Mate, the primary chain is known to be tiny and weak because it was designed as a 250. Pretty sure that the clutch and gearbox are similarly weak. I'm sure that if you babied the bike it would be OK, just don't use all that 500cc of torque though.
@@redtobertshateshandles Where did you get that idea from? The Venom uses a 1/2" x 5/16" primary chain, same as on most large Brit singles, including the Goldstar and also on twins such as the A10. As for the clutch, there is so much nonsense spoken and written about the Velo clutch by people who have fiddled with them without reading the manual or understanding how it works. If you follow the procedure in the book it gives you a wonderfully light and drag free clutch. I have owned and ridden many British bikes, including Triumph, BSA, Matchless and I can honestly say with hand on heart the Velo clutch is the best of the lot. As for the gearbox I found it to be faultless. Much faster and lighter than the Burman boxes (which I like a lot) and never a missed gear, unlike the BSA boxes if they are not very carefully set up. I wonder have you owned a Velocette? 🙂
I assume you're referring to the still unbeaten record set by a Venom. However I have never read of any clutch or gearbox issues surrounding it. Please enlighten me. 😊
That's a nice bike. What is it that Peter dislikes about the transmission. Are they less reliable than the other popular bikes of the time? Love the videos and chats. Cheers 👍👍
There is nothing wrong with the gearbox it's just that the kick start is low ratio and you have to go through the correct process to start them . The 500 can be harder to start.
Bonza old Brit. The tickover of a healthy heartbeat!!
Used to know an older bloke that had one it may tick over slow but it will.go up the road very very quickly .
Most engines that evolved from smaller ones go well.
These were a 250 originally.
How I judge a good gearbox? When Andy says his trademark “Snicks in” 😂
Lovely bike, souds good and smoot.
Lovely old Brit. bike. Lovely quiet engine and a tickover like a traction engine. They don't make 'em like they used to..
I wonder if that has been fitted with an MSS cam. I could never get my Venom to tick over like that! BTW the Velo gearbox and clutch are wonderful. 🙂
🤣🤣🤣🤣

@redtobertshateshandles I think you should look up what the 'weak' gearbox and clutch got upto in France in 1961.

As an ex Suzuki/ Kawasaki mechanic, I believe the expert.
It's a 500 derived from a 250.
Driveline parts seriously overstressed.
Andy’s sump valve….😉
Is it sold?
