  • Making ceramic and pottery glass coasters from all recycled clear glass. In this video we go through the entire process of throwing the coasters, to glazing the coasters, to breaking up the glass into pieces to finally laying all the pieces in and putting them into the kiln to fire them.
    You won't find any cooler coasters than these, as the glaze underneath shines through the crystal looking glass to have a gorgeous finished piece.
    PLEASE BE AWARE : Pieces of glass are sharp and can cut you. Do NOT attempt this project without gloves, experience working with glass and pottery material, and adult supervision.
    We are not responsible for anyone trying to do this project, try it out at your own risk!

    I am a retired pottery instructor. Many of my students wanted to add glass to very shallow bowls, similar to what you are doing. They wanted them for jewelry trays. Since the glass left little raised edges that would cause cuts, I had them add a thin layer of resin to deal the surface. Worked great!

    Square coasters? No waste. One big sheet. Cut down, then across.
    Not saying that square is better, or more artistic than round coasters. Just sayin, I believe, cheaper to manufacture.
    By the way, I enjoyed the fideo.

      Clay can be recycled so there wouldn't be any waste. Also, firing the glass is safer if you have a bit of a rim to prevent glass melting over onto the kiln shelf. So the slabs would still need extra work beyond cutting. Slabs also tend to warp unless you carefully compress/flip them or use a very groggy clay body. I'd be able to whip up a bunch of these on the wheel way faster than I could from a slab, honestly. If you really wanna manufacture cheaply, you'd make a bunch of molds of any shape you want and cast them.

      I work with glass all of the time. You do not need gloves. Your fingers are very sensitive, so you will feel it if you are grabbing a point. I work with broken, scrap glass like this without gloves and have only once poked a fingertip. (That was because I grabbed without looking!) Calm your IMMENSE anxiety. A little cut on your finger is the least of your worries. I'd worry more about the fact that he's breaking the bottles without safety glasses. THAT can send you to the ER. (With a sliver in your eye.)

    I’d say it’s more efficient for production. If it’s not molded, but just mass produced as a sheet and then cut (from materials like silicone) then there would be less scrap. Or like wood. My dad makes wood coasters. He does squares because he uses good wood and doesn’t want to waste the materials(:

    I make chandeliers, wind chimes, Mobiles, and different things out of glass I find in creeks, and lakes. It kinda pains me to see such little precautions used. I use gloves, googles and long sleeved shirts always when working with glass. Another precaution is I pick up the glass when it’s freshly broken with pliers because you don’t know how sharp the glass will be.

    ahhhhh when you picked up glass with hand, but that's pretty. We had pottery class in preschool, and it's so funny cause I grew up with this belief that the clay just get random color once you baked them. Since every class I make something, teacher takes them, and when they come back they all have this glossy finish and random color. One time I got upset cause the color didn't match the eye on the animal or something.

    Okay, let me say this since I see the comments contain so many people throwing a fit about him not wearing gloves and long sleeves and some sort of magic glass proof suit. Your fingertips are very sensitive. You will know if you are grabbing a pointed corner or sharp edge. The biggest risk he is taking is not wearing safety goggles when he is smashing the bottles. Even though they are inside of a plastic bag, a sliver/chip could fly out and on a slim chance hit the eye. Better to be safe than sorry. However, people, myself included, work daily with sharp glass and it doesn't jump up and attack us. Chill. And, before you jump my case telling me that you know more about it than I do, I will tell you that I've worked YEARS (as in 15 plus) with broken glass and had 1, count that again, 1 cut. (And that was from grabbing glass from my stash without looking. I know, stupid move.)

    To Make the coasters food safe you can coat them with food safe epoxy resin which had a glass effect anyway. You wou apply the resin after the coaster is complete. (just a suggestion if you wanted to make any other projects with Glass but in order to do so you would need them to be food safe) I an not entirely sure if the item would be dishwasher safe

    Glass comes in different COEs coefficients of expansion.. most fusing glass is either 90 or 96.. and you only fuse together glasses with the same COE. or they will have too much stress between them and eventually crack. I know clays and glazes have COEs also but I’m not sure what they are. If you knew you could possibly put glass glaze and clay together that are compatible. Then the glass wouldn’t crack.

    Several important safety issues seem to be overlooked here. Obvious is the need for safety glasses. Lacerated corneas are no fun, and loss of vision is a terrible thing. If you're doing instructional videos, please be mindful that you have a certain responsibility to inform people of the risks they take in copying you. Gloves. Again with the thing. Not sexy to bleed during your video. I suggest leather or heavy rubberized, but please use something. Even more important. Ceramic glaze is a health hazard until it's fired. Powdered glaze becomes airborn and causes lung damage or silicosis. This damage is permanent. Use a mask or better yet a respirator. Buy disposable gloves, and get obsessive compulsive about washing your hands. Glazing is messy, mop the floor after each glazing session. That dried glaze becomes dust. I've left out the chemical issues with certain metallic oxides, which are often poisonous. Gloves goggles and masks. The risks are real.

    Hi John. You say in the video that the melted glass isn't food safe. Why is that? The glass comes from coke bottles, which should be food safe (one hopes). Does something happen in the kiln to make it unsafe?

