, including many if my favorites (hey, "In This Moment" and "The Warning"). And there's what's going on in Japan, with Babymetal, Band-maid, Nemophila and Lovebites. Hah - lots to digest there... Great job, and Rock On! 🤘😎👍

Women in rock? Make sure you at least listen to PJ Harvey (particularly the early albums when she's also ripping up the guitar). From this same album, Maynard's vocal on "Breña" is one of my favorite of his. This whole album is good, but that one will crush and expand your emotions in opposite moments. Listen to is at earliest possibility.
APC was after Tool. Billy was Adam's (of Tool) guitar tech (if I'm not mistaken). I think Maynard's singing in APC and growth as an elite musical talent directly led to his vocal performance in Tool's 2006 track "The Pot", a song that regularly shocks people who have heard Tool but perhaps are not extremely familiar with the band (i.e., reaction video youtubers). Like you said, he really stretched out w/ APC (and had the talent to do so) and it just added new wrinkles to then-future Tool vocal performances.
1st time seeing your channel. More power to ya.

It would be great to get this type of breakdown and band comparisons between the 3 but on a timeline of sorts so you can analyze Maynard's various evolutions.