    • @richardruckert7954
      @richardruckert7954 6 років тому +11

      It's not the glass. It's the thin cracks between the glass that can trap tiny food particles that can foster bacterial growth

    • @thefatefish
      @thefatefish 6 років тому +6

      Could you perhaps layer some clear resin on top after it's fired to fill those cracks?

    • @richardruckert7954
      @richardruckert7954 6 років тому +3

      To make it food safe?
      It's not likely the clear resin could withstand the long term impact of cutlery; particularly knives. Thereby landing you where you started with the network of cracks compromising the surface.
      Hsin Chen Lin (YT channel) applies ink to a crackle glaze to pronounce the network of cracks, but it is for appearance only, and not a food safe surface.
      You could fire a clear stable glaze on top of the glass, but will have difficulty applying the clear glaze to the already fired first glaze (the glaze with the glass shown here). Supposedly, it's doable, but challenging, and more costly.
      I believe Williams Sonoma sells a line of dinnerware utilizing that second glaze technique. Of course, they just buy the pots from the manufacture who have glaze scientists on staff who have a whole host of equipment at their disposal.
      I believe it best to have the glass technique reserved for non food serving pots, but that's just my opinion.
      I know that I would not eat off of the glaze shown here, a crackle glaze, or a crystalline glaze. All of those glazes have the same spider web network of thin cracks caused by expansion/contraction of a poor glaze/clay body fit.
      To me, it's not worth the risk. It is only breakfast/lunch/dinner or a midnight snack; after all.
      If you are the producer/seller, you will want to be sure to have product liability insurance.

    Jon, I love this idea. However, when I try to make these, I have breakage on the sides of the coasters. Sometimes both sides of the coaster will break off in the final glaze firing. Do you have these issues? What suggestions do you have to help? Thank you so much.

    • @Jonthepotter
      @Jonthepotter  5 років тому +4

      I have had these issues and there are two things that I think causes the issues. One, putting too much glass inside the coaster can break it. The other is when the rim of the coaster is too vertical, like if you throw the edge straight up that will cause cracking. Tapering the edges or having them more gradual will give the glass room to melt into it. The issues are cause by different shrinkage rates so if you think about the the clay shrinking around the glass which doesn't shrink at the same rate just think about the glass not being constricted by anything that might crack around it. Hope that makes sense!

    Hey Jon, hello from North Carolina...I LOVE your videos. I'm fairly new to pottery and am excited to start making these glass coasters. Question: do you ever use a "biscuit" to set your pieces on to glaze kiln?
    Just a thought for the "square" coasters...I watched a "How It's Made" program last night and one German manufacturer makes paper pulp from wood logs, then they have a machine press and cutter that forms, prints & cuts the paper coasters you see at your local restaurant/bar. Said they've been making them for years that way...the squares don't waste the material like round ones would...doesn't make sense to me since they recycle the paper. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it. Have a great day and THANK YOU for your wonderful videos.

    We use square coasters on a little square coffee table to almost cover the complete top of it. Works well but unfortunately today I set my coffee on the table and missed the edge so that is the difficulty. Excuse me as I need to go clean my carpet....

    i've tried this and the glass was still sharp after firing at cone 6. pretty but pretty sharp too. i was going to use resin but finding one that can handle heat without sticking is tough.

    beginner here, sorry for a dumb question. You dipped the coasters in glaze and fired them flat, or so it appears. Did you do something to prevent the glaze from adhering to the kiln?

    Since the glass itself was food safe, what is it about this that makes mixing pottery and glass not food safe? Food safe glazes? Couldn't you do this larger as plates with the recycled glass?

    I believe coasters are square because its related to cost reduction as by cutting circles there is alot of waste

    How round do you make your coasters? I so enjoy you and your videos, learning so much from you. Other question do you run your glazes through a sieve. Thanks. gigi

      My coasters are 4 to 5 inches in diameter, I run my glazes through s sieve about once a year or once every two years, when they get really low.... so not very often!

    It looks like you glazed all sides of the coasters, but you didn’t put each coaster on a stilt in the kiln. Why won’t they stick to the kiln shelves?

    Hey Jon - love your videos - thanks for sharing your studio with us. I love how your videos are like little mini how-to's - my question is, if I make coasters - like the ones in your video, not with the same glaze, but same shape, technique etc. - and then I sell them at a pottery show, is that crossing some sort of creative line of plagiarism or copyright? Like if I really dig the shape of your mugs, and I want to make mugs with that shape, or that idea, is that stealing? Could you do a video talking about that - when is it inspiration and when is it just plain theft?

    Hi, Jon. These are fabulous! I am wondering if the reason the glass delivers such great cracks is because of the type of glass used, the presence of glaze, no anneal or the firing temp? Also, since these are really a pottery fire as opposed to a glass fire, do you bother with an annealing segment in your firing process?

    Do you wax the bottoms of the coasters

  • @kaitlyngrayson3345

    The things you use to hold the coaster when you put it in the glase doesn’t that make two holes

    • @Jonthepotter
      @Jonthepotter  5 років тому +3

      The glaze melts pretty well into the holes and covers them!
